Meriwether Lewis had the task of provisioning a
group of up to 40 members with arms, food, clothing, camping
gear, scientific instruments, medical supplies and Indian
presents for an indefinite period of time. He began
making lists months in advance. He purchased portable
soup,mosquito netting,oil skin bags,scissors,mirrors,
beads, belts, and calico shirts. He knew in advance that
they could not always expect to live off of the land.
Lewis took a cram course in celestial observations
from an astronomer.
The expedition insisted on unmarried men accustomed
to the woods, good hunters and stout of body. Patrick
Gass,for instance, a skilled carpenter,could build
dugout canoes and stockades. The crew of the expedition
came from volunteers from the western army posts.
The three Fahrenheit thermometers were broken
before the party crossed the Rockies. Tobacco was
exhausted before the party left Fort Clatsop.
