Subj: PMView v2.00.15859 - Screen Capture Problems
From: Steve Drewell <srd@x.mcmail.com>
Today, I noticed a few problems with PMView beta 2.00.15859 but before
mentioning anything the the author, I'd appreciate it if someone could
confirm that a problem exists or not.
When I do a screen dump, the resulting image is not identical to the
original. Text in particular shows a difference where, depending on the
font size, text appears bolder or slightly fuzzy/blurred in the captured
image.
When a full screen dump is taken, pressing F3 to view the captured image
full screen results in what appears to be a slightly "squashed" image
where the captured image is slightly down at the top and slightly up at
the bottom. It should overlay the original image exactly. Again, there is
a slight blurriness to the image.
When a full screen image is captured, image info indicates that the size
is 1152x864. When the image is saved (takes a very long time....anyone
else noticed this?) and reloaded, image info indicates that the size is
1163x864. Where did those 11 extra pixels in the horizontal direction come
from?
It's been many months since I last did a screen dump, but back then there
wasn't a problem (can't remember which version I was using). So, if
another PMView beta tester can be kind enough to confirm or deny that a
problem exists, I'd appreciate it.
In case it's relevant, I'm using an original 2MB Millennium with v2.31.100
drivers running at 1152x864x16.
Cheers,
Steve

If your a registered user, it may be worth taking a look at
http://www.pmview.com. However, it's been mentioned that PMView 2.0 will
be released very soon, so even if you are registered, you may be better to
wait a week or two and get the non-beta version.

From: Ted Sikora <tsikora@htfds1.ct.home.com>
Hi,
Are there any newsgroups for IBM's Linux apps yet? I installed the
VisualAge for Java Linux edition and am surprised at how stable it is.
I had a few problems with the JDK-1.1.6 for Linux but otherwise it's
fine. I have ViaVoice also. Looks like IBM may be switching allegiance
to a new OS. I can't help but feel OS/2 is definitely at it's end.

Maybe. In any event, IBM saw bucks in Linux apps., but I'd bet good money
they
will drop Linux as soon as the cash curve slips.

Of course.
As for OS/2 I think IBM was surprised this past year. They were hoping
to
bring OS/2 to a quiet end but lo and behold sales increased. In fact
sales were well above their predictions. Unfortunately they do not know
what to do. OS/2 does not figure in their future corporate picture so
now they may be tempted to deliberately kill it off. Software Choice
will no longer be free, including Netscape. Actually with continued
fixpaks and possibly a lower price($150 for 2-3 years like a new
release) this would be a good idea. Provided OS/2 is continually
updated(wholeheartedly) along with current additions such as Netscape,
Java, and tools like Visual Age for Java. Sort of like Linux and Open
source projects ie; Gnome, Mozilla, etc. No actual releases but
continual development. This could be the future for all software.

FANTASTIC! IT WORKS! In netscape 4.61ga strong encryption you won't find the
exact strings above. You will find NETSCAPE2.0 and ANIMEXS1. though and
altering on character disables animations after one iteration!

If you had installed JDK-1.1.6 for Linux,
try IBM's JDK-1.1.8 for Linux also.

I'll believe this one when I start seeing things like multi-media
updates on Software Choice. For instance, the fabled OS/2 version of
ViaVoice might tempt me into paying for SWC.

Jeffery,
You make a lot of good points, all of which I can neither prove nor disprove.
Which doesn't
make any difference. By now most people know you don't need to be the "BEST"
in business to
become a success. Just take Microsoft for instants. You just have to know
how to shovel the BS
and who to shovel it to.
If OS/2 has an almost non-existent effect on IBM's bottom line, then why try
and get rid of it?
Why start charging us for upgrades (I should of said fixes)? If it doesn't
effect IBM's bottom
line, why bother?
If IBM doesn't want OS/2 anymore they should just say so and get it over with.
They should just
come out and say "We made a mistake, we don't know how to package a desktop
operating system and
we apologize." Then give everybody that bought OS/2 their money back. :>
OS/2 is great. I use it all the time. The only Windows program I have is
Quicken and as soon
as I can find a checkbook program I like, I'll be getting rid of that. Even
though I think OS/2
is great, it still doesn't change the fact that OS/2 is dying. It won't die
off next month or
next year. But eventually it will and everybody will have to switch to a
different operating
system. I really hope I'm WRONG! IBMs OS/2 server won't be far behind in
dying off either.
Come what may, I'll still be using OS/2 as long as I have a wordprocessor,
database and
spreadsheet that work with it. After all I still use my Coleco Adam from time
to time.
I don't know Akers or Gerstner or what they did or didn't do for IBM. But I
do know that like
Akers, Gerstner will move on one day. Maybe even replaced by someone like
Akers or dare I say
it, someone that is interested in packaging and selling a desktop operating
system like OS/2.
NAH!
"Of course we haven't even touched upon the Linux potential which IBM is
totally committed to."
If IBM is as committed to Linux as they where to OS/2, Linux users "BEWARE."
If I was a Linux
user I would be starting a campaign to keep IBM as far away from Linux as
possible. To tell you
the truth I would rather have Microsoft committing to Linux than IBM. At
least with Microsoft
you know where you stand. Not this wishy washy stuff from IBM.
Don't be surprised if one day your IBM stock says "IBM another fine company
owned by Microsoft."
:> After all wasn't Big Blue numero uno at one time? The unquestionable IBM?
IBM could do no
wrong?
Well I could go on for days, but I won't. When you and everybody else
replies, please be
gentle.

From: Terry Kayser <tkayser@ibm.net>
Jeffery,
You make a lot of good points, all of which I can neither prove nor
disprove. Which doesn't
make any difference. By now most people know you don't need to be the
"BEST" in business to
become a success. Just take Microsoft for instants. You just have to
know how to shovel the BS
and who to shovel it to.
If OS/2 has an almost non-existent effect on IBM's bottom line, then why
try and get rid of it?
Why start charging us for upgrades (I should of said fixes)? If it
doesn't effect IBM's bottom
line, why bother?
If IBM doesn't want OS/2 anymore they should just say so and get it over
with. They should just
come out and say "We made a mistake, we don't know how to package a
desktop operating system and
we apologize." Then give everybody that bought OS/2 their money back.
:>
OS/2 is great. I use it all the time. The only Windows program I have
is Quicken and as soon
as I can find a checkbook program I like, I'll be getting rid of that.
Even though I think OS/2
is great, it still doesn't change the fact that OS/2 is dying. It won't
die off next month or
next year. But eventually it will and everybody will have to switch to
a different operating
system. I really hope I'm WRONG! IBMs OS/2 server won't be far behind
in dying off either.
Come what may, I'll still be using OS/2 as long as I have a word
processor, database and
spreadsheet that work with it. After all I still use my Coleco Adam
from time to time.
I don't know Akers or Gerstner or what they did or didn't do for IBM.
But I do know that like
Akers, Gerstner will move on one day. Maybe even replaced by someone
like Akers or dare I say
it, someone that is interested in packaging and selling a desktop
operating system like OS/2.
NAH!
"Of course we haven't even touched upon the Linux potential which IBM is
totally committed to."
If IBM is as committed to Linux as they where to OS/2, Linux users
"BEWARE." If I was a Linux
user I would be starting a campaign to keep IBM as far away from Linux
as possible. To tell you
the truth I would rather have Microsoft committing to Linux than IBM.
At least with Microsoft
you know where you stand. Not this wishy washy stuff from IBM.
Don't be surprised if one day your IBM stock says "IBM another fine
company owned by Microsoft."
:> After all wasn't Big Blue numero uno at one time? The
unquestionable IBM? IBM could do no
wrong?
Well I could go on for days, but I won't. When you and everybody else
replies, please be
gentle.
