The Gospel of John Lesson 19
Chapter 18. the Betrayal.
Compare Matt. 26:36-27:26, Mark 14:32-15:15, Luke 22:39-23:25.
1. Jesus betrayed by Judas Iscariot. v. 1-11.
After the prayer, Jesus and His disciples went to
Gethsemane, crossing Cedron. It is a deep ravine, Cedron means
"dark or turbid". Cf. 2 Sam. 15:23.
Judas led the mob . v. 2 - 3.
Jesus went forth to meet them, and said, "Whom seek ye?"
v.4-9 "Jesus of Nazareth." The same name was placed on the
Cross (John 19: 19), used by the angel at the Resurrection
(Mark 16:6), and by the apostle Peter on the day of Pentecost
(Acts 2:22) and at the house of Cornelius (Acts 10:38).It is
the Name of His humiliation - now exaltation
Note Jesus' answer, "I Am!" (v.5)and also again in v.8.
The results--They were prostrated! The Power of the Name "I
Am:" Jesus' deity shone forth even in His betrayal.
Peter used the sword. Jesus had no use for the sword. He
came to die, to do the will of the Father. v.10-11.
2. Jesus brought before the High Priest. v.12-27.
The Ecclesiastical Trial.
He was brought first to Annas and then to Caiaphas. v.12-14,24.
Peter's denial. v.15-18. (John was with Peter at that time).
He who had been bold to cut off a man's ear, was weak in
denying the Lord before a maid. v. 25-27.
Jesus questioned by the high priest. v.19-24.
His answer, "The world knows, they have heard, ask them..."
3. Jesus brought before Pilate. v. 28-40,
The Civil Trial.
a. Outside the Judgement Hall, Pilate and the Jews. v. 28-32.
The Jews had to bring Jesus to Pilate in order to have authority
to impose capital punishment.
Pilate asked for the accusation. v. 29.
No accusation given--only hate shown.v. 30
The Jews were careful not to be defiled in order to eat the
passover lamb. What a contrast to the defilement and sin in
their hearts toward the true Lamb of God! Man can be
particular in religious form and orthodoxy and yet be full of
sin and defilement. In order for Jesus to be crucified He
must die under the Roman government for their mode of capital
punishment was crucifixion whereas stoning was the mode of
capital punishment with the Jews. v. 32. Cf.John
3:14, 8:28, 12:32, Gal. 3:13.
b. Inside the Judgement Hall, Pilate and Jesus, v.33-38a.
Pilate questioned Jesus. "Art thou the King of the Jews?"
"Art thou a king?" "What is truth?"
Jesus' kingdom is not of this world. It is from above. v.36
Note the expression "My Kingdom" three times in v. 36.
Jesus is King!
His is the Kingdom of Truth. v. 37.
c. Outside the Judgement Hall. Pilate and the Jews. v. 38b-40.
Pilate declared there was no fault in Him.
Yet the Jews preferred a robber rather than a Saviour.
v.39-40.
