- a main code-masta of the legendary Atari falcon demo-crew in Poland
- has been interviewed in our columns!
- by Grey / Mystic Bytes
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- Grey: Hand-shake, <link=g15.scr>Yonek!</l> :o)
-
- Yonek: Welcome!
-
- Grey: Long time no hear after "Shadows" faded out completely from the Atari
- scene... There was no life sign from you for about 5 years (gosh! how
- fast time flies... we're a couple springs older!) so please tell us how
- life behind the arrays of the "Shadows" and the demo-scene in general?
-
- Yonek: I remember these times very well, I was much more diligent in that time
- for sure! Nowadays, I became so lazy 'coz of my study or (let's say it
- another way) - being a student, diverted my attention from computers :)
- Apart from them I have more or less cultural affairs to do :o)
-
- Grey: Do you remember a day when you sat in front of your own Atari for the
- first time? And what kind of Atari machine was it?
-
- Yonek: Hahaha. Of course I do! I remember exactly this wintry day when my
- brother and I've got a Atari 1040 ST and how I learnt to use the mouse
- and hit in the icons.
-
- But there was also another day which I can't throw away from my mind -
- it was the spring evening when I brought a Falcon to the house. I was
- watching various demos through the whole night :o)
-
- Grey: When did you get a Falcon? And what was your first impression? "What
- a waste of money, I regret my choice!" or "Wow, this machine is
- marvellous, just like expected!".
-
- Yonek: This "investment" was a great move, a lot of innovations, all these
- colours, sound, hard disk, speed. Honestly, it turned out to be a
- better machine than I first expected, after reading all reviews in
- various media-press.
-
- Grey: Does the Falcon perform to all your wishes concerning Atari machines?
- Is there anything that you would like to kick the engineers butts for?
- Did they f*ck up something in the Falcon hardware? And what do you miss
- in it?
-
- Yonek: Generally, it was a very good machine. Maybe I've missed not having
- good documentation. I still remember this wonderful french tutorial
- which was playing on my nerves so much! I couldn't understand any
- single word of it 'coz I didn't know this language :o)
-
- Speaking about Falcon - it fitted perfectly to my needs. However it
- would be so cool to have a bit faster machine :)
-
- Grey: If you could choose between 3 machines what's the friendliest one to
- code for? ST, Falcon or PC? Or maybe another? Please describe every
- machine in a few words at least.
-
- Yonek: ST and Falcon was almost identical if we talk about tools. PC since the
- birth of Windows 2000 changed the process of writing. you don't need to
- reset your computer after every 5 minutes 'coz our program locked it
- up.
-
- Grey: What's your current computer equipment? Is your Falcon covered with a
- one meter dustcover? Hidden somewhere deep in a wardrobe waiting for
- nostalgic memories and the mercy of her user?
-
- Yonek: Currently I am using a PC with average configuration but I don't care
- about it. PC is only a part of plate :).
-
- My Falcon is in a safe place and waits for better times.
-
- Grey: Did you ever think about coding an intro or a multi-part demo for ST?
- Does any effect left your hands? 8-bit Atari coders who bought the ST
- like Darth / Pandemonium said that it's "so hard" to code something
- worthwhile on it. What's your opinion? Is the ST really *THAT* tough as
- a code-machine?
-
- Yonek: I rather didn't plan any production for ST :) Of course I wrote a
- couple small things, but it was before I became a Falcon user. A major
- problem in coding on the ST was graphics modes (or LACK of them!).
-
- Grey: Now it's time for a small note of nostalgia - the good old times of the
- "Shadows" activity :o). This group became a legend of the polish Falcon
- demo-scene, no doubt. "Shadows" - respected for the very high-quality
- productions, attracted the attention of other 8-bit Atari crews such as
- Cobra and Pandemonium (formerly known as High Voltage). And all thanx
- to the teenage 15 years old guy... :o) If I remember well, you were 15
- years old when you joined "Shadows", right?
-
- Yonek: I think I was 16 years old but I'm not sure... And yup, they were
- golden years! I've had "a bit of a different life" than my friends from
- school. I nicely remember my visits at various parties. Every trip was
- an excellent experience, I've met new ppl and visited new places. I
- don't know if will visit such weird places once again, not too mention
- party-places.
-
- Grey: What was your first effect released under the wings of the Falcon?
-
- Yonek: I don't know to be honest. Probably the most known and liked "fire" :)
-
- Grey: Just after your latest "ACYL" release shown at QuaST '97 "Shadows"
- crumbled... Musician Cedyn and you left the group to create the Atari
- section of "Freezers" - the Amiga demo-group. If rumours are true, it
- was mainly caused due to the internal conflict in "Shadows" between
- Cedyn and the main leader Konop. Is it true?
-
- Yonek: I remember there was some kind of quarrel between them but it was
- rather a "friendly war" which became forgotten a short time later.
-
- Cedyn and I left Shadows to join Freezers.
-
- Grey: Would you deny or confirm the rumour about the idea to release a new
- demo for the Falcon released under the "Freezers" label? What happened
- to this project? Was it begun at least?
-
- Yonek: There were plans to create something under this label, but due to the
- twisted affairs happening at that time it never saw the light of day.
-
- Grey: Are you still active on the demo scene at all? What group are you in?
-
- Yonek: Nope. There is quite a new generation of sceners. Only remnants left
- from the "old" ones...
-
- Grey: Did you know that you are still a very respected Falcon coder 'til now?
- Is there any chance to see Yonek back on the Atari scene sometime then?
- I am pretty sure that the Atari community would be very happy to hear
- such news...
-
- Yonek: Oooh, thanx. I didn't know that anyone remembed me still. Well, who
- knows? Maybe I will show up on the Atari scene, no-one knows what
- tomorrow brings :)
-
- Grey: Thanx a lot for accepting this invitation to trip through the Shadows
- history! Stay cool! Just stay the way you've always been!
-
- Yonek: Thanx as well!
