  10. An incomplete or unrecognized .PRS file can cause several
  11. problems.  These are three of the most common problems:
  12.  
  13.       *     Underlined text in your document does not print.
  14.       *     You are unable to mark or unmark soft fonts with * or +
  15.             when editing in the Select Printer screen.
  16.       *     Your document displays correctly, but does not print to
  17.             the length selected in Paper Size/Type.

  20. Concept
  21. Whenever you print a document, WordPerfect translates your
  22. document into commands that your printer can understand.  The
  23. translation information that your particular printer uses is
  24. stored in a file with a .PRS filename extension.  PRS is short
  25. for Printer Resource.  The .PRS file for each printer is either
  26. created when you install WordPerfect or when you select a printer
  27. from the Select Printer: Edit screen.
  28.  
  29. Each .PRS file defines the fonts, paper sizes, and other options
  30. available for the selected printer.  An incomplete or
  31. unrecognized .PRS file cannot supply this information to
  32. WordPerfect, which limits your printing capabilities.

  35. Solution
  36. You may need to rename and reselect the .PRS file, but first you
  37. need to eliminate other possible problems.  The suggestions in
  38. this checklist are the most common ways to pinpoint and correct
  39. the problem:
  40.  
  41.       *     Determine if the problem occurs in just one document or
  42.             in several.
  43.       *     Try to duplicate the problem in a new document.             
  44.       *     Check Initial Codes and Setup for unnecessary codes.
  45.       *     Delete Paper Size/Type codes, then define and select a
  46.             new Paper Size/Type.
  47.       *     If fonts are available, mark and unmark the correct
  48.             font (or deselect all fonts by pressing Home and * or
  49.             +).
  50.       *     Confirm that Font Quantity is correctly set.
  51.       *     Confirm that the .PRS filename matches the printer
  52.             name.
  53.       *     If you use a switch box, try printing without it.
  54.       *     If you are on a network, try printing directly to the
  55.             queue or printer.
  56.  
  57. If none of the suggestions above have corrected the problem, you
  58. need to rename and reselect the .PRS file for your printer. 
  59. First, you need to determine the name of the .PRS file.
  60.  
  61. 1     Press Print (Shift+F7), then choose Select Printer (S) to
  62.       display a list of printers that are available.
  63.  
  64. 2     Highlight the name of the printer for the .PRS filename you
  65.       want to identify.  Choose Edit (3).  
  66.  
  67. The .PRS filename is displayed at the top of the screen next to
  68. Filename.
  69.  
  70. 3     Press Exit (F7) three times to return to the document
  71.       editing screen.

  73. Now you need to rename the .PRS file.
  74.  
  75. 1     From a clear document screen, press List (F5).
  76.  
  77. 2     Type the path and directory where the .PRS files are stored. 
  78.       They will be in the default directory where WP.EXE is
  79.       stored, unless you have changed the directory in Location of
  80.       Files under the Setup menu.
  81.  
  82. 3     Highlight the .PRS file you want to rename, then choose
  83.       Move/Rename (3).
  84.  
  85. We suggest that you keep the same filename for the printer, but
  86. change the extension to reflect that this is the old .PRS
  87. filename.  Keeping the same filename will help you remember
  88. exactly which printer you have specified.

  90. 4     Change the .PRS file extension to .OLD. 
  91.  
  92. 5     Press Exit (F7) to return to the document editing screen.
  93.  
  94. The next step is to reselect the .PRS file.  It will first need
  95. to be recreated from the .ALL file.
  96.  
  97. 1     From a clear screen, press Print (Shift+F7), then choose
  98.       Select Printer (S).
  99.  
  100. 2     Choose Additional Printers (2). 
  101.  
  102. A list of printers you can select displays.  If your printer is
  103. not listed or if the message Printer Files not found, go to the
  104. Printer Files not found section below.
  105.  
  106. 3     Highlight the file you renamed above, then choose Select
  107.       (1).
  108.  
  109. 4     Press Exit (F7) until you return to the document editing
  110.       screen.

  112. Printer Files not found
  113. If your printer .ALL files are not found and you know which
  114. directory they are located in on your hard drive,  
  115.  
  116. 1     Choose Other Disk (2).
  117.  
  118. 2     Type the directory where your printer .ALL files are stored.
  119.  
  120. 3     Highlight the file you renamed above, then choose Select
  121.       (1).
  122.  
  123. 4     Press Exit (F7) until you return to the document editing
  124.       screen.
  125.  
  126. If  you do not have printer .ALL files on your hard drive, you
  127. will need to run the Install program and select a printer.
  128.  
  129. 1     Exit WordPerfect.
  130.  
  131. 2     At the C:\WP51 DOS prompt, type install and press Enter.
  132.  
  133. 3     Follow the prompts on screen.
  134.  
  135. When the Basic Install screen appears, 
  136.  
  137. 4     Choose Printer (4) to install a new or updated printer.  You
  138.       will be prompted for the necessary diskettes.
  139.  
  140. 5     Insert the diskette as prompted, and follow the rest of the
  141.       prompts through the Install program.
