Then he has not been on any flight I have ever been on because he would
get a big hassle from me real quick.

Of course there is the problems he will be causing by accessing many
multitudes of cells concurrently, but I don't care about that.

What I do care about is an aircraft being mislead into the wrong airspace,
not being able to see another airborne object, etc., and possibly being one
of the very low statistics of airplane accidents.

I've taken my handheld with me on every trip (business as well as
pleasure) in the US, plus a couple of international trips.  I've
never had any problem or hassle.  This includes one trip through
LaGuardia airport, so I suspect that the bad experience reported
earlier was just one guard having an obnoxious day.  The radio
comes in the carry-on baggage.  Usually it passes through the
X-ray without comment.  About 20% of the time it is looked at.
Sometimes I'm even asked what it is.  (The answer: "a radio".)
On a single occasion I was asked to demonstrate that it was a
working radio, so I just turned the squelch back and turned on
the power.  "Hisss......" -- that was all it took.

By the way, I don't think it makes sense to ask for permission.
You don't NEED permission, any more than you need permission to
carry on a toothbrush.  However, by asking, you're inviting the
askee to say NO.  Often they will, since that's the easiest answer.
By not asking, you're not exposing anyone to the temptation to
say no.

Subject: How do I get started?

What's a good way to get started in amateur radio?   Can anyone recommend
books or magazines that might be helpful?  What would I be getting myself
into (time, money, etc)?  Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Subject: IC-32AT <--> Kamtronics KAMII

Could someone please pass me/send me some information regarding connection
of an ICOM HT (ICOM 02-AT and 32-AT have the same mic input I believe) to
a Kamtronics KamII TNC 2 compatible?  I know the pins that come out of
the Kamtronics and am having a bug of a time building a cable
to interface the two (combining the PTT and MIC input).  Some people
to tell me to use a 10K resistor from the PTT and a .01 Millifarad capacitor
on the Mic line from the TNC and run them into the HT, others tell me no
capacitor is necessary but I need a 22K resistor.

Could someone please tell me what THEY HAVE WORKING?  I may have
something goofed up but I'm sure I'd have hit it one of these times....

Yeah, but don't you have to take the test after 5 years? I had a guy walk
in to our VE session who had his call back in 1948. He'd love to get his
old call back, ((PERSONAL OPINION: HE SHOULD GET IT!)) but it's been too
long!

I suppose I might be willing to pay in the order of low hundreds for a CHOSEN
call sign.  However it would have to be very little payment to actually search
for its availability.

Call signs should be restricted to match license class OR LOWER (i.e. if an
Extra decides he wants his old Novice call back, he would be allowed to have
it unless it has be reassigned).

Also, the same system could open up the 1x1 calls (yes, they really are
allocated to Amateur Radio in Part 2 of the FCC rules) for things like
special event stations.

My gut level reaction is that this letter is probably bogus.  I don't
believe that the FCC would write such a letter.  It seemed to be heavily
slanted toward one side's arguments in this particular dispute.

I will be interested in finding out if it is bona fide or not.

Subject: Looking for Zenith TV part

I realize this is not related to ham radio but I believe that a person
having the answer to this quesiton probably reads this group since
many hams are "hardware hackers".

I'm fixing a TV to repay a favor to a friend of mine who lugged
the contents of my old house upstairs to our present home.

Here goes...

I'm looking for a voltage dependant resistor (VDR) for a Zenith 19DC22
Chassis.

The part is about the diameter of a nickel, about 3/16 inch thick and
looks much like a thermistor would.  It's coated with red epoxy.
I do not have the Zenith part number.  The part failed by arcing across
the body and blew out the tripler with it.

The component connects in series with a focus voltage tap coming from
the high voltage tripler.  It is mounted on a terminal strip behind the
flyback transformer.  It apparantely is used to automatically adjust
brightness of the raster with high voltage fluctuations.  The low voltage
side of the component connects to the brightness limiter potentiometer,
with another series resistor and zener diode connecting to ground for the
voltage ref. of the control.

I have tried talking to two Zenith dealers in the area and they are no
help (the set is about 15 to 20 years old).

Any help on the net I can obtain in either getting the part, finding a
source for the part, or its part number would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, that's the truth, unless you are controlling the repeater by
another legal means.  In particular, there must be ANOTHER
control op (or the same control op with simultaneous access to
separate legal means of control).

The legal means of control can be either a control link on
another band, at or above 220 MHz, or it can be a phone line,
obviously separate from the line that the patch is on.  Note that
"Automatic Control" of a repeater is not good enough.  When the
repeater is doing a phone patch it isn't in repeater service,
it's in auxiliary service.  And there is no such thing as
"Automatic Control" for auxiliary service.

Very few clubs actually do this, of course.  It costs money to have
two phone lines, for example.  But that's what it takes to really
be legal.  The club I was most recently active in does it
legally.  A call to the control phone can be used to dump the
current patch on the patch phone.

The best reception of FAX I have seen that uses a dot matrix printer is with
the InfoTech (DES) M-800v2 (which I have).  Universal Shortwave now sells a
unit called the M-900 which combines (I think) RTTY/CW/?/FAX into one small
unit.  The FAX goes to the printer.  For FAX reception, it has the ability to
responde to the START/STOP tones, set frames of 576 or 288 IOCs, speeds of
60, 90, 120, and 240 lpm, can do black/white OR 16-shade gray-scale, print
the image Right-Left (normal) or Left-Right (like a photo negative), and
can either print in a POSITIVE mode or a NEGATIVE mode (which photo negatives
are sent in, and which comes in handy for manipulating clarty of weak or
noise images).  It has BOTH and AM (for FM broadcasting satellites), and
FM (for shortwave FAX stations that very the audio frequency) demodulators.
In short, it carries the tuning of a FAX signal to the hilt and generates
a beautiful representation on my epson-clone 24-pin printer (does a great
job on a 9-pin too).

I don't work for Universal.  I just really love the unit.  I believe it
sells for $250-$400 now (not certain).  It is a standalone unit, now computer
or program needed.  Just mu $.025 worth.

They do.  In every area I've ever had my cellphone in, both carriers take
911 calls regardless of the calling unit's status.

It's easy.  You tell the 911 operator where you are and she/he routes it
appropriately.

I avoid autopatches and use the cellphone for emergencies because:

It works every time.
The signal quality is almost always good
The channel is full duplex.
I don't have to worry about intermod or some idiotic geezer who transmits
  before listening comming in and wiping out my comments.
I don't have to play 40-questions with all the lurkers after I finish.

Subject: TS440 Blank Display

A friend of mine (Doug - VE3BGK) has a strange problem with his TS440.
Seems that sometimes, when the frequency is between 14Mhz and 22Mhz, the
display blanks out showing only a string of dots.  The receiver goes dead
when this happens.  If he retunes back below the cutout frequency the
display comes back but the receiver still acts dead.  Doesn't seem to matter
whether it's warm or cold.  Sounds like the PLL is flakey to me.
He's tried reseating connectors, resetting the CPU, etc.

Anyone seen this before?
