The Gospel of John Lesson 20
Chapter 19, The Crucifixion.
1. Jesus before Pilate. v.1-16a (continued from John 18:28-40)
d. Inside the Judgment Hall. Pilate, the soldiers and Jesus.
v.1-3.
Jesus scourged. Cf. Matt.27:26, Mark 15:15.
With His Stripes (Heb, stripe or bruise) we are healed."
Isa. 53:5, 1 Pet. 2:24. He was bruised that we might be well.
He carried our sicknesses as well as our sins,
Jesus crowned with thorns. Cf.Gen. 3:18. He bore the curse of
the ground for He will yet deliver this earth and make it the
place where He shall rule and reign.
Jesus arrayed in regal robes and mocked, both as King and as
the Son of God.
e. Outside the Judgment Hall, Pilate, the Jews, and Jesus.
v.4-8.
Pilate declared there was no fault in Jesus.
Jesus came forth, mocked by men. "Behold, the Man!" He is the
only true Man. How often He spoke of Himself as "the Son of
man." He is the Last Adam (there will be none after Him), He
is the Second Man, the Lord from heaven. (1 Cor. 15:45-47)
The Jews clamoured for His death and Pilate yielded,
acknowledging that he was perverting justice.

Jesus silent.
Pilate talked of power, but had none.
Jesus declared that Pilate's power was only by Divine
Providence.
g. Outside the Judgment Hall. Pilate, the Jews, and Jesus.
v.12-16. Pilate was afraid of impeachment. v.12-13.
He brought Jesus forth, announced Jesus as King of the Jews,
and surrendered Jesus to be crucified.
We have no king but Caesar!" What terror and persecution
Caesar and his successors (eg. Hitler) have brought upon the
Jews!
2. Jesus Crucified, v. 16b-37.
At Golgotha, between two thieves, "Jesus in the Midst."
The title on the Cross, "This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King
of the Jews." Cf. Matt. 27:37, Mark 15:26, Luke 23:38. In
three languages, Hebrew, Greek,and Latin.
His clothes divided among four soldiers. v. 23-24.
Jesus committed Mary into the hands of John. v. 26-27.
Jesus thirsted.
Jesus died. "IT IS FINISHED!"
Not a bone of Him was broken. A prophecy fulfilled. Christ
the Pascal Lamb. Ex. 12:46, Num. 9:12, Ps.34:20.
His Body pierced. Water and Blood came forth. Cf. I John
5:6-8.
3. Jesus Buried. v. 38-42.
Joseph of Arimathaea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus.
Nicodemus assisted him.

The body of Jesus wrapped in the linen clothes with the
hundred weight of spices and placed in a new tomb in the
garden nearby. Cf. Isa. 53:9.
