Subject: (ztt) 2nd try: Heights of Abraham
Date: 01 Jul 1998 07:46:43 -0500
I posted this question once already, and I'm sure someone knows the
answer...
Can anyone please tell me: what has been released on ZTT by Heights of
Abraham to date, what's coming soon, and how can I get it via mail order
in
the US?
Thanks. John

As far as I know ZTT hasn't released anything yet. From what I've been told
by other people familiar with the group, the album coming out was actually
issued a few years ago on a small label in the UK. I don't know if that's
true but if anyone can confirm or deny it that would be swell.
As far as a US release, Universal will be releasing it...it's just a
question of when. It seems like that this year is a good candidate. ;)

Date: 07 Jul 1998 16:52:52 -0600
I'm a new subscriber to this list, so pardon me if this topic has been
addressed in earlier times. I'm trying to fill in some of the earlier TCH
productions that never really reached the US. I've got TCH's Dollar
productions, except for "Handheld in B&W," which I've never even heard. My
trip to London: fruitless.
Is any of the TCH Dollar material available on the slew of Dollar
compilations on CD? Any suggestions for obtaining the 45? The LP? I'd
even be open to a cassette tape exchange...
While I'm at it, how about his early productions of Philip Jap, the Korgis
45, or this Chromium LP I just saw on the discography... is any kind soul
open to a sale or exchange?

Subject: (ztt) Comfort: HIGHLY Recommended Mail Order
Date: 08 Jul 1998 18:43:30 -0700 (PDT)
A million thanks to those who recommended the Japanese mail-order service
called Comfort (ohkura@mbox.kyoto-inet.or.jp). I ordered two Japanese CDs
from them, one of which was the 1995 Japanese reissue of Propaganda's "A
Secret Wish" that included the four bonus tracks. I mailed my order from Los
Angeles to Japan 17 days ago -- and received my order today! Now that's what
I call fast!
I was told by Comfort that the Propaganda CD is a hard-to-find item, and
that they may not be able to locate another copy. Still, it can't hurt to
send an e-mail asking about it, if anyone else wants a copy. They are VERY
prompt about e-mailing replies!
The CD is great, of course. Someone wrote that it is the vinyl mix of the
album, plus the four bonus tracks. I didn't dig my vinyl copy out of storage
to confirm that, but I can say that there are many songs on the Japanese CD
that are different (and not merely shorter) mixes of the equivalent tracks
on my old Island CD. The total length is 73:39, and the four bonus tracks are:
Femme Fatale (The Woman With Orchid) -- 3:20
Das Testaments Des Mabuse -- 6:32
Duel (Bittersweet) -- 7:37
P-Machinery (Beta) -- 10:49
An insert is included with the booklet, featuring song lyrics that are often
amusingly (if not mind-bogglingly) incorrect. Also, the paper "sleeve" that
covers the edge of the CD (and is written almost completely in Japanese)
lists other Japanese ZTT re-releases:
ZANCE (WPCR-15) no bonus tracks mentioned
FGTH "WTTP" (WPCR-16) 2 bonus tracks, previously mentioned by another poster
as being two mixes of "Two Tribes" (Fluke's Minimix 3:50 and Fluke's Magimix
5:27)
FGTH "Liverpool" (WPCR-17) 4 bonus tracks. I have this one, and know that
the bonus tracks are four more mixes of "Two Tribes" (Fluke's Moulimix 7:03,
Teckno Prisoner featuring Adamski 6:20, Legend Mix 5:13, Work-Out Mix 5:33)
Here's where things get tricky:
WPCR-18 is an Art of Noise CD that says it has one bonus track, but I can't
read what the title is (presumably "Who's Afraid..."). No idea what the
bonus track is. Anyone?
WPCR-19 is "Daft" with one bonus track. Don't know what that track is, either.
WPCR-20 is "A Secret Wish," plus four, as mentioned.
The next two catalog numbers are a different format, possibly meaning that
they are cassettes:
WMC5-644 is "Bang!", with no bonus tracks mentioned.
WMC5-695 is also by FGTH, but I can't decipher the title.
Anyway, hope this has been useful (and not too redundant of things that may
have been posted here before).

I've really been considering ordering that cd from them, but I want to
make sure that the cd has the songs I want. Since you ordered it, I can
ask you!
1) Does it have "Frozen Faces" on it?
2) Is the version of "Duel" the one with vocals (the lyrics to "Jewel")?
3) Is the Dr. Mabuse/Strength to Dream the version that runs together and
is like 10+ minutes long?
Thanks!

Answering earlier questions in this thread:
* The bonus tracks on WPCR-18 ("Who's Afraid") and WPCR-19 ("Daft") are
"Close-Up" and "Close-Up (hop)", respectively.
* WMC5-644 ("Bang!/Hits") is a CD, no different tracks but a slightly different
track order from the UK issue.
* WMC5-695 is "Relax Remix": six "Relax" mixes and four "Welcome To The
Pleasuredome" mixes, including old and '93/'94 mixes.
* WPCR-20 ("Secret Wish+4"):
. Has "Frozen Faces" (which makes it "Secret Wish+5", really)
. Has both the regular and bitter-sweet mixes of "Duel", both of which
have vocals -- no surprise as "Duel" is a vocal track by default.
. Does *not* have "Das Testament Des Mabuse" (the long version with
"Strength To Dream" at the end), though it is labeled as having it (the
track labeled "Das Testament..." is actually "Dr. Mabuse (13th life)").
Full details on all these releases are in the discography as noted below.

Subject: (ztt) More "Secret Wish" Details
Date: 09 Jul 1998 10:10:57 -0700 (PDT)
I've now done A/B comparisons between the Japanese "A Secret Wish" and my
1985 UK ZTT/Island CD (CID 126). First, answers to some questions:
At 10:19 PM 7/8/98 -0400, Patrick Daly wrote:
>1) Does it have "Frozen Faces" on it?
Yes, apparently the same 4:22 version as appeared on the original UK CD.
>2) Is the version of "Duel" the one with vocals (the lyrics to "Jewel")?
Yes -- but the version of "Jewel" on the Japanese CD does NOT have words
(only "wails," but no intelligible lyrics as such). The track length on the
Japanese CD is 3:10, vs. 6:22 on the UK version. The 3:10 version seems to
be merely an edit of the longer one (as opposed to a remix), with the lyrics
section deleted.
>3) Is the Dr. Mabuse/Strength to Dream the version that runs together and
>is like 10+ minutes long?
No, that was the version on the original UK CD, which was 10:41. The
Japanese CD splits them -- and puts "The Chase" between them! The Japanese
CD's "Mabuse" mix appears identical to the mix on the original UK CD,
although in shorter form. The most noticeable edit is that the "drum break"
portion does not appear. The beginning of the "Strength to Dream" track is
different from what appears within the UK "combined tracks," though. Also,
the combined length of the two individual tracks on the Japanese CD is
shorter than the UK "combined tracks" mix (5:03 plus 3:01 only totals 8:04,
not 10:41).
Other comments:
Parts of the Japanese CD are lower in volume than the UK CD, and some parts
seem "bassier." (Note: This is not a complaint.) Also, despite my first
impression, it seems that most of the songs are not different mixes but
edits (and several tracks are identical to their UK CD counterparts). And
the songs that do have sections mixed differently are identically mixed in
other parts. Here is a brief blow-by-blow:
"Dream Within a Dream"
UK CD: 9:09
Japanese CD: 8:04
Partially different mix, and shorter.
"The Murder of Love"
UK: 5:12
Japan: 5:16
The intro (the "martial drumming") is four seconds longer on the Japan CD,
but the rest seems unchanged.
"Jewel"
UK: 6:22
Japan: 3:10
As mentioned, this is an edit that deletes the lyrics portion of the song.
"Duel"
UK: 4:42
Japan: 4:47
I didn't hear any difference; the extra five seconds may be only extra
fade-in, fade-out.
"Frozen Faces"
UK and Japan: 4:22
Apparently identical.
"P-Machinery"
UK and Japan: 3:50
Apparently identical.
"Sorry for Laughing"
UK and Japan: 3:27
Apparently identical.
The next songs appear in different order on the two CDs. Japan is "Dr.
Mabuse," "The Chase," "Strength to Dream." UK is "The Chase," "Dr. Mabuse"
(which incorporates "Strength to Dream").
"The Chase"
UK: 4:04
Japan: 4:05
Apparently identical.
"Dr. Mabuse"
UK: 10:41
Japan: 5:03
Deletes drum break; no other obvious major changes.
"Strength to Dream"
UK: Appears within "Mabuse," and is not listed separately
Japan: 3:01
Beginning is mixed differently from version within "Mabuse."
...and four bonus tracks not on the UK CD appear on the Japan CD:
"Femme Fatale (The Woman With Orchid)" 3:20
"Das Testaments Des Mabuse" 6:32
"Duel (Bittersweet)" 7:37
"P-Machinery (Beta)" 10:49
All in all, an item that no ZTT fan should be without. Highly recommended.

The Japanese version of "Jewel" is not an edit, but the normal album version.
The version on the original UK CD was a slightly edited version of "Jewel (cut
rough)", the 12" version.

Hi,
I believe exactly the same tracks (except for the four bonus tracks) are on
the German re-issue that came out a few years ago on ZTT / Warner. Catalogue
number is 4509-94749-2. You might still be able to get it (it's even sold at
a 'special price' which means it's a bit cheaper than usual).

The UK Year Ten reissue also replaces "Jewel" with the edited-intro version of
"Jewel (cut rough)". Otherwise you're right, it's pretty much the same thing
as the Japanese issue but without the bonus tracks.

Haven't I said that before (lost tapes)? With all of the acetates that I have
heard of floating around the collector world and given the seemingly
unorganized business that is ZTT - it doesn't surprise that Trevor Horn
personally has no idea where half of the mix tapes are that he spent much of

but let's hope that someone at the little lable that could had the foresight
to archive everything that was ever mixed up at Sarm...

Subject: (ztt) Trevor Horn info
Date: 13 Jul 1998 07:09:57 -0400
Hello;
Saw this on the Tower Records weekly email magazine, and thought it
might be of interest for you Trevor Horn completists:
7. pro-rock hegemony of the week:
What do the following films have in common: 'BUFFALO 66,'
actor-director Vincent Gallo's dark comedy of domestic manners;
'ARMAGEDDON,' producer Jerry Bruckheimer's flacid millenarian
blockbuster; and 'ANASTASIA,' the full-length turn-of-the-century
period-musical from Fox's animation subsidiary? All feature music by
current or former members of the progressive rock group Yes. In the
case of 'Anastasia,' it's a straightforward production gig for Trevor
Horn, who filled in for vocalist John Anderson on one Yes album
('Drama') and who is best know for his work with the Art of Noise and
Frankie Goes to Hollywood; Horn produced the 'Anastasia' song "In the
Beginning" sung by Richard Marx and Donna Lewis. (Just say no.) Now,
almost the full 'Armageddon' music soundtrack was composed by
guitarist Trevor Rabin, who joined Yes for the '90125' album (which
Horn produced). Thankfully, Rabin's score is fairly free of the
unintentionally comical finger-mangling pyrotechnics that
distinguished his contribution to the 'Twister' score last summer.
(Instead, it apes the saccharine ambience of 'Titanic.') Given that
'Buffalo 66' premieres today, there's no taking full account of the
role Yes plays in the film, but if the trailer is any indication, the
dingy drama is a veritable prog fest. (Apparently King Crimson also
graces the score.) The entire advance trailer to the film unfolds to
the blaring accompaniment of the Yes song "Mood for a Day" from the
'Fragile' album, to whose skewed meter and stop-and-start syncopation
it is tightly edited. Sure, there's undoubtedly a heavy dose of retro
camp hipness at play here. But the fact is that in the dark of the
theater, watching Gallo fight it out with his parents and costar
Christina Ricci, one can't help but marvel at the sheer power of
Yes bassist Chris Squire, whose subsonic virtuosity seems to rattle
the screen. (Weidenbaum)

Hi all,
I just picked up this odd 12" called Escape from New York by nasty box.
It's in great shape and has some Trevor Horn and Stephen Lipson
involvement, I wasn't that impressed so if any of you ZTT-ites out there
are interested, let me know!
I also still have the Propaganda 12" for sale (Dr. Mabuse)--and I lost the
email of the guy interested in the Seal single--it accidentally was deleted
(if you were interested in a Seal single--please email me again!) :o)
Take care,
Jon

Dear all,
I decided to proceed with a "summer cleaning" of my record collection.
I realized that I didn't listen to more than 500 records anymore.
So, these records are for sale now.
Most of them are "pop &wave - 80's" bands/artists, including many ZTT
related items.
If you want to have a look, go to :

The list is not detailed, please contact me for further information

The extra seconds truly is simply a mastering difference. However the
versions are in fact different:
The original UK CD issue (CID 126) did have a unique mix which differs
around the moment of 1:39...
On CID 126 the vocals only go "It's too late, the decision is made by
fate.", whilst on the original LP (and thus on all the reissue CDs)
goes "It's too late, the decision is made by fate, *made by fate*."
> "P-Machinery"
> UK and Japan: 3:50
> Apparently identical.
Also a tricky one: CID 126 had the exact 7"-single version, whilst
the version on the LP and reissue CDs differs from that by some
additional industrial percussive beats (like a steamhammer) between
2:31 and 2:44 (slowly fading to the end).

cdnow.com lists the "Electric Hush" album as released on ZTT, with a track
list and everything, and like all imports it's 30% off at the moment ($20).

Yeah, actually this just shipped this week on import. Supposedly, UNI is
going to be releasing it in the US, but I'm a bit skeptical. Their support
of the 808 State Best of was good intentioned (they wrote a great press
release) but ultimately quite lacking IMHO.

Interesting Wendy & Lisa news item in this weeks L.A. Weekly:
There is an advertisement for an upcoming show of Wendy & Lisa with Lisa
Germano at the Roxy Theatre on Aug 12th. That in itself is pretty unusual
since they haven't played in a long time. But in the ad it says: "Wendy &
Lisa - GIRL BROS. - their first studio album in 7 years".
Unfortunately, it doesn't list a label or any other information. I do a lot
of new release music database updating at my job, but I haven't seen any
notice of a new Wendy & Lisa album from any of the majors or any of the
smaller labels for that matter. Hopefully, this will be the album that
Trevor Horn worked on so many years ago that was reportedly refused release
by MCA (was it?) at the time.

Thought you might be interested in my review of this compilation, which
was published in DJ magazine a few issues ago...
Pizzicato Five - Happy End of You
(Matador)
Pizzicato Five's output just seems to get better. That said, this isn't
exactly a P5 album... It was only a few months ago that I had the
pleasure of reviewing Pizzicato Five's Happy End of The World on these
very pages. Looking back, a 9/10 review was certainly generous, but it
was one of those instant classics. Happy End Of You, on the other hand,
is a remix album with new interpretations of almost all the tracks by a
very diverse array of beat surgeons, many of which have been steadily
leaked on promo for the past year.
As always with a remix album, the results are very, very varied. Some
you'll love forever and others you'll want to instantly forget.
Automator's mix of 'Love's Theme' is fresh and useful on the dancefloor.
808 State's track on the other hand adds nothing more than a percussive
backing to an original that was best placed as a quirky end of night
cheese theme, rather than a mid-night groove. Mixes from Daddy O, DJ
Dara and John Oswald are great for 12"s but aren't going to set the
world alight as album tracks. But it is interesting to hear bands like
GusGus, the High Llamas and Saint Etienne in control - the latter's take
on the P5 sound is exactly what you'd expect, but quality all the same.
But final prizes should go to Momus ('Trailer Music') and Daniel Miller
(working with Gareth Jones on 'The World Is Spinning at 45rpm') who both
use their remixing might to completely rip up the originals but retain
their original quirkiness.

Bang! mkI == Bang!, the Japanese remix compilation that came out in '85 or so,
with the tribal/urban "Pleasuredome" and "Two Tribes (hibakusha)", among
other things.
Bang! mkII == Bang!...The Greatest hits of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, the
