  1.      Meriwether Lewis had the task of provisioning a
  2. group of up to 40 members with arms,food,clothing,camping
  3. gear,scientific instruments, medical supplies and Indian
  4. presents for an indefinite period of time. He began
  5. making lists months in advance. He purchased portable
  6. soup,mosquito netting,oil skin bags,scissors,mirrors,
  7. beads,belts,and calico shirts. He knew in advance that
  8. they could not always expect to live off of the land.
  9.      Lewis took a cram course in celestial observations
  10. from an astronomer.
  11.      The expedition insisted on unmarried men accustomed
  12. to the woods,good hunters and stout of body. Patrick
  13. Gass,for instance, a skilled carpenter,could build
  14. dugout canoes and stockades. The crew of the expedition
  15. came from volunteers from the western army posts.
  16.      The three Fahrenheit thermometers were broken
  17. before the party crossed the Rockies. Tobacco was
  18. exhausted before the party left Fort Clatsop.
