- sins of the ST scene
-
- reported by Grey / Mystic Bytes

-
- Sometimes I wonder why the hell many ppl from polish scene ignored the ST and
- didn't let this nice computer become the follower of the older 8-bit Atari...
- why was this scene that UNFAMOUS in eyes of the others? Did this computer
- REALLY deserve such hard treatment? Partly... YES. But not only due to its
- possibilities... it all depends on the community who draw a picture of each
- machine. That's of course only my PERSONAL opinion but I am gonna prove it by
- throwing out some examples...
-
- Let's go back to the good old times when the war between A500 and STs began.
- Scenish stuff for Ami was always miles ahead... great design, asskicking
- soundsync, neat graphics... Original music with original effects...
-
- ST demos... Welcome to *ETERNAL* oldschool, guyz. I am sure that many ppl were
- jealously looking at Ami screens... Our demos were DIFFERENT to put it
- delicately. Some ppl seemed to be TOO LONG fascinated with new styles of txt-
- scrolls displayed in various forms, jumping rasters, unlimited bobs, plasmas
- etc... that was kinda "funny" and couldn't work well for our respect in the
- eyes of others. In that time I've seen TWICE better things on the C-64 or 8-bit
- Atari. And just keep in mind that ST was treated as a main rival of A500...
-
- But the biggest sin of the ST scene was... *SOUND RIPPING*. That was just a
- real shame listening to the same tune known from X demo in another and another
- production, often used *WITHOUT* a permission of the composer. Something like
- that would be just HEAVY BRANDED on the Ami scene. They were fighting against
- such kinds of behaviour and I think they were f*ckin' right. Not to mention
- about the brutal rips of fonts from Crackart seen in 10s prods or even parts of
- graphics. Sorry folx but this SUXX! I never couldn't understand it and I still
- can't!
-
- The style of ST demos was also a bit annoying... Flying by a horse or other
- monster (of course controlled by... joystick! Geesus!!!) to touch a door and
- see what's hidden behind... You can hate me now but I just wasn't able to
- digest it... and I still can't forget the weird facial expressions of other
- sceners looking at this... just imagine: sitting in front of the machine
- keeping joystick in hand and... WATCHING DEMOS (or PLAYING IN DEMOS?). Wot a
- marvellous picture... :)
-
- Of course there was some BLOODY GOOD exceptions. Just like "Brain Damage" from
- Aggression... gosh, man! I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK WATCHING IT FOR THE FIRST
- TIME! Wot fuckin' ace stuff! Total asskick! :) STe rulez! Nice design, great
- choice of colors, smooth effects, high quality soundtrack... That was a real
- surprise for me, the sign that our scene CAN change! A short time later I was
- surprised once again - Grotesque demo. And again - Tekkno demo! Woah! Not bad!
- More stuff like that pleez! Arf... I can't forget about a real pearl for std ST
- - FLIP-O demo by Oxygene! French wizards! Amazing stuff, pure hardcore classic
- till today!
-
- But there wasn't too many surprises anymore for a long time... till the end of
- the 90's when such crews as Syntax, Confusions, Checkpoint and Cream started to
- show their claws! There was a new era in ST coding coming up! Finally, 'coz I'd
- begun to doubt in ST's possibilities... :/ And chaps from these crews managed
- to prove it's a really kewl machine! It's only so sad it happened so late...
- Bloody exceptions in a sea of misunderstandings...
-
- But nothing is lost yet! ST pretty well rebuilt the lost respect thanx to the
- current scene! Heavy hand-shakes 2 guys from Cobra, DHS, Stax, Checkpoint,
- Sector One, Cream, ResGods, tSCc, Dune... and all I forgot! (but shouldn't!)
- You are the real-mastas, keep up the good work! ST LIVES and NEEDS YOU! :))
