- <f1><c000>Reservoir Gods releases overview
- <f0> by Saulot/Chosneck Team 'December 2002
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Since very first official public appearance of Chosneck (oh my! it's year now!)
- many things have changed and numerous hot releases we have missed. We want to
- apologize and partly fill up the existing hole with warm words and good
- intentions. Indeed, we are really good ladz. ;) The movement in the games
- department was very big in the second half of the year. For the very large part
- of this gaming mayhem there could be only one responsible party - Reservoir
- Gods. After years of silence they still amaze us with quality productions. Now
- only main() GOD knows what they are preparing for us in the deepest dungeons of
- their headquarters. From the circulating rumours, we know about many projects
- that are currently in the pipeline. Among the sea of possible things we can
- expect to see in the future are the Faery Land project h anded out to RG by
- members of Dune and also something of Dreamcast origin. The rest are tightly
- guarded secrets, so I will not speculate about this - the future will tell.
-
- There is more good news concerning the RG crew. The Gods of Reservoir are
- getting BIGGER! Several new members joined the clan: Griff of Electronic
- Images, Aegir, Stratagem and Neo. The short time between releases proved that
- there is good team spirit and injection of fresh blood speeded up the games
- development process dramatically. I could only be jealous for such a motivated
- team.
-
- Mr.Pink finally updated and revamped the RG website. Changes in everything -
- changed server, domain name. At last you can download all the games that RG
- released through the years (no more tears!) and some utilities. Finally you can
- compare your efforts and dedication in playing GodPey and Superfly. By sending
- savegame files from these games to Mr.Pink, your Highscore will be exposed to
- public view on the RG website. Only this One-Only-and-Final-Oracle will tell
- you that you are good enough or that you should seek happiness somewhere else
- ;)
-
- I wish all the beST to the GODS - many high quality releases in the next year.
- Keep up the team spirit! To prove that we in Chosneck care a lot and we are not
- stone-hearted scum suckers I want to delve deep into the sick and inhuman
- alternate reality of "godly" games.
-
- Chu-Chu rocket was the very beginning of all of this gaming disaster. With this
- title, all the spotlights were directed toward RG, because after years of
- silence, once again they emerged in all the glory with a smash-hit. There was
- some interest from PC world. The comments were also inevitable - positive and
- negative ones. A lot of ecstatic reviews but also numerous accusations for
- hiding software piracy under the emulation label occurred. How do we explain
- to those PC assholes that these games are written especially for Atari hardware
- and aren't meant to break any copyright laws. They cannot compute in their
- narrow minds that games for Atari are mainly made for the fun of creating, for
- sport, to exploit hardware possibilities. Not for millions of sold copies, not
- for profits (but I don't think that cash is not helpful at all or not
- motivating ;]). All I consider is that those PC people are bored to death by
- constant releases for their platform, are software flooded and cannot
- experience the happiness even from the smallest things. I bet that the guys
- that started this war are suffering from complex of small Ryszard (Ryszard its
- a very cool name in polish, which in English means simply Dick :-]]] ). No-one
- is listening to them, so they are tormenting the only one guilty party,
- responsible for all the most devious, immoral acts in the world - active
- Atarians (very rare specimen). I will not write big FUCK OFF to them, because I
- don't think that they are reading Falcon030 HardDiskMags hieee, hieee! No-one
- complains about Dyna Blaster, Arkanoid or Pong clones, they had to choose poor
- Chu-Chu. Never mind that all of the graphics, music and code was made from the
- beginning. There is only one solution for those dumb, critical individuals
- - burn at the stake! As my first intention is to write something about Chu-Chu
- Rocket, not to carry out a witch-hunt, I finish for good all of these awful
- personal excursions to spare you eventual torments.
-
- Chu-Chu Rocket
- --------------
- The main idea of the game is very simple, but fiendishly addictive. The player
- guides his mice(chus) into his rockets. The chus move in special manner
- (simply speaking they go in the opposite direction that you want ;)). The
- player (should be named director) leaves the arrows with directions on the
- floor. On the way to the rocket there are several kinds of obstacles: walls
- which change direction of chu's movement, holes (chu's fall in to never be seen
- again) and kapu's (very cute and hungry cats which will eat your chu's in every
- occasion. Try to let such a kapu into the rocket, not especially yours...).
-
- The very strong point of this game is it's multiplayer modes. Up to four
- players can take part using various controls: the more traditional keyboard,
- mouse and joystick, the little less traditional jagpads and very exotic ones
- like team taps (a device that, as far I know, lets you connecting additional
- joysticks to your ST - very useful for ending good, old friendships in Dyna
- Blaster or it's clone Dyna Busters+).
-
- There are two modes of multiplayer game. In the 4p battle mode, all the players
- are set against each other. If you don't have enough friends, the computer can
- simulate them for you. The rest is easy: you must guide chu's to your rocket
- and make a lot of awful things happen to your opponents, such as: stealing
- chu's from them or even directing them into holes, guiding kapu's into their
- rockets (the result will be a drastic loss of chu's population in a given
- rocket) etc. The winner is he who gathers the greatest number of chu's into his
- rocket. Additionally there are two extra kinds of chu's: the gold one (worth 50
- normal chus) and purple one (which triggers and distributes random, disastrous
- events onto your opponents). You will need wits and lightning fast reflexes to
- eliminate your opponents. For me - mass murder (poor little chus :/). Yes, yes!
- You have noticed the tear in my eye, Saulot is an ordinary human and can be
- merciful sometimes, you know? The second multiplayer mode allows four players
- to split up into two teams. Each team is set against each other and herds as
- many chu's as possible to their rockets. The details of this 2 vs 2 battle are
- the same for 4p battle. If you don't like multiplayer modes then there are
- three choices left: quit, choose puzzle mode or stage challenge. I will not
- describe the first choice, because everyone knows what is all about. The puzzle
- mode, in comparison to earlier described playmodes, is for thinkers,
- philosophers and the similar lot. The player is presented with a ready made set
- of screens with differently arranged obstacles. The main objective is as usual:
- guide chus to the rocket, but this time we have a limited amount of arrows and
- we arrange them on screen to meet the main objective. It looks like this: you
- choose the screen from the available set where you see all the obstacles, your
- rocket and chus starting point. On a completely static screen, you set up the
- arrows and after everything is ready you push everything into motion with one
- button. Something went wrong? Restart, restart, restart... After completing one
- set of stages (a level), the next set is unlocked. And so on. Anyone who
- finishes all puzzle levels is rewarded with a so called secret bonus.
-
- The stage challenge mode is similar, but here you must complete the stages in a
- different way. Three secs to take a look at screen before everything starts
- moving isn't much, so it's better to be quick than dead. You don't have a
- limited set of arrows and you are able to place three different arrows at one
- time like in 4p battle mode. There is the possibility (and it is even
- recommended) to join forces with another player. Of course in the end the bonus
- awaits.
-
- Double Juggle Vegetabobble
- --------------------------
- This kind of game I call simply "play-and-forget". Corresponding to the readme
- file it was coded in 24 hours during a Special Easter RG Gathering. You command
- an Arnold Schwarzenegger like ;) individual and you struggle to keep all the
- flying balls in the air. No fireworks this time, no sophisticated controls -
- only left and right. The overall concept of the game is based on a small,
- pocket, black&white electronic game. For me a total waste of time and energy,
- but if someone likes it then ok... Only for people with erm... balls. By the
- way, how do you expect more from a juggling simulator ;)? As far I remember
- Easter was some kind of good season for juggling, don't you think? There was
- some other juggling sim. Naah, skip it... The only light in this production I
- see is in the intro-story.
-
- Godpey
- ------
- The peak of gaming mayhem which eventually consumed everyone: children, elders,
- nerds, pregnant women, boys and girls. Even the whole demoscene wasn't spared.
- All that were dragged into this unhealthy addiction were only interested in
- gaining experience points, getting the higher and higher scores, etc. That
- could explain the lack of other releases ;]. My STE was taken over for several
- days by my girlfriend, who normally wouldn't touch any computer at all, even
- with a long stick. I think that I recommended it enough.
-
- Godpey is a conversion of a Gunpey from the Wonderswan console. The basic
- principle is that you are presented with a grid of 5 columns and 10 rows. You
- control the cursor which occupies two vertical cells of the grid. On the bottom
- of the grid the fragments of line show up and the whole grid scrolls one row at
- time. The task of the player is to arrange fragments that appear into a
- horizontal line. If everything was done correctly, the whole line will
- disappear, increasing your score. The more twisted the line is, the more points
- you receive. Additional bonus is added for clearing the whole grid from
- unwanted line elements.
-
- There are nine levels of experience. By gaining experience not only new
- playmodes are unlocked, but also special features like jukebox or additional
- characters (which tell you with their current face expressione how your
- accomplishments are). Each level is named from a vegetable your character is
- adorned with. If you remember the slogan promoting this game "Wear it on your
- head" then you should know what I'm talking about.
-
- There are several game modes:
- Practice -Here you can train to natural death, without the pain that you can
- loose.
-
- Normal -Nearly everything is as it is in practice, but here you can be beaten.
- The scrolling of the grid gets faster during play.
-
- Stage -The game is divided into stages. To complete each stage you have to
- clear a given number of lines.
-
- Time -You have to clear as many lines as you can before the end of the
- countdown.
-
- Puzzle -Here you can sit down, relax, get something to drink. amd think for a
- while. The grid doesn't move at all and you have only to assemble a single line
- from all the given elements.
-
- Story -Is a mix of all playmodes mentioned above, but your main enemy is your
- grey box (in most cases ;]). Before each stage you are presented with some
- vegetable robbers and a story behind it. Great stuff, but I have to question if
- someone has managed to finish all this stuff?
-
- Most of the playmodes are available for 1&2 players (without practice and story
- mode). So, as you see, pure fun! Excellent gameplay, graphics, sfx and music.
-
- Super Fly
- ---------
- In a very short time, the author of this text was forced to gain a submarine
- driving (maybe diving?) licence. To this moment I cannot get rid of this nervous
- thumbnail tick syndrome (thatÆs from pressing SPACE). Erm, should I call a
- doctor?
-
- Super Fly is a really nerve-wrecking experience (especially for me). The idea,
- as usual, is very simple. You have your vehicle (submarine at good start) and
- you are head to the right side of the screen into something similar to a tunnel
- and constantly avoid obstacles. The tunnel sometimes gets wider or narrower.
- All those nasty obstacles are randomly generated, so each time the feeling of
- a wild ride is very unique. There is only one control: SPACE or another FIRE.
- By pressing space or a fire button, you turn on your engines and your vehicle
- goes up. If you don't hold it you simply lose speed and you go down. (very
- strong underwater gravity?). There are several gaming modes.
-
- At the very start only one is available. During play you gain experience and
- subsequent stages are activated. The game contains several bonuses like jukebox
- with all the Msg tunes from the game, picture gallery (containing some
- unreleased screens and gfx) and additional options. They are unlocked after
- getting a fixed number of experience points or if player fills the 10 entries
- in the highscore table of the given stage with his own scores (the pictures in
- the gallery).
-
- When I played a couple of games I thought that the number of experience points
- needed for unlocking the next stages was a bit too high.I understood everything
- when I reached the story mode (something about 7000 exp). To do anything (to
- rescue your girlfriend from the dirty hands of dr.Evil) in story mode you have
- to be a perfect submarine commander and exercise in earlier stages is vital.
-
-
- The play modes are as follows:
-
- Freeflight - you go onward with your subby as long as you can (usually to the
- first obstacle you meet). To the limit!
-
- Starsearch - you have three lives and you have to compete stages. To complete
- each stage you have to collect given number of stars.
-
- Stage - like in earlier playmodes, you have three lives. You complete
- different stages by passing given distances. The higher
- the stage is, the greater the distance.
-
- Hunter - you hunt for stars. Collect as any as you can before you crash.
-
- Story - here you set the trip to the moon to free your girlfriend from
- the hands of dr.Evil. It's a mix of all gaming modes mentioned
- above. You will receive different vehicles (submarine = seasick)
- to complete your task. (You expected to reach the moon with
- a submarine? ). Before each stage you are presented with cute pics
- showing snapshots of the story. Of course to watch all the
- snapshots you have to finish all stages (very hard task, because
- there is no save mode or passwords).
-
-
- During play you can hear music which doesn't drive you mad, is adequate for the
- type of game and even helps during play (rare). The sprites of vehicles are
- very cute and are beautifully animated. (I liked the helicopter a lot and those
- circles behind the subby are great!). Additionally you have an access to a
- statistic screen where you can see the number of games played, the total
- distance you passed during game and several highscore tables. One more feature
- I liked a lot is that you are able to watch instant replay after your
- crash-test or eventual completion of the stage. There could be one feature
- which is missing. I think that it could break a little of the monotony of the
- early stages if there was a possibility to choose other vehicles and to grab
- some other driving, diving and flying licenses.
