For those of you don't know, Rich Heimlich is a well-known anti-GUS fanatic
from the comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.sound.* newsgroups. His knowledge of
technical matters is less than sterling, but he still likes to jump in
and preach about how he knows what's best for us. After all, he
wrote a non-technical book on the SB. :)
He advocates the 1980's idea of SB-compatible dumb DACs and General MIDI
w/ROM samples across a dumb UART as the ultimate in sound cards,
ignorant that some of us want something *more* than that. He thinks that
despite his lack of knowledge on how these things actually work, his
consulting business qualifies him to speak for software developers.
He's also one of the morons who fell for the Mac-suing-iD joke. :)
So, I suggest the reader take everything he says with a grain of salt. The
GUS has strengths and weaknesses, sure... but don't base your decisions
on RTH's comments alone. Nor mine, for that matter. Get a balanced set
of views, decide what you want to use your card for, and *listen* to them.
