I don't have that, but I think it was just entitled "ZTT Ten".
(I don't know if that really was a proper 'book' - don't think so.)

Well, Propaganda _was_ Pop at last - although not of the usual kind!

It's entitled ZTT Ten - released in 1000 copies. Basically it's some
100-odd Xeroxed pages clipped together. Colour cover - the rest in
b/w. A couple of pages in the start describing the acts signed to ZTT
- the rest is the ZTT discography up to 9 My 1994.
You'd find all the discog info at Lazlo's www-site.
It's fun to have but I wouldn't bother finding it unless you really,
really want to own everything by ZTT.
Cheers,
Thomas.

Hi 808 Statians
I have received confirmation that 808 State won't be appearing at the "Rave
City 3" rave in Munich next month. According to the promoter it is because
their new album is not ready...
Thanks for getting the info Roli & Roger!
Since nobody seems to have mentioned it here (or in Webstate, which seems to
be dead?): The 808 State remix of R.E.M.'s "King of Comedy" has been out for
a couple of weeks as a 12" promo. Apparently it won't be getting a
commercial release, so get hold of a copy if you can!
If all goes well, I may own one soon. Thanks Scott!

I apologize for sending this out as a form letter, but lots of people have
asked about this.
As near as I can tell, xmission completely shut down all majordomo-supplied
list services on January 29 or 30, replacing the majordomo software with
SmartList. This was supposed to be a smooth transition, but it doesn't seem
to have been that way for everyone. In a twist that makes matters even more
difficult, I was out of town and (blissfully) offline from January 27th
through February 4th. I'm back now, but I know nothing about using SmartList
and have over 700 messages in my mailbox to plow through before I can even
start to deal with any problems.
If you've emailed me about a problem with the lists, I'm aware of it and
will look into it as soon as humanly possible. If the problem you
complained about has already gone away (i.e., you got extra copies of one
digest but subsequent issues were fine, etc.), PLEASE LET ME KNOW
IMMEDIATELY. If the problem still exists, please hold off on any further
mail to me about it until Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thanks.

Hi all,
As promised, here is the manifesto by Luigi Russolo, the guy you see
in the Art of Noise liner notes. I apologize for any errors in the
transription.
This was written in 1913. It *so very much* encapsulates the ideology
that ZTT and, specificaly, The Art of Noise subscribed to. ITZA
GOOD-ER! ...you can also find it in:
"Music in the Western World, A History in Documents", Piero Weiss and
Richard Taruskin, Schirmer Books. ISBN: 0-02-872900-5.
This is one for the archives! Enjoy!
"The Art of Noises"
Luigi Russolo
Life in ancient times was silent. In the nineteenth century, with the
invention of machines, Noise was born. Today Noise is triumphant, and
reigns supreme over the senses of men. The art of music at first sought
and achieved purity and sweetness of sound; later it blended diverse
sounds, but always with intent to caress the ear with suave harmonies.
Today, growing ever more complicated, it seeks those combinations of
sounds that fall most dissonantly, strangely, and harshly upon the ear.
We thus approach nearer and nearer to the MUSIC OF NOISE. We must break
out of this narrow circle of pure musical sounds, and conquer the
infinite variety of noise-sounds.
Everyone will recognize that every musical sound carries with it an
incrustation of familiar and stale sense associations, which predispose
the hearer to boredom, despite all the efforts of innovating musicians.
We futurists have all deeply loved the music of the great composers.
Beethoven and Wagner for many years wrung our hearts. But now we are
sated with them and derive much greater pleasure from ideally combining
the noises of streetcars, internal-combustion engines, automobiles, and
busy crowds than from re-hearing, for example, the "Eroica" or the
"Pastorale."
We cannot see the immense apparatus of the modern orchestra without
being profoundly disappointed by its feeble acoustic achievements. Is
there anything more absurs than to see twenty men breaking their necks to
multiply the meowing of a violin? All this will naturally infuriate the
musicomaniacs and perhaps disturb the somnolent atmosphere of our concert
halls. Let us enter, as futurists, into one of these institutions for
musical anemia. The first measure assails your ear with the boredom of
the already-heard and causes you to anticipate the boredom of the measure
to come. Thus we sip, from measure to measure, two or three differnet
sorts of boredom, while we await an unusual emotion that never arrives.
Meanwhile we are revolted by the monotony of the sensations experienced,
combined with the idiotic religious excitement of the listeners,
Buddhistically intoxicated by the thousandth repetition of their
hypocritical and artificial ecstasy. Away! Let us be gone since we shall
not much longer succeed in restraining a desire to create a new musical
realism by a generous distribution sonorous blows and slaps, leaping
nimbly over violins, pianofortes, contrabasses, and groaning organs. Away!
Let us wander through a great modern city with our ears more attentive
than our eyes, and distinguish the sounds of water, air, or gas in metal
pipes, the purring of motors (which breathe and pulsate with an
indubitable animalism), the throbbing of valves, the pounding of pistons,
the screeching of gears, the clatter of streetcars on their rails, the
cracking of whips, the flapping of awnings and flags. We shall amuse
ourselves by orchestrating in our minds the noise of the metal shutters
of store windows, the slamming of doors, the bustle and shuffle of
crowds, the multitudinous uproar of railroad stations, forges, mills,
printing presses, power stations, and underground railways. Nor should
the new noises of modern warfare be forgotten.
We must fix the pitch and regulate the harmonies and rhythms of these
extraordinarily varied sounds. To fix the pitch of noises does not mean
to take away from their irregularity of tempo and intensity that
characterizes their vibrations, but rather to give definate gradiation or
pitch to the stronger and more predominant of these vibrations. Indeed,
noise is differentiated from musical sound merely in that the vibrations
that produce it are confused and irregular, both in tempo and in intensity.
Every, manifestation of life is accompanied by noise. Noise is
therfore familiar to our ears and has the power to remind us immediately
of life itself. Musical sound, a thing extraneous to life and independent
of it, an occasional and unnecessary adjunct, has become for our ears
what a too familiar face is to our eyes. Noise, on the other hand, which
comes to us confused and irregular as life itself, never reveals itself
wholly but reserves for us innumerable surprises. We are convinced,
therefore, that by selecting, co-ordinating, and controlling noises we
shall enrich mankind with a new and unsuspected source of pleasure.
Despite the fact that it is characteristic of sound to remind us brutally
of life, the ART OF NOISES must not limit itself to reprodictive
imitation. It will reach its greatest emotional power through the purely
acoustic enjoyment which the inspiration of the artist will contrive to
evoke from combinations of noises.
These are the futurist orchestra's six families of noises, which we
shall soon produce mechanically:
1 | 2 | 3 | 4
| Booms | Whistles | Whispers | Screams |
| Thunderclaps | Hisses | Murmurs | Screeches |
| Explosions | Snorts | Mutterings | Reustlings |
| Crashes | | Bustling | Buzzes |
| Splashes | | noises | Cracklings |
| Roars | | Gurgles | Sounds |
| | | | obtained |
| | | | by friction |
5 | 6
| Noises obtained by | Voices of animals |
| percussion on | and men: |
| metals, wood, | Shouts |
| stone, terracotta | Shrieks |
| | Groans |
| | Howls |
| | Laughs |
| | Wheezes |
| | Sobs |
I am not a professional musician; I have therefore no acoustic
prejudices and and [sic] no works to defend. I am a futurist painter
projecting into an art he loves and has studied his desire to renovate
all things. Being therefor more audacious than a professional musician
could be, caring nought for my seeming incompetence, and convinced that
audacity makes all things lawful and all things possible, I have imagined
a great renovation of music through the Art of Noises.

Scribner's Sons, 1971), 1298-1302. Trans. Stephen Somervelle. Copyright

...I just think that it is amazing that this guy wrote this in 1913,
before the tape recorder was available. I also think it is cool that
someone said the words: "The Art of Noises" over 80 years ago! I
personaly don't regard many futurists, but this guy was on the money. In
the same book there is a paper called "The music of chance" by John Cage.
Great book!

Yes it's true. The track is called "Spanish Marching" and appears on a
compilation
called "From Manchester With Love.net" which includes 23 exclusive/unreleased
tracks on 2 Cd's and a 100 Page guide. Here are the details:
CD Order nr. L.NET4CD/016846237024 Network Distributed by Network/Sony
also available on Vinyl & MC
The sleeve notes say:
"Spanish Marching"
Exclusive Track
Written by Graham Massey/Andrew Barker/Darren Partington
Produced by 808 State
published by Perfect Songs
appears by kind permission of ZTT Records
There is even an e-mail address on the CD: cziz@love.net.u-net.com
In the 100 page guide there is a 5-page interview with the lads. Here's what
they said about spanish marching:
Graham: "I think that track is very 808 State"
Darren: "Apparently people who have heard it have said it's got our trademark on
it"
I haven't got the CD myself yet, but according to my Swiss mate Roli (who I
have to credit for all this information!) it's "thumping balearic style in
the vein of Pacific State".
The CD also ads a new Richie Hawtin mix of New Order's "Blue Monday" (i.e.
not the one of The Rest of New Order), so these two tunes alone make it
worth hunting down!

Well that's disgusting! I think we should all mount a campaign to get
it released, after all, if George Lucas had not persevered with Star
Wars, that would never have been released either. Surely it is upto
us to decide whether or not it is worth listening to? Why deny even a

Well, perhaps we've got a sneak post-mortem-view with their track on the
Dangerous Minds soundtrack. But nevertheless, I'd be supporting such a

Perhaps they could release it as a very limited edition, for a very

Shane seems to be getting around here in the US lately. His track with
Sinead is on the Soundtrack to the film "Two if By Sea" and he's also on
a track off of the new Nick Cave album (to be released 2/20/96).
Here's the details for the discography:
Soundtrack: Two If By Sea
CD: 1996 US (TVT 6910-2)
CS: 1996 US (TVT 6910-4)
Shane MacGowan & Sinead O'Connor: Haunted
[I'd be willing to bet this is the same version as has already been
released as there has been no evidence that any other mixes exist.]

I was surprised to find the Novecento ZTT single come into my record
store this week. I wonder if it will do well here? I'm starting to like
this track more and more each time I hear it which is a true sign of a
catchy pop song. The US release does contain a remix previously
unreleased (or as far as I can tell from the discography): a Rappino

Imagine my surprise and delight as I was viewing the playlist of the
local (and awesome) public radio statio KCRW (www.kcrw.org) to find out
that they played a new ZTT group: The Frames D.C.
Now I think I posted that this was listed in a cdeurope newlist a few
weeks ago. Although I think it was a single. This was listed as an album.
The Frames D.C.: Track played: Monument Album: Fitzcarraldo
If anyone else wants to check it out, look at the playlist section and
look at the playlist for the first Friday in February. I believe it was
played in the evening.
So, has anyone heard this group?

Well, the US single of Seal's "Don't Cry" finally came out. I think this
single is going to do pretty well here. It's similar enough to KFAR but
different enough to get airplay.
Here's the details for the discography:
Seal : Don't Cry
CSS: 1996 US (WAR 17708-4)
CDS: 1996 US (WAR 17708-2)
4:32 Don't Cry (Radio Edit)
5:41 Fast Changes (Album Version)
I doubt there will be any remixes but I'll keep an eye out.

Or maybe we could ask Trevor to make a tape for us! And while he's at it
he can through on the Mint Juleps album and the original version of Yes'
Big Generator album. That would sure be nice of him. We won't sell it.

Original verison of Big Generator? What's all this about?
Anyway, I think the salient difference between the Mint Juleps album
and the Wendy and Lisa is that I think MJ was scrapped because of
contractual disputes. With Wendy and Lisa, its a load of people who
try
to tailor everything toward a certain market who decide whether or
not to scrap i.e. WEA.
P.S. Don't die.

I would swear that I read an article about Big Generator that said that
the album had been recorded twice. Trevor had finished with it (or at
least the intial recording) and then there was a dispute with Rabin I
believe.
The album did take a long time to complete and ended up having several
producers. I'm sure everyone knows that Trevor's name is still on it and
I think there are quite a few places where you can still hear his touch.

Hello,
are there still any Hoodlum Priest desciples out there?
If so here's info on a new CD-single I just got last week:
* Hoodlum Priest: Naked Time / No Fear
CD5: 1995 UK (Stylus22/RTM: STYCD002)
6:13 Naked Time
4:33 No Fear
4:09 No Fear (Noko Apollo 440 Mix)
9:58 Naked Time (Uberchill - Technietzsche Mix)
And in my opinion it's great - especially No Fear.
Again it's way over the top... going beyond my abilities of description!
All I can say regarding to styles (and I hate doing that), is that Noko's
mix is a bit different from the rest incorporation pure break-beats. (But
it's not less great, of course!)
This time the songs are featuring actually _sung_ vocals, but they're
really fitting to the music.

Tra-la-la!
Hello, as I am new to the list, I wonder if anyone knows the bit of AOR
sampled at the end of AON's Beatbox (Diversion 1)?
Just before the groovy piano fade there is a brass stab sample repeated a
few times during the suddenly quiet bit. It goes BAM.... BAM..... a few
times, 1/4 of a second at a time... then a fuller version of the sample is
played.
It's one of those "I recognise it, but I don't know what it is called"-type
musical moments... It sounds *like* Yes: the break to the bridge of "Owner
of a Lonley Heart"...
Has anyone got any ideas?
Yours,
Alex!

here in san fransisco i can't find a copy of claudia's 'love and a million
other things' CD. does anyone have a copy they'd like to sell, or know where
i can order one from?
i have the 2 cd singles from the album. i really like 'i, dream', from the
kiss like ether cd5.
claudia is one of my favorite performers, but i keep wondering, what's she
been up to? i heard via this mailing group that she had done guest vocals on
a couple tracks, but what does she do with the majority of her time? will
she release another album? has she delved into some other kind of art?
also, has claudia ever written anything, as in prose or prose/poetry? when
i look at some of the black and white, "german-style" photos of her, and
listen to her passionate and sometimes surreal words i can't help but think
of anais nin, another of my favorites. do you think claudia was influenced
by anais nin's work?
i think 'blood rush' on the ACT album is one of the best musical treatments
of the frankenstein theme i've heard. what do you think?
please send any info.

I always was under the impression that at least part of it a very
heavily distorted rendering of the break from Toto's Rosanna, the
instrumental sting right before the lines "Meet me all the way," combined
with a standard Fairlight orch hit at the end. I seem to remember actually
comparing the two 10 years ago or so and being fairly convinced. It's one
of the few AON sample ID's I've tried to make.
A friend of mine said that he had found an old record of the 1812 overture
that features the "Now the fuse is lit" sample, apparently in a recorded
preamble to the performance describing the setup of real cannons used in
that performance.
Shameless plug: There's a 60-second sound clip of my dub remix of
Moments in Love (named, appropriately, Moments in Dub) on my web site. It
sounds really creepy as an au file. http://www.execpc.com/~davec/au/dub.au

Hello lister's
First a thank you to Paul from UCLA for providing the Luigi Russolo
"The Art of Noises" to us all. It has to be considered as one of the
important back-ground texts/effects concerning the ZTT-era.
Second, I was quite surpised to see that Novocento was re(re)leased on
ZTT. I actually have an older version of "Day and Night" from 1992,
and released on the danish label MEGA (the one with Ace of Base).
It has 4 different mixes, but only one of them are featured on the ZTT
releases.
Novocento : Day and Night, MEGA Records, 1992
CD5
3:45 Radio Version
4:06 Club Mix
7:54 Morales Mix [equal to ZTT:morales club mix]
3:50 Def Version
The first is produced, mixed by Novocento,
the rest is mixed by Morales.
Thanks for now,

Yes, that was an essential text we all were missing!
"Thank You, Paul", to quote Grace Jones...

It also has been released in 1992 on CD-single in Germany on Baby Records.
The sleeve is a bit different to the danish issue, but it contains exactly
the same versions. BTW: On the "Club Mix" only the vocal intro is mixed
by David Morales, the rest of the track is Novecento-made. AND: The "Def
Version" is nothing but an ultra-early fade-out of the "[Morales] Def Mix"
from the ZTT release.
Last not least: Why is everybody writing 'Novocento'? It's NovEcento,
which means '900' in Italian, as far as I know.
Greetings
Joerg
P.S.: Both the original Novecento mixes are _very_ different from all the
others! They aren't housy at all.
I'd describe the "Radio Version" as a glamorous easy dance-pop tune
and the "Club Mix" reminds me a bit of Enigma at some moments.

Date: 27 Feb 1996 17:36:36 +0100
Hi!
Yesterday I gladly picked up a white-label with new remixes of
"I'll Find A Way" by The Brain feat. Claudia Bruecken:
* The Brain feat. Claudia Bruecken: I'll Find A Way - Remixes
12": 1995 GE ({THE BRAIN - A}{THE BRAIN - B2}) [w/l-promo;
title-stickered neutral-sleeve]
A: 10:45 I'll Find A Way (Jam El Mar Mix)
B: 8:02 I'll Find A Way (Variable Club Remix) - by Andrew Brix
3:40 I'll Find A Way (Falling Upwards Edit) - by Sound Factory
The mixes are all very different from the previous (Brain-made) ones.
The sound of the Jam El Mar Mix reminds me a bit of Hardfloor's "Blue
Monday" remix. And the Variable Club Remix is a really great (and really
variable) house-trance-pop fusion; besides the Original Mix this has
become my favourite version!
On a different topic: I've been told "The Official End Of It All" by
Sexus has been commercially released in the UK by ZTT, now. Further,
there's also a seperate 12"-SAM-promo of the track. Don't know any
details of mixes etc, yet.
Keep it up

the new (third) Moloko single is being hyped among DJ's with a promo
12" called 'Promonoid.' (Echo/MCA/BMG) It contains the album version
of 'Dominoid' and three other mixes, the first by Anne Dudley. I read
her strings dominate, and there's a wahwah guitar in the end. Second
mix is called 'Cynthia's Hi-fli's fuzzy logic mix' and is mainly
groovey, and particularly long. The 'Panty sniffer mix' goes into a
140bpm exciting drive, and has a wonderful effect in the end: the
needle dances rhythmically over the vynil... Thanks to Sjeng Stokkink

if I heard it correctly. Trevor got a good amount of applause from the audience.
Now, hopefully someone will have a copy of the show and will digitize a picture for the

Hi everyone -
Congrats to SEAL and Trevor on the Grammy's last night. The last award of

shortish speach thanking Jill and a bunch of people I never heard of, along
with a general ZTT thanks. I didn't record it, but it appeared that there
weren't any GOOD camera shots of both Trevor and Seal together.
Here's what SEAL walked away with:
RECORD OF THE YEAR - 'Kiss from a Rose'
SONG OF THE YEAR - 'Kiss from a Rose'
BEST MALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE
Keep up the good stuff; VIVA ZTT!!
While I'm at it, a few thing have been bugging me:
1) Someone told me that the reason why the ACT:'Chance/Winner '88' 12"s and
7"s where not produced in volume was because of a marketing problem with
samples taken from ABBA. Is there any truth in this? Which ABBA song?
2) I noticed that CDEurope lists a compilation called "Lets' Zance". Is
this supposed to be "Zance: a Decade... "? I realize that they (CDeurope)
are not the most respected place on the net, but what could this be?
3) And finially, the 808 State: Moses CD5 US promo.... Does anyone even
have this? I have had no luck in finding even a trace of it!
