TAILHOOKED
The sex-abuse scandal that followed 1991's Tailhook
convention of Navy and Marine pilots has shot down a Navy
Secretary and held up thousands of promotions. Now two top
admirals have been hooked -- for other incidents. Vice Admiral
Jerry Tuttle, 57, named to head the Navy's air arm, was denied
promotion for sexist jokes in a newsletter he writes. Rear
Admiral Joseph Prueher, 49, named to take command of the Third
Fleet, was gigged for a 1989 episode at Annapolis, where he was
the No. 2 man, when male midshipmen handcuffed a female classmate
to a urinal.
BITTER PILL
The Supreme Court may have sustained American women's right
to choose abortion, but it still seems willing to limit the ways
to have one. In a test case involving the French abortion pill
RU-486, the Justices by a 7-to-2 vote upheld an appellate-court
ruling that bars return of the drug to a pregnant woman. U.S.
customs agents had seized the pills from Leona Benten, 29, who
had legally acquired them abroad. The court left open the
question of the constitutionality of the U.S. ban on RU-486.
Benten now plans to have a surgical abortion.
