The Gospel of John lesson. 8.
Chapter 7. Feast of Tabernacles.
1. Jesus urged to go to the Feast of Tabernacles. John 7:1-13
The Jews' hatred of Him.
His brethren's unbelief in Him.
Their words were the voice of Satan urging Him to move out of
His Father's will in order to vindicate Himself.
However Jesus moved in the will of His Father and had gone up
to the feast secretly.
The world at enmity with the Lord Jesus. v. 7.
Divided opinion concerning Him. v. 12-13.
2. Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles. John 7:14-53.
This Feast took place in the 7th month, the 15th to the 21st.
Lev. 23:33-44.
Deut. 16:13-17. This was the feast of ingathering when
Israel rejoiced before the Lord and dwelt in booths made of
the boughs and branches of trees. There were three feasts at
which all males were to be present, i.e. Passover, Pentecost,
and Tabernacles. Ex. 23:14-16, 34:22-33. Two have been
fulfilled and the one remaining feast, that is the Feast of
Tabernacles will be fulfilled in the end of this age, in the
great revival and ingathering of the last days!
a. Christ's teaching is from the Father. v. 14-19
A willing heart required. v. 17. Then we shall know!
b. Opposition to Jesus. v. 19-36.
Jesus declared that He came from God, was sent by God,
and would return to God.
Satan filled the hearts of the people with hatred toward
Christ, until they desired to kill Him.
c. The Great Prophecy concerning the Gift of the Spirit.
John 7:37-39. The last day of the feast was the eighth
day. Lev. 23:36. Num. 29:35. On this day, at the hour
of the morning sacrifice, water from the pool of Siloam
was brought in a golden pitcher by the priest accompanied
by a joyous procession of music. When the water was
poured at the altar great shouts of praise burst from the
multitude of worshippers and they sang the "Hallel"
(Psalms 113-118). This was indeed a joyous feast. (Cf.
Isa. 12:3, 55:1). At this moment Jesus stood and cried,
"If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink!". He
claimed to be the fulfillment of this ceremony. He
claimed to be the source of living water! He must
therefore be the Son of God, Deity incarnate. This was
fulfilled on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) when the
Holy Ghost was given after Jesus was glorified. v. 39.
The Rock must be smitten at Calvary before the living
waters of the Spirit could pour forth. (Ex. 17:6).
The greater fulfillment of this prophecy will be in the
end of this age in the last day outpouring of the Holy
Spirit. The Feast of Tabernacles is the feast of
ingathering and rejoicing!
d. The Results. v. 40-53.
Many said, "This is that Prophet." (Deut. 18:15,18).
Others said, "This is the Christ." Some did not believe.
The officers were afraid to take Him.
The Pharisees and some of the people stumbled because of
prejudice and a partial knowledge of prophecy.
Nicodemus took his stand for Christ in the face of great
opposition.
"Every man went to his own house" i.e. no longer dwelt
in booths.
Instead of returning from this feast with great joy, they
went home with hate and malice toward the Son of God!
The Eternal Word is the Giver of the holy Ghost.
