Welcome to the Fidonet THERAPY_SERVICE_DOG Conference!
THERAPY_SERVICE_DOG is for the discussion of Therapy, Service, Signal
(Hearing), Seizure Alert, and Guide Dogs, as well as the animals used
for Animal Assisted Therapy. The discussion of other animals used in
a therapeutic or service milieu is also permitted, within reason, but
this conference is primarily "for the dogs"...
THERAPY DOGS visit confined or ill persons and provide therapy, usually
emotional or psychological. These dogs are chosen for their temperament
and trained how to behave in health care settings. Companion Dogs for an
ill, elderly, or shut-in person and Visitation Dogs are also of this genre.
SERVICE DOGS perform various tasks its owner/handler can't, and assists
them throughout the day in private and public areas. Service Dogs include
Mobility Assist Dogs, 911 Dogs, and so on.
SIGNAL or HEARING DOGS assist deaf or hard of hearing owner/handlers by
alerting them to sounds that the owner can not hear. A baby's cry, the
phone, the doorbell, the smoke alarm, as well as others.
GUIDE DOGS assist blind owner/handlers as they navigate through life.
Through a series of commands, the human partner gives instructions to
their dog, who in turn communicates to their human about any obstacles
or hazards they may encounter.
SOCIAL DOGS are Service Dogs placed with a child or an adult not capable
of caring for the dog. These dogs do not have access to public places.
The child or the adult is not responsible for the dog, the dog is under
the care/supervision of an adult/caregiver, and the dog helps by alerting
the caregiver to the disabled child/person's activities, etc.
ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY involves trained dogs who work in close conjunction
with Occupational and Physical Therapists.
SERVICE, GUIDE, and SIGNAL DOGS are allowed into public places with their
handler. Therapy Dogs are not allowed into public places, by law. The main
difference between the types of dogs/animals is that Service, Guide and
Signal Dogs work for ONE person, while Therapy Dogs are taken to a facility
to work with many people. An interesting phenomenon is the emergence of
various Guide & Service Dogs who do "double-duty" as Therapy Dogs.

This echo is dedicated to the memory of Summerfield's Ace of "HEARTS"
-- beloved Rottweiler and famed Therapy Dog, owned by Paula Cingota,
founder of "OUR BEST FRIENDS, A Therapy Dog Program."
TSD is also dedicated to the memory of Shiloh the MinPin -- my beloved
personal therapy dog. I could spend the rest of my life singing her
praises, but the continuation and growth of TSD will be her legacy.
Thank you for your cooperation,
