- enjoy it for the same reason I enjoyed Compute! Gazette and RUN, I like to

- I liked those replies. I, of course, am still a beginner and like the
- easiness of dieHard magazine. I see that an ad in dieHard has boomed business

- Hello Commodore Users!
-
- The Underground is about to emerge! The Underground is a new mini-magazine
- dedicated to Commodore 64 and 128 users. Why am I doing this? Because I want
- to. The Commodore community is alive and well, and needs proper
- representation.
-
- How much will this cost you? Not much. A single issue is only $2, and a
- year's subscription only $11, with issues coming every other month. As we are
- in the process of publishing our company name, please make all checks/money
- orders out to me, Scott Eggleston.
-
- If you are interested in writing for, or advertising in the Underground,
- please send me e-mail, and I'll send you everything you need to know. The
- first deadline is February first.
-
- Like many of you, I have been burned by magazines promising to deliver, and
- then vanishing into the sunset with all the profits. As a result of this,
- along with my desire to support Commodore users everywhere, I have decided to
- begin my own publication. This is a venture I will put much effort into, and
- will follow through with my promises to deliver a quality publication at a
- minimum cost. Try one issue is all I ask. The Underground, Issue no. 1 will
- be arriving in March.
-
- Sincerely,

- Even if you don't wish to write for our magazine, we would appreiciate your
- input. There are several categories in which small "articles" can be
- submitted, and although no payement is given, it is something the entire
- Commodore community can benefit from.
-
- These categories include:
-
-
- Letters to the Editor - Tell us how you feel about our publication, both what
- you like and don't, or tell us what you'd like to see in the future. Ask a
- question, and we'll answer it!
-
- Soap Box - How do you feel about Commodore related products? What kind of
- programs would you like to see? What kind of hardware do you want? How about
- an observation or two?
-
- Oldies but Goodies - This is for commercial software that you would consider
- your absolute favorite. Be brief about the program and what makes it, in your
- mind, a classic. It can be a game, application, programming tool, etc. Be
- sure to let us know if it's still available, and where we can get it!
-
- Sticks and Stones - this section is for short tips and tricks that can help
- with various programs, hardware setups, etc.
-
-
- Just send your input to my mailbox (S.Eggleston), and in all likelyhood, it
- will be in the next issue of the Underground!
-
- Thanks for your help! use. That's one feature

- Well, the Underground is aimed at all users, both begginer and advanced. How
- begginner, and how advanced? Well, that depends on the freelancers that send
- stuff in. So far as programming goes, we have an "Advanced Basic" column and
- will soon have a ML column, but the complexity remains to be seen.
-
- To get the best picture of what it'll be like e-mail for a writers guide, and
- I'll upload it directly to you here on GEnie.
-
- I talked to CMD-DOUG the other day in conference, and was excited about their
- new magazine. I was also happy to hear him say that they would not try to
- squash other magazines, but help push them. Needless to say I was grateful!

- My September issue of dieHard showed up yesterday (09/22/94). So, yes, they

-
- The FLI editor, and the SRF(Self Running FLI) files were really an eye opener

-
- You 128 owners should check this program out too, since it really puts the VIC

- match what I saw on that screen, either in FLI or in the Tour-de-Force
- demo...We need a solution for that ;)

- Rob,
-
- When talking to the author.... :)
-
- I was reading something that may be helpful, or it maybe not. I don't know,
- since I don't know ML...
-
- It was a discussion about a ML routine called from Basic, that returned to
- Basic, and then asked for a user keypress. Sometimes it waited for the press,
- but at other times it simply ignored that line. It turned out that it behaved
- differently depending upon what/how the ML did its read from a disk. When the
- original ML routine returned, it sometimes left a logical channel open, which
- the Basic used to answer the keypress request, even tho the device was closed.
-
- Something about a number other than a zero being in a peek location.
-
- Now this may have absolutely nothing to do with what you just mentioned. If
- that's the case, then please ignore everything I just said...
-
- On the other hand if you may want more of the details, let me know, and I'll
- try to remember where I saw this, and get it for you.
-
- Howie
-
- P.S. A version of Reset that runs from Basic might also be nice. I've run
- into a prob booting CP/M after native mode uses the REU (under RL). Maybe you
- could ask the author about this? Nothing elaborate. Just so it runs outside
- of Geos? <what a nice author!> :)

- All GIFs should download okay. But some GIFs have a header in front
- of the picture, which is invisible to the end user. I had this when
- I downloaded a Mac GIF, and all VGIF and GDS said was, "Not a GIF file!"
-
- The patch up is a bit on the techie side; I used a sector editor. I used
- DISKMATE from Loadstar to determine the starting address of the file.
- Then I checked the starting track and sector and used SECTOR EDITOR, also
- from Loadstar, to check it out. I opened the start of the file and got
- something like this:
-
- 00000 ... GARBAGE... 00MAC.
- TNG CAS ...GARBAGE... 00000
- ....GIF87a.................
-
- I knew that the GIF viewers needed the "GIF87a" to be at the beginning of
- the file, so I edited the sector and transferred everything from the
- two bytes before the "GIF87a" (which are equally important!) to the end
- of the sector, to the beginning of the sector. I left the rest alone.
- Lo and behold it worked!
-

- Also note that the extremely large GIFs with 256 grayscales or colors
- 320x200 will not view well on the C64 or C128 unless they are converted to
- B+W geoPaint pictures.
- Interlaced pictures will probably not be viewable at all.

- Clarification...
-
- The file "AMY.GIF.SFX" uploaded by JBEE is a geoPaint pic of Amy Grant.
- This file's description didn't mention that :D

- After downloading ZED version 0.65, I thought nothing could top it
- (except v1.00 of course :) But version 0.70 - now in the Libraries -
- has done it. The 51 line mode and just plain neat options screen
- really spoils me. The ASCII conversion is also a treat. Now, once
- wordwrap is cured, ZED will be something even bigger than it is now
- and THAT says a lot!
-
- I highly recommend ZED - it is a MUST download!
-
- OBTW- The new FlagShip File Directory from our own JBEE will take
- care of the problem of being charged $6/hr to browse. I'm sure it'll
- be worth the money (especially if you weigh how much $ you spent on
- browsing sans downloading.) :) Thanks JBEE!

-
- Paul- I must agree, ZED has impressed the heck out of me too (one of the
- reasons I felt it was important to upload it here after I found it on
- Internet). There is something poetically correct about being able to edit a
- 1600K text file with my C=128! (I've got a 1.5 Meg 1750.) With som luck, in
- a future version Craig Bruce will include support for 128's with expanded RAM
- on the motherboard a la Richard Curcio.
-
- Once wordwrap (including the "juggle lines" feature) and a few other things
- have been implemented, this will be exactly the text editor I have long been
- looking for for my 128.
-
- Ya know, ZED is an example of how I think us 8-bitters have it good. While
- Intel is racing to put out bigger and faster chips (286, 386, 486) so people
- can buy more and more powerful computers, software companies are doing their
- darndest to write software that is bigger and slower, and takes more Megs on
- your HD-- which means, of course, that everyone needs to get a computer with
- the next '86 processor, in orde to be able to run the latest software. (And,
- I bet the inefficiency of software is growing faster than processor speed and
- memory space.)
-
- Meanwhile, we get ZED, which is only 14K long, and does everything that it
- does.

- That's a very good point, Rob. :) Wish there were more 128 programs like
- Zed (especially ones that use 51-line interlace, I =love= that feature!)
-
- I might do a mention of Zed in the July MB (Dennis is our PD man, but he
- doesn't have a 128. :( )

- I agree, ZED is about the fastest and best PD text editor I've seen. One
- thing I'ld like to see in it though is a block save feature. Didn't notice
- that the author was going to include that, too bad.
-
- Yeah, the interlace screen is nice! Hardly any flicker. When I tried
- Desterm a while back I didn't like the interlace screen in there at all.
- Was really surprised as how good ZED's looked.

- Well, I'd like to add my voice to the chorus of praise properly being
- lavished upon ZED-128.
-
- I don't know if it is because it is so fast, user firendly and
- configurable (including CMD's drives), well thought out, comes with clear
- easy to follow documents, or a *VERY* productive text editor.
-
- Maybe it is all of the above. :)
-
- While I really like the functionality of CP/M's SPLIT45, to handle and
- split big files, I haven't used it much since ZED-128.

- Agreed, with both of you :), Zed is superb!
-
- BTW - The interlace in ZED is the _only_ one, out of all the programs I
- own that support interlace, that is legible on my monitor. With IPaint
- or Dialogue, I have to manually shift the screen to the right (which is
- a general cure for anyone seeing "double lines" in IPaint, etc)

- TO: W.BUSH2 and PAUL-MB RE: MacBinary headers and MacBinary formatted files
- (i.e. GIFs)
-
- I wrote a small BASIC that will extract the DATA fork from a MacBinary
- formatted file. I did this to view GIFs from a Macintosh bulletin board.
- The technical information for the file format came from GEnie's own Macintosh
- RTs.
-
- The program is in BASIC 2.0, and written on a C-64. The interface is
- "What interface?", that is, VERY amateurish. It is a programmer's program
- intended to be used by the writer only. It is also VERY slow, as in "let it
- run over night." A ML loop with a buffer should speed it up a great deal.
- Because of this, I included a "batch" mode where I use data statements with
- file names and drive numbers.
-
- Anyways, if you are interested, I could see about uploading it so that
- you can modify it.
-
- If you are interested, tell me in what format you want me to place my
- notes for the program. I can give you PETSCII, SpeedScript, or geoWrite.
