- <f1><c000> ROSES AND THORNS <f0>
- do we need all flowers in the scene garden?
-
- report by grey / mystic bytes
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- The Atari scene is like a garden - full of beautiful flowers, everything looks
- that damn cute, a place of never-ending joy, whatever happens... There is no
- place for anyone who could damage this picture. But it's a very specific garden
- - with only one kind of flower - roses without thorns... the rest is treated as
- an awful and useless weed. What do I mean? Well, I won't hide the fact that
- this article has been knocked together to side with somebody. "Somebody" who's
- one of the most controversial person in our garden. Who in opinion of some ppl
- is "only complaining, slagging, spitting..."? It's "rose with thorns", Eric
- Henschler a.k.a. <link=g29.scr>Moondog / tSCc</l>, father of the Undercover magascene.
-
- Let's take a journey through the past years for a while...
-
- Easter 1997. I decided to attend my 1st Atari party abroad, the follower of the
- famous Fried Bits parties - SILIconvention '97 in Bremen. Lotsa great Atari
- blokes, great mood and so on... I met Drizzt / The Naughty Bytes and we
- drunk some alco-stuph talking about atari scene at the same time. Suddenly,
- he dug out a piece of paper from his pocket and asked me to drop some infos
- from the polish wasteland. I asked him "4wot do you need it? "For a diskmag" -
- he replied. What diskmag?! Hey, did I miss something? Drizzt seemed to be
- annoyed a bit ;o) "Undercover, our main editor Moondog is working on another
- issue" - Drizzt added. ANOTHER one?! Woah! I never heard about this mag. I gave
- blank disks to him and asked for copies of their diskmag. Some time later I
- couldn't wait to see it, so I started to search for anyone who could let me use
- his ST or Falcon to throw an eye on it. And you know what? I was astonished. I
- wanted to scream "What a great diskmag! How could I miss it, dammit!". I loved
- the style of writing by Moondog, there was a lot sharp opinions but I didn't
- take it as malicious stuff. I fell in love with Undercover at first sight.
- Great source of the scene news, brave opinions, true reviews... a real diskmag
- for real sceners. That's it.
-
- After reading Undercover I felt very motivated and since this moment I was
- willing to co-operate somehow. I sent a snail-mail to Moondog and I got an
- answer very quickly. The letter was so friendly, scenish stuff, inviting
- close co-operation. I agreed and became a part of UCM. That was a big challenge
- for me.
-
- And you know what? Working with Moondog was a pleasure. I couldn't and I still
- can't understand why some ppl hate him so much. For his brave opinions? That
- he never wore and still doesn't wear rose-coloured spectacles? Is it proof he
- doesn't care about the Atari scene? Are you REALLY sure? Because I've had
- absolutely the opposite impression! He IS a true Atarian and loves these
- machines. His knowledge of the scene in general is bigger than many of his
- opponents. You don't have to agree with his style of expressing his opinions
- but saying "he isn't a true Atarian, he criticizes everything without any sense
- just to make someone angry" its simply dull. Moondog was brave enough to write
- reviews of various releases made by his scene friends and also give low
- ratings. And our 4ktro, "Virtual Dream", has been reviewed and wasn't rated too
- high even if some other ppl said it should. But you know what? When UCM came
- into my hands (btw: Moondog sent me every UCM issue just after the release via
- snail-mail!) and I called Sqward to tell him about it he asked: "who reviewed
- our release?". When I said Moondog he replied "Ok, cool". We treated Moondog as
- a sharp but true review writer.
-
- I also remember the day when I got an idea to supply the competitor MAGGIE
- magazine with an intro. MSB made a Falcon intro esp. for 25th issue of
- Maggie. And I never heard even a SINGLE word of complaint about it from
- Moondog. We were still co-operating...
-
- That's right, Moondog could skip some slaggin's just like the various forms
- of the "f*ck" word... But that's his way of expressing opinions. Some ppl
- accept it, others don't. I remember the day when I also felt disappointed when
- reading one of the articles. It wasn't about the scene or any MSB release,
- but... just the short sentence which couldn't leave my mind for a long time -
- "Christianity is sh*t". Well, I do believe in God and I am a Christian... But I
- forgot it, that's Moondog's opinion.
-
- After he left Undercover this magazine never was the same. It was different
- but not necessarily worse. But personally, I felt the lack of his editorials,
- his sharp and brave opinions, reviews... All was different and unfamiliar
- somehow.
-
- Now he's back again... His "child" is 23 issue old now...
-
- Some of scene-roses say again there is no place for thorns...
-
- ...forgetting that a real rose has thorns.
-
- Welcome back, Eric!
