Into the domain of the United States came the
purchase from France of 830,000 square miles for 15
million dollars. The expedition was organized by
President Jefferson "to trace the Missouri to its
source,to cross the highlands and follow the best
water communication which offered itself thence to
the Pacific Ocean". He chose Captain Meriwether
Lewis to lead the expedition and Lewis chose Captain
William Clark as his coleader. Lewis knew that Clark
would not join the expedition as a subordinate so he
made him a co-commmander.
President Jefferson's objectives for the
Expedition were to explore the land, serve as a diplo-
matic mission, collect scientific information,and
break trail for commerce. The journey lasted 28 months
at a cost to the government of $39,000.
The journals show that the men kept faith with
their orders and the purpose entrusted to them. They
daily assembled all possible information in fields of
geography,meteorology,minerology,botany,zoology,and
ethnology. Captain Lewis had a talent of being able
to put down on paper precisely what he had seen.
