It was around 1987, I think. Somewhere after the Liverpool release,
I think. The album might be released in the summer of '87. God, why
do I know this?? :-)

It might have had some relation to "U2" too :) I think it's just
co-incidence.

OK. Here's a translation:
It may sound like Trevor Horn used a massive selection of different
effects on this track. But most of them is en fact sampled from an old
jazz funk record called Kool Is Back made by a band called Funk Inc. For
sure one of the World Famous Supream Teams favorite breaks from their
radio show. Originally it sounds like this....
It's this break that has delivered the incredibly shape trumpet sound as
we heard as the intro [???] of Owner of a Lonely Heart. And it the same
loop that used on the incredibly effective break down in the middle of the
track. It's this I'm talking about....
Then Trevor was ready to make this almost genius engineering musical
piece he faced a single problem. As you remember his very primitive
sampler was only able to sample one second at a time [he told earlier]. So
forget everything about looping drum beats as you would have done at this
time here in the 90'es. Instead he took three small pieces of the Funk
Inc. beat. The trumpet as you heard before....
A one second piece of the drums which sounds like this....
And another piece of the drums which sounds like this....
And when he connected these three pieces together it sounded like this....
Errr perhaps not that impressive. But if you own good creative skills of
using different effects, reverb and compressors. Then you can make the
beat sound like a lot more. I gave our technician Peter an hour to play
with the sounds. And I'm sure that Trevor Horn spend several days on the
thing. But in just an hour it's possible to make it sound like this....
PS. Kool Is Back is from an LP titled Funk Inc. released in 1971 on Prestige.
Who wouldn't love to have a copy.

It was the in-house label of 80s production team Stock Aitken & Waterman
- famed for churning out hit records at an alarming rate for a vast
number of artists of dubious talent... they wrote No.1 hits for Kylie
Minogue, Jason Donovan, their studio tea boy Rick Astley, etc.

Actually, the sounds shared with ZTT are mostly PPG Waveterm samples (if
my ears don't decieve me) - another 8-bit sampler of extreme age & cost.
Also, the Roland 727 drum machine which was heavily used on "Watching
the Wildlife" was also a favourite of S.A.W.
> What I'm wondering (as I don't have too much background knowledge)

Well, apart from them both essentially being outlets for a production
team rather than a roster of artistes, the strongest connection that I
know of is that the first ever Stock, Aitken Waterman track was "The
Upstroke" by Agents Aren't Aeroplanes - which had a cover mimicking the
Relax "Two Bodies" picture, but featuring the 2 girls in the band.

You can hear the PPG on a lot of ZTT stuff, often superbly programmed
by Andy Richards (I've got a PPG Waveterm B, and I recognise many of
the factyory sounds). SAW used the PPG in their pre-fairlight (ie
pre-1987) days. A lot of Fairlight CMI Series III samples can also
be heard on both ZTT and SAW productions (I will soon get a new HD to
the CMI, end then I can check the whole sound library). Another
common machine is the Linndrum - haevily used on both SAW and ZTT
recordings.

Hello everyone;
I was exploring the web today, and came across the following URL:
http://www.kgb.co.uk/~skuds/spizz/ssinbala.html
Apparently Claudia did vocals on a song called "In Balance" with a
group called Lifestyle back in 1994. I don't recall seeing anything
about this in the discography.
Does anyone know anything about this??
As if there weren't already enough obscure Claudia recordings to
chase, now it appears there's another one.

I'm a mature student at The University of Sunderland, my hometown in
north-east England.
Back in '84, I was crazy for FGTH, and that lead me on to Propaganda and
all things ZTT. I still play all their stuff at home!
Currently, I'm doing an essay on the ausio-visual experience that is the
video for Two tribes - one of the most powerful and compelling clips ever
produced. Godley and Creme at their best!
If any of you guys n gals have any interesting facts / theories or just
plain trivia about the video, would you get back to me so I can bolster
my assignment? At the moment, it just reads like a crazy fan writing an
appreciation of FGTH!!

Well, not really intersting, but there was a newsitem about violence
in video clips back then, and they showed parts of the Two Tribes

This would probably be classic 80s pop show "the Tube", which credited
Poppy for theme music (at least for 1 of the tunes it used over the
years)... ZTT said at the time it would never be released, and I have
never heard of any acetates escaping from ZTT until now.

There is a new Warp single out that has a sample of Andrew Poppy's "The

second index marking off of the original issue (did the reissue retain the
index marking for the first track?). The sample is lightly in the

I don't know about you people, but I was thinking it got a bit quiet
about 808 State in the last few month.
So I was happy to see Darren Partington sitting on the sofa when
turning on MTV's Partyzone on Friday (well, Saturday actually).
Unfortunately I had already missed nearly the complete show, but it
gave a good reason to surf to WWW.808STATE.COM just now...
...to find out it wasn't that quite all the time and that none other
label than zet tee tea is planning to release a new (remix) single and
a Best-Of album of them! (And I thought they had split!)
Hey, you should have given us a hint, GlobalState...! ;-) At least
before the Partyzone show. What news did Daz tell on the show?
However, I've been told they didn't show a video for Pacific 98.
Cheers
Joerg
P.S.: Is it really true? ZTT don't even mention 808 State on their

They didn't show anything by 808 :-< Try tonight.
DAZ didn't tell anything about the release other than that they do it to
close a chapter of 808 State to start a new one. The CD will have some
remixes on. He said that they will release some new singles over the
summer and maybe an album at the end of 1998. We'll see.....

Hello, I am a new member to the ztt mail-newsgroup. My name is
matheas . Pronounced muh-THAY-us. This is both my stage name, and the
name I am actually called.. I am an "aspiring" recording artist. I
found my way to this mailing list because I had always admired "whoever"
produced Seal's first 2 albums. I had heard a bit of the story (not much--
I'd like to know who discovered whom etc.,.. feel free to email me or post
it) of Seal's start with his producer, and I have gotten to that same point
in my lifetime. So I hopped on the internet to find out who it was and
maybe track him down. Or find a good competent Producer along the way...
instant hits on some guy named Trevor Horn, which struck a bell. I was
surprised to see whole websites dedicated to him and his work! These sites
refreshed my memory that he had worked on some of my favorite music (pet
shop boys for one) and worked on other music for which I'd always admired
the production more than the song itself.. even before I knew what a
producer 'was'.
He seems to be a busy guy and I don't even know if I'd trust him
(after reading some stuff about him here in the archives).. but I am
looking for a major-label producer.. I'll work on it, and to stray in to
offtopicville you are all welcome to notify me of contacts of competent
producers. I like Seal, am a solo male artist who has strong melody in
acoustic post-alternative style and then some..
It does seem 'awfully quiet' in here. Lucky I didn't subscribe to
the Digest! :) Well, I'll be off. Let me know .. and thanx.
cheers,
matheas .

Yes, it was shown right at the beginning of the show. The video was made by
the MTV Partyzone Massive and was a sort of medley of loads of different
808 video clips - very fast moving. I'm not sure if this will also be the
official video when Pacific'98 gets the commercial release.

The initial pages are now going up for my new ZTT site - ZTT 'remembered'
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/3223/
follow the link..
It will cover the early years 1983-1988 (the best period in my opinion)
Please give me feedback as the site progresses.

If you have any scans for rare items, or rare items to trade (especially an
original or copy of Ambassador's live video/LD and any videos for these early
groups except FGTH) that are not on the pages, please e-mail me so we can work
out a deal.
Thankyou, Guy.

I haven't checked the pages yet, but if they are as good as your
Discographica pages I would say that they are brilliant!
BTW, I've got loads of ZTT ads from melody Maker/NME/Record
Mirror/The Face (mostly photocopies, I'm afraid). We've finally got a
public scanner here at school, so I can scan them (or at least some
of them...) if you want me to.

There is a really nice article in the current (21 March 1998) issue of
Billboard magazine ("Pop Maven Horn Shows Staying Power As One Of The
Industry's Top Producers" by Ben Cromer). Hit the newsstand and grab
yourself a copy ($5.95 in the USA / =A34.95 in the UK). I'll type it up if
anyone asks politely.

I interpreted Simone's comments as if ZTT wouldn't want to spend money
on a new video themselves.
BTW, I liked the audio mix. Is this gonna be released as well?

Finally, here's a first sign of the new Art Of Noise!
A friend told me, that he saw Nick Warren (of Way Out West)
stating "Art Of Noise: Dream In Colour [DAT]" in his DJ-playlist.
Remember?! Almost one year ago he said in an interview that they
would be remixing the new AoN single in summer - last year's that is...
Wonder if he's related to James Warren (of the Korgis), whom
Trevor Horn produced a single for, ages ago.
Yours
Joerg
P.S.: Also wonder if he's referring to the AoN original or already
their WoW remix.

Wasn't there someone else on the list that had already started compiling
a site of ZTT ads? If so it might be good to send your scans there
too.. If anyone can remind me where this site is, I have dug out some
ore recent ZTT ads - Sexus, Frames etc. but also some special one-offs

Subject: (ztt) New Shane MacGowan Single (!)
Date: 26 Mar 1998 14:37:46 +0100 (MET)
Hello!
My previous posting regarding a new Shane single wasn't exactly right.
It's actually "Rock 'n' Roll Paddy" (not "Paddy Rolling Stone") which
has been released:
* Shane MacGowan and The Popes: Rock 'n' Roll Paddy
CD: 1998 UK (ZTT: MACG003CD)
3:28 Rock 'n' Roll Paddy
3:36 She Moves Through The Fair
This might look like a very 'lean' single (R&R Paddy even being the album
version). But IMHO it's really worth buying, since the b-side is nearly
exactly the opposite of what you'd excpect from this traditional song and
from Shane MacGowan. Having an ultimately cool distorted guitar an a truly
bombastic snare arrangement, this even reminds me a bit of Simple Minds'
"Belfast Child".
More news: The cover-inlay doesn't only point to "www.ztt.com" but also
to a Shane website: "http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~laurence/macgowan.html"!
(Something for your listing, Lazlo.)
Last not least, there's a freepost feedback card supplied with the CD,
which promises info on the following ZTT artists:
"Adamski, Art Of Noise, Heights Of Abraham, Lee Griffiths, The Frames,
Shane MacGowan and 808 State"

morning all - i should have posted this a couple of days ago, but my ISP has
been messing me around... :-<
anyway...i picked up a white-label test press of the 'new' 808state single,
namely Cubik '98/Pacific '98 a few days ago. no info AT ALL, so i'm basing my
guesses on info from Markus' official 808 site at www.808state.com - go and
visit! ;-)
here's my thoughts on first hearings of the new mixes.
side a, track 1:
this sounds like the 'live mix' to me, as it has a flavour of the old 808state
versus... stuff. more like 808 vs 808.
quite a bit of scratching and lots of long vocal samples, including the main
one which goes; 'How are all you paratroopers out there? And the marines?' and
sounds like James Brown to me...
anyway, the track doesn't have a great deal of the original left in it (at
least for the first half), but it sounds pretty good. the new bass line reminds
me of a track called 'Jingo' from the late 1980s, if any of you remember it.
good stuff, and sounds pretty good on my new surround sound system! ;-)
side a, track 2:
i'm assuming that this is an 808remix.
this bears more resemblance to the original, but with a pretty uptempo snare
drum rhythm through it. lots of wacky notes chucked in here and there, and i
suppose you could call this an acid-ish mix.
nice one.
side 2, track 1:
cubik, original mix. nuff said, as i think you MAY have heard it before. ;-)
side 2, track 2:
a 'pacific' remix. the original track starts off as you would expect, and then
adds a housey 120-125 bpm drum pattern over the top. eventually an acid-style
keyboard riff kicks in, followed by some jazzy clarinet (GM, i assume).
i'm sure that this isn't the Grooverider mix, as there isn't a trace of a
jungle rhythm. maybe it's on another promo...
more info, as and when i get it...

to see the original "Relax" video. I hope this isn't too much to ask.
I've got something to trade ya if you'd be willing to make a video
collection for me. Thanks so much in advance and don't forget to
relax...

Sorry about the crossposting..but I figured a few(maybe more) people from
each list would be interested in what I've done:
I've taken all the interviews and/or videos I've recorded over the years and
put what I wanted to save on one tape...Here's what's on it(in order):
Orbital: Halcyon, The Saint(2nd version I believe..the one w/ the 9
different screens), The Box
Meat Beat Manifesto: Helter Skelter '97, Interview on 120 Minutes("120
Minutes of Nothing), Asbestos Lead Asbestos
Orb: Perpetual Dawn
Electronic: Interview of Marr and Sumner on 120 Minutes, Forbidden City,
Disapointed
Pet Shop Boys: West End Girls
New Order: World
Electronic: Feel Every Beat
New Order: Regret
Electronic: Getting Away With It
Pet Shop Boys: Opportunities
FSOL: We Have Explosive
Orb: Asylum
Coldcut: More Beats & Pieces
Moby: James Bond Theme, Interview on 120 Minutes(1st time), That's When I
Reach For My Revolver
Pop Will Eat Itself: Interview of Clint on 120 Minutes("120 Minutes of
Nothing"), Ich Bin Ein Auslander
Public Enemy: Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos, Bring The Noise(w/ Anthrax)
A few words..I don't exactly have the best editing tools..so there are
mistakes here and there..but every video is there(in all their entirety,
almost)..Since I did get some videos from Amp..some of the videos of their
weird mix/spin on it. Anyways..if anyone wants a dub of this..I'll be glad
to make them(sorry though..you'll get the whole thing..I don't have time to
take out bits and pieces for people)..I'm just asking for a few dollars(to
cover getting blank tapes and s/h)...Also..if anyone sees videos not here
but have them in their possesion(for example, Moby's "Go" or the first
version of "The Saint")..I'd be glad if I could get them :)..No copyrighted
material though..I'm still debating whether I want to put the MBM videos
from the Black Box Video Comp on a tape...Anyways..email me privately..and
we'll get this thing going...Thanks.
BTW, another tape is in the process..the EBN video remix of Coldcut's
"Timber" was on Amp recently..I want to save that. Lastly, if anyone has
questions..don't be afraid to ask :).
