  4.                  Chapter 20.  The Resurrection.

  6. l. Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene. v. 1-18.

  8.      Mary came while it was yet dark, the stone had been taken away.
  9.      v.1.
  10.      She ran and told Peter and John. v.2.
  11.      John arrived first, did not enter the tomb but looked in and
  12.      saw the linen clothes. v. 3-5.
  13.      Peter arrived and entered the tomb. v.6-8. He, and then John,
  14.      saw the napkin in a place by itself and also the linen
  15.      clothes.
  16.      Contrast this to Lazarus' resurrection.  John 11:44.  Lazarus
  17.      came forth bound and had to be loosened from the grave
  18.      clothes.
  19.      Jesus arose right out of the grave clothes and the hundred
  20.      pounds of spice.  He left them intact as an empty form,
  21.      having the shape of His body.  His glorified body had risen
  22.      right out of the linen clothes and spices in the same manner
  23.      as He could pass through the walls of the room, the doors
  24.      being shut.  Such is the power of the Glorified Body! John
  25.      believed that Jesus had risen from the dead. v. 8
  26.      Mary stood without weeping and looked into the tomb. v. 11.
  27.      She saw the two angels who asked, "Woman why weepest thou?"
  28.      Jesus revealed Himself in the depths of her sorrow, v. 14-17.
  29.      Note v. 17.  Jesus said to Mary, "Touch He not; for I am not
  30.      yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto
  31.      them, I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God,
  32.      and your God."
  33.      Later in the day they met Him and held Him by the feet
  34.      (Matt.28:9) and were invited by Him to handle Him and touch
  35.      Him (Luke 24:39).  In John 20:17, He did not wish Mary to
  36.      detain Him at this time because He had to ascend to the Father
  37.      as the Great High Priest to present the Blood of the
  38.      everlasting Covenant before the Father.  Lev. 16, Heb.9:11-12
  39.      The expression "I ascend" is present tense, and means right
  40.      now.

  42. 2.Jesus appeared to the Disciples, Thomas being absent. v. 19-25.
  43.      Contrast this with His appearance to Mary:
  44.      in the morning...........here in the evening,
  45.      in the open..............here  behind looked doors,
  46.      to one...................here to many.

  48.      Jesus In the midst". v.19. Cf. Matt. 18:20, Rev.1:13, 5:6.
  49.      The salutation, "Peace be unto you".  This is used in many of
  50.      the Epistles.  Jesus showed them His hands and His side. (Note
  51.      Ps. 22:16)  The Jesus crucified on the Cross is the Jesus of
  52.      the Resurrection!
  53.      In v.22 the Lord Jesus breathed on them the Holy Spirit in the
  54.      new birth (cf. Gen. 2:7, 1 Peter 1:3), whereas on the day of
  55.      Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came as a mighty rushing wind in the
  56.      great overwhelming Baptism.  Note Luke 24:49 where He promised
  57.      the Gift of the Holy Spirit in the future, after He had breathed
  58.      upon them of the Holy Spirit.  Thus the Baptism of the Holy
  59.      Spirit (rushing, mighty wind) is subsequent to the new birth
  60.      (the gentle breath).
  61.      The ministry of forgiveness of sins is delegated to the whole
  62.      church, for wherever the Word of God is preached, men's sins
  63.      are either forgiven, as they accept the Word, or retained if
  64.      they reject the Word. v. 23,

  66. 3.   Jesus appeared to the Disciples, Thomas being present. v.26-31.
  67.      After eight days, again in the room, the doors being shut.
  68.      Thomas, being full of doubt, demanded proof by means of the
  69.      senses of sight and touch.

  71.      Again "Jesus in the midst." The message, "Peace be unto you."
  72.      Jesus' invitation to Thomas.
  73.      Thomas' confession of faith---The Resurrected Jesus, his Lord
