  3. LAWS OF THE KINGDOM                        LECTURE 5.

  6. I. JESUS TEACHES ON CONDUCT  = our horizontal relationship.
  7.  
  8. And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying:
  9. 5.  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
  10. 7.  Blessed are the merciful:  for they shall obtain mercy.
  11. 9.  Blessed are the peacemakers:  for they shall be called
  12.     the children of God.  Matthew 5
  13.  
  14. Preamble.
  15.     Moving from a vertical relationship (that of man toward
  16.    God) we now find instruction in the horizontal
  17.    relationships of men toward his fellow man.  Here the
  18.    characteristics discussed develop out of a right attitude
  19.    toward God, which results in Kingdom conduct in daily
  20.    living.

  22.    Ps. 37:11-YIELDED TO WILL OF GOD, SUBMISSION, WILLING TO TAKE
  23.     THE LOW PLACE "HE THAT BE GREAT BE SERVANT OF ALL"

  25. A.  God Controlled (Gentle) Spirit : Mild Tempered:
  26.  
  27.     1. Has to do with how we act and react towards each
  28.    other.
  29.  
  30.     2. Meek?  Like the word mourn, this word has seldom been
  31.    accurately depicted in our society.  There is no "doormat"
  32.    or "milk-sop" inference here.  In fact, Jesus is teaching just
  33.    the opposite!  Not Gentle Jesus Meek and Mild:

  35.     3. Moses was described as a man of meekness.  He typified
  36.    strength and leadership.  He stood head and shoulders
  37.    above millions who looked to him for their very existence.
  38.    Yet, under undue pressure from the Israelites during their
  39.    desert trek, Moses blew his meekness.  Yes, meekness is
  40.    hard to come by-and even harder to maintain.

  43. B. The Compassionate Spirit: Kindness in action
  44.  
  45.     1. Merciful?  Here is expressed conduct that is more
  46.    easily understood by practical applications than words.
  47.    Mercy is not always easy to come by, either.  Often
  48.    Christians are very harsh and judgmental when another
  49.    Christian falls into sin. "You disgraced God you
  50.    ruined your testimony". God help us in this area of our
  51.    lives.

  54. C.  Binding Men Together Spirit : The Spirit of Wisdom
  55.  
  56.     1. Peacemakers?  The ability to bring a "quieting
  57.    influence" to others is, in essence, the result of this
  58.    manner of conducting oneself.  It isn't necessarily a
  59.    matter of words, though these may be involved at times.
  60.    It is rather, when you walk into a situation where the
  61.    sparks are flying and tempers are short- does the
  62.    situation where the sparks get better or worse?
  63.  
  64.     2. At the airport in Dallas, Texas, there is a statue of
  65.    a Texas Ranger, with the words (One Riot, One Ranger.)  It
  66.    commemorates the following event.  In response to an urgent
  67.    please, "Send us some men," one man appeared on the scene. The
  68.    reason for the call for help had been a big riot; yet when
  69.    this one ranger appeared (with two big .45s on his side,)
  70.    peace was restored.  One man walking into the middle of a
  71.    riot can have that effect-if the man comes rightly
  72.    prepared and armed.

  74.     3. WISDOM FROM ABOVE IS FIRST PEACEABLE. JAMES  3;17

  76. D. The Longsuffering and Forgiving Spirit: v. 10-12
  77.  
  78.      We will rate this Blessed are the Persecuted as the ninth
  79.      Beatitude. One must not fail to note that it is those who
  80.      are persecuted for rightousness' sake that are blessed. Some
  81.      are self-made martyrs and complain bitterly about their
  82.      being persecuted, when it is really their own foolishness.

  84.      NOTE: it is how you react that matters. 1.Pet 4:12-14
  85.      Not: I'LL  SUFFER IN SILENCE AS LONG AS PEOPLE KNOW IN
  86.      SUFFERING IN SILENCE.

  89. II. JESUS TEACHES ON INFLUENCE.  This is our relationship to
  90. the World.
  91.  
  92. And he opened his mouth, and taught them saying:
  93. 13. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost
  94.     his saver, wherewith shall it be salted?  It is
  95.     thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to
  96.     be trodden under foot of men.
  97. 14. Ye are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a
  98.     hill cannot be hid.
  99. 15. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel,
  100.     but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that
  101.     are in the house.
  102. 16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
  103.     your good works, and glorify your Father which is in
  104.     heaven.                              Matthew 5

  107. Preamble
  108.     Love the Lord your God = Vertical relationship
  109.     Love your neighbour    = Horizontal relationship
  110.  
  111.      We have straightened ourselves out on these points.  Now
  112.    What?  Outward Relationships. V.13-14 you are salt you are
  113.    light. It's Christ In You The Hope of The World.
  114.      The kingdom has to be established in you before it can
  115.    flow through you . Remember it's not what you say you are
  116.    but what you do.

  118. A.   Salt? What more common illustration could the Teacher
  119.    have chosen to underscore the importance of influence?
  120.    Everyone of His listeners could identify with this method
  121.    of seasoning and preserving foodstuffs.  Salt cannot
  122.    afford to lose its "saltiness".  Neither can words afford
  123.    to lose the backing of action.

  125.       Once the Kingdom of God has been established in a
  126.    person, it can flow through that person, and wherever he
  127.    walks-there is influence!  Salt is working.  What are
  128.    people looking at?  What are they looking for?  You are
  129.    not required to produce a lot of words.  Someone is
  130.    looking to see what kind of a job you are doing as you
  131.    lubricate his car.  In the home-with children and guests-
  132.    the milkman and the paperhanger- these are places where
  133.    salt can have its effect.

  135. B.   Light?  Just as salt was an absolute necessity for
  136.    preserving and seasoning food, so was the candle in
  137.    furnishing light in that day.  Jesus always spoke simply
  138.    and directly, and related His teachings to subjects his
  139.    hearers could understand.

  141.       Lights are made to be seen.  Along with a light
  142.    affording the means of illumination, there also comes an
  143.    opportunity to acknowledge the source of the light.  Jesus
  144.    says our good works are the means by which we can glorify
  145.    the Giver of light-our Father in heaven.  When men receive
  146.    benefit from our "good works," this is our opening to turn
  147.    the eyes of the recipient to God.

  149. C.   You are salt.  You are light.  You are influence.
  150.    That is why we all need to walk with openness and freedom
  151.    before the Lord.  People are looking at us and to us.
  152.       God is calling a people who will walk with their heads
  153.    in the clouds and their feet on the ground. This results
  154.    in a "stretching" experience.  It is offered by the
  155.    Teacher to each one who hears His words and puts them into
  156.    action.
