Lewis devoted much time to preservation of plant
specimens, trying to prevent their loss to rain, flashflood
mildew, and capsize.
The expedition encountered an abundance of game. While
in Yellowstone, they commented on the tameness of the
animals. "I passed several buffalo in the open plain within
fifty paces...They viewed me for a moment as something
novel and then very unconcernedly continued to feed". In
some places buffalo barred their progress and had to be
clubbed out of the way.
The expedition had repeated trouble with grizzlies.
Clark and Drouillard came upon a "large and turrible
looking animal". They put ten shots into him, five of these
through the lung. The bear still had enough life to swim to
a sandbar in mid-river. They stretched the six hundred
pound carcass out at eight feet seven inches with a
chest measurement of five feet ten inches. "I find",
said Lewis, "that the curiosity of our party is pretty
well satisfied with respect to this animal".
