Title: Screen Message: Other Copies Currently Running?
Product: WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
Number: 1025-8/93
Problem
When you try to start WordPerfect the message Are other copies of
WordPerfect currently running? is displayed on your screen and
WordPerfect does not start.
Concept
WordPerfect creates temporary files each time the program is
started, and the temporary files are deleted each time the
program is properly exited. However, if a power failure,
computer lockup, or improper exit occurs (such as turning off the
computer before exiting WordPerfect), the temporary files will
still exist the next time you start WordPerfect.
Timed Document Backup creates temporary files which are deleted
when you properly exit WordPerfect. If the computer is turned
off before you press Exit (F7), the temporary files remain in
your WordPerfect directory. The next time you start WordPerfect,
the message Are other copies of WordPerfect currently running?
displays. If you choose Yes at this prompt, you must specify the
directory where the new temporary files can be created. You are
then given the choice to Rename or Delete the existing backup
files. If you select Rename, you must enter a new name for the
backup file, and WordPerfect will then prop erly back up the file
currently on the screen. You must rename the file if you want to
retrieve it. If you don't give it a new name, the file is
deleted. If you select Delete, WordPerfect will still properly
back up the file currently on the screen, but the old backup
files will be erased.
Answering No to the prompt will take you directly to WordPerfect,
but the temporary backup files will be automatically deleted.
Solution
You need to turn Timed Document Backup on. If it is not turned
on, your work will not be saved if there is a power failure.
1 Press Setup (Shift+F1), then choose Environment (3), Backup
Options (1), and Timed Document Backup (1).
2 Choose Yes to turn on Timed Document Backup, then enter the
desired Minutes Between Backups.
3 Press Exit (F7) to return to your document screen.
