If I'm not mistaken, the appropriate modem module you would need is
"modem.Hayes38.4k"...I don't have a fast modem (2400) so I wouldn't know
personnaly if that works...but give it a try.

Novaterm works fine for me with a 14.4 modem.

Novaterm does not have a setting for either 14.4 or 28.8.
Go to the terminal parameters screen and set the speed to either
Hayes19.2 or Hayes38.4. Either is fine.

How much room have you got on your desk?
A few days ago I got a 1750 REU from someone. While contemplating the
same idea as Chris, I ran into a dilemma. The monitor support of my desk
is a bit less than 6 inches above the main desk area. I stood the REU
upright next to my computer and I find that it is not going to fit there
(same thing with the Swiftlink, because of its cable).
Both a cart expander and a Ramlink require carts to be inserted upright.
So I can't do it even at all. :(
Bad too, because unlike Chris, the only other modem I have to fall back
on is my 1200 bps C=1670.
