Title: Printing: Overprinting Caused by Text Adjustment
Product: WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
Number: 1028-10/93
Problem
As you print a document, you notice that several lines of text
print over another line on the page.
Concept
Printing several lines of text on a page over another line is
called overprinting. Overprinting occurs when the position of
text is adjusted higher than the top of the page. Overprinting
does not occur with every printer■only printers that print text
line by line (line printers) create this problem.
Printing begins on a page at the margins selected for the top and
left side of the page. Text Adjustment moves text on a page
relative to the top or left margin. When you select a distance
for Text Adjustment Up that is greater than the top margin, line
printers follow the text adjustment. As a result, several lines
are printed over the first line of the page.
For example, if you select a top margin of .5" and the selected
text adjustment remained Up 1", printing would begin half an inch
above the top of the page. Half an inch of text, or three lines,
would overprint.
If you use a daisy wheel printer, the default text adjustment for
the 8.5" x 11" paper size is 1". When you use a daisy wheel
printer and select a margin less than 1" without modifying the
text adjustment, the first few lines of your document will
overprint.
For many other line printers, paper sizes selected from the [ALL
Others] category on the Format: Paper Size/Type screen include a
default 1" text adjustment from the top margin. Any time you
choose a paper size from the (ALL Others) category and select a
margin less than 1", you should modify Text Adjustment.
Solution
Modify Text Adjustment if you have selected a margin of less than
1".
1 Press Format (Shift+F8), then choose Page (2), and Paper
Size (7) to display the paper sizes and types available
using your printer.
2 Highlight the paper size you want to use, then choose Edit
(5).
3 Choose Text Adjustment (9), then choose Up (1) to choose up
as the direction of adjustment.
4 Enter a distance less than the top margin of the page.
5 Press Exit (F7) until you return to the document editing
screen.
