Subj: Re: Adaptec 2930 and OS/2
From: asgeir@itn.is
Hi!
I don't have a solution, but I am experiencing the same
problem. I just purchased an Adaptec 2930U2 SCSI card and
an IBM UltraStar 18ES 18GB SCSI hard disk. I am running OS/2
Warp 4.0. I went to Adaptec's website as well as IBM's OS/2
driver repository but couldn't find the right drivers. There
are driver for the AHA-2930 (not U2), the AHA-2940U2W and
several others. The AHA-2940U2W uses a chip called AIC 7890A
(according to Tech specs at www.adaptec.com) but my AHA-2930U2
has one named AIC 7890AB. I have no idea what the difference
is.
I was going to install OS/2 onto the new disk but I have had
some problems reaching that goal. I applied the AHA-2940U2W
driver to my OS/2 start-up diskette 1 but I can't get FDISK to
see more than 8GB of the disk. Also I can't make anything else
than a primary partition installable.
I will try to find out more about this (a certainly ain't
giving OS/2 up because of some naughty SCSI card) and if I will
find a solution I will post it. It would be nice if you would
do so to if you find a solution. Also, if anyone else reading
this message can help, I would appreciate it.

Hi!
I have been using NT 4.0 and OS/2 4.0 for approx. 3 years.
Here is my current configuration:
C: 250MB - FAT - IBM DOS 7.0
D: 1500MB - NTFS - Windows NT 4.0
E: 500MB - HPFS - OS/2 Warp 4.0
F: 3400MB - HPFS - Data
G: 500MB - RedHat Linux 5.0
I have the pinball.sys driver installed in NT and have been
successfully accessing my HPFS partitions for 4 years. I have
had no problems what so ever with NT screwing them up. Two
anoying problems though: 1) NT security not available for HPFS
partitions. 2) When selecting many files in explorer and
deleting them you get an error saying that the path is not
found and only one file is deleted. That means you have to
delete them one by one or use the command prompt.

Thanks for the reassurance. I always worry a bit about using specific
hardware and its proprietary quirks. However, I had hoped this would be
possible.

AMD has a set of proprietary RAID levels that combine striping and disk
spanning with RAID levels 1,3, and 5. They refer to these levels as 10,
30, and 50. Level 10 is sometimes called 0+1. It is nice because it
combines the maximal data redundancy of RAID level 1 with the faster
disk access and transfer of RAID 0.
I didn't meke it up, honest!

AMI also has a large number of general instructional *.pdf files, as
well as those specific to their own hardware and software. I did a lot
of research before embarking on this project. I have a copy of the
Minutes of the Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks BOF (RAIDMIB) and
some theoretical papers (the latter being difficult to apply to my
situation.

I'm going to be using Warp Server v 4 installed on a base of Warp 4. So
I won't have some of the newer features. However, for what I'm doing, I
won't need them. I'll be using db2/2 Server v 2.1.2, again lacking the
bells and whistles but well-documented and dependable.

Actually, they are 7500 rpm Micropolis disks. No support, but I can
replace them for a song! And, as an array, they should be very fast!

I've not tried this, but there has been some chatter here lately that
HPFS386 is not available as an option for Warp 4 (non server) because
its not compatible and will corrupt things on you within a relatively
short amount of time (days to weeks).
At this late stage in OS/2's development, it seems as if hpfs386 has
been put into mothballs. If you wanted to fool around with cross
compatibility maybe see if its possible to migrate JFS to Warp4.
Either that or cut through the whole mess by simply installing Warp4.5
(with JFS if you want it) from the WSeB CD.
Cheers,
Craig

ATAPI or SCSI, this does not matter for me. If there were only SCSI-DVDs this
would be a strong argument for me to buy a SCSI-controller, too.

one small problem. there are no dvd drivers and Big-baaaaad-Blue doesn't seem

HPFS386 is an extra part of Warp server and does a lot of tricks for the
server part of Warp. He is probably right and won't work.

Warp 4.5 is WSeB which is Warp Server for Electronic business. IBM
sells it at an expensive price (dealers sell it too and so on). As far
as JFS goes it is faster than HPFS. See another posting of mine on an
earlier thread "Getting Started with RAID" You can always look at a
hardware solution. Multiple SCSI disks can increase performance on a
multithreaded OS, if you wanted on top of SCSI to go for raid, RAID
controllers can have cache.
HPFS386 amongst other things implements software raid and that is why it
uses a larger cache etc etc. (I have not used HPFS386 and it costs
nearly as much as Warp Server). If money burn a hole in your pocket, go
for hardware solution.
Hope it helps

Sorry for my poor english.
I used two DVD-ROM drives with OS/2. One is Pioneer DVD-ROM(sorry, I
forgat the model of this DVD-ROM drive) and the other is Sony DDU220E.
They all work fine under OS/2. What driver you need is just CD-ROM driver
of OS/2. Yes, it's true.

One way to limit the likelihood of your clothes catching fire is to
purchase your SCSI and RAID hardware from eBay. I've managed to obtain
both new and refurbished SCSI items for an average of about 25% of
list. New fast/wide SCSI hard drives can be had for about $25 per GB.
But, you have to take your time and not get caught up in bidding wars.

I got the YCR6416S, but now I've got problems installing the SCSI drivers.
Can anyone please help me. In the SystemSetup folder, the Icons/Objects
listed bellow have lost their links to the programs they are supposed to
run. I can't install the drivers for my new SCSI card, the "Device Driver
Install" object has lost it's icon since it no longer points to an
executable. Can anyone please look at their settings for these objects
and provide the names of the programs associated with these objects so
that I can edit the properties of these object and point them to their
proper executable.
"Device Driver Install"
"Selective Install"
"Selective UnInstall"
"Add Programs"
"DDNS configuration"
"DHCP Monitor"
"Adapters and Protocol Services"
"Create Utility Diskettes"
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Thank You Lorne, that did the trick.
I was able to install the drivers, rebooted and confirmed OS/2 regonized
the new drive.
Next I will try to record an Audio CD.

You should have three (3) install disks for Warp 4 "Installation",
"Disk 1" and "Disk 2"
Warp 3 has only two (2) install disks.
If you have Warp 4, get three blank diskettes and execute
the CDINST.BAT file from the root directory of the CD and
it will create a new set of diskettes.
In either case you have to download the IDEDASD.EXE update
file from
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/os2ddpak/idedasd.exe
This is a self expanding file (it also works in DOS)
There are instructions in the README file that is contained in
the package. Basically, they tell you make a new copy of
the "Disk 1" and update some of the files with the files from
the IDEDASD package. I think these are
IBM1S506.ADD
IBMIDECD.FLT
OS2DASD.DMD
and add the statement
SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1
to the end of the config.sys file on "Disk 1"
but check the instructions to make sure....
After updating the installation diskettes you boot from the
diskettes with the CD in the CD drive and follow the
instructions.
WARNING - if your CD drive is on an IDE channel by itself
make sure the drive is jumpered as a MASTER otherwise
the CD will not be detected.

From: "J. Ken Zur" <kenzur@swbell.net>
Hi! I am running Warp 4. During my original install, for some reason
the system ended up with an A and B floppy drive. Well my B is really
the LS-120 and after adding the support for large/removable drives the
LS-120 still doesn't work as a 120mg floppy. Attempts to Format "B"
suggest a max size of 2.88mg.
Anyone else out there having the same problem? Or can someone who
has their LS-120 working let me know what their Config.sys looks like
realative to OS2DASD.DMD switches. I'd really like to use the 120 as a
backup for all these Fixpaks and updates!
Thanks in advance

basedev=aha152x.add /ET /L /V for the aha1505 (scanner, drm1804x), lun scan

the aha2940uw works just fine as usual, nothing special to report
the aha1505 reports the 2 lun of the pionneer - yes it has only 2 for 18 cd's!
- and... nothing further! under Dos, the Dos pionneer driver attributes a
drive letter to each cd... nothing such here, in Warp 4 (fp10, latest in
french
version), I have only 1 drive letter and of course no access to it.
any further idea/tip/proposal/solution (better! :) is most than welcome!
btw, if anyone ever got that cd-changer working under warp on an ibm ps/2 with
ibm scsi controller, that's also good, I have and use such a pc for homework,
it could go to the bbs if required :)
btw, the Diamond A90 (savage4) works great in 1024x768x16m@75hz on my 17"

Subj: Aurora on IBM PC730
From: jpolt@bradnet.legend.co.uk (John Poltorak)
Has anyone attempted to install Aurora on an IBM PC 730 (MCA/PCI) ?
I've come up against a brick wall with the msg:
'OS/2 is unable to operate your hard disk or diskette drive'
when OS/2 is booting up. The same box has been running Warp 4
with FP8 without problems for a long time.
Can someone suggest whether this is a problem with AIC7870.ADD,
OS2DASD.DMD, OS2SCSI.DMD, ABIOS.SYS or something else?
I have tried installing Aurora a number of ways including using
SEMAINT for a minimal installation, and that has always worked
for me in the past, but I can't get to the bottom of this problem.

The bargain basement is now eBay, but there's no point in seeking UW
SCSI-2 drives. U2W drives, like all SCSI devices with comparable
connectors, are designed to be backward compatible. If you have a UW
host, just plug in a modern state-of-the-art U2W drive. It'll work just
like it was UW, except probably somewhat faster than a three year old
drive.

From: Stefan Pelz <Stefan.Pelz@orthogon.de>
Hi all,
I finally got the new IBM PC-Card support (PC Card Director)
installed on my notebook, It recognises the socket controller but
refuses to accept the SlimSCSI (alias AHA 1460D) card.
The driver provided by adaptec (BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD)
seems to load (at least is doesn't complain). The card is inserted
when the machine is booting.
I understand that the Card Director uses .SCR files to identify
and configure the cards. I tried to create one for the Adaptec card,
but it requires the manufacturer ID and some other things I don't know.
Anyone tried this before?

Or, 768 mb, or 1 gig, or 2 gig, or 4.3 gig, or 8 gig. It all depends
on exactly what the BIOS supports, on the disk in question. The rule
is "The first 1024 cylinders", which can be different amounts of data,
depending, exactly, how the BIOS supports the disk.

Hiya,
I tried doing that. does this suggest the warp 4 CD is bad?

The YCRW4416S is fine with WSeB providing you have the latest flash update on
it (1.0h). I had problems when upgrading from Warp 4.0 to WSeB in that the
boot process wouldn't get past loading AIC78U2.ADD. Updating the firmware to
the latest level fixed the problem and it now works beautifully :)

1. Be sure your bios settings are right. While not many bios settings
offer "ls120" as an option for the A or B drive, different bioses refer
to what you have there as different devices. IOW, for some you should
select "CD ROM", and it will be detected. But not for others.
2. You don't need Fixpack XX, but you do need IDEADASD, the updated IDE
driver package. (I use an LS120 with FP 1) So if you have fear of
fixpacks, you can still use the LS120.

You mean that I'm in for a pleasant surprise? Tell me more, tell me

Subj: JFS does not mount
From: Wolfgang Streule <streule@informatik.uni-freiburg.de>
HiHo!!!
I got WarpServer for E-Business Beta 2 installed on one of my Servers
and have a JFS-Raid using 3 Harddisks (25GB, 25GB, 37GB). I built in the
37GB Harddisk on Friday, tried to expand the Volume and ... the Server
hung up ... next boot, I could still work on the JFS-Drive, but it
crashed again, the ... one boot later ... the CHKDSK-Routine crashed on
boot with Trap 5 (only the application, or ... for being exact ... I got
a Trap in UJFS.DLL) ... so I tried to re-CHKDSK the drive and ... and
thats interesting, it works, but only as long as I do not add the /F
parameter to the CHKDSK-Command. Since then, I'm unable to mount the
drive as CHKDSK always crashes. I already built the harddisks into
another computer, but the problem still persists, so I tried the first
JFS-fix ... no change.
Has anyone any idea what to do now or ...
... can anyone send me the UJFS.DLL from WarpServer for E-Business final
... has anyone a program to toggle the dirty-flag of a JFS-drive ??
Bye ... W0lli!!!

I have it I can send it to you ... however there is also a patch
specific to JFS. Now was it in www.testcase.ibm.com or something like
it?
Contact me direct and I can make the patch and dll available for you to
download.

You have to get up to Fix Pak 8 I believe. Don't use the FORMAT command
line command until you apply that Fix Pak. This is listed in the readme
file which comes with the OS/2 drivers for the drive. After FP8 you don't
need the drivers for the drive.
It could also be that you have your BIOS configured incorrectly...since
you said "somehow ended up with 2 floppy drives".

Warp 4.5 huh?.....
Is that what IBM is really calling it? I had heard that there was a way to
get WSEB to "custom install" a client, but thought that IBM was pretending to
be "unaware" of this potential.
As a paid member of Software Choice, IBM has promised to provide me with all
improvements, including any future new releases (if any) during the term of
my subscription.
If IBM officially recognizes a release level of 4.5, well, perhaps that
$200.00 wasn't wasted after all.
Please provide (or direct me towards) any info documenting the "official"
recognition of a v4.5 release.

Dan,
Do as you please, but personally, I'd stop waiting if I were you. Yes,
Castlewood
is a separate company from Syquest
( I'm sure you know the relationship, so I won't bother here) but as someone
who
personally had 5 Syjets over a 2 year span (two dead in the box, three died in
use) that for no apparent reason simply started to refuse to "spin up", I was
cautiously optimistic that Castlewood might be "The storage solution" I've
always
hoped for.
Based upon first hand information from a friend who purchased a castlewood,
and a
few posts I've seen at alt.syquest, it appears that the Orb shares much in
common
with Syquest. Too much in fact. As someone who has much data stored away on
11
syjet cartridges that I'll probably never see again, I'd feel foolish going
down
the same road with Castlewood. Take it for what it's worth.
I hope that DVD-RAM becomes a reality for OS/2 users. Find out more at
www.softarch.com , and place a "vote" for OS/2......

Hello Asgeir,
It sounds like you have half of the solution by applying
the AHA-2940U2W drivers. I use that with my DFI mobo.
My 9GB drives had no problem partitioning. I've heard
that there is a fix for OS/2 that cures the 8GB partitioning
problem. Use HPFS on large drives. There are some
issues for multiple OS access and partition planning though.
Can someone recall where the 8GB fix is?
Good luck,
David LaRue

Subj: OS2 Dual Boot Installation Problem
From: "Ian Dawson" <idawson@montupetuk.co.uk>
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite S300CDT (with 2.1Gb - 80Mb RAM) currently
running
Win 98. I want to install OS2 as a dual boot option.
After inserting the OS2 Installation Disk, an OS2 symbol appears and after
about
30 seconds of disk churning, the machine reboots and starts the whole
process again.
Any Ideas on whats wrong and how to fix them....
Thanks.

Not quite.
After re checking the Adaptec site the OS/2 drivers do not
support the 2930.
Any way my 2930 has now gone into my Linux box and I bought a 2940u2w
for the OS/2 machine.
Get the OEM or bare card version as all drivers etc are available from
www.adaptec.com and if you have the 2930u2 kit then you have everything
else.

OS/2 work on my CDS300 with boot manager (OS/2 and linux)
I found a OS/2 FAQ for my laptop and i'm sure that there was one for 300CDT
too.
Try to search for it on web.
I'll guess that you problem is caused by the CDROM or "VGA card".
Good luck

If you are trying to use "dual boot" meaning that the OS/2
code is in the same partition as Windows 98, this probably
won't work given that Win 98 is probably using a FAT32 or
FAT32X partition type which OS/2 cannot read.
The only reliable way is to use "boot manager" which
will require that you re-partition your disk drive to obtain
another partition that can be used to install OS/2

Are you perchance running OS/2 4.0 with no fixpack -AND- using HPFS
on the JAZ? If both of those conditions are fulfilled then you are
probably running into a bug in the early release of HPFS which caused
it to absorb all disk error conditions without reporting the errors.
Format /L didn't lock out bad sectors and the /V switch on the copy
commands was of no particular value. I ended up writing a REXX script
to do copying and verifying to ensure the reliability of my data.
It was all corrected in FP1.

On the first diskette? Try making a new one from the CD using CDINST.BAT
and use that instead - maybe the disk is corrupt.

You need to be careful with Boot Manager and FAT32. I used the Boot Manager
that
came with Partition Magic 3.0 and which PowerQuest got from IBM. Later I
installed this Boot Manager on a machine that had Win98 preinstalled in a
FAT32
partition. It didn't handle it correctly. I went on a Partition Magic forum
and
found that PowerQuest had a fix for the problem which I downloaded and
installed
and this updated Boot Manager handled the FAT32 partition correctly. The issue
is that the Boot Manager that comes with Warp is probably the same one that
was
originally distributed with Partition Magic and thus probably suffers from the
same problem. I don't know if IBM ever distributed a fix for the problem.
The symptom of the problem was that, when I booted the FAT32 (Win98) primary
partition, the FAT primary partition (In which I had installed DOS) was
visible. The FAT32 partition was assigned C: and the FAT partition got
assigned
two drive letters. One of these "drives" appeared to Win98 to be of 0 length
and
inaccessable while the other appeared normal. The problem, of course, is that
there is supposed to be only one primary partition per physical drive visible
at
any one time. I only had two primary partitions on this drive (other than Boot
Manager itself) so I don't know how it would have dealt with more than two
primaries.

Close, Jon.
But I do have FP6 installed and I'm using HPFS on the JAZ drive.
IBM1s506.add is at 1998-1-12 OS2scsi is at 98-1-6.
Maybe they put the bug back in? <g>

Subj: When 32bit CHKDSK first came out...
From: Markus Quandt <Markus.Quandt@gmx.net>
...there was a special option or driver to make it run faster on very
large hard drives, wasn't there? 32 bit CHKDSK was a separate download
then, and it contained some documentation which I seem to have deleted.
I suspect that I could use this info now...
The problem is this: I have a 8 GB IBM LVD SCSI drive, hanging off an
Adaptec 2940U2W adapter card. Two partitions (first 2 GB, 500 MB used,
second part. 4 GB, 700 MB used) are HPFS formatted. If CHDKSK runs at
startup (eg., when IFS=HPFS.IFS.... /AUTOCHECK:+C+D is set, or after one
of those Netscape hangs) it takes very long to complete, in the range of
4-5 minutes for each partition even when no errors are present (or
detected?). Perhaps the first, smaller partitions even takes longer.
My home machine has two IBM SCSI drives, one 4 GB and the second 2 GB,
running from a Symbios 810 clone, with two HPFS partitions of roughly 2
GB each, and CHKDSK is *much* faster there (maybe 20 seconds for each
part.).
Oh well, I'm on Warp 4 and FP9, using the latest SCSI driver available
from the device driver pak site.
Does anyone now where to find this original package, or recall if it
really did offer to make chdksk run faster on huge drives?
Thanks for any help, MQ

Subj: Multisession CDs once again
From: pjfloyd@my-deja.com
Hi
I posted a while back about problems I was having
reading multisession CDs on either my Toshiba SD-M1201
DVD or my Yamaha CRW6416S. I did try 'jjscdrom', recently
put on Hobbes, and though its verbose output indicated
'M' for multisession, I still couldn't read more than
the first session. With hindsight, perhaps if I'd persisted,
I might have had more success.
Not one to give up easily, I put the OS/2 DDK on my
PC, and delved into the os2cdrom.dmd source. I haven't
done any SCSI programming before, but it was reasonably
clear where I had to make changes. I don't have the SCSI
interface docs for either of these devices either.
Anyway, I compiled my changes last night, and despite
one crash of the WPS, it seems to work, i.e., I can
read a multisession disk in either drive.
I would like to test this more thoroughly, but I don't
really have the resources. The DDK includes a suite of
tests, but the tests for CD require an IBM Test CD,
I've emailed IBM to ask if this is available, but no
reply yet. I could conceivably try using the kernel
debugger, but I suspect that would be a lot of work
on my part.
What next?
Reading the license agreement for the IBM DDK source,
I cannot distribute the source code I modified, but I
can distribute the object code.
Perhaps I'll put it up on Hobbes, currently I don't
have outgoing FTP access, but that shouldn't be a problem.
At the present I have ONLY added hard-coded support
for the two devices mentioned above. So far I've only done
minimal testing on a single 2 session CD-R disk.
I would like to test a single session data disk and audio
disks.
If anyone is interested in getting a copy of this version,
please get in touch by mail.
Hwyl fawr
Paul
PS If it does enhance my credentials, I do have a PhD
in optical data storage, though for me, the device
manager level is at a far, far higher level of
abstraction than that at which I worked for my thesis.

Subj: PCMCIA Setup
From: Stefan Pelz <Stefan.Pelz@orthogon.de>
Hi,
I'm trying to setup the PCMCIA support of OS/2 for a
SCSI card (Adaptec). I think the following drivers have
to be loaded:
* BASEDEV=PCMCIA.SYS - general PCMCIA support
* BASEDEV=IBM2SS014.SYS - PCMCIA socket driver
* BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD - driver for Adaptec SCSI, came with the card
* OS2SCSI.DMD - SCSI support
The PCMCIA card is already inserted at boot time and a hard drive
is attached to the card. I would have expected an additional drive
icon, but there isn't. The card and the hard drive work under Win98.
Are there any toos which allow to debug what's going wrong. Currently
I have no idea if this is a problem with the socket driver, IRQs, etc.
The hardware manager shows a PCMCIA device and SOCKET_1 and SOCKET_2
but no ressources assigned to the. Don't they need an IRQ, some I/O
etc.?
Regards,
Stefan

Sorry I do not have an answer to your actual question the time it takes
for chksdk depends on the quantity of data on the hard disk. A big but
empty hard disk should scan fast, a big and full hard disk is a
nightmare.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I thought so, too. But if this is the cause
of the problem, then the time to complete is certainly not proportional
to the amount of data on the disk. My home machine has about 280 MB on
the C: partition (5.500 files), the work machine about 600 MB (11.000
files), and the latter one takes about 4-5 times longer than the former
to CHKDSK.

Not quite. The new version runs faster because it does a single pass.
With the driver, it can also do large hard drives...where it couldn't
before. These are two separate issues.
To use the driver, add the line
BASEDEV=CHKDSK.SYS
to CONFIG.SYS. This provides an interface for acquiring additional
memory for CHKDSK (if needed) AT BOOT TIME. At all other times CHKDSK
uses virtual memory and it makes no difference.
If memory provided by CHKDSK.SYS is used, then a reboot is forced
after the check is complete, this being necessaru to reclaim the
memory. A bit alarming, but fine!

I have used Partition Magic 3.05 and the OS/2 v4 boot manager without
problems with FAT32 drives. The problem you describe really sounds more
like a Partition Magic problem than a boot manager problem. I have set
up systems with the Windows 9x on a FAT32 partition on the first
partition and OS/2 on a second logical partition. If Windows is already
installed on the C: FAT32 partion, OS/2 will not see the FAT32 partition
and so will think it is installing on the C: drive unless you create an
additional small partition ahead of OS/2 for the install. Then you
install OS/2 on what it thinks is now the D: partition and then install
Henk Kelder's FAT32 drivers into OS/2. Then boot with floppies and
delete the small partition (and reclaim the space to one of the other
two large partitions). If you've done everything correctly, OS/2 will
boot with the FAT32 drivers and will now recognize the FAT32 partition
as the C: drive and the OS/2 partition as the D: drive and OS/2 will
have read and write access to both the C and D partitions. Windows 9x
will only see the C: drive (unless you formatted the OS/2 partition to
be FAT16--a very unwise idea IMO).

Sorry, I thought the previous messages made it clear. It wasn't in the
original release, but in an early Fixpack. As such, any lines like
that are at the option of the user.

How about the other way around? Is there perhaps a

Nope, they ripped us off. Kinda like MS when they dumped OS/2 back in the 1.3
days and didn't deliver the 2.0 developer's kit. Kept the money though.

The problem is in the AIC78U2.ADD driver. The AIC7870.ADD driver suffers
from the same problem but has the advantage that it can be replaced by the
one shipped with OS/2 (or with a fixpack prior to 10) and that restores it
to normal operation. There is no prior driver for the AIC78U2.ADD so
you're stuck but there _is_ a workaround. Set up a minimal maintenance
partition and install a bootos2 copy on there. Amend its IFS line to
remove all drives except itself from the list of autochecked drives and
boot to that after a crash. Run CHKDSK from that partition once its booted
and it'll complete quickly then reboot to your correct partition.
There's no file in the updated CHKDSK that makes it run quicker - only the
fact that it's 32 bit and quicker overall. CHKDSK.SYS is for very large
drives that couldn't be autochecked at all because of a 16MB RAM limit
within the kernel at that point in the boot.

OS2SCSI.DMD is needed only if you have non-disk SCSI devices (scanner,
tape etc.). I think you need to have BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD (I have it,
but I can't remember for what device it's needed).
For a good explanation about PCMCIA configuration under OS/2, there's
a pretty good IBM Red Book on the subject:

Type HELP OS2DASD and you'll see that it is required, and

I'd be interested in learning a little bit more about "... Henk Kelder's FAT32

page or
some other source of info regarding these drivers, and hopefully locations

can be obtained from? Are they shareware / freeware, or commercial.
Obviously I'm
hoping for the freeware... but... if the price is right.

If you have Partition Magic 3.05 then you have the updated Boot Manager. You
may or
may not be using the updated Boot Manager. It doesn't matter to you because
the old
Boot Manager will handle the scenario you described. What I described was a
different
scenario and the old Boot Manager will not handle it correctly.

My Fujitsu M2513A died: it made a "clunking" sound and gave 'sector
not found' errors under three OSs. It costs $250 to fix or $280 to
buy the 640MB replacement drive anew.
Instead, I bought a Fujitsu MCD3130SS (1.3 GB max vs. the 640MB max of
the old drive) and on my system there was no need to change any
drivers. It worked as soon as I plugged it in. It's faster, though -
noticeably faster than the old drive.
The disk is virtualized with N512DASD.FLT v.001 and behaves as a
removable hard drive whether it is formatted HPFS or FAT.

Install the new drive as a secodnary drive, leaving
your old drive in place.
Boot from a set of floppies that have the updated
IBM1S506.ADD driver. The updated IBM1S506.ADD
is necessary if either drive is > 4 gig.
FDISK the new drive with partitions that match
the ones on the old drive (they can be larger
of course). You want to have matching partitions
so that the drive letters won't change when
you are running from the new drive.
If you are using HPFS for the drive the command
XCOPY c:\* x:\ /h /o /t /s /e /r /v
will copy everything and as long as the new drive has
the same drive letter assignment as the old drive had
(before it was removed) you should be able to boot
and run without any problem (famous last words :-)
Do this for each partition (drive letter) on the old drive
to a matching partition on the new drive.
Remove the old drive, make the new one the
primary drive.
If the old drive has a FAT boot partition you will
have to boot from the installation floppies and use the
SYSINSTX C: command to set up the
new drive to boot. This is not necessary with
HPFS drives.

If it's not your boot drive, that'd be as simple as an XCOPY /S /E /R /V
/T /H.
For a boot drive, you'll need to run SYSINSTX.COM to make it bootable,
while booted to the version of OS/2 that you copied to the drive.
There are also commercial duplication programs around which will make it
very simple, no doubt. But you don't need them.

It's proportional, just not linearly.
I never bothered to calculate the relationship (which wouln't be a neat
one, in any case), but it's obvious that the more files and directories,
the longer it takes.

I think that's a quote from a Dan Quayle speech? Or maybe he phrased
it, "Everything's proportional, if you've got the right quadratic
equation."

Sorry I am being nasty about it, but nearly all of the hardware/drivers
problems I have had with OS/2 related to Adaptec controllers. Things
are so smooth since I binned them.
I hope it gets fixed, but it might be worth your while checking DPT too
(I know you now got the adapter). Until DPT got to the new generation
of U2W cards with I2O technology they worked with a kind of generic
driver for all their products.
Nice :-) (OS/2 Warp 4 to my surprise runs on an I2O card without any
specific I2O drivers).
Charles (apologies for the complete irrelevance of my comment.)

Hi,
I'm sure this is an old question, but now that Odin project
is really moving forward, I would like very much to test
it.
so...for the old question....:
Can OS/2 Warp Server for e-business read NTFS partitions
on the same machine (I'm using OS/2 boot manager) ? and if yes, can
anyone tell me the secret
how to do it ?
Thanks,
Eyal Kattan

From the base operating system's FixPak Readme:
[...]
Unlike prior versions of CHKDSK, large drives ( > 8GB) may be autochecked
if sufficient memory is available. The amount of memory required can
vary between 16MB and 48MB depending on the size of the drive. To enable
the autochecking of large drives, the following line must be added to
