Speaking of Art of Silence, looks like they lost their domain
name. Any idea if they moved that (awful) web site to a new
location?

Subject: (ztt) No Sh**! NEW AON ALBUM COMING!!
Date: 11 Aug 1997 22:07:55 -0700
Sorry for my harsh language but read this news I just picked off of Lol
Creme's web site http://www.lolster.com/
**************
Currently, Lol is working on a new musical project with record producer
Trevor Horn. Trevor has brought Anne Dudley and Paul Morley together
again and the four of them are producing a new Art Of Noise album. As
well as doing the music, Lol is responsible for the visuals. There will
be long and short form videos and adaptations for the web and all the
multimedia formats that are worth playing with. Recordings have been
going on for the past 18 months both at Trevor's studios in Oxfordshire
and in London and the first single will be completed here in Los Angeles
over the summer months. The album will hopefully be released this
Christmas.
The musical idea behind the album is to fuse the modern "drum and bass"
rhythms coming out of London with adaptations of songs written by
classical composer Claude Debussy at the turn of this century. One of
the visual ideas is to bring to life the Black Lady, a character who
regularly appears in Lol's artwork, as the virtual lead vocalist, Miss
Euphoria Bliss! She is currently being built in three dimensions in the
computer and will be animated by a new motion capture system, which is
today's state-of-the-art technology and is still very much in
development.
On the website front, serious R&D (research and development) is
underway. We would like the medium to broadcast moving pictures and a
variety of sounds and music but the technology is still in it's infancy
and it will take time before full motion, high-quality pictures + good
quality music can be made easily and cheaply available. However, we will
update the site in any interesting way we can within the limitations of
the medium.
************
Needless to say, I'm really excited. I'm especially glad to hear they
are in L.A. finishing the album. Maybe I'll run into them!
Trevor finally got around to that Debussy project he's been talking
about since...geez, wasn't it that interview with Newsweek back in 83 or
84?
I guess J.J.'s not involved. But I think that's OK because he's more
into the progressive-house thing with his Art Of Silence.
Now, where's Gary Langan at?!
-Mark
P.S. I did hear that Seal was seen at the Virgin Megastore in Hollywood
last week. BTW, he has a new album that is supposed to be out by the
end of this year as well but I haven't heard many details.

Date: 15 Aug 1997 21:19:35 -0700
I don't think this has been discussed before, but haven't you always
wondered what those samples were playing in the background of Violet on
Seal's first album? Well, I certainly have, but up until today I've
never really been able to make any of them out. For some reason, while
listening to the CD with headphones at work, I heard the first passage
at around 2:45. Needless to say I was stunned when I realized that it
was from Back To The Future. I think it's the first one, but I'm not
positive. Maybe it's the 3rd. I dunno. It's just weird to hear Doc
and Marty talking. They say something like: "I shouldn't have come! I
was supposed to die back there, but I didn't. It would have affected
time. Don't worry....<something>...that I'm not like anyone else."
Well, if someone knows this scene or has the movie, I'd like to hear it
all. It's hard to make out in the song.
Anyone recognize any of the other clips in the track?
AON excited,
Mark Wasiel

While browsing a table at a record show last weekend, I came upon the 3-CD
Art Of Noise Box set (includes FON Mixes, Ambient Collection, & Drum/Bass
Collection). It came in a silver tri-fold package and cost $32.
I am utterly amazed at the depths China will sink to in order to make money
from AON's back catalogue. Talk about silly. Not only were the three
discs unremarkable when they were first released (IMHO), Drum & Bass was
just released a little bit ago. A bit too soon to include it in a box set
I should think.
Needless to say, I didn't pick it up. Oh well, let's keep our fingers
crossed for NEW Art Of Noise material.
COMING SOON FROM CHINA: The Drum & Bass Anniversary CD release! That's
right - celebrate the 6 month release of Art Of Noise's Drum & Bass
Collection with this brand new release! Completely different catalog
number! Don't pass this up! <grin>

I was also surprised when I saw this one come through... It's only
saving grace is that (in the UK at least) it will retail at the same
price as a standard CD, so anyone that hasn;t investigated the mixes
series can listen to them all for minimal cost.
Those that have bought the originals shouldn't be
disheartened as now that State Of The Art (the box set) is now out
all the original remix LPs will be deleted...

I don't know what you're referring to in the specific, but Zimmer *was*
involved with the soundtracks to Toys and Insignificance, the former of which
was a TCH production and latter of which was issued on ZTT . . .
To be fair, none of the Woolley/Buggles releases I have give *any* useful

Subject: (ztt) 808 State US album
Date: 19 Aug 1997 13:40:56 -0400
Hello everyone. Well, I must tell everyone about the US 808 State album.
I received 2 copies in the mail today from the Cleopatra promotion company.
The first cd is in a hard jewel case. The cover is the same as the UK,
but it is a much darker red. The UK sleeve is more reddish brown. It has
a big 808 butterfly logo at the bottom of the front cover and 808 State Don
Solaris below that. The words and logo are white. Thats the only
difference between the US and UK sleeves. The back cover is the same
picture as one of the pictures in the UK sleeve. Fig. 4: Repair. The
booklet is not as big, but it has a few pictures and the track listing.
The cd is the same except it has ZTT logo and the Hypnotic logo on it. No
bonus tracks! Sorry. I wish too.
The second cd is a paperboard album! Same cover, but it says at the top
:Featuring vocal performances by members of Soul Coughing & Manic Street
Preachers. The back cover is all brown. No pic. sleeve on the back. This
one may be a promo copy because it says at the bottom of the back cover:
808 State Don Solaris "The forthcoming Hypnotic Recordings Release".
However, it has the same catalog numbers as the other cd which is CLP
0094-2. Its a really cool album and everyone should pick it up!
Cheers, Josh

Toys was of course issued on ZTT in the UK, but something that's
always intrigued me are discography entries for the album which have
a very different track listing to that issue (more orchestral score?)?
Spotted something about it on hans zimmer's www site some time ago I
think. Does anyone have the definitive word on this?

I suspect that Zimmer's site is listing all the songs that were used in the
movie, not just the ones on the soundtrack album. The catalog number listed
on the site is the stock US CD release, which as far as I know is identical to
the UK one.
As part of looking for the site I ran across a number of sites that credit
Zimmer as producer of "The Age Of Plastic" and one interview in which he
claims flat out to have been a member of the band. All news to me, but like I
said, none of my Buggles releases have any meaningful credits on them. He
also mentions being an assistant to Stanley Myers of "Insignificance"
relevance, of course.

For what it's worth, my copy of "Adventures in Modern Recording" on vinyl has
rather complete credits. Hans Zimmer doesn't appear to have been part of
the band back in 1981: TCH and John Sinclair/Geoff Downes have the production
credits, and such common Zang players as Anne Dudley, Gary Langan, Louis
Jardim, Bruce Wooley and Simon Darlow also show up in the credits.
My guess, if Zimmer claimed to be a member of "the band", he was greatly
overstating his presence.

Nice to see the Promo Items section at the bottom of the discography,
I thought I'd add some info on some interesting bits and pieces
I have accumulated over the years...
ZTT Ten (promo long sleeve t-shirt) - this was given away
free to partygoers at ZTT's Tenth Anniversary party in 1993. Round
Z logo on the front, ZTT TEN on the back. Very stylish. I still
wear it!
ZTT Ten (promo paper bag) if memory serves correctly, the t-sirts
weregiven away in the paper bag, which also included a copy of Zance.
The A-Z of ZTT (a four page biography I wrote in '92) was to be used
on the sides of the bag or as an insert, but this was shelved due
to funding problems...
Promo Posters - I also came away with a few 'extra' items from the
ZTT Ten party... The foyer to the club was covered in ZTT promo
posters and - in my drunken state at the end of the night - I
decided to take them home with me (not too difficult as being one
of the last to leave, there were few people about, and most thought
I was tidying up!) I came away with various posters including
hugh 5ftx3ft ones for Prayer For The Dying, Crazy, Relax, Welcome
TTP, Gorgeous and smaller ones for Honky, Tara, MC Tunes, Seal
Live at the Point etc..
The Crazy poster is especially interesting as it has an address label
stuck to the back - having been sent from WEA to Seal himself, C/O
SARM!
Bang! (small red promo stickers used to promote the Relax re-issue)
ZTT also had these platestered around London and few a few weeks
they were highly visible.
FGTH logo badges (replicas of the front of the Greatest Hits cover)
before these appeared in the Power Of Love box set, several thousand
were made up for general promo use.

Subject: (ztt) Anne Pigalle, Where Are You?

After too many months away from the ZTT list, I'm back with a request.
Every six months or so I throw the following question out like a desperate
message in a bottle, hoping someone new will see it and be able to provide
me with some information:
Whatever happened to Anne Pigalle?
I loved her ZTT album "Everything Could Be So Perfect" and the two 12"
singles ("Why Does It Have To Be This Way" and "He Stranger"). But what has
she done since then? Anything? Did she change careers? Join a group? Retire
to a French villa?
And is there a direct e-mail address for ZTT itself, where I might be able
to ask someone at the label?
I would love to find out if there are any other albums or singles by her,
but she seems to have dropped off the face of the earth after 1985.
Also: Were CD versions of her 12" singles ever released? I have both of them
on vinyl (although I do have her album on CD).
Thanks!

Uh...why do I have the feeling that my leg is being pulled? (File under
"this news sounds way too good to be anywhere near true.")
