- <f1><c000> Through the Mazes of Menace
- <f0> Nethack 3.4.0 for GEM and tty environment
- review by Saulot
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- Surely you know this game, the longest developed rpg-adventure game on Earth or
- even in the whole known and unknown Universe. The original was developed for
- working in pure text environment. But luckily for us, the author of the Atari
- port, made a GEM version with "normal" graphics. So you are spared from learning
- the whole ASCII character set, command set and remembering the meaning of each
- character ("" is this a new kind of wall or a 23rd-level blood-sucking
- zombie-bat?).
-
- The primary objective (for the uninitiated), it is very simple: grab
- as many treasures as you can, find the Amulet of Yendor, don't die in the
- process and escape from dungeon.
-
- The system requirements aren't too high - 2Mb of free RAM, 16 colours on screen
- and something like 3mb hard disk space (essential, because all game info is
- written to disk while playing the game). You can even use a monochrome monitor,
- but you have to convert the graphics files included in package to black & white
- by yourself. To play at 640*400 is best, but of course you can play in 320*200.
- In the latter case you will not see all the very important statistics and
- messages.
-
- <link=g44.scr>Nethack 3.4.0</l> is the hottest version and I will mention some improvements since
- the last release: ASCII mode in GEM(bleargh!!!!); removed redraw problems and
- almost all gfx flicker; nicer GEM dialogues; font support (not very user
- friendly as of yet); graphical tombstone 8-#, clipboard support and many more
- cosmetic changes.
-
- The beginning of the game is very simple. The player is welcomed by a nice
- colourful Nethack logo and he is asked to name his adventurer. After that we
- can chose a randomly generated computer character or create him by yourself.
- Creating a character consists of picking a gender (male/female or random), race
- and profession. We can choose from 5 races(dwarf, elf, gnome, human, orc) and
- 12 professions (archaeologist, barbarian, caveman, healer, knight, monk,
- priest, ranger, samurai, tourist(!), valkyrie and wizard). Each race has it's
- own abilities and flaws (tourist for example is weak, but he has an expensive
- camera - the monsters dislike being photographed and he has a credit card... a
- lot of money for shopping!). The profession determines the equipment that your
- character will have at the beginning and also some other abilities. After all
- this exhausting action, we can begin the quest for the Amulet.
-
- At the beginning you receive a short morale-boosting briefing before your
- deadly mission. Sometimes you posses some sort of pet(a dog or cat)to make your
- journey easier(?) and clean the dungeons from corpses of killed enemies ;). And
- then, there is only exploring of dungeons and seeking stairs leading to lower
- levels. The documentation states that the Amulet of Yendor is somewhere below
- the twentieth level but I didn't checked this, sorry. You can play this game to
- the final death because dungeons are randomly generated each time you enter a
- new level. The game itself forces the player to invent a new style of play each
- time he takes on another profession for the hero (the wizard will do no good in
- hand-to-hand fighting in comparison to a knight). There are a lot of traps,
- treasures and creatures to encounter. Not all will attack you. It strictly
- depends on your characters alignment. If you're evil, the evil creatures will
- have no reason to attack you, but good ones will certainly want to kill you,
- etc...
-
- Not all items or food are good for your hero. The food might be rotten (you
- must eat something), water might be poisoned (drinking is also required), the
- items might be cursed. Not all, but you better watch out. There are hundreds
- of items with hundreds of possible abilities, various traps, hidden passages
- and many more. Sometimes you will find a shop where you can buy some things for
- money that you have found in the dungeons. There is also a lot of specific
- humour contained in game. Don't be very surprised if someday you meet a hobbit
- asking for the One Ring.
- :))))))
-
- Thankfully, for all hardened players there is Save option. You can save the
- game (only one I'm afraid), and after doing this you are kicked to the desktop
- (!?). Very Mysterious and strange for me. I haven't seen such unique feature in
- all my long rpg-player career. Maybe it has to be in this way ?
-
- So, as you've learned, staying alive in dungeons isn't a very easy task.
- Monsters are get stronger with each level - are you scared? So you can try out
- the discovery mode. In this mode you gain immortality, so you can hack your way
- through the maze harmlessly, but in this case you will not be mentioned in Hall
- of Fame. So be warned!
-
- Nethack is fully controlled by the mouse (every option is accessible through
- the GEM menu), but mastering the keyboard shortcuts does the job better. The
- graphics are a very strong point of the game - it's colourful, well readable
- and cute! Some improvements could serve the game better. The game is mute (what
- about some nice music and sound samples?). Some windows that pop up in the game
- are quite disturbing("more" window). And why the hell can't I choose the items
- directly from the inventory? Instead, if you want drink something for example,
- you are asked for the letter of the item you want to drink (you receive a list
- of meaningless letters -AZKII f0r3v3r) and pressing '*' finally shows you all
- your possessions. Oh and I forgot completely - when you are eaten, bashed,
- hacked to pieces in the trap or simply died from another accident, the program
- shows a series of dialogs, but without the most important one - asking me if I
- want to play again. So after seeing my beautiful grave, I'm kicked out to the
- desktop. Pretty annoying and my hand aches from constant moving of this damn
- mouse pointer ;).
-
- I haven't noticed any other weak points, although the author states at the
- beginning of the doc that the Atari port is far from complete, but I couldn't
- bear the fact that I didn't perform even the lightest slagging ;). Anyway, have
- fun with this piece of software! It's an ideal thing to fill time between one
- application and another. Give it a try! It's a GEM!
