  2.       DEEP SPACE NINE: "Inquisition" - REV. 1/29/98 - ACT THREE     36.
  3.
  4. 27   CONTINUED:    (6)
  5.
  6.     Sloan plays this delicately, picking up on the
  7.     unresolved dynamic between Bashir and Sisko, aware that
  8.     heavy-handed grilling will demolish his work.
  9.
  10.                     SLOAN
  11.             That's right, he did. But why?
  12.                 (to Bashir)
  13.             What made you confess, Doctor?
  14.             Was it because you realized it was
  15.             your duty to be honest with your
  16.             captain?
  17.
  18.     Bdshir is ashamed of deceiving Sisko, and he knows it
  19.     won't make him look good, but telling the truth is the
  20.     only honor he can salvage from that event in his life.
  21.
  22.                     BASHIR
  23.
  24.                 (quietly)
  25.             No.
  26.
  27.                     SLOAN
  28.             Was it because you felt guilty
  29.             about having lied to him for so
  30.             long?
  31.
  32.                     BASHIR
  33.                 (even more quietly)
  34.             No.
  35.
  36.                     SLOAN
  37.             Then why did you come forward?
  38.
  39.                     BASHIR
  40.                 (shattered)
  41.             Because I'd been found out.
  42.
  43.                     SLOAN
  44.                 (softly)
  45.             And if you hadn't been found out?
  46.             Would you have come forward and
  47.             told your captain the truth...
  48.             ever?
  49.
  50.     Bashir can't honestly say he would've...
  51.
  52.                     BASHIR
  53.             I don't know.
  54.
  55.     Sloan pauses, allowing the full weight of this
  56.     revelation to settle on Sisko's shoulders.
  57.
  58.                     SLOAN
  59.             I see.
  60.
