  3.                        Chapter 8. The Light of the World.

  5. 1.   The Woman taken in adultery.  John 8:1-11.
  6.      This must be understood in the light of Chapter 7. It
  7.      occurred at the close of the Feast of Tabernacles and is
  8.      symbolic of the ingathering of sinners at the end of this
  9.      age.  Cf.  Luke 14:21-23.

  11.      Jesus went unto the Mount of Olives. v.1 Later it was here
  12.      that He prophesied of His coming again.  His feet will yet
  13.      stand on this mount.  As He taught in the Temple (v.2) the
  14.      scribes and Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery to
  15.      tempt Christ.  They raise the question, " Moses commanded ....
  16.      but what sayest Thou?" It is necessary for us to understand
  17.      the difference between the Old Covenant and the New; between
  18.      law and grace; between Moses and Christ. (Cf.  John 1:17).
  19.      Note Deut. 22:13-24 where Moses gave the law concerning
  20.      stoning because of the sin of adultery.  Cf.  Ezekiel
  21.      16:38-40, 23:45-49 where Israel and Judah are portrayed as
  22.      women who had committed adultery, worthy of being stoned.

  24.      There was a great deal of hatred and insinuation in the
  25.      enemies of Christ bringing this woman to Him for they knew
  26.      full well that Jesus claimed to be born of the Virgin Nary,
  27.      but they thought that Mary had committed adultery exactly as
  28.      mentioned in Deut. 22;23-24, when she was betrothed to
  29.      Joseph.  Note John 8:41 where they said, "We be not born of
  30.      fornication..."

  32.      Jesus wrote on the ground, not on tables of stone.  What He
  33.      wrote we do not know.  Contrast the Finger of God writing the
  34.      Law on tables of stone unto condemnation (Ex. 31:18) with the
  35.      Finger of God in Christ writing on the ground unto Grace and
  36.      Forgiveness!
  37.      They were convicted by the words of Jesus and went away, "For
  38.      all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."
  39.      (Rom.3:23) "Go and sin no more." Conviction, then forgiveness
  40.      and then holiness is Christ's order and command.

  42. 2.   The Light of the World.  John 8:12-59.
  43.      This is significant because at the Feast of Tabernacles the
  44.      Temple was illuminated by a special ceremony.
  45.      He is the Light of the world to all repentant Sinners (like
  46.      the woman taken in adultery) but the Pharisees who refuse the
  47.      Light abide in darkness! Again Jesus said, "I am." Cf.  Ex.
  48.      3:14-15.  Jesus is from above, one with the Father. (v.14-
  49.      19)  Yet He declares that He is a witness and His Father is a
  50.      witness, showing the distinction in the persons of the Father
  51.      and the Son.  "The testimony of two ... is true ... I am one
  52.      that bear witness and the Father beareth witness."
  53.      (v.17-18).
  54.      Cf. 1 John 5:7-8, "And there are three that bear witness..."
  55.      salvation is by faith that Jesus is the "I Am". v.24--"If
  56.      ye believe not that I Am (He), ye shall die in your sins."
  57.      The Son of man is to be lifted up (on the cross), Through this
  58.      comes the revelation that He is the "I Am." (v.28).

  60.      Deliverance and freedom from sin promised by the Lord Jesus.
  61.      v.31-36.  Note in v.37-59, Abraham as a father, God as
  62.      Father, and the devil as father.  Who are the children?
  63.  
  64.      Eternal life is in the Word (v.51) and He is the great "I
  65.      Am" v.52-59.
  66.  
  67.      The Eternal Word is the Light of the World, the Forgiver of
  68.      Sin, and the Liberator from sin.
