LAWS OF THE KINGDOM LECTURE 5.
I. JESUS TEACHES ON CONDUCT = our horizontal relationship.
And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying:
5. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
7. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
9. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called
the children of God. Matthew 5
Preamble.
Moving from a vertical relationship (that of man toward
God) we now find instruction in the horizontal
relationships of men toward his fellow man. Here the
characteristics discussed develop out of a right attitude
toward God, which results in Kingdom conduct in daily
living.
Ps. 37:11-YIELDED TO WILL OF GOD, SUBMISSION, WILLING TO TAKE
THE LOW PLACE "HE THAT BE GREAT BE SERVANT OF ALL"
A. God Controlled (Gentle) Spirit : Mild Tempered:
1. Has to do with how we act and react towards each
other.
2. Meek? Like the word mourn, this word has seldom been
accurately depicted in our society. There is no "doormat"
or "milk-sop" inference here. In fact, Jesus is teaching just
the opposite! Not Gentle Jesus Meek and Mild:
3. Moses was described as a man of meekness. He typified
strength and leadership. He stood head and shoulders
above millions who looked to him for their very existence.
Yet, under undue pressure from the Israelites during their
desert trek, Moses blew his meekness. Yes, meekness is
hard to come by-and even harder to maintain.
B. The Compassionate Spirit: Kindness in action
1. Merciful? Here is expressed conduct that is more
easily understood by practical applications than words.
Mercy is not always easy to come by, either. Often
Christians are very harsh and judgmental when another
Christian falls into sin. "You disgraced God you
ruined your testimony". God help us in this area of our
lives.
C. Binding Men Together Spirit : The Spirit of Wisdom
1. Peacemakers? The ability to bring a "quieting
influence" to others is, in essence, the result of this
manner of conducting oneself. It isn't necessarily a
matter of words, though these may be involved at times.
It is rather, when you walk into a situation where the
sparks are flying and tempers are short- does the
situation where the sparks get better or worse?
2. At the airport in Dallas, Texas, there is a statue of
a Texas Ranger, with the words (One Riot, One Ranger.) It
commemorates the following event. In response to an urgent
please, "Send us some men," one man appeared on the scene. The
reason for the call for help had been a big riot; yet when
this one ranger appeared (with two big .45s on his side,)
peace was restored. One man walking into the middle of a
riot can have that effect-if the man comes rightly
prepared and armed.
3. WISDOM FROM ABOVE IS FIRST PEACEABLE. JAMES 3;17
D. The Longsuffering and Forgiving Spirit: v. 10-12
We will rate this Blessed are the Persecuted as the ninth
Beatitude. One must not fail to note that it is those who
are persecuted for rightousness' sake that are blessed. Some
are self-made martyrs and complain bitterly about their
being persecuted, when it is really their own foolishness.
NOTE: it is how you react that matters. 1.Pet 4:12-14
Not: I'LL SUFFER IN SILENCE AS LONG AS PEOPLE KNOW IN
SUFFERING IN SILENCE.
II. JESUS TEACHES ON INFLUENCE. This is our relationship to
the World.
And he opened his mouth, and taught them saying:
13. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost
his saver, wherewith shall it be salted? It is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to
be trodden under foot of men.
14. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hid.
15. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel,
but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that
are in the house.
16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
your good works, and glorify your Father which is in
heaven. Matthew 5
Preamble
Love the Lord your God = Vertical relationship
Love your neighbour = Horizontal relationship
We have straightened ourselves out on these points. Now
What? Outward Relationships. V.13-14 you are salt you are
light. It's Christ In You The Hope of The World.
The kingdom has to be established in you before it can
flow through you . Remember it's not what you say you are
but what you do.
A. Salt? What more common illustration could the Teacher
have chosen to underscore the importance of influence?
Everyone of His listeners could identify with this method
of seasoning and preserving foodstuffs. Salt cannot
afford to lose its "saltiness". Neither can words afford
to lose the backing of action.
Once the Kingdom of God has been established in a
person, it can flow through that person, and wherever he
walks-there is influence! Salt is working. What are
people looking at? What are they looking for? You are
not required to produce a lot of words. Someone is
looking to see what kind of a job you are doing as you
lubricate his car. In the home-with children and guests-
the milkman and the paperhanger- these are places where
salt can have its effect.
B. Light? Just as salt was an absolute necessity for
preserving and seasoning food, so was the candle in
furnishing light in that day. Jesus always spoke simply
and directly, and related His teachings to subjects his
hearers could understand.
Lights are made to be seen. Along with a light
affording the means of illumination, there also comes an
opportunity to acknowledge the source of the light. Jesus
says our good works are the means by which we can glorify
the Giver of light-our Father in heaven. When men receive
benefit from our "good works," this is our opening to turn
the eyes of the recipient to God.
C. You are salt. You are light. You are influence.
That is why we all need to walk with openness and freedom
before the Lord. People are looking at us and to us.
God is calling a people who will walk with their heads
in the clouds and their feet on the ground. This results
in a "stretching" experience. It is offered by the
Teacher to each one who hears His words and puts them into
action.
