- A *NEW* magazine out there, folks! Just got the blurb today...
-
- geoVISION International (816 S.E. Polk St., Camas, WA 98607-2240) is a
- new GEOS-only magazine. It looks like this will take the place of
- geoWorld (but has no connection to it whatsoever.)
-
- Interesting to note the editor is famous geoDude Grady Brown, former editor
- of geoMetrix. The items I received were very impressive.
-
- More info can be had by writing to the above address.

- Speaking of those who got shafted by Grady Brown's last magazine going belly
- up... is he going to have any sort of deal for former geoJournal subscribers
- that had issues remaining on their subscriptions when it died? Or is
- geoVision a completely independent entity, only happening to have the same
- editor?
-
- Myself, I like the sound of geoVision... still, I was a little dissapointed by
- the small number of geoJournal issues I got before that one died. (And, the
- only reason I know it died, other than it's been 10 months since I last got an
- issue (the Sep. 91 issue), is from hearing it here.) This leaves me a touch
- cautious....

- geoJournal was continued under the stewardship of Peter Lerten apparently with
- whom Grady Brown had a parting of ways. The poop on FIDO is basically to the
- effect that Peter simply was in over his head. I'm not sure Grady is
- responsible for that fiasco. If not, it is a shame the load his name is still

-
- I would like to respond to the above few messages regarding geoJOURNAL me and
- geoVISION. Since you failed to ask me specifically anything about it you
- don't know anything about it. And since you are adding to the poor (and
- libelous) information I feel I had better set you straight right here and
- now.
-
- Yes, I was one of the editors of geoJOURNAL from issue #8 through #14 when I
- then resigned from geoJOURNAL and quit my membership with geoMETRIX because of
- various management problems.
-
- I was the editor. That was all. You see, Pete Lerten was the President of
- the group and if you read the information box of the staff, you'll notice that
- Pete was also in charge of printing, labeling, and mailing of all issues.
- All I had control over was the complete design, layout, and contents of each
- issue. Once I made masters and handed them over to Pete, he (PETE) was in
- complete control from then on. Some of the varied problems were, his taking
- longer to print each issue up and get them into the mail. Aother problem was
- (at least his excuse was) the subscribers complaining they weren't getting
- their issues and he told us it was because it was going out BULK mail and
- getting lost. I know quite a few postal workers and this could not have been
- the case. For over four months I tried to get him to keep on time with the
- printing nd get each one into the mail on time, with no luck. He would do
- what he liked since this was his business. At that time I told him I would be
- quiting if things didn't straighten up. They did not get cleaned up and I
- kept getting dirty letters from disgruntled subscribers and members (who
- thought that I had complete control). I gave Pete my written notice of
- resignation with about five pages of complaints I had on how he was running
- this into the ground. This was in Nov 1991, and told him I would finish issue
- #14 and when it was handed to him for printing and distribution in December
- 1991 that, that was all I would have to do with him or his group. In that
- last (#14) issue I explained that I was stepping down in my editorial and that
- Pete would be taking over the geoJOURNAL too.
-
- From what I hear, no one (but a VERY few) have issue #14. So very few know
- that I quit the group. I also told Pete that if my name is damaged in any way
- shape or form, he had better try and clear up the mix up or he'll be hearing
- from my attorney. I see that this is still damaging my name and will be
- ttaking this up with him, even over a year later.
-
- I have placed into my business plan for geoVISION International many features
- that will keep that previous sort of thing from happening again. I will not
- treat this in any other way but fully professional. I offer a great GEOS
- publication of information that all skills of GEOS users can use. I will not
- let anything happen to this business. It is here for all GEOS users and
- programmers as a forum or platform to continue on as long as there are people
- using GEOS on their Commodores.
-
- True, I do not send out free issues, or samples but what real magazine or
- technical journal does? RUN? COMPUTE? GEOWORLD? Nope [e! A single issue
- can be purchased for $4.00 and that will give you a good idea as to order time
- and the publications content. If you still don't trust us, then just order a
- single issue at a time until proven. I don't blame you, I was taken real bad
- by gM and gJ as well as many other CBM magazines when they went under. I will
- not let geoVISION International go under. GEOS is so much fun for me and so
- is geoPublishing. It's my life and my love.
-
- If you have any further questions, please ask me directly by E-Mail and not
- post erroneous information in public, where it damages people with rumors and
- incorrect information second hand. I'd like to get this all behind me and
- move on with my life. If I had anything to do with any of the previous
- problems of gM and gJ, I'd surely make them right. But I don't. I am sorry
- that this was needed but I hope it clears up a few things.

-
- Thanks for clearing all of that up. Indeed, I, as most everyone else, did not
- get issue #14 of geoJournal, and thus except for unsure suggestions that
- others made, had no basis for anything other than wanton speculation. Nothing
- libelous about it, we didn't know what the truth was, and didn't state that
- something was the truth, merely wondered based on the limited information we
- had. Now we know, and I am grateful that you have cleared this up for us.
- For the sake of those who are not online but who are wondering, it might be
- good to include this in a future gV editorial.
-
- Even looking at the staff box of a magazine, it is difficult for people to
- know who is really responsible when a magazine dies without even a last
- whimper. I have this (erroneus) tendency to view the person next to the name
- "Editor" as "Supreme Commander," and I think a lot of other people do the same
- thing. If I stop and think about it, I would realize that the Editor is very
- much at the mercy of the Publisher, but the impression lasts.
-
- It may be sad that you were forced to defend yourself by posting this message,
- but it was indeed necessary, and it is good that you have laid it all on the
- line like this. When people hear your name, they will recognize it, remeber
- the geoJournal connection, and then wonder what happened to geoJournal. The
- fact is, you were associated with geoJournal, and the only way to stop wanton
- speculation is not to trust people to come to a well reasoned conclusion based
- on the meager information they have, but to come out and be completly open
- about it, as you have been. Sad, but the facts of life.
-
- Re: free issues: there is at least one magazine that has some sort of policy
- of sending out free issues, Twin Cities 128/64. Personally, I know of no
- other. I think the difference between something like Twin Cities and/or
- geoVision and magazines like RUN, Compte!'s Gazette (before the merging), and
- the glossies of most other platforms, is that in principle one can wander into
- a store or newsstand and flip through a copy of that magazine on the racks
- there. This option is not available for magazines like Twin Cities or
- geoVision which don't have any newsstand distribution.
-
- Everybody: based on the first two issues, geoVision is a very good value. It
- is beautifully laid out on a nice stock of paper, showing what one really can
- do with geoublish. It contains good information, and if you have any
- interested in GEOS I would heartily recommend it. I look forward to receiving
- the future issues of gV in my subscription.

- I hope nothing I said was among what you considered libelous Grady! I
- thought I was defending you, or at least repeating as much of the true story
- as eventually leaked elsewhere. I don't think anyone here meant anything
- negative at all about you or your magazine... I think that all anyone might be
- feeling is that the situation was unfortunate for whatever reason, and may
- cause some to pause. I am not a GEOS person at all... I did not subscribe to
- any of the ones that have gone under and nothing personal, but I won't be
- subscribing to this new one. That is only because of my lack of enthusiasm
- for GEOS.
-
- I can only speak for myself, but I bet the rest of the staff will echo this.
- I wish you the best. What is good for you is good for us. Especially if you
- will have a presence on board the *FlagShip*. It is people like you, CMD,
- TC64/128, LoadStar, etc. that keep our orphans alive and thriving. (Hey,
- some of my best friends use GEOS... heh heh) The previous magazine had, if
- nothing else, established a great reputation for editorial content! It was
- very well-spoken-of by everyone I read posts from anywhere. If you provide
- the same level of support in this venture, I'm sure you'll succeed.... and

-
- JB: TC-128/64 always has and I have gotten free issues from INFO, AHOY,
- RUN, Computer Shopper, Computer Monthly, and a host of others. Most
- magazines today offer 1-3 free trial issues and a refund of your money
- (pro-rated) if you are not happy with the 1st three issues. Check out

- In my opinion, not giving out free issues isn't "90s" and if you

- I heard from a friend of mine that if you call 1-800-831-2694, you can get a
- free issue of Loadstar. I already subscribe to it, so there's no reason for
- me to do it, but if you don't subscribe to Loadstar, and you'd like to get the
- opportunity to check it out ABSOLUTLY FOR FREE, and I can't think of a better
- way, then call the number above and check it out. If you like it, get a
- subscription! It's one of the few places I know of to still get GREAT
- Commodore support and their prices for the subscription are very reasonable.
- Loadstar is in my estimation, one of the best "peripherals" you can add on to
- your computer. Each month they include games, programming, graphics,
- utilities and applications covering such a wide range of topics, plus
- advertising, etc. If you like your 64/128 and you want to see the computer
- stay alive with new software available to it, then you want to subscribe to
- Loadstar. Anyway, this issue is free, so check it out, and tell a friend!
- That's 1-800-831-2694, yes you heard right, FREE LOADSTAR ISSUE, just call 1-
- 800-831-2694.....crazy Eddie, I'm after your job!!!!!

- And remember that there are 2 different issues of Loadstar, on is the 64

- Where are the magazines? Well, Compute's Gazette section has been put to
- rest. The December 1993 issue is the last one, as they are saving money by
- transferring it to their monthly Gazette disk.
-
- There is another magazine that is getting better, that is dieHard. 10 issues a
- year for only $15.00. They also have a disk, 10 issues for $45.00. They also
- take a look at one issue, $1.75 for magazine, $5.00 for disk.
-
- Try it yourself and make your decision! Mail to: dieHard - P.O. Box 392 -

- Diehard is a good magazine. I also like TC-128/64. It tends to have some
- good technical articles in it. Both these tend to cover the Commodore well.
- The Gazette, disk based publications sounds like it will have a lot in it.
- These aren't the only ones on the scene evidently there is a market, or new
- mags wouldn't be popping up.

- I think the only way that Compute will continue with the monthly disk will be
- because it will be cheaper than Loadstar. I subscribe to Loadstar, both the
- 64 & 128 versions, but that can get very expensive (about $120 for both for
- one year, vs $49.95 for Gazette). It's hard to decide which, you have to
- subscribe to both to get a taste of each.
-
- I will try the Gazette disk, as soon as they send me my refund on my magazine
- subscription, which I renewed up to July of 1995.
-
- As for TC 64/128, I don't know if I want to try them. I have heard of
- problems with them, issues come out once in who knows when, refunds are hard
- to get. When I hear from other people, and I have heard a lot, then their
- input helps my decision.
-
- There was another, can't remember the name, but same goes for that one.

- During the Tom Netsel conference he indicated that the price would be $29.95
- (I believe I'm to the penny) until March. So if you are getting the disk, you
- will want to get it within the next few months.

- For Starters I would like you to know I am far from being an expert, but I
- would like to know what you think the new Gazette disk issue will be like I am
- looking for good support for my 128D and plan on trying to figure out how to
- ML program. Let me know what you think. F.WILSON4

- Well I'm waiting to order the disk until my Gazette magazine refund arrives.
- They owe me 1 year, 7 months worth.
-
- As for support for the 128, how about taking a look at Loadstar 128 Quarterly.
- Only $39.95 for 1 year (4 issues, each quarterly). Call them at 1-800-831-
- 2694. They of course also have the monthly Loadstar 64.

- Re: Iron.Man's disatisfaction with DIEHARD magazine.
-
- WHAOOO Dude!! different strokes for different folks... etc.
-
- If you need highly technical magazine articles on the cutting edge of
- Commodore eight-bit art, then you need TC 64/128. BUT PLEASE, don't disparage
- DIEHARD for providing an excellent magazine for the rest of us multitudes who
- haven't really mastered Basic and only dream about ML. Every month DIEHARD
- arrives with many excellent tips for beginner and casual 'commie' user. I,
- for one, really enjoy the reviews of 'ten-year-old' software. A lot of us
- haven't 'seen-it-all' and appreciate the information about what gems to look
- for at the garage sales.
-
- At our user group meetings, I am continually reminded all of us were
- beginneers once. People are still finding that a cheap C=64 picked up at a
- garage sale is an inexpensive way to find out what this computer stuff is all
- about. For them DIEHARD is an excellent guiding hand to learn the wonders of
- Commodore computing. --do you remember when you learned that "load *,8"
- wouldn't always work, that sometimes you needed to add ',1',only to discover
- that didn't always work either and why?--
-
- I usually reccomend both LOADSTAR and DIEHARD to new users. They frequently
- find DIEHARD to be the more economical choice until they get a little more
- used to their computor. Then they become enthusiastic LOADSTAR supporters.
- Occasionally as they aquire more equipment and skill they will hunger for more
- detailed Commodore info. Then they join the rest of us in anxiously awaiting
- for when a new TC 64/128 might appear.
-
- Remember -- it takes all kinds...
-
- respectfully, Gayln T. :)

- Gayln,
-
- Those C= users who like dieHard will continue to like it reguardless of what I
- say. My intention was to tell other programmers (and somewhat advanced users)
- not to waste their time/money if they expected new programming oriented
- material or techniques. I've had a C= since 1981 and have seen the same
- material rehashed over and over. For me and many others it was/is a waste of
- money.
-
- Hope I didn't offend anyone since that was not my intention...
