Dear .<NICKNAME>:
This letter is an example of most of the options available to you
with Mail Merge in PC-TYPE+. The text helps explain what is going on
so you can learn more about using Mail Merge as you work with it.
With this letter you will be working with a comma delimited (WORDSTAR
type) data file called TEST.WS. It was provided on your PC-TYPE+ HELP
disk. For things to work properly, you need to be sure the correct
drive, path and file name are specified in the Mail Merge definition
at the beginning of this file.
You will also notice that the Mail Merge Definition for this file
actually defines each variable name. The variable names must be
listed in the exact order in which the data appears in your comma
delimited data file.
.FORCE is used for the variable DEADLINE. The handy thing about using
the .FORCE command is that you can place items like deadline dates,
key terms or names in contracts and agreements in one easy to find
place.
The date and time will be automatically "plugged in" for you each time
you do this letter. PC-TYPE+ will pick up both of those from what is
set on your system. If you don't have a clock calendar on your PC
you will need to set the date and time at the DOS prompt before
getting started.
The GROUP and EGROUP commands take care of eliminating extra lines
in an address. This is nice when a record in your database doesn't
have a COMPANY or key person. The letter won't look like something
is missing.
For those points in letters or documents where you want to vary things
a bit or need built-in flexibility, you can use the KEYIN command.
This causes PC-TYPE+ to stop and wait for you to enter something at
the keyboard. This paragraph ends with a KEYIN, allowing you to type
anything you want (with the paragraph reformatted, too) starting right
HERE:-> .<KEYIN*>P>.
.INCLUDE A:\PCT_HELP\INCLUDE.1
After you get a chance to work with the Mail Merge features of
PC-TYPE+, you'll wonder how you ever got along without them.
Please note that even though this paragraph includes a variable which
might go beyond the length of the line, the key letter "P" at the end
of the variable will cause the entire paragraph to be reformatted.
You should make it a point to learn as much as you can about using the
Mail Merge features of PC-TYPE+ .<DEADLINE>P>.
So go ahead and experiment - play around to get an idea of how all
of this works with a comma delimited format. The more you work with
it the more you will discover just how much more you will be able to
do with Mail Merge.
All the best,
