The Gospel of John Lesson. 22.
Chapter 21. Service.
Lord Jesus appeared to SEVEN disciples at the Sea of Galilee.
It was the third time Jesus appeared to groups of His
disciples. v.14 and it was His Seventh appearance after His
resurrection.)
1. Peter led the disciples in going fishing. v.1-5.
All night laboring. Result--nothing.
Compare this incident with Luke 5:1-11 at the time they were
called into the service of the Lord.
2.Jesus led the disciples in fishing. v. 6-11,
a.Jesus commanded ... The disciples obeyed. v. 6.
A few minutes labor. Result--a great multitude of
fishes.
b.Jesus commanded to bring in the fish. The disciples
obeyed. v.10-1 A few minutes labor. Result--153 great
fishes brought to shore.
Note the miracle of the Unbroken Net. Contrast Luke 5:6.
The last day revival will not fail--the "net" will not
break!
3.Breakfast with Jesus. v. 12-25.
The Disciples were His guests, Such an ordinary task as
preparing breakfast is glorified by the Lord Jesus. Look for
Christ in the commonplace.
(The angel of the Lord prepared a meal for Elijah. 1 Kings
19:5-7.) The disciples had communion with Christ through the
bread and the Fish. The Broken Bread speaks of the Cross,
what Christ has done for us. The Fish speaks of Service,
what we can do for Christ.
These two elements are necessary to have full communion
with the Lord
LOVE must be the true motive of Service. v.15-17.
Peter denied Christ three times. Matt. 29:34,75.
Now Christ questioned Peter three times.
Christ would examine us as to our love for Him.
Two Greek words are used for the word "love" in v.15-17.
"Agapao" means to love ardently, supremely, perfectly.
"Phileo" means to love as a friend, or to esteem as a friend.
= Jesus used "agapo" = Peter answered, using "phileo".
= Jesus used "agapo" = Peter answered, using "phileo".
= Jesus used "phileo" = Peter answered, using "phileo".
Peter had thought that he had a great, ardent love for Jesus
but denied Him.Now he realised his weakness and frailty.
Thrice he denied Jesus, thrice he is questioned by Jesus. And
Jesus questioned him the third time, saying "Peter, do you
love me as a friend ("phileo")?"
The Pastoral Commission: (Renewed and re-established Peter's
call and office.
a.Feed My lambs. v.15
b."Feed (Tend, take care of, govern. guide) My sheep." v. 16.
c."Feed My sheep." v. 17.
The word "feed" in v. 15 & 17 means to give food to, whereas
the wore "feed" in v.16 means to tend a flock, to take care
of, guide, govern, and defend. Note 1 Pet. 5:2, Acts 20:28.
The Death of the Believer. v. 18-25
Peter's martyrdom foretold. Peter will love ("Agapao") Christ
enough die for Him. Before Peter said he would die for Him and
did not; now Jesus said that Peter would die for Him and he did,
(Tradition says by crucifixion head down.) Concerning John's
death. v.20-25.
"If I will that he tarry, till I come.." shows that Jesus will
come again and that the living in Christ at that time will not
die (1 Cor. 15:51-55, 1 Thes. 4:14-18.)
