Subject: Antique Radio Classified
Since there have been some postings recently seeking sources for antique
or even just slightly-old electronic parts and equipment, I thought it
would be worthwhile to post a pointer to a major info resource in this
area -- a monthly small-format publication that carries ads from individuals
and companies involved in this field:

They will send a free sample upon request. If you circle the number for
their ad in CQ or PopComm, all they send is a postcard with the rates
and a note to send it back for the free sample. Since that will cost
25 cents to put it in an envelope, you are better off forgetting the
bingo-card number and sending a 15 cent postcard directly.
Subscription rates are $11 for a 6-month trial (mailed 2nd class, US only);
$20 for 12 months 2nd class; $30 for 12 months 1st class mail (US & Mexico).
Canadian rates are $14, $27, and $32 (air mail) respectively, in US funds.
I am not really too deeply involved in this, so I don't have a
subscription. I have gotten a free sample in the past, and it looks like
a well-put-together publication. It has better production quality than
many other such special-interest limited-circulation periodicals I've
seen over the years.
Not only would this be a source of vendors for equipment and parts, and
a way to buy and sell older electronics between individuals, but it also
will provide pointers to local or regional clubs, associations, and swap
meets devoted to this field.

Great care should be taken in posting these announcements. Please look
at the time/date and request further information before posting. AO-13
is back in good shape and I have worked several stations on it in the
past week. I copied great telemetry with my DSP based modem within a
couple of hours of rebooting/reloading. We are having an internal
dispute as to whether SEU's in the CPU microprocessor registers or a
software is causing the trouble (we have seen some extremely violent
magnetic storms recently and thus the confusion). I wish to repeat here
for those interested in getting on AO-13, that the problems that occurred
on AO-10 should not reoccur on AO-13 as AMSAT-NA had donated tens of
thousands of dollars worth of Harris RAD hard memory left over from some
DOD contract that are flying in AO-13. We all expect AO-13 to live and
function well for 10 years. Major successes have been reported recently
on the secondary experiments with Mode S finally becoming fully operational.
The Germans have partially recovered RUDAK and are working hard to
get a decent piece of software into the memory in that experiment. AO-13
got into its final design orbit so closely that you would proud of it
if you were NASA or Arianespace. Ao-13 is NOT in distress and is functioning
wonderfully.

The 1989 New Jersey Traffic Handlers Confab will be held at Rutgers
University on Saturday, December 2 from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M.
All are welcome to attend.
It will be at the Busch Campus Center in Piscataway, New Jersey in
room 120.
This is the annual meeting where those involved in New Jersey traffic
handling talk about what has been done and make plans for the future.
Anyone interested in traffic handling shouldn't miss it.

There has been some discussion in the last few years regarding health
hazards of Amateur Radio. In these discussions, the topic of mental health
has been, in our opinion, sadly overlooked. This is about to change.
This coming Friday, November 3, at 7:30 (or so) EST, we will once
again be putting our commemerative station on the air. Celebrating the
82nd anniversary of the Cremation Of Sam McGee will be radio station
W8VR, crewed by the old team of W8VR, WB8FPQ, N8BKF, KT8Y and KE8YY.
Work us, send a QSL card and receive a handsome, two-tone 8-1/2"x11"
certificate suitable for framing, signed by the participants and imprinted
with genuine ash from the cremation of Sam McGee. Would we lie to you?
Where will you find us? On all Real Ham Bands: 160, 80, 40, 20 & 10.
Most likely on the low end of 80 (clear of the DX window) and on 20,
clear of the contesters.
Hopefully this season's special events station will be as successful as
the last four, except this time we'll try to remember that you use LSB
on 80.

The last time I noticed this rule, just BEFORE the recent
re-organization of the rules, the situation was:
You have a five year grace period to get your ticket back, but
only a one (or was it two) year period to keep the old call.
Sorry to be vague. I was hoping someone would quote it from the
new rulebook, but nobody has.
And on re-using calls and picking your own call: All these rules
and procedures have changed many times over the years. I got my
current "initials" call in 1976 when it was briefly possible to
pick your own if you were licensed long enough as an Extra. I
was first licensed in 1957 as WN2TOX, then W2TOX, and I was at
least the third holder of W2TOX. I was probably the second
(maybe third) holder of W9FUB and the first holder of K1YKB and
WR1AKJ. I held A2TOX as a MARS call, before A2 became Botswana.

Subject: Third Party Traffic, MM net and BARF get letters from FCC
KB3YV claims that phone patches which evade toll charges may be illegal
because of "restraint of trade".
One of the interesting developments in telecommunications in the past
few years has been the emergence of "bypass networks". One way that
this can work is.....suppose your company has several locations around
a large metropolitan area that are long distance from each other. If
telephone traffic ever gets large enough to give you the economic incetive,
you may choose to route your phone traffic between your offices over
some private network (microwave, T-carrier, leased lines, etc) rather
than paying toll charges to the phone company.
This is NOT illegal!
Likewise, I think it's funny when hams cite some non-existant law to
prevent ham autopatches from "byapssing" the local toll network.
The club I belong to still prevents this, due to some vague fear that
the local phone company wouldn't like it. My response is, if US West
ever did anything retalitory because of this, the state utility
commission should hear about it. If Boeing Company can bypass and
connect to the local telephone network, why can't hams?

Subject: Transistor Trivia
The first commercial transistor was, without a doubt (IMHO)
made by Regency. It's sensitivity was such that it could
pick up the more powerful local stations most of the time.
It used a 22.5 volt battery. Hit the market ca. 1957, and cost
about $55.

I always use an SASE when I want a card back. My success rate with US
stations is pretty high, but not 100% (I'm still waiting for a Utah card on
20 for my 5BWAS, and KH6 on 80, for example). I just got a return card in
the mail yesterday, with my SASE returned to me. I was pleasantly
surprised, to say the least.
