The Gospel of John Lesson 6
Chapter 5. Bethesda.
1. The Healing of the Impotent Man. John 5:1-16.
Bethesda means the house of effusion, or of pity or mercy. The
Five Porches speak to us of the Five Wounds in the body of the Lord
Jesus, the Atonement.
The Lord Jesus has become our "Bethesda". His Five Wounds have
poured forth mercy in forgiveness and healing.
Jesus healed on the Sabbath. The Jews were angry because He had
opposed their religious system. They were more concerned about
keeping their traditions than receiving the reality of the power of
God in Christ. The same is true today. Sick people were waiting
for an angel to trouble the waters. Now the sick can come to the
Lord Jesus at all times because of His finished work on Calvary!
Note the connection between sin and sickness. v. 14 Cf.James 5:16,
"Sin no more." Holiness of life essential.
2. The Relationship of the Son with the Father. John 5:17-47.
(This discourse has its foundation in the miracle of v. 1-10)
a. The Witness of the Son. v. 17-31. - The oneness (unity) of
the Son with the Father.
(1) Perfect cooperation. v. 17-19.
The Son submissive, obedient.
(2) Perfect love. v. 20a.
(3) Perfect revelation. v. 20b.
(4) Perfect working unison in: v.21-30. - The result or outworking
of this oneness
a. Resurrection. v. 21,28-29.
b. Judgment. v. 22,27,30.
c. Worship. v. 23.
d. Impartation of life. v. 24-26
Compare v. 25 with Eph. 2:1,5; Col.2:13, 1 John 3:14.
Unsaved persons are dead in sin and need a resurrection to
life in Christ. Compare v. 28-29 with Dan. 12:2, Matt.
25:31-46; Rev. 20:4-6 with 1 Thess. 4:16-17 & 1 Cor. 15:23,
51-52; Rev.20: 12-15. Note that there are only two
resurrections,
(1) of the just at the beginning of the millennium and
(2) of the unjust at the end of the millennium.
b. Four other great witnesses concerning the Son of God. v.32-47.
Note Deut. 17:6, 19:15, 1 Tim. 5:19, Matt. 18:16, John 8:17-18,
2 Cor. 13:1. The perfection of testimony is by the mouth of
two or three witnesses.
(1) John the Baptist. v. 33-35.
As greater light comes from God we must receive it and
walk in it.
(2) The Works of the Lord Jesus. v. 36
Not of man but of the Father.
(3) The Father. v. 32, 37-38, Cf. Matt. 3:17, 17:5, John
12:28. Unbelief in the Son means unbelief in the Father.
v. 38.
(4) The Scriptures. v. 39-47.
Moses in Deut. 18:18-19. Cf. Luke 24:37.
The words of the Lord Jesus are on an equality with those
of God to Moses and bring a deeper revelation. v. 47.
The Eternal Word heals and then reveals His relationship with the
Father.
