  70. Your symptoms are definitely those of a missing sample/hold amplifier.  I
  71. was building a data logger using a 12-bit, 70 kHZ ADC (back in '82 when 12-bit
  72. A/D was hard to do cheaply) and I was having severe noise problems.  I was 
  73. getting only 8 of the 12 bits reliably.  I sent the ADC back with a complaint 
  74. (it was a $135 hybrid module).  They couldn't find anything wrong but sent me
  75. a new one anyway.  It failed too.

  77. That caused me to look at my design more closely, and I found that I had
  78. omitted the sample/hold capacitor (the app note made it look optional).  I
  79. put the cap in, and I had 12 bits of A/D again.  How embarrassing.  :-(

  81. If the ADC doesn't have sample/hold, and you can put in one that does, by
  82. all means do so.  I wouldn't trust an ADC at anything close to the Nyquist 
  83. limit for your input data without sample/hold.

  152. Well, just for kicks I wrote a (pretty awful, structurally
  153. speaking) C++ program to take the 46 meg file from the
  154. 'callsign project' and do a binary search of it for a
  155. callsign.

  157. Whats so great about that?  Well, first its my first C++ program.
  158.  
  159. Second, the callsigns are no longer in the split strange-o
  160. format but rather back into N7IKQ (rather than '7IKQ   N' format)
  161. form, but they are sorted as though they were stored in the
  162. split format.

  164. Thirdly, (?) the records are all variable-length.

  191. In any case, its really rather quick at finding things, and 
  192. I'd be willing to post it to a sources group somewhere, but 
  193. how many people have a c++ compiler?  (I can also run the C++
  194. preprocessor on it and post that, as well, which is valid 'c'
  195. code and should be able to be sent off to a 'normal' c compiler).

  242. only updated their data once a month to the NTIS...

  260. of the larger mail archives on SIMTEL20, including INFO-HAMS, have
  261. been taken off-line until additional disk drives are procured and

  335. I've unearthed what appears to be a good loaner rig for a new
  336. novice here, but don't have schematics for it so I can repair
  337. it easily.  It's a CONAR model 500 receiver and model 400
  338. transmitter.  I believe these were sold as part of a ham radio
  339. training course by National Radio Institute, Washington, DC.
  340. Both tube-type, of course, and pretty simple.  I'm hoping to 
  341. get the manuals to loan out also.  If you have copies of one
  342. or both manuals, or just a schematic, please send me an email
  343. message so we can work out a way for me to obtain a copy.
