  10. ned  AFRIKA BAMBAATAA,first.) ,my latest favorit is NINJA TUNE.

  29.  Howdy all, Happy New Year!  I thought I should share this with everyone.  I
  30. received a true rare record from a great friend of mine today named Lionel
  31. who lives in South Africa.  He sent me the 1984 South African 12" release of
  32. Dr. Mabuse.  It is the same as the UK 12" because it has the black
  33. "zeppelin" picture sleeve with the band members on it, but this 12" playes
  34. at 45 rpm's not 33 like all the others.  It is licensed under "Priority
  35. Records", ZTT and Island.

  37.  You don't hear much about South African releases so I know this one is a
  38. real treasure!  Thanks Lionel!

  79. the Bond cd single.  I swear I read it somewhere, but can't recall
  80. where.

  94.  So everyone knows, there are two bonus tracks of Bonded and Chisler on the
  95. 808 State JP cd album "Don Solaris".  Everything about this JP cd is the
  96. same, accept the JP has a lyric booklet, and the cd has a gold tint to it
  97. not like the UK cd which is silver.  If your a true hardcore 808 collector
  98. like myself, pick it up for your collection, but its not really worth paying
  99. all the money for it since the UK edition is so similar.

  123. ZTT's new south London R&B five-piece Public Demand will be launched in 
  124. February on the back of substantial airplay on TV channel The Box. Their debut 
  125. single Invisible, which is due for release on February 3, is among the 
  126. channel's most 
  127. played new tracks. The band have been supporting East 17 on their December tour 
  128. and are currently in the studio with producer Trevor Horn working on new 
  129. material.  
  130. Horn says Invisible instantly made him want to work with Public Demand. "I

  132. really liked that song and they've been coming on in leaps and 
  133. bounds," he says. "I think their songs have more depth than a lot of the  
  134. R&B that's around at the moment."

  243. album and radio edit, and the U.S. commercial release had an
  244. instrumental and one of the versions from the promo (probably the
  245. edit).  The best reason to have one of these is to avoid the rest of the

  300. Relax pressing was one of the few exceptions.)

  344. I have another single from them called "Don't Believe The Hype", from last
  345. autumn.  It was on a label called Slackerbitch Partnership; having cat.no.
  346. THROW 1CD coming in a double sleeve like the last 808 ones.
  347. The music goes in the direction of alternative/indie-rock, although it's got a
  348. pretty clean, yet hard, sound.
  349. I bought this, because a friend told me about a note in NME around that time
  350. announcing this single to come out on ZTT.  When I got it, I tought that it
  351. might
  352. a) have nothing to do with ZTT
  353. b) be on a new (sub-)label of Paul Morley
  354. c) get a hit, if it were 3 years earlier

  357. Oh yes - there are two more hints:  I think it was _not_ distributed by
  358. Warner, and the sleeve was very mysterious having a "Note 1: ..." on it, which

  431. I have been on a wild goose chase for years I fear.  Someone in CA told me
  432. that a cd single exists for "Close (to the edit)" but I fear not.
  433.  
  434. Well, as technology progresses, and new formats come and go, I decided to
  435. get a DAT and CDR and made my own disc.  Unfortunately, learning a piece of
  436. new computer hardware and dealing with something that's nowhere near as
  437. easy as recording to audio cassette or DAT, I've managed to press 4 copies
  438. of my "Art of noise stuff not on cd".  I have 2 of  v1.0  and 1 v2.0
  439.  
  440. Why these others and why am I looking to sell to recoup my losses on media cost?
  441.  
  442. There's a process called "normalizing" which is supposed to ideally boost
  443. VU level without distorting, but it also boosts crackle noise.  I had to
  444. resample the whole dat, and did not normalize for v2.0  It's better than
  445. v1.0 and better than any cassette copy you could ever make, or bootleg, but
  446. note all tracks are from VINYL so there is that crackling.  When possibly I
  447. enlarged the waveform and manually removed the most annoying 'pops'.
  448.  
  449. The original process:  recorded my vinyl onto a portable DAT at 48khz, ran
  450. through professional audiocraft mixing board and added a 1k tone at the
  451. top, so I could re-dub the DAT and get all the levels for every track to
  452. agree, equalized sound when possible.  End result:  a nice DAT copy
  453.  
  454. Next: sampling down to 44.1khz and editing beginning and ends of tracks for
  455. fade ins and outs to sound more natural.
  456.  
  457. Here's the tracklisting (18 tracks/over 72 mins):

  467. basically a little sampler of album tracks and some weird lady and parakeet

  470. 10. Close Up (hop)  5:10  (radical remix which sounds more like beatbox,
  471. complete with screaming, pitch bends, and tempo changes)

  571. With regards to ZTT releases in South Africa, initiated by my friend Josh '808 
  572. Guru' Bortz : The initial burst of FGTH singles, as well as the sole Propaganda
  573. ZTT single release ('Das Testament Des Mabuse'), were issued on 7'' and 12''. 
  574. 'Rage Hard', 'Wecome to the Pleasuredome' and 'Warriors of the Wasteland' were 
  575. each issued as two different 12'' releases apiece, while 'Relax' and 'Two 
  576. Tribes', as well as '... Mabuse' were only issued once.
  577.  
  578. The 7'' editions came on plain white sleeves, while the 12'' editions sported
  579. thick album-type sleeves (complete with Morley sleeve notes) and with white 
  580. 'Home taping is killing music' paper inners. The norm for SA MAXIs (as we call
  581. them is 33 rpm, but surprisingly '... Mabuse' spun around at 45 rpm. Both
  582. FGTH albums were released here, as was the Propaganda one. 
  583.  
  584. These singles are collectible for a number of reasons : These were never
  585. re-issued, the distributor (Priority) went bang in the late 80s, and very
  586. few copies were ever sold. Since the late 80s distribution has been taken
  587. over by Tusk Music and i have actually seen 'Welcome ...' (the album) issued
  588. on Tusk/WEA/ZTT. The ZTT label was never present on the original disc labels 
  589. (whichsported day/night 'Island' designs), but were printed on the front
  590. sleeve.
  591.  
  592. I have seen a couple of FGTH singles around recently, but they are quite  
  593. rarely seen. As with releases in other territories, much confusion abounds
  594. about the mix/song titles. '... Mabuse', for instance, lists different titles
  595. on the sleeve front, label and spine. Incidentally, the rarest releases would
  596. be copies of the 'Welcome ...' album by FGTH which were printed in SA and
  597. shipped to South West Africa. The sleeves were apparently restamped with the 
  598. legend 'Product of South West Africa'. The country is of course now known as
  599. Namibia'.

  601. Sjoe ! I hope that wasn't too boring. BTW i also have a UK 12'' by Visage 
  602. called 'Beat Boy'. The rear sleeve says 'Fairlight programming by JJ,
  603. courteousy of ZTT' I've never seen this item discussed at ZTT yet.

  632. Just a short note this time. The recent (or not so) JP releases 'Bombadin',
  633. 'Forecast', 'Don Solaris' and 'Thermo Kings' all contain bonus tracks/mixes 
  634. pulled from UK singles. Has WEA Japan (formerly WEA Music) stopped the issueing
  635. of CD singles ? Essentially you do not have to buy the single CDs if you have 
  636. the JP issues, but you'd actually like to have the choice ! I'd find it very
  637. surprising of 'Lopez' was indeed released as a JP single CD as the appearance
  638. on TWO albums would already have diluted possible sales !

  908. Drum & Bass aside, I always have distaste for a project that obliterates
  909. the source material.  I've read so many published reviews over the last
  910. week for this album, with quotes along the lines of "...a new generation
  911. of dj's paying respect to...".  Respect to what?  To be a fan of AoN and
  912. then go off in a totally different direction is not the issue.  But to
  913. take the title and a stray sample, add a bone-crushing bass signal, and
  914. forget to turn off the drum machine hardly qualifies as a remix, much
  915. less respect for the original artist or material.  This to me is what is
  916. "horrid" about this album.  That and paying $25 for the import when I
  917. could have only wasted $13 had I known it would actually get released in
  918. the U.S.!
  919.  
  920. Regardless of where the dj's are coming from on this album, I see CHINA
  921. as just taking economic advantage over a library they control, and have
  922. added absolutely nothing to the AoN mythology.  This album in no way
  923. follows in the footsteps of the Youth or FON projects, which though
  924. flawed in places, never let the listener forget just who the original
  925. (and better) programmers were!  I will admit that there are a couple of
  926. pretty good D&B tracks on this album, but never in a million years will
  927. I think of them as AoN songs.

  954. I agree 100%.  "Remixes" (if you can call them that) these days have
  955. absolutely nothing to with the original songs.  Sometimes they're not even
  956. in the same genre (some of the new Tori Amos remixes are pretty much
  957. hard-core techno, and are nothing like the originals).  I used to look
  958. forward to buying the 12" or CD5 of a new song that I liked, and now I know
  959. that most of the time it will be a waste of my money.  Remixes with names
  960. like "The Dope-Ass Techno Vertigo Slam Mix" don't particularly do anything
  961. for me.  Basically they are 13 minute loops of the same 6 second drum
  962. pattern with the first four words of the chorus repeated over and over.
  963. And they call it a remix.  Try calling it "My new song with a minor sample
  964. from a group everyone knows and loves, and because of that, I'll be able to
  965. make some cash off the the original band that actually had TALENT, even
  966. though I have none".
  967.  
  968. I just bought the US "Drum And Bass" mixes, and I'll also have to agree,
  969. they are terrible.  Just repetitive junk.  What happened to remixes like
  970. "Warriors (Monopoly Re-Solution)" and Propaganda's "Jeweled".  You got the
  971. feeling the songs were "re-crafted" not regurgitated.  Oh well, I guess
  972. I'll have to face the fact that those days are over, but I don't have to
  973. like it.

  984. Same here.  Its one thing to have someone like Trevor remix a song for
  985. Frankie or Grace Jones, it's another to have a complete third party that is
  986. interested in neither the original sound of the work nor the feel of the
  987. work to record a new song without any semblance of the old one and tack the
  988. artist's name on it.  And to top it all off, when the remixer is not nearly
  989. as talented as the original band, it really stinks.  Oh well.  Just my $.02

  1005. I think the Drum & Bass remix CD is the best "Art of" Series yet.  The
  1006. last remix album was much worse in comparison (sans that Prodigy remix).

  1008. Of course, if you don't like Drum & Bass, then it doesn't matter how
  1009. good the mixes are.

  1011. I happen to like Drum & Bass and I think this CD is a little above
  1012. average.  The mixes are 3/4 good to OK with the last 1/4 (approx.
  1013. naturally) being a bit weak (most of the last part of the album).

  1207. I think what made the mixes back then so interesting was there really was
  1208. no "scheme".  Each remix was unique (and as Mark pointed out in a previous
  1209. post, there were exceptions).  The mixes reflected the flavor and character
  1210. of the original song, and some time and effort was taken to create an
  1211. interesting rework that really enhanced the song.  Now, the general feeling
  1212. is "What?  You've never heard the original song?  That's OK, just put some
  1213. beats together and we'll give you a 3 second sample of the song.  That'll
  1214. be fine, just get it done quickly so we can sell as many copies as
  1215. possible."  And again, ZTT was just as guilty of trying exploit the idea of
  1216. remixes (remember the big fights over Relax and its 45 versions <G>) as the
  1217. the big labels now.  But, I still think some time and effort went into
  1218. mixes back then, and that simply doesn't exist now (again, there are
  1219. exceptions).

  1248. ZEAL 1 is not really the start of a new series, but a custom catalogue number
  1249. usually assigned when an artist reaches 'superstar' status. It is by no means
  1250. a novel exercise, as ZTT have previously assigned FGTH1 thru FGTH4 catalogue
  1251. numbers to their 1994 series of Frankie remixes. In the UK many artists have
  1252. had records issued in custom catalogue numbers, notably Bruce Springsteen 
  1253. (CBS BOSS), NKOTB (CBS BLOCK) and Spandau Ballet (Chrysalis SPAN). It does
  1254. however make the records very desirable. English goth-rockers New Model Army
  1255. (who teemed up with ageing ZTT favourite Tom Jones on 'Gimme Shelter') have
  1256. had a complete run of UK chart singles with catalogue numbers NMA1 through NMA12
  1257. Of course the coolest ZTT-related catalogue number has to be that assigned to
  1258. the 808 State 'Ex:el' promo CD - ZTT SAM 808, though the 808 mixed 'King Of
  1259. Comedy' comes a close

  1301. What is the purpose of the remix? In the eighties, all formats added 
  1302. to the charts figures - if you sold lots of 12"s you got a good chart 
  1303. record. In other words, if you had more different format with 
  1304. different mixes, you could get higher up on the charts and, as a 
  1305. result of this, sell even more records. Nowadays you can't "use"  all 
  1306. formats - maximum 4 (css, cd1, cd2, 12" for example)  will be 
  1307. "counted" for the charts. 
  1308.  
  1309. Another way to sell lots of records is to get the records played at 
  1310. clubs and discos - so you try to make remix  that works on the 
  1311. dancefloor and that is in fashion. Neil Tennant of PSB once said 
  1312. (when asked about their boring dance remixes (this was circa 1993-4)) 
  1313. something like: We want our records to be played at discos. They 
  1314. didn't play our old extended mixes (which, at least here in Sweden, 
  1315. is/was true), but they play our new mixes (also true - at least in 
  1316. Sweden).

  1318. I miss the old kind of extended remixes, but I think that they were 
  1319. part of the 80s dance culture. It's the nineties, and (unfortunately) 
  1320. this is what people seem to want to dance to.

  1400. I agree, they put much more effort in catalysing the original song, stressing
  1401. it's strengths and maintaining the initial character.  And that was often good.
  1402. But that doesn't imply doing the opposite is automatically bad, IMHO.

  1404. Today the borders between artists/remixers/producers have virtually been
  1405. vanished.  This means, listening to a song from A remixed by B, is often more
  1406. like a song from B (with legalized sampling from A).
  1407. But what it comes down to at the end is whether you like a given track or not.
  1408. That's the same as ever.  I also agree there's a lot of crap out there - and a
  1409. lot of superfluous remixes of originally good songs.  But the opposite is also
  1410. the case (good remixes from bad songs).

  1412. So I'd say current remixing habits _itself_ aren't bad, but it's a pitty that
  1413. old style extending isn't additionally continiued.

  1498. So I went out and bought the new Drum & Bass album, primarily because of
  1499. this discussion. Here's my river of consciousness feelings as I listen
  1500. to it for the first time. I'm not a reviewer, but I've listened to AON
  1501. since I first bought "Into Battle" by accident back in 1983 (God, can it
  1502. almost be 15 years!):

  1504. Track 1: Something Always Happens
  1505. Not bad, has a lot of the original's flavour. Starts off pretty weird,
  1506. but about halfway through pulls in more of the original tune and gets
  1507. better. Slow and quiet, the way it should be done with this song. Has
  1508. the cool "The Art of Noise is WEIRD!" sample; gotta love that.
  1509.  
  1510. Track 2: Ode to Don Jose
  1511. Rename this track to "Oh, it's so Crappe".  [Pause]. Sorry had to go
  1512. throw up. Quote in album blurb says "Expect the unexpected". Should read
  1513. "Expect the unexciting". Lots of bass and hi-hat percussion. Recording
  1514. level is pretty bad on this; I nearly blew out my computer speakers on
  1515. those high, tinny beats. Let's see, how do I program this off the play
  1516. list....

  1518. Track 3: Art of Love
  1519. Ooh, I'm going back in time. Heavy samples from the end of "In No Sense,
  1520. Nonsense!" which always moves me to tears because it's so sad and always
  1521. struck me as the AON's compline / farewell. It's not bad, but darn it, I
  1522. want to pull out "In No Sense, Nonsense!" again...
  1523.  
  1524. Track 4: Yebo
  1525. Torn on this one; not close to original, but not bad in its own unique
  1526. way. Very ethereal, if it lost the dominant drum line, you could play it
  1527. on an X-Files episode. Some good bongo samples from "Camilla" and the
  1528. "heh heh" laughs from Yebo. Too much gratuitous drum machine near the
  1529. end; it's like come on guys, we've all heard drum machines before and
  1530. it's not impressive when I can program MIDI tracks like this on my PC
  1531. over lunch.
  1532.  
  1533. Track 5: Opus 4
  1534. Looooong (9:20). More ethereal lead-in and a great ZTT "dreamy" line (is
  1535. this from a Fairlight? Sorry, I'm not really a hardware guy.) Develops
  1536. into a drum line, but not as gratuitous as #4; more melody here. Only
  1537. wish is that they'd left it a little more ethereal and ignored the "Drum
  1538. and Bass" theme; it does detract from the song near the end. Granted, if
  1539. you love to sit at home on your deck, drink port and smoke cigars while
  1540. thinking about life, this track ain't too bad.

  1542. Track 6: Island
  1543. Hard to describe. Too much repetitive drum machine. I skipped this track
  1544. about halfway through; don't think I missed much. Seiji, the mixer,
  1545. basically loops the same 6 seconds over and over and over and...
  1546.  
  1547. Track 7: Camilla, The Old Old Story
  1548. I expected a lot from this. Kudos for incorporating a fair number of
  1549. samples and melodies from the original. Lots of drum machine, but not
  1550. absolutely overwhelming. I wasn't excited by what I heard, but I wasn't
  1551. turned off or pissed off.
  1552.  
  1553. Track 8: Kiss
  1554. Great opening with warped Tom Jones lyrics and an "outer space" melody.
  1555. After a bit of this, it takes off with some funky beats that you know
  1556. Warren Miller will be stealing for a ski segment this year. Stands
  1557. pretty good on its own. I was very pleased with this mix. If you were
  1558. going to drive a big old Cadillac down the street in a tough gang
  1559. neighbourhood, this is the soundtrack you'd play.
  1560.  
  1561. Track 9: Eye of a Needle
  1562. More damned drum machine, but the rhythm is one of those "groovy" beats
  1563. Yello has a lot (I almost expected them to break in with that deep voice
  1564. going on about "Those legs. Those eyes. I couldn't stop looking even as
  1565. I died." Lots of the 1950's-esque xylophone percussion in the
  1566. background. Some great horns as well. Pretty good; I like this one.
  1567.  
  1568. Track 10: Peter Gunn
  1569. Utterly bastardised by "Flyright". Total desecration of an incredible
  1570. song. Worth scratching your CD just to skip this shit. Doesn't sound
  1571. anything like Peter Gunn; in fact I'll bet these Flies in the Ointment
  1572. just shipped back some crap they had lying around the studio. Liner
  1573. notes say they're 19-years-old, I say they have a lot of learning to do
  1574. here. There's mixing, extending, and outright ignoring the source
  1575. material. This is the latter and a complete waste. I was hoping for good
  1576. things from this as I've always like Peter Gunn (have the 7" picture
  1577. disk for this one; way cool). Absolutely, 100% disappointing. Do you get
  1578. the feeling yet that I hate this track?

  1580. Track 11: Crusoe
  1581. Did I say lots of drum machine? Once they get past the intro, and
  1582. introduce the (sampled) melody line, it gets much less abrasive.
  1583.  
  1584. Sum:
  1585. I'll listen to this album again and enjoy it, but not before I program a
  1586. few tracks off the playlist. I know it's the Drum & Bass album, but
  1587. there's just too much blatant drum machine crap in these mixes; that was
  1588. ok in the early 80s when drum machines were new and cool, but come on.
  1589. Some of these mixers need to learn about a melody line...
  1590.  
  1591. The other beef I have with these remixes is how repetitive they are.
  1592. There's a lot of looping on some of these songs. Even "modern" mixes are
  1593. not this repetitive (witness the "Trouser Enthusiasts' Adventures Beyond
  1594. the Stellar Empire" mix of Discoteca by the PSB. It weighs in at around
  1595. 9 minutes but there's very little repetition on it.) You can handle a
  1596. bit of repetition, but after 20 seconds or so, your brain is saying,
  1597. "next already!".
  1598.  
  1599. One song I've always missed on these mix albums is Legs/Legacy (god,
  1600. what a great subway poster this single had!) Does anyone know if ZTT
  1601. owns the rights to this song? I think a couple songs from In Visible
  1602. Silence were brought over from ZTT, but can't remember which.
  1603.  
  1604. Should you buy it? Tough call; this is a very "personal" album. I would
  1605. definitely borrow a friends or try to listen to it several times. Those
  1606. CD store "preview" stations can't do justice to an album like this,
  1607. although for several of these songs, once you've heard the intro, you've
  1608. heard the entire song. Would I buy it again? [hesitantly] Yeah. Tracks
  1609. #1, 3, 7, 8, and 9 are pretty good. #5 and 11 are passable. Are they
  1610. worth $14-16? Good question.
  1611.  
  1612. I know one thing: listening to this album will have you reaching for
  1613. your old AON albums for another go around. There are enough samples here
  1614. to whet your appetite for the real thing which, for 10-15-year-old
  1615. music, still sounds remarkably fresh.

  2028. I highly recommend this single.  First of all, it is one of my favorite
  2029. tracks off the album because it's so different and cool (gotta love that
  2030. odd meter time-signature).  Second, the sleeve design is great.  The Cd
  2031. sleeve is all black with a nice picture of a wish bone (inner sleeve
  2032. too!).  The 12" is much better though with a gradiated black to white
  2033. background and the same wishbone (inner sleeve on this one too!). 
  2034. Third, the mixes are great.  If you were wondering how this tracked
  2035. would be remixed because of the weird time-signature than you should
  2036. have guess that the track would be re-edited to 4/4 (wonderfully done by
  2037. Brian Eno).  For all their hype, the Propellerheads mix is the least
  2038. interest (guest-mix wise).  The 808 remix (unregrettable) is definitely
  2039. i.f.u. (you guess at the words) and really cool.

  2041. Is M@Maitland Paul Morley?  The sleeve is really good.  Also, no ZTT
  2042. logo except on the CD itself.  Instead the sleeve goes for a tiny and
  2043. modest "ZANG TUUM TUMB" at the bottom.  Very nice touch.

  2067. at work and I haven't heard anything about it.  Maybe it was delayed?
