A happy new year to all you out there!

BTW, now that they've split from Warner, maybe 808 State could come back?

Hi all, your humble admin, posting from work. Does anyone know whether
the "Betsy Cooke" who did backing vox on FGTH/Liverpool is the same person
as the Betsy Cook who did an album called The Girl Who Ate Herself?

Hi all
I thought I would introduce myself as a new subscriber to the ZTT
list. I am a 25 year old (for a few more weeks) male from Witham ,
Essex. Into B52s, Devo, Human League, Kraftwerk, M, Sparks. My
favourite ZTT acts are FGTH , Propaganda and Art of Noise. However
there was a time when I used to buy anything on ZTT.
I shall return to lurk mode for the time being, but once I start it
will be hard to shut me up <g>.

There was a programme celebrating an old TV show on British TV (The
Tube). On it, there was a clip of Das Psycho Rangers. I thought they
were pretty awful. Polished production but the song was like a very bad
Adam and the Ants song.
I also got a hold of Beating of Wings by Andrew Poppy. Nothing too
interesting. IMHO, pleasant if nothing else.
BTW, shocked to find that Trevor Horn produced one of the tracks for
Gary Barlow's "Open Road" album. One for the discography, Joerg.

Okay all you Buggles fans - I just opened my latest info bit from WEA. In the
upcoming US movie, "The Wedding Singer" (in theaters Feb.13) The Presidents of
the United States do a cover version of "Video Killed..."! Very interesting
considering the rumours that the group (Presidents) had already been
dissolved.
The soundtrack also features Bowie, Elvis Costello, Culture Club, Billy Idol,
Musical Youth (maybe "Pass The Dutchie"?), New Order, The Police, Psychedelic
Furs and Thompson Twins. The movie features Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore -
no rating information.
Just thought some of you might find this of some interest...
Be seeing you!

Video is a song the Presidents played live. They played it on their MTV
special and it also appeared (in live form) on the b side of, I think, the
Peaches single.
I don't know about a studio version.

Not sure if this was mentioned a while back (I've been away for a couple
of months) and definitely not sure if this is news-worthy, but Anne
Dudley did the string arrangement for "Viva Forever", the ninth track on
the Spice Girls' "Spiceworld" LP.
Definitely one end of the spectrum - the other end being "Who's Afraid
Of?" and "Ancient And Modern" being the middle.
Now what about that upcoming AoN (with Horn and Morley!) album someone
was talking about last October?

Yes - there are 2 different twelve inch versions, and a 7 inch. These
came out before the album, and the album mix soundls like it was remixed
from these, not the other way around.

It's no secret that "Kiss Like Ether" was generally available on disc, but if
"Absolutely Immune" was ever issued by ZTT as a commercial or promo CD-single
it's news to me and to a lot of other reasonably well-connected ZTT fanatics.
Are you maybe thinking of one of the two other singles from that album that
*were* issued on CD ("Snobbery and Decay" and "I Can't Escape From You")?
Not to be too skeptical about it, but I'd really have to see at least a
tracklist and catalog and matrix numbers, and preferably a scan of the
packaging and the disc itself, in order for me to believe that "Absolutely
Immune" was ever actually issued on CD.

I knew a manager of a record store I used to go to a lot who told me he had
Absolutely Immune on CD back in 88 (89?). I didn't really know him too well
and I only saw him a couple more times after that so I never asked him if it

Well, if Claudia's name is all over it, then it's maybe her first

I don't know definately, but I'm pretty sure she is, because the same
name is appearing on quite some TCH/ZTT productions - e.g. also Act, Marc
Almond, Seal (II).

I've heard it and all in all I found it 'nice' - but not much more.
It's soft pop.
Unfortunately I don't have the full credits to the CD, but to my
knowledge only one song ("Docklands") was produced by Trevor Horn.
The rest features producers such as Bruce Woolley, Stephen Lipson and
Betsy herself.

Well, I stated that Absolutely Immune was never released on CD single
(and I didn't mention Kiss Like Ether at all BTW) because I have been
obsessively collecting Act/ZTT for ages, and I have never come across
even a rumour that such a thing exists.
I would love to be proved wrong on this, but it will take something a
little more substantial than "Shame, SHAME foul imposter!" or "BW HA HA
HA" before I stop passing on info I believe to be correct to people who
ask for it :-) Can I be alone in thinking we should be a little more
grown up about this sort of thing?
On a similar topic, does anyone on the list have any insight on ZTT's
(pre-Warner) policy for which singles were available on CD? It seems odd
that, for example, there was (AFAIK) no CD single for "Watching the
Wildlife", and Act's first and third singles came on CD but the second
didn't seem to.
I have seen mention of a CD single and 7" for "Chance", but only in
wanted adverts, never for sale. Can anyone here confirm their existence?
I only have the 12" and a WEA promotional tape with Chance on it
(ostensibly to promote the single!) but this just has the album version.

Only for the 7" (which I have a sleeve scan of around here somewhere).
I've never had any real evidence for a CD-single and in fact if I recall
correctly the print ads for the single didn't mention one which implies pretty
strongly that one was never pressed.

Hello. To answer your question, I have the Chance 7". I don't however
have the cd5. I saw it listed in one of those thick cd books that tells
you how much your cd's are worth. It said that the Chance cd5 was worth
100 UKP. Now this was back in 1996, so if there were ever copies made, it
was probably less that 10 copies and they probably leaked out of the ZTT
office or manufacturing company or something like that. Why knows!

Personally I'd eat my hat if I ever saw an Absolutely Immune CD Single.
In ten years I have never even seen one offered for sale second hand.
It's no surprise that one wasn't manufactured unlike the other Act
singles - dont forget that when Snobbery & Decay came out, ZTT had the
financial backing of Island and when I Cant Escape From You appeared,
Warners were on the case. But in between, when Absolutely Immune
appeared, ZTT were on their own. And at the time CD singles were a lot
more expemsive to manufacture. Even the second Absolutely Immune 12"
was pressed in very limited quantities.

If I am correct in my understanding of CD manufactuing, the minimum
quantity that currently is economic to manufacture is about 500. As
chance was quite a while ago, I think CD-Rs were not available then, so
I am inclined to think the single got canned without any being made at
all.

Suffice it to say that, as much as we collectors may have wanted an item to
exist, some do not. I think that anyone advertising items such as a
"...Wildlife" or "Absolutely..." CD single is in fact just trying to lure your
money away from you because they were simply never made.
Now, what I would like to know is, how much does a label like Oglio,
Cleopatra, etc. have to pay to license a track for CD production. Has this
ever been proposed to ZTT? Obviously we are never going to see many of these
originals on CD format and we have the nice folks (read: *&@^#@^*) at ZTT,
and their brilliant insight, to thank for that.
But hey - in the slim chance that something DOES exist (because ZTT doesn't
even know what they released!!! - check out later editions of their typed
discographies) let's not flame each other, but just make sure the info is
verified...
Be seeing you...
John, Jr.
P.S. If someone has the time, and can get in touch with someone who knows
something, I would really like to know what the disposition of the original
masters are. Even if someone wanted to rerelease some of these mixes on CD, I
HIGHLY DOUBT that anyone at ZTT was smart enough to retain an archive copy!!!
I think that Warner, Trevor and Jill missed the boat entirely when they had
their anniversary (ZTT's) by NOT rereleasing some of the rarities....
Why didn't Paul Morley push the CD single thing - I mean, another format that
could chart? - why miss out on the fun? what was it now - you could chart 4
different formats on the UK chart? Maybe Ian would know the answer....

At the time of release of "Chance"(1986-87), manufacturing of CD's =

I have been toying for some time with the idea of trying to licence
tracks for a CD of rarities and selling it over the internet. Has anyone
been down this path before? Any ideas or suggestions? I guess labels
would frown on a single artist (or even single-label) compilation, but
how would people on this list resond to a compilation with 3 or 4 ZTT
mixes that never made it onto CD and the rest by other artists?

This ties in with my thoughts on this exactly, BUT I have a (non-ZTT) CD
that doesn't seem to fit the rules... Many years ago I saw a speculative
entry in Esprit's advert in Record Collector, for a CD of remixes by
Arcadia (a Duran Duran off-shoot).
As nothing ever came of this, and I never saw anyone even claiming to
have a copy over the next few years, I assumed this was one of the many
rumours that lead to nothing, until I found a copy!
It's a silver CD (which should mean it's not a CD-R) and if it's a
bootleg, it's the most convincing I have ever come across. Does anyone
have an thoughts on why a promo CD that many people would want just
vanished, and then all of a sudden, one single copy turns up years
later? If 500 suddenly reached the second hand market at once, I'm sure
I would have found it sooner.

Thinking along those lines, when reissues of the Yello back catalog were
being planned, I recall Lazlo, who runs the Yello mailing list, came up
with suggested bonus tracks to fill out the 74 minutes on each CD. The
suggestions were apparently ignored, but it was fun to think at least for
a little while that the "dream discs" had a chance. I believe the Men
Without Hats list had an influence on the track selection for the MWH
compilation that came out last year.
If a label like Oglio or Cleopatra were to license 2 CD's worth of the
best and coolest ZTT material to appease collectors and casual fans alike,
what would you want to be included? Perhaps we could actually make a

Subject: (ztt) ZTT Compilations?
Date: 19 Jan 1998 08:36:50 -0800 (PST)
Someone wrote recently that ZTT, now that it has gone the "completely
independent" route, should open the vaults and release a lot of things that
never have appeared on CD. Is it just me, or does this seem like the kind of
idea that makes so much sense it will never happen?
CD manufacturing costs are much lower than in the 1980s...ZTT already has
the masters in hand...the label has a devoted following among
collectors...the fans who were around in the '80s have (with any luck) more
disposable income now that nearly 15 years have passed...and there is even a
new avenue of distribution (the fabulous Internet). So it only seems like
common sense for ZTT to put out titles such as:
1) Frankie: The REALLY Complete 12 Inches. All of the non-CD B-sides and
cassette-only mixes probably would fit on three CDs. Make it a box. Simple.
2) Insignificance soundtrack. Hans Zimmer, one of the contributors to this
album, is now a multiple Oscar winner. And has the Roy Orbison track ever
appeared anywhere else? Those are two sales hooks right there. This is my
favorite soundtrack album ever, and it's a crime that it is not available on CD.
3) Act. Call it "The Final Act" or something, slap everything on it, make
every Claudia fan dance with joy.
4) Propaganda. Again, there are plenty of extended mixes and B-sides to
justify a CD compilation. This stuff is GREAT.
...and so on, and so on. This is all so obvious. Other labels have done
small runs of CDs that they did not expect to achieve "chart-topper" status,
so why shouldn't ZTT? They could even number the things and call them
"limited editions."
Is there a specific person at ZTT who should get groveling pleas like this
one? If anyone has the name/address, please post it.

1) Frankie: The REALLY Complete 12 Inches. All of the non-CD

Agreed. A box, the more discs the better. And nothing like the Depeche
Mode singles boxes, with each single on its own disc. I'd expect the
full 70+ minutes to be used on each CD.
2) Insignificance soundtrack. Hans Zimmer, one of the contributors
to this album, is now a multiple Oscar winner. And has the Roy Orbison
track ever appeared anywhere else? Those are two sales hooks right
there. This is my favorite soundtrack album ever, and it's a crime that

Also agreed. And include any remixes of the Glenn Gregory/Claudia tune
too.
3) Act. Call it "The Final Act" or something, slap everything on
it, make every Claudia fan dance with joy.
Sounds OK, although I already have Laughter, Tears..., Snobbery and I
Can't Escape on CD. Still, I'd like Ab Immune and those elusive Trevor
Horn Chance remixes, too...
4) Propaganda. Again, there are plenty of extended mixes and
B-sides to justify a CD compilation. This stuff is GREAT.
Yes Yes Yes!!! All of those vinyl- and cassette-only remixes, plus the
short version of Jewel (on the US vinyl version of Secret Wish). And
throw in the Propaganda vs. Frankie think too (should also be included
in the Frankie box).
5) ZTT Sampled compilation (includes Frankie's Disneyland - should
also be in the Frankie box).
6) I don't know how rare the CD versions are, but I'm an avid ZTT
fan and I've never heard the Anne Pigalle, or Nasty Roxx Inc albums. And
that Psych-Oh Rangers EP wouldn't be bad, either...
7) This would be tricky, as it's not ZTT in the strictest sense,
but how about Yes, Grace Jones, etc. remixes???
8) All rare Seal material (acoustic sessions, Unplugged session,
Love Is Powerful, various soundtrack songs, remixes, etc.). Again, this
could really be a box or a 2-disc set. With Seal and TCH/ZTT parting
ways, this would be a good way for ZTT to milk their past association
with him for all it's worth (see I.R.S. Records and REM's Eponymous).

COuld it be because people generally think (IMHO of course) that Stock

whereas a lot of the ZTT stuff (NOT all of it - especially not Das

I'm sorry for the confusion. The Stock et al was only mentioned because I
had heard that Warner doesn't want to issue any of it and they own it. I was
hoping that would not be the case for the ZTT catalogue.

Among other things - the "Into Battle" EP (everything from that EXCEPT
for "Battle" and "BeatBox" is on the "daft" CD). Though I do have enough
vinyl copies (about 10 or 12) to last a while.

Yes - that one or two songs per disc routine is a waste of plastic.
(Well, I guess it depends on who the artist is...I'd sell a kidney to get
all of the AoN 12"s on CD - seperately or not).

ZTT are seriously missing a bet on reissues. The China-era AoN material has
been licensed and relicensed over and over again, so there's clearly some kind
of market out there for it, and I can't imagine there being *less* demand for
the ZTT-era stuff than there is for things like The FON Mixes and Below The
Waste!
Don't get me wrong, I was happy to see the German FGTH CD5s when they came out
in '89, but let's face it, they were just straight reissues of the common
12"s. I don't understand why there hasn't been any attempt to get anything
more comprehensive released.

Bootlegs have a very limited reach, and 500 copies for a band that
usually sells a million copies, it is very rare.
And besides, something that most people who buy wouldn't part ways
with anyway.

Some of the AON material I'd love to see collected in digital format:
1) Close to the Edit (Closely Closely) mix -- I've got the 3" Japanese
CD, but it's a pain to play.
2) Paranoimia (Original) mix -- Max Headroom was a good guy, but he
bastardised this song from the original mix. To borrow from Otto Flake,
I believe the Max Headroom mix was the point that our beloved AON
stitched sequin to gimmick...
3) Legs (Original) and (Legacy) mixes -- Got the subway poster, gotta
have the mixes on CD. :-)
4) Moments In Love (Beaten) and (3 Fingers of Love) mixes -- Also on 3"
Japanese CD, still a pain to play. Ah,what the heck, give me all of the
Moments In Love mixes; there can't be any sour eggs in the lot, eh?
From FGTH:
1) Most of the Liverpool 12" mixes. Call me a heathen, but Liverpool is
a beautiful album with wonderful sound. It just had the bad luck to
follow WTTP...
2) Relax (Sex Mix) -- Whichever is the classic 28-minute mix. (Yeah, I'm
too lazy to check Lazlo's discography...)
3) Two Tribes (Intermission Mix) - The long version with the cool piano
intro and "Mine Is The Last Voice You Will Ever Hear" voiceover. God, it
still gives me chills 15 years later...
I'm sure a lot of these are available in separate form on various
obscure Japanese discs and the like, but I much prefer one-stop
shopping.
There are those who would suggest a hardcore fan could record all of
these in MP3 format and dump them onto a CDR for personal play on his
computer, but I couldn't possibly comment.

Apparantly Tim Simenon from Bomb The Bass is always asking China for the
chance to remix BeatBox et al each time they start commissioning yet
another new remix compilation...!
But at least each time China do a new AoN compilation they _reinterpret_
into the contemporary style - ambient house, techno, Drum & bass etc...
For ZTT to do a straight reissue compilation could only be seen getting
in on a very dodgy eighties revival - rather than trying something
new...
And on the reinterpreting for the present tip, they've already tried and
failed: when they handed Propaganda masters to T-Empo et al, who promtly
destroyed P Machinery for 7 Records...

IMHO... The current dance-rock crossover thing (check out the recent
'Spawn' soundtrack for some excellent examples) shows exactly how ahead
of their time Das Phychos were... And Homage To The Blessed is a
brillaint piano/vocal interlude which shows there were some good songs

True, there is NO WAY a compilation would have ever appeared under WEA.
On Warners' scale the Act (for example) fan base is so minimal
(including the Net) that a compilation would just be a waste of money...
The only hope I can see comes from the new independance and the fact
that the (UK) tenth anniversary reissues were predominantly controlled
by Waners, Morely's return and his involvement in the Web site.
But those are still pretty slim hopes...

Not really. More of a band specific revival if one must use that word. One
could hardly argue the recent Simon & Garfunkl box was a 60s revival.

I would like to see (hear!) a CD or two (or three, whatever it takes) of
EVERY SINGLE note that the original AoN recorded back in '83 & '84
(sessions which resulted in the "Battle" and "Afraid" recordings). That's
the only hope to hear more of the original noise. (INS?N! and IVS and BTW
are all great too, of course...)
On the subject of remixes, I may have to do one of those too (to keep
from having to listen to another dance mix CD of the artist formerly
known as AoN).

Hmm. I would reverse that spin and say that for ZTT to do a straight reissue
compilation would show some respect for the artists and fans without whom they
would not exist as a label -- as opposed to China's desperate attempts to
squeeze a few more dollars out of their only viable backstock of material by
jumping on every dance-music bandwagon that comes along.

I think we can put it down to the obvious answer - money. At the time

reckon had run pretty short of cash for multiple releases and also the
whole chart system (disqualifying multiple versions etc.) was in flux.

I actually kinda went down this road once or twice before. I came up
with several initial track listings for 808 State's State To State
compilation when it was initially slated... At the very beginning I had
it as a half 808 and half rare other ZTT stuff (S/O/R's Happy Feelings
and Switzerland were two I can remember including)...
When the tenth anniversary re-issues were first thought of, the ZTT
gang(sters) asked me for some 'dream' track lists and I obviously
happily obliged - although these were completely ignored - Zance turned
out very differently from what I think most ZTT fans would have hoped
for...
But I did collaborate with WEA International when they reissued A Secret
Wish, Liverpool, WTTPD, Daft, Whos Afraid (and others). I suggested the
extra tracks for the Japanese versions, which they followed as far as CD
length would allow...

Thanks Lazlo,
My sentiments exactly. The FON collection sounds like it was made in 1992,
all of the AON albums have withstood the 80s and the 90s as masterpieces of
their time. They will be talked about in 30 years just as we still are now.
The last two remix collections are poor representations to the new
generation of AON listeners of their genius (not that they were bad, but
they weren't representative.) Youth and LX were on to something with the
Ambient Collection, and you'll notice that Anne and JJ did endorse it
personally on the liner notes. Hip hop stations in San Diego are getting
requests for Moments In Love (the original 12" version). If enough stations
catch on (probably not), we may be seeing a reissue soon. (Let's hope....)
By the way, is the Daft collection worth getting on cd for $11.00? I have
it all on vinyl...I think. Anybody think so?

Yes - considering I've never see it for less than $16.00. Also, it's the
only way to get the "Into Battle" music on CD (with the exception of -
I've said it a dozen times in the past 48 hours - "Battle" and
"Beatbox"). I have it all on vinyl too, but I never play it 'cause I want
it to last forever. (yeah...)
P.S. - I agree that "Ambient" was pretty faithful - unlike "FON" and
especially "D&B".
Speaking of which - (and this is way off topic - why don't you reply
personally if you want) has anyone heard the Youth-produced symphonic
Zeppelin tracks? I want some opinions before I shell out $$$$.

So this is the "daft" tracklist:
1. Love (7.00)
2. A Time For Fear (Who's Afraid) (4.45)
3. Beat Box (Diversion One) (8.31)
4. The Army Now (2.03)
5. Donna (1.44)
6. Memento (2.12)
7. How To Kill (2.42)
8. Realisation (1.44)
9. Who's Afraid (Of The Art Of Noise) (4.21)
10. Moments In Love (10.17)
11. Bright Noise (0.05)
12. Flesh In Armour (1.23)
13. Comes And Goes (1.18)
14. Snapshot (2.34)
15. Close (To The Edit) (5.37)
16. (Three Fingers Of) Love (4.44)
17. Close Up (Hop) (5.13)
I just mailed it to someone, and while I was typing it up, I thought what
the heck is the sense in this track order? Definitely not the way I would
have done it. And if anything, "(Diversion One)", "Close (To The Edit)"
(the LP version), and "Moments In Love" (the EP/LP version) should never
appear on anything else. Never! That's nearly 25 minutes which could be
used for remixes!
Just a thought...

Thanks for clarifying - I keep forgetting that it was an import (cost me
nearly 40 bucks!!) 'cause it's the only one I have.
Of course, for those of you that have the American (or British?) version
- don't kill yourself to get the Japanese version, the bonus track isn't
all that good.

Here's an idea... (although I'm not sure how well it will be received,

the definitive AoN remix, with the best 10 (20?) getting released on

Seeing as Drum & Bass and FON are both remix cds, not at all.
Now, if AON got together to remix their own stuff... (incidently, i read
somewhere that they rarely, if ever, remixed. They recorded whole new
versions for the 12" and 7"s)

"Physical and Plastic."
While we're talking about released material from the vault over the

You're thinking of "Snapshot", which is usually 1:00 on "Who's Afraid"
(except for that weird Japanese version with "Closely, Closely" on it).

All Instinct ever issued on ZTT was "Swamp Out" (from the Sampled compilation)
and the performances on the Value Of Entertainment video. I don't think they
released anything after leaving/being dumped by ZTT, but you should know that
Instinct formed out of the ashes of Pigbag, who have quite a number of
releases out there.

I think I said it before - and Lazlo just said it earlier today -
"Memento" is being mistaken for "Snapshot", which is a minute long on the
American "Afraid" album and two and a half minutes long on the British
"Afraid" album. "Momento" is the same on "daft" as it is on "Afraid"
(even though the listed times differ by two seconds, right?).

1 - I don't have any additional info on this, but;
2 - I'd very much like to see this released (I don't think it'd
be a case of re-releasing, since it's never come out that I'm
aware of.) I would pretty much pay whatever was necessary to
get a copy of this
Given how difficult it is to obtain the "official" Claudia CD, as well
as the rarity of the Act CD, it would seem that there could be some
money to be made by a label to re-release this material. With some
useful marketing push, this stuff could actually become popular.
Whenever I listen to either of these CD's I'm amazed at how fresh they
still sound, years after their release. Lord knows that record
companies are spending enough of their marketing dollars trying to
convince us that their new material is worth listening to.
BTW, if anyone has an extra copy of either Laughter, Tears & Rage or
Love and Million Other Things that they're willing to sell, please let
me know. My copies have actually started to skip because I've played
them so much. I have an extra copy of the Kiss Like Ether CD single
that I'm willing to trade.

Well they had more songs written, anyway - their set at the gig that

Afaik there were only 2 CD singles from the ZTT era by Propaganda, both

I don't think this is possible. The aluminum in the CDs may be
deteriorating, causing skips or other playing problems, but simply playing a
CD does not cause any "wear." (In other words, a poorly made CD would start
deteriorating over time no matter how many times it was played.)
On another note:
The January 30, 1998 issue of "Entertainment Weekly" contains two articles
on Frankie Goes to Hollywood in their "Encore" section (the page opposite
the inside back cover). This section is one of those "flashback" kind of
features that remembers stories from years past. The first article, with a
photo of FGTH in front of the Hollywood sign, is headlined "Frankie Say
'Relax': The flamboyant English band comes to the U.S. with an overtly
sexual dance tune in 1985." After a brief summary of FGTH's rise and fall,
the article ends with a paragraph about how Holly left the band in 1987 and
the remaining members split up a year later. (Which raises the question: Did
the rest of FGTH ever release anything as "The Lads," which was rumored to
be a possibility at the time?)
The sidebar article is "Whatever Happened to Holly Johnson." It begins by
saying that rumors of Holly's death are greatly exaggerated, and that his
publicist actually issued a press release in 1995 stating that Holly was
still alive. The article says Holly has "returned to his first love,
painting" and quotes him as saying that his health "has improved 100
percent" thanks to new AIDS treatments. The article says he is working on
"an introspective solo album, 'Soulstream,' recording it in the studio at
the London home he shares with his manager and partner of 13 years, Wolfgang
Kuhle."
The issue has "Ally McBeal" star Calista Flockhart on the cover (in the
U.S., anyway). Both of the FGTH articles are short enough to be read at the
newsstand (for the cash-impaired among us). Enjoy!

First of all, i enjoyed it - Great Stuff!
But...now i have some questions:
1. Mark - Why aren`t they in color?
2. Regarding the "ZTT Sampled" ad on this site:
- Is the IQ6 picture is the sleeve you all know??? Because my Israeli
release have
a completely different sleeve!!! The ad is the first time i see this
UK sleeve.
- On the same ad there is also the AP IQ7. It is stated that it was
released
on LP & CS only. But the discography have :" CD: 1985 UK (??; ??)
".
So - was there a CD also?

Subject: (ztt) Holly & Claudia as artists...
Date: 27 Jan 1998 12:52:02 -0800
A recent post reminded me that Holly and Claudia both dabble in the art
sphere, but after talking to a couple of my friends also in the art
world, they've never heard of either person and don't have a clue where
to start looking for items by Holly or Claudia.
Anyone on this list know which galleries carry Holly Johnson's and
Claudia Brucken's art? If they're not linked to a particular gallery,
any ideas where in Europe their pieces are for sale? Or, failing that,
anyone seen works by Claudia and Holly? (I think some of Claudia's work
is on her album covers; not sure...) As a lad who came of age listening
to these two performers, if their art isn't ghastly, I'd love to hang /
place a piece or two in my house.
Regards,
ian

The one on the ad (the angular design that might remind you of the ZTT logo if
you squint at it) is the standard UK cover. I've never seen another one --
what's the Israeli cover look like? Any chance of a scan?

There was -- at least in Japan, but I haven't seen any evidence of an actual
UK CD at the time. Hence the question marks.

I should have mentioned that these ads were all taken from British UK music
magazines. Specifically, I think they are all from "No. 1" and maybe one
from "Smash Hits". I've posted them as they originally were in the magazine
so they are in black and white (with the exception of Rage Hard). I wish
they were all in color!

I've photocopied nearly all ZTT ads from Melody Maker and NME
1983-1987, but I haven't got a scanner so... I can't show them.
anyway, most of the singles were advertised one week in advance with
a small (one third of a whole page) ad, and then a full page ad the
following week. I really love these old ads - when I try to explain
to someone why I love ztt, I show them my ztt ad collection.

Hi!
I have some ZTT questions for the rest of you ZTT aholics--
What does the Shep Pettibone remix of Moments In love sound like? Is it
easy to find on 7" or cd? What songs are on the Moments In love cd? Esprit
UK had one listed for sale--is it worth it?
I found the Act laughter Tears and Rage album for $1 and really like it,
anyone know where i can find the UK 12" singles? Or the Claudia solo album?
I take it they're worth getting...
Anyone a fan of Artofsilence? I like it a lot (Giant Above just kicks ass
straight out...) I hear that he released another single recently, but can't
find it anywhere, any one know of anybody selling it? Does the Axiomatic
label take orders? Also, were there any remixes of Giant Above? There's a
song I'd love to see remixed.
How is the Anne Dudley/Jaz Coleman cd?
And finally...I love the talk of getting ZTT to release something, how
about we do something about it instead of just talking about it? ;o) Does
anyone know anyone at the label, etc? Could we draft a form letter to send
to them?--I think someone over there might take us seriously if they knew
about this list...
Thanks in advance,
jon

I think it might be time to close this off as a Morleyism. I dont think
there's a finished album or set of demos anywhere with that title. In
fact, I can't even remember where this rumour started.... I think it
might have been issued or stated by ZTT when Act split - that Claudia
would release P&P (on ZTT) and that Thomas Leer also had an album in the
pipeline for ZTT. I know I picked up on it somewhere and mentioned the
two titles in when I wrote the ZTT features in Record Collector mag back
in 1988...

Without doubt the most awesome album (unless you really just don't like
Asian / African music - the premise has Below The Waste written all over

If you're referring to _Songs From The Victorious City_, it's Arabic music
(egyptian to be specific), not Asian or African. Personally, I don't care for
it at all but my girlfriend at the time (an arabic) loved it.

Oh, I was just being general (the "Arabian" (Middle East) area being in
southwest Asia and northeast Africa). BTW I'm one of those too (an Arab
(note the abscence of the "ic")). I don't particularly like Arabic music,
being much more accustomed to Western music, but I think it's the fact
that Anne Dudley had her hands in the audio to blame for me liking the
album so much.
(Al Qahirah* - a rough English transliteration - is Arabic for "the
victorious city". It is called "Cairo" in English, the Egyptian city in
which the album was recorded (aside from the British city London).
With regards to the list count, there has GOT to be a simpler way - most
of the lists that I'm on even print the total number of subscribers at
the top of the digest. Surely the list admin can look at a file and
quickly determine the number of addresses (hence, the number of
subscribers) to which ztt messages are being sent. The worst case
scenario is that a small number of people who subscribe to both the
regular version and the digest version (such as myself) will be counted
as two people.
Another idea - make compilations ourselves, and then when ZTT threatens
us with a lawsuit, presto! We've established communication.
(That was not to be taken seriously, of course...)
Paul Morley: Was his being credited as a songwriter on the ZTT AoN
releases just a courtesy? Or did he really do studio work?
* The liner notes use the transliteration "Al Khihira", which doesn't
really sound right. But Arabic doesn't use a Latin alphabet, so there's
not really a right or wrong way to spell it in English (unless it's
obviously way off, like "Lewinsky".

Just thought I'd email the list to say that I think I found ZTT
colectors' nirvana this afternoon at Music & Video Exchange, Berwick

I went to their bargain basement and found thousends of 12"s and LPs all
for 1 pound each (less than a dollar?)... pretty useful as I had exactly
that to spend in my pocket. So imagine my joy when I found the 12" of
Quincy Jones Vs 808 State...! But then imagine my greater joy when I
decided not to buy it, in favour of a second find: Propaganda's A Secret
Wish LP - for just one pound - signed by both Claudia and Suzanne!

I managed to get the CD (Laughter, Tears and Rage) when it came out and
then came across the album in a record shop in Pasadena a couple years
ago and snatched it up because the album had tracks (or A track) NOT on

anyone know why they did this, i.e. put tracks on the album that didn't
end up on the CD?

Around the time that CDs started getting popular, it seemed that every
third album was coming out with "bonus tracks" only on the CD (and
sometimes on the cassette). I used to despise the practice (even though I
was still little at the time, I hated the eviction of 12" vinyl from the
marketplace). Nowadays, 60 minute CDs and double 12" LPs are the norm
(instead of truncated 12" LPs); but I always thought that if bonus tracks
are going to be thrown around, it should go both ways.
I did a few recordings in the late 80's and the intent was to have a
single, different bonus track on CD, 12", and cassette; as it so happens,
I never released anything on any format but cassette so my exercise was
pointless.
Long live the 12"!
Now: Some thoughts about terminology.
I always end up debating this issue with people and am curious to hear
you all's opinion on the matter.
"album" - any audio recording too long to be called an EP, synonymous
with "record" and "LP"
"twelve-inch single" - a single on 12" vinyl
"CD single" - a single on compact disc
an "album" can be on "twelve-inch vinyl", "compact disc (CD)", or
cassette
A lot of people imply that an "album" is specifically a 12" LP, but
considering that the term "album" came into use because old 78s were
usually multi-disc collections, "album" was a very appropriate term. But
still, even on single-disc compilations, an "album" represents a
collection of something (whereas a "single" generally does not). Same
goes for "LP", which is an acronym for "long-playing" (not to be confused
with the "EP" - "extended-play", which is not longer than an LP but an
extended-playing SINGLE).
Not to mention referring to a seven-inch record as a "45" - some 7"s are
to be played back at 33-1/3 rpm and many 12" singles are to be played
back at 45 rpm.
I doubt that I'll start using different terms after all these years, BUT
hopefully someone on this list who knows more than I do can help me to
set this straight.

I'm glad to see that someone else agrees with me about the term
"album." An album is a collection of "things"... thus terms like
"photo album." "Album" should be a generic term defined the way Jeff
has. Of course, if you want to get literal with the term, most 7"ers
could be albums too since there are usually 2 songs on them. ("Album"
doesn't imply any certain number.) But I think the term "album" in
reference to music is generally understood to be something of LP
length or greater.
I agree with the rest of Jeff's definitions as well. Here's one thing
that bugs me - the term "box set." The term should be "boxed set." A
box set is a set of boxes! See what I mean? It's not proper grammar.

Actually, you're forgetting the 1:20 long snippet of "Moments In Love"
on the end of side-B. That's the one with the different drum beat that
Enigma later ripped off.
Personally, I would like to see all things ZTT get re-mastered and
consequently re-released with ACCURATE playlistings and titles.
Furthermore, I would damn well hope that this time the opening dialog to
AON's "Love Beat" between Anne and (I think) Trevor is left intact. This
as much opposed to the "daft" compilation where it was renamed "Three
Fingers Of Love" and bore a dull fade-in intro.
I had heard a rumor, back at the 10th anniversary of "Who's Afraid",
that there was a surround sound encoded re-release being planned. Sadly,
this turned out to be wholly unfounded... What a pisser.
My real dream compilation would be a box set of every AON single
released stopping just ahead of the FON Mixes. The point to it would be
to include all B-side tracks and remixes (Arthur Baker's 7" & 12" mixes
of Dragnet, for example) all in a duplication of the original packaging
per disc. The only logical name for such a set would be "Bsides Asides".
It sounds rather dumb, yes, but it's actually an important play on it's
own verbage. The name, of course, reffers to A side & B side tracks but
also the function performed by them. B side tracks, for me, serve a
similar function as asides in classic theatre... not always essential to
the progress of the play, but, all the more to the defining of the moment
and/or atmosphere, theme, etc... Case in point: "Hoops & Mallets". No
real point in being there except to further impart their goal (at that
time) to produce songs of nearly pure atmosphere. "A Time To Hear (You're
Listening)" is another good example. Little fragments of their singles to
date in one song. Sort of like taking them back to the one jam session
from which everything evolved.

Actually the ZTT Switzerland EP is pretty weak. Strange combinations of
beats and samples and it's very rough sounding. I wouldn't suggest this on
a CD reissue.
If anyone like it I could easily make some MP3 samples of the disc and you
could decide for yourself.
The Switzerland 2 EP on the other hand is superb. Great synth sound and
nice long tracks.
My dream compiletion is intitled: ZTT Rare! And it's all Island-era rare

I recently picked up a copy of the Propaganda 1234 cd and was struck by a
couple of things:
1. The sound so completely differes from the previous album, even though
three of the four members are from the original line-up. I don't mean
just that Betsi's voice differs, but the whole sound; and
2. There is a note in the booklet that reads: "To Susanne Freytag: we miss
you," but there is no mention of Claudia, who, to my Claudia-loving ears,
was mostly responsible for the vocal quality of the first Propaganda album.
So I'm curious. Was there any animosity or anything between Claudia and
the other members of the band? AND when the "1234" album was released,
what was the word from the band about the severe difference in sound?
X0X0,
Dean
Damn, I'm itching for that new Propaganda material!!!

I probably have the same two incarnations (ZTT Polystar Japan PSCD 1178 and
ZTT/Warners 4509-94750-2; the latter says it was made in Germany). Was there
ever a version that actually had the catalog number ZCIDQ7, which was in
parentheses on the Japanese incarnation?
The difference between the two versions, if anyone is unaware, is that the
Japanese edition includes the bonus track "Like We Do."
Pigalle would be another of my "wish list" ZTT CD compilation artists. I
would love to get her 12" mixes on CD. (My vinyl 12" of "He Stranger" was
bought second-hand and sounds like hell...)
On another note: I and a few other list subscribers keep tossing out the
question "Who at ZTT should receive our pleas for more back-catalog to be
released on CD?" -- but I haven't seen an answer. Is there anyone at ZTT who
might actually read letters from label fans (as opposed to tossing them in
the trash)? Does anyone know if sending a letter would be simply a waste of
time -- or, if not, if there is a person in charge of "public relations" of
this sort?

The only *real* original member of Propaganda who is also a *real* member on
1234 is Mertens -- hence the radically different sound. Susanne's guest vox
and Doerper's lyrics aren't enough to really assure any continuity from the
original lineup.
The "new sound" makes much more sense if you take into account that a) two of
the new members are ex-Simple Minds and b) it was produced by Ian Stanley and
Chris Hughes of Tears For Fears fame. Hence a more directly pop-oriented,
more British-sounding product.

I thought she was the one who broke up the original lineup, wasn't she?

I've traded a little mail with someone at the label who may be the right

Bob Kraushaar is also a member. His name appears on "In.No.Sense?
Nonsense!" for certain mixing credits. I even noticed the presence of
Paul Robinson (drums) & Dave Bronze (bass) -whom appeared on the "In
Visible Silence" tour- on track 9: "Some Other Dream".
As far as singles go "West 4" was released about a month & a half
before the LP. There have been 1 or 2 subsequent remix singles since.
J.J. was even offering to release remixes done by fans. If you got a
first batch copy of the LP it was accompanied by a 3.5 floppy with an
effects program and -I think- components of the track "West 4" to make
your remixing endeavors easier. Really, pretty cool I thought. He even
has his personal E-Mail address on the disk. I, unfortunately, didn't get
a computer until this past November, fully a year too late.
Since then, J.J. has been running into some business troubles, it
seems. He lost his website (IRQ?) and any works have become harder to
find. There is a single called "Teach Me" that came out this past spring
or summer. Problem is I can't get my hands on the damn thing. I have
begun to wonder if there has been an album to coincide with the single,
but I just don't know. In this case silence is NOT golden.
As a matter of personal opinion, I greatly preffer J.J.'s solo work
over Anne's (I am not including her film scores as that would be an
unfair comparison). Of course, I'm a sucker for any song with a Farlight
CMI in it. And that's J.J.'s axe not hers.

I think it sounds more american than ASW, not exactly more British.

As far as I know, she left the band in '86 - they didn't exactly like
her choice of husband and, as Mertens one said, Claudia and the rest
of the group had grown apart. I was VERY surprised when Mertens and
Br=FCcken teamed up for the Brain single.

It seems that there were. I remember Michael Mertens saying in an

previous singer".
I think the new sound of 1234 (a lot of it a bit "adult" for my taste) may
be at least partly due to the Hughes/Stanley production team being very
involved musically. They have co-writing credits on some of the tracks,
don't they (I haven't looked at that inlay in a while)?

Sounds like Paul Morley and Anne Dudley to me - compare Paul's voice on
the Value of Entertainment video...

Well, when AoN played live on the Radio, exactly this sound happened
when they sampled the DJ in the interview for later use, so I guess it's
made by the Fairlight... Incidentally the sampled phrase was "Cabaret
Time", which became the title of the demo song on the JJJ sample CD.

According to an interview with JJJ in "Sound on Sound" when the album
came out, he had sold his series III Fairlight by then - he uses Akais
now!
Technically, AoS.co.uk is his second album, because a collection of his
trademark sounds was released on CD in 1992 for sampler owners to use in
their tracks...
It's called "jj jeczalik's art of sampling" (subtitled HitSound Producer
Series Volume 8) Catalogue No. HITCD12, but because you are licenced to
sample it, its pricey - I paid 50 pounds for mine, but I believe it's
still in stock at source (let me know if any of you want me to post
details).
There are 61 tracks (!), the first of which is a demo song "Cabaret
Time" which is made entirely from some of the samples on the rest of the
CD, (produced by Lee Groves)
The complete track list fills 6 pages of the inlay booklet, so I shall
just give you a little taster (unless some of the hardcore discographers
out there really want it in full - mail me privately)...
Tracks 28 & 29 are titled "Misc. Percussion"
(Track 28 consists of 18 samples, described as)
Metal Srcape 1-2
Chick Chock Shake
Triangulong
Triangushort
Deep Triange Long/Short
Windchimes 1-2
Bell 1-2
Shake my little Bells
Castanets
Ambient Clap 1-2
Clave 1-2
Ambient Clap Percussion
...and so on, and on, and on...
Many AoNish classic sounds are there, and it's fun to spot where he used
them / found them - Fairlight aahs, "Tom Jones Fly" from Kiss, "Unedited
Drum Fill" from the intro of Owner of a Lonely Heart, "Holly Hooowah"
lifted from Relax, etc., and the packaging has lots of photos of JJJ
with the AoN Masks, (and the Mona Lisa wearing one on the front), and a
very silly track sheet for "Peter Gunn" is in the booklet too (Track 14
of the master tape is aparrently used for Drum Fills, Juggler and Mime
Artist, Track 9 is "Aled+Choir, Clave, Table Tennis).

listening and reading some of the posts recently about Claudia i
remember sitting with her after the Act gig in Nottingham where she
spoke about her forthcoming solo album which surfaced as love and a
million some time later. She told me she had sent ideas lyrics etc.
to various people she wanted to work with these included David
Sylvian (what a track that would have been!) and Prince!
The Act gig was odd.. Morley was there and the audience numbered
about 100, 50p to get in. I thought i`d got there late and rushed in
during the soundcheck where i was able to stand alone whilst Claudia
belted out "i can`t escape ". During the gig when she did "heaven
knows i`m miserable now" she handed out white roses to lucky people
from the stage. I do remember they were much better live than the way
the songs emerged on the record. They started with Bloodrush and
ended with "nights of germany". I went to the gig the next night in
London which was better and full and managed to tape it but it was
poor quality and i can not find it.
best wishes
Dave Felstead.

Hmmm... The UK CD of The Beating Of Wings (from the first time around -
the mid-eighties) is CID 127, which I guess marks it down as from part
of a Island Records UK set of early CD album releases...?

Wasn't there also a very prominent "Cabaret Time" vocal stab in one of
the many Fairlight-heavy Scritti Politti B-sides from Cupid & Psyche?
Just a co-incidence?

hi
I found this on the UK-dance ML:
----------------------
Has anyone heard the shocking Jungle remix of 808 State's 'Pacific
202'. I may not be as old skool as some folk on this list but I still
think it's a total rip-off of a classic tune which you just shouldn't
do. I think putting a crap breakbeat on such a masterpiece and
re-releasing it is just not on. At least when the Fugee's and
Blackstreet got their tunes ripped the people who did them made a
little effort.

Questions:
1 Has anyone heard this?
2 Is it a booty or at least Pacific samples on some others record?
3 Or is it the claimed new mixes for the 808 compilation?
Comment:
I don't like the reissue/remix of vintage 808 State. Please don't look
like a money-machine lads.

Let's allow our willing suspension of disbelief to include the possibility
that ZTT has an interest in creating a CD format box set. I know it's a
stretch, but go there for just a moment. The first thing they (ZTT execs,
marketing people, distributors, engineers, etc.) are going to focus on has got
to be purpose. Is this box set going to consist of product which tells "The
Entire Story From Beginning to End"? Or is it going to be a "Fill In the
Blanks" release of all ZTT product not already available in the CD format?
In the case of the former, the all-inclusive track listing clearly reaches
prohibitive proportions. To include all tracks, all versions and the "in
studio conversation" snipplets many of us are including on our own wish lists
would involve a multi-multi disc, DVD format box set which (if purchased by
everyone in Madonna's worldwide built in audience) would barely allow them to
break even on the production costs. Not only that, but the intended market
for such a product would drop members in exponential quantities as soon as it
was realized that what they're being asked to pay for is a lot of esoterica
they have no interest in owning. Personally, I would disagree with those who
would argue against the value of owning such product, though it must be
admitted that the presence of their arguement would translate to a decision
not to buy -- which would impact ZTT decisions to include it. (At 74:00 min
per CD, four or five CD's alone could be filled with the versions of the FGTH
"Relax" piece.)
With that in mind, the logical alternative seems to be a focus on filling in
the blanks created by product that has not yet (will never?) be commercially
available in the CD format. Here again, you're still looking at bumping
multiple versions of quite a few songs up to the CD format; a body of work
major-market audiences have historically poo-poo -ed at the cash register. I
can see where songs like "P-Machinery" (which has a 9:00min, 11:00min and a
03:00min mix on the original 12" -- none of which [please! correct me if I'm
wrong!!!] ever made it to commercial CD) would have to fall under an axe where
inclusion decisions are concerned. In this case, I think we're all in
agreement: "Whatever you do, DON'T include the 03:00min mix and move onto the
next decision."
Moving forward. If there ever is to be some kind of a ZTT box set made, ZTT
has at their disposal a solid group of individuals who are both accessible to
them and are truly dedicated "fans" -- of their ENTIRE body of work. The
decisions of what to include could definitely be made intelligently by polling
that group of people. (By the way, that group of people is US!)
So this mythical CD comes out. Obviously we (and quite a few others around
the world who aren't blessed with lifestyles that incluide home computers) buy
it. And so do other music fans; and computer owners who don't dabble in
UseNet, discussion groups or email; and collectors, etc. For the most part,
we're happy. But still there is a substantial selection of surplus product
that didn't make it to the release version of the box set. My question
involves *that* subset of product.
Do you suppose we could get permission to distribute those cuts amongst
ourselves on CD? I mean, the ZTT people are artists first, then
entrepreneurs. We understand they have limited bank accounts and we also
understand the marketing decisions which would prohibit them from re-
distributing these cuts on CD. If we were to burn a few CD masters and sell
off copies (at cost -- or even at a small profit which would enthusiastically
include them in a generous percentage) would this be possible? Knowing that
this is something they wouldn't do themselves, and understanding that the
distribution channels would be limited to their true fans, I don't see why
they would have a problem allowing us to do this. It's not like we would be
cutting into profits they would otherwise be entitled to or otherwise be
making themselves, right?
I have a CD burner and most of the product I've seen tossed around in the
"wish list" discussion thread. For the record, I'd be willing to look into
such a project, but it would have to be with ZTT's permission and hopefully
with their blessing. I am ultimately respectful of them and the LAST thing I
could sleep with at night would be thoughts of knowing that those I admire
have a bad taste in their mouth about me.
Waddya think, group?? Is it worth pursuing? Or is there something I'm
missing here? Please respond on-line (to the group) because I need group
concensus to consider this any further. . . And I *am* considering it!! (also
for the record -- so to speak.)

Sam and other members of the group:
I for one would support you in your attempts to put out a ZTT
collector's CD. I realize it's easy for me to sit here and type this
because I know that none of the work and responsibility would
ultimately be mine. I've been collecting any and all ZTT material I
could get my hands on for years and would be one of the first to step
up to the cash register if any compilation of rarities came up.
Personally, I hope your suggestion gets lots of favorable responses.
Cheers,

Not gonna re-post the original post or any portion thereof 'cause I'm
sure everyone read it... Simple response though - I'm all for it
(suggested an "internal release - just among ourselves). As far as ZTT
releases go - how about a box set with many (not necessarily all) of the
tracks not available on CD. Perhaps it could even be pared down to
include no more than two versions of any given song, that way there
wouldn't be TOO many discs and of course, the retail price would be
lower.
I don't remember if WaxTrax's "Black Box" anniversary set sold all that
well, but it was well promoted, and even though I didn't listen to any
WaxTrax artists other than KMFDM, I still shelled out $45 for the three
CD set.
