Me too... unfortunately, I'm an flying-addict. If I fly a little I gotta fly
a whole bunch. [Saturday touch-and-go's and short cross-countries don't do it]
so I'm "on the wagon" (and off the airplane?) otherwise I'll be bankrupt!

Your symptoms are definitely those of a missing sample/hold amplifier. I
was building a data logger using a 12-bit, 70 kHZ ADC (back in '82 when 12-bit
A/D was hard to do cheaply) and I was having severe noise problems. I was
getting only 8 of the 12 bits reliably. I sent the ADC back with a complaint
(it was a $135 hybrid module). They couldn't find anything wrong but sent me
a new one anyway. It failed too.
That caused me to look at my design more closely, and I found that I had
omitted the sample/hold capacitor (the app note made it look optional). I
put the cap in, and I had 12 bits of A/D again. How embarrassing. :-(
If the ADC doesn't have sample/hold, and you can put in one that does, by
all means do so. I wouldn't trust an ADC at anything close to the Nyquist
limit for your input data without sample/hold.

Ok, now, lets try that again, this time with the NEW version:

There, thats much better. (Thats me, in case you did not
notice the similarity :-).
Ok, so now the question is - how many people want this
little example of how not to code in C++? And how
should I distribute it? EMAIL!!! please, and I'll
summarize and make a decision.
Again EMAIL!!! thanks.

Subject: a program for the callsign project
Well, just for kicks I wrote a (pretty awful, structurally
speaking) C++ program to take the 46 meg file from the
'callsign project' and do a binary search of it for a
callsign.
Whats so great about that? Well, first its my first C++ program.
Second, the callsigns are no longer in the split strange-o
format but rather back into N7IKQ (rather than '7IKQ N' format)
form, but they are sorted as though they were stored in the
split format.
Thirdly, (?) the records are all variable-length.
Here is the output from it after running it to find
2 'random' :-) callsigns:

Oh, dear, I found a bug! Well, back to the drawing board.
In any case, its really rather quick at finding things, and
I'd be willing to post it to a sources group somewhere, but
how many people have a c++ compiler? (I can also run the C++
preprocessor on it and post that, as well, which is valid 'c'
code and should be able to be sent off to a 'normal' c compiler).
(I won't post it until its fixed, though! :-).

Because of a disk space crunch, all of the older mail files in several
of the larger mail archives on SIMTEL20, including INFO-HAMS, have
been taken off-line until additional disk drives are procured and
installed. At that time, no earlier than January, all the mail
archives will be restored.

Yeah, Phil, I agree...
In reference to renewals and grace periods:
License Terms (copied from p. 4-6 of the 8th edition)
"Licenses are normally good for ten years. If you have a license good
for the old five-year term, a grace period of five years is allowed should
you forget to renew. After two years of the grace period has passed, you
will lose your call sign and will be assigned a new one.
"If you have a new 10-year-term license, issued since January 1984, the
grace period for reinstatement is two years.
"If you apply for reinstatement of your license under the grace period,
you may not operate your station until your reinstated ticket arrives."
Thus spake the ARRL "FCC Rule Book" staff...

Yup, I've seen the ad, too. Looks pretty neat. I wonder what kind of range
the thing has. It may come in hand for survielance work (if you could disguise
the tx unit).

Subject: Schematics needed - novice rig
I've unearthed what appears to be a good loaner rig for a new
novice here, but don't have schematics for it so I can repair
it easily. It's a CONAR model 500 receiver and model 400
transmitter. I believe these were sold as part of a ham radio
training course by National Radio Institute, Washington, DC.
Both tube-type, of course, and pretty simple. I'm hoping to
get the manuals to loan out also. If you have copies of one
or both manuals, or just a schematic, please send me an email
message so we can work out a way for me to obtain a copy.
Thanks!
