¢¢ MINUTES OF THE MAY 1990 MEETING¢¢ GENERAL MEETING:¢¢ Again this monthly meeting started¢with a surprise, two former member's,¢ANDREW BUONGIORNO and MATT BENNETT,¢returned to the nest. In addition, a¢new member, BILL MUDRY, joined CARLOS¢HURTADO's car pool from QUEENS, for¢this meeting. Besides rounding up old¢and new OL' HACKERS members CARLOS¢promised us a "MAGIC SHOW" for the¢JUNE meeting.*¢¢ POTPOURRI:¢¢ ALEX PIGNATO asked "How many members¢have registered with "THE REVOLUTION"?¢A show of hands revealed only (4)¢members have signed up. Members were¢asked to please register, in order to¢help create as large an 8 BIT base as¢possible!¢ JERRY GINSBERG has written a story,¢"HOW THE VAGANTS BROKE MURDER¢INCORPARATED". The story will be¢serialized in our newsletters and is¢six chapters long. Although the story¢is not computer related, it is an¢interesting and historical true story¢of how MURDER INC., a brutal murder¢for hire mob, was broken when WILLIAM¢O'DWYER was the BROOKLYN DISTRICT¢ATTORNEY.*¢ JOE LEBER brought in a FEBRUARY 28,¢1990 article stating that the "ATARI¢EXPLORER" magazine is expanding their¢magazine.¢ A discussion revealed 8-bit ATARI¢articles appear only now and then and¢are spotty at best.* Subscriber¢members were requested to be on the¢lookout for any 8-bit articles, to be¢photocopied and brought to our¢meeting.¢ ALEX read a letter he had received¢from JOAN RYAN, 8 BIT SIG of ACE, ST.¢LOUIS, in which she discussed the ACE¢8-BIT LIBRARY. ALEX also read his¢response, agreeing to the trading of¢P.D. library disks, thereby creating¢still another source of new programs¢for the club!*¢ In FEBRUARY the president, AL¢BEITCHMAN, was requested to write a¢number of letters for the club, to¢date no action has been known to have¢taken place. One letter was to be¢sent to "NO FRILLS SOFTWARE" for a¢list of ATARI USERS according to zip¢codes. Is our president deliquent on a¢motion that was passed by the¢members?¢ For those who purchased the "WQNR¢DOS" disk from KRIS HOLTAGAARD, he has¢now included a full set of doc's on a¢new upgraded DISK. IF you mail him¢your orginal copy he will return a new¢upgraded one to you, at no charge. How¢can you go wrong with that deal, a¢FREE UPGRADE.*¢ The MAY/JUNE newsletter issue was¢held to (6) sheets (12 pages) to¢reduce postage cost for club¢mailings.¢ Alex has been corresponding with,¢BOB WOMACK, President of STATUS of¢VIRGINIA BEACH, concerning "P/S LABELS¢NO.7". He has a problem, with his¢GEMINI 10X. It has been printing only¢every other line of an icon on paper.¢BOB put the question to his members¢and he replied that a change of the¢dip switch, for line feed adjustment¢may make for sucessful printing. Hows¢that for cooperation between CLUBS!¢They are members of NORTH EAST ATARI¢REGIONAL USERS SUPPORT (NEAR*US).*¢ ALAN SHARKIS announced that ISLAND¢VIDEO COMPUTERS is opening a new store¢in FARMINGDALE on or about JUNE 1st.¢They do a terrific job selling and¢servicing ATARI equipment and¢software. Lets back them up.*¢ The second announcement was¢"TRANSKEY" a modification that goes¢into your 8-bit machine and allows¢your 8-bit machine to use an IBM style¢keyboard.* The advantage of this is¢the keyboard will last a very long¢time, adds keys and functions that you¢don't have with the ATARI keyboard and¢will add keys to use in BASIC¢PROGRAMMING. The article appeared in¢the SLCC JOURNAL, (SAN LEANDRO¢COMPUTER CLUB.) ALAN will review the¢article for our next newsletter.*¢ The third announcement was very sad,¢when he relayed the news that PETE¢FAZIO. President of B.A.S.I.C., in¢BROOKLYN, passed away. PETE was the¢editor of the newsletter "DATELINE¢ATARI", for B.A.S.I.C., the BROOKLYN¢ATARI SOCIETY. As ALAN said "Ask him¢for help and his face lit up and he¢gave it to you". ALEX stated that we¢in the ATARI world lost a good friend.¢A few members are also members of¢BASIC and knew him well. ALAN at this¢time made a motion that we stand a¢moment in silence for PETE FAZIO. The¢motion was quickly seconded and the¢members then honored PETE.¢ ALEX gave his disk drive to BRAD¢JAWORSKI to have it repaired at ISLAND¢VIDEO. Since his disk drive is used¢almost exclusively for OL' HACKER CLUB¢work he requested that the club pay¢half the repair expense. STAN¢SCHENFELD made a motion the club pay¢half the cost and HARRY TUTHILL¢seconded the motion.¢¢ DOOR PRIZES:¢¢ Some might call it "SPRING MADNESS",¢or "SUMMER SUPER GIVEAWAY", as ALEX¢tried to get everyone a door prize.¢HARRY TUTHILL considered it an¢immediate sucess when he won this¢months top door prize. The winners for¢MAY were:¢ANTIC MAGAZINE/DISK- H. TUTHILL¢FEB/MAR '90* -J. LEBER¢ -M. BRYANT¢WQNR UTILITY/ANTIC¢PRINTER DISK* -W. MURDY¢SOURCE FLOW MEDIA/¢ULTRA COPY* -H. PEGLER¢WQNR UTILITY/¢FILE IT 2* -S. SCHENFELD¢ -A. ATKINS¢Once again a NEW MEMBER (BILL MURDY)¢won a door prize in his first¢attendence!¢ DEMONSTRATIONS:¢¢ CARLOS demoed the new issue of KRIS¢HOLTAGAARD's "NEWSLETTER". This copy¢contains more help screens and an¢updated main menu screen. CARLOS and¢ALEX are especially enthusiastic about¢using this program for future¢newsletter issues. For them it means¢no zeroxing, a bigger and larger "NL"¢(NEWSLETTER), but on the negative¢side, (there always is a negative¢side) there will be a cost increase¢including a disk, plus mailing, and¢the effort of making and mailing¢copies. By the way, the menu allows¢(4) options they are:¢ 1. Exit to BASIC¢ 2. Exit to DOS¢ 3. Printer Config¢ 4. NL Print Help**¢ The menu contains the letters "A¢thru Z" which correspond to the¢newsletter titles for articles. "TEXT¢PRO" will allow the use of ASCii¢graphics to be included. You have the¢option to READ, (on screen) PRINT, or¢return to main MENU. When PRINTing a¢hardcopy, the text is also displayed¢on the screen. KRIS deserves a lot of¢credit for this program and the¢upgrades.*¢ ALEX then showed off his disk titled¢"BASIC UTILITY PACKAGE". The disk¢contains (13) new commands. The¢orginal program is an .OBJ program and¢ALEX has added program instructions to¢the disk. In reviewing some of the¢programs he started with "Debut"¢demoed at the APRIL meeting, then went¢into "DEVICE.BAS", and a host of other¢useful utilities! The programs will be¢part of our LIBRARY!*¢ Next ALEX demoed our "WELCOME¢DISK".* Some members were unaware that¢the graphics are not the same on both¢sides, although the text is the same.*¢To prove his point he displayed both¢on the monitor. We all enjoyed the¢show!*¢ AL ATKINS, was next up, and using¢"MICROCHECK", he showed the members¢that by using a two letter code in the¢memo line, the user can then select¢for printing any catagory desired. AL¢uses codes such as, U for UTILITY, B¢for BANKING, I for INSURANCE, etc..¢Then expanding the U to UT for¢TELEPHONE, UO for OIL, UW for WATER¢the user now can group by catagory for¢viewing or printing. At each years end¢the user now has a complete printout¢of all checks and then an additional¢printout for the many catagories to¢store as records for future use. AL¢also uses "MICROCHECK" to keep a¢permanent record for VISA charges.¢Using the date, serial number, payee,¢amount, memo (with coding letters and¢a description of item) on the check,¢again you have a yearly record of all¢purchases.¢¢ FUTURE MEETING DATES:¢¢ Future meeting dates for the OL'¢HACKERS ATARI USER GROUP are:¢¢ JULY 21st, 1990 AUGUST 11th, 1990¢¢ All dates are a SATURDAY and are¢scheduled for the PLAINVIEW/OLD¢BETHPAGE LIBRARY.¢ Remember........ the next OL'¢HACKERS ATARI USER GROUP meeting is¢scheduled for JUNE 2nd, at 11:30am.¢¢ Sincerely,¢¢ AL ATKINS¢¢ * =Denotes an interruption of the¢meeting by ANDREW BUONGIORNO.¢
