  12. new upgrades for the classic range.
  13. The Power Flyer from Power computing
  14. is one such innovation, it brings
  15. Enhanced IDE to the Amiga A1200,
  16. along with support for hard drives
  17. over 4gb and an extra IDE port, the
  18. Power flyer promises full plug and
  19. play compatibility and transfer rates
  20. as high as 16.6mb/sec. Tempted yet?
  21. The asking price is around £50gbp
  22. which is reasonable considering the
  23. small market for Amiga goods these days.

  42. looking white cardboard box with a
  43. single floppy disk and a photocopied
  44. manual. Installation of the board is
  45. tricky to say the least, and is not
  46. helped by the fact that most boards
  47. will not fit without modifications to
  48. the under side of the unit. To
  49. install a power flyer you need to
  50. remove your kickstart ROMs and mount
  51. the power flyers PCB directly into
  52. the sockets underneath them. The ROMs
  53. are then positioned on sockets on the
  54. power flyer. A further clip is placed
  55. on top of the Gayle chip and a wire
  56. is attached to one of the pins on the
  57. now disabled IDE interface on the
  58. motherboard. This wire will allow the
  59. hard drive activity LED to activate,
  60. but because the manual is so poorly
  61. photocopied it is practically
  62. impossible to identify the correct
  63. pin. The board tested would not fit
  64. onto the motherboard without having
  65. the solder trimmed on the underside
  66. of the card, Power computing now
  67. supply a kit to raise the board a
  68. little to avoid possible problems
  69. like this and also to ease the
  70. installation of clock port
  71. peripherals.

  81. Once you have negotiated the
  82. difficult installation and connected
  83. your hard drive and any other IDE
  84. devices you are ready to power on.
  85. The board comes with just one driver
  86. diskette and because the board
  87. replaces the original scsi.device
  88. (the IDE device with the wrong name)
  89. the only thing that needs to be
  90. installed is one line in the startup
  91. sequence to activate the fast CD-ROM
  92. driver and an optional prefs program.
  93. My Power Flyer incorrectly identified
  94. my hard drive as PIO 3 which resulted
  95. in some nasty read/write errors,
  96. after correcting the problem in the
  97. installation everything worked fine,
  98. but this problem should never really
  99. have occurred and could have caused a
  100. less experienced user to loose their
  101. entire hard drive.

  103. Traditionally reviews of products
  104. like this carry some silly benchmarks
  105. to back up or otherwise the claims
  106. that the manufacturers of the product
  107. make with regard to its performance.
  108. Personally I am far too lazy to take
  109. any benchmarks, and I think that what
  110. you really want to know is does it
  111. make a notable difference to hard
  112. drive performance? The answer is yes,
  113. but a reserved yes. Powering on with
  114. a power flyer will see your workbench
  115. loading much quicker and copying
  116. files is greatly speeded up. Problems
  117. such as poor speed when searching
  118. directories with many small files and
  119. also the deletion of large files such
  120. as ISO images are not solved. This is
  121. because the problem lies not with the
  122. poor performance of the IDE
  123. controller, but with the archaic
  124. `fast` file system.

  142. of Professional Filing System II from
  143. Great Effects Developments. I really
  144. cannot recommend this software enough
  145. for owners of the Power Flyer, you
  146. certainly will not feel the full
  147. benefit of the controller unless this
  148. is installed. PFS 2 offers speeds
  149. that are at least as fast as, if not
  150. faster than the infamous FAT 32 on
  151. the PC, without the ridiculous 16kb
  152. cluster size. Owners of E-IDE Amiga
  153. disk controllers should consider a
  154. copy of PFS2 as essential as a copy
  155. of Turboprint is for your Amiga
  156. printer. This does of course make the
  157. asking price even higher, but then
  158. you would not even be considering
  159. this card unless you were a real
  160. Amiga nut just like myself.
  161. »CL0:Aside from hard drives, the power
  162. flyer supports any Atapi/E-IDE
  163. compliant device. So far the only
  164. other device I have tried is my
  165. CD-ROM drive, which now ISO`s a disk
  166. at full speed rather than the abysmal
  167. 4x speed MakeCD was originally
  168. reporting. Those who use IDE burners
  169. report some problems when burning in
  170. that the power flyer is somewhat CPU
  171. hungry, this did not seem the case
  172. with any of the devices tested on
  173. this unit, but is worth bearing in
  174. mind if Amiga CD creation is what you
  175. desire.

  181. In summation I can recommend this
  182. card to anyone who wants to get more
  183. speed out of his or her A1200 IDE
  184. controller. Amiga hardware is
  185. expensive but if you are fanatical
  186. enough to go through with the
  187. financial outlay and the somewhat
  188. tricky installation of both the Power
  189. Flyer and PFS 2 software then you
  190. will not be disappointed. If you
  191. regularly burn CDs on your Amiga then
  192. this card is something of a must buy,
  193. combined with PFS 2 the speed
  194. increase is fantastic when dealing
  195. with large ISO images and it also
  196. makes ISO image creation on the fly a
  197. possibility.
