The last thing I heard was a late summer/early fall tentative release for the
new album. (Can't remember where I heard that.. Might've been on this
list...?) I keep checking the Eastwest Records website looking for info, but
nothing...
Claudia stated in a (relatively) recent issue of Mojo, that for the past
several years, she's been raising her daughter, living off royalties, and
that since her daughter's birth, her life had changed drastically - but she
still sounded very "Claudia." (Note: the word "Claudia" is now officially an
adjective.) :)
Didn't someone on the list (several months ago) say that they were set to
interview/forward questions to her? I never heard anything further on that.

Subject: (ztt) ztis cassette singles
I was looking through Lazlo's ztt discography and I noticed there were
several mixes that seemed to be cassette-single only
or, renamed as such.
As far as propaganda and frankie are concerned (then again, who else
had 'collectible' ztt cassette singles?)
what mixes are most unique, most valuable.
I just got a P:machinery one, but haven't listened to it yet because it
arrived in such poor condition
I really envy the Duel one, and Mabuse doesn't seem like there's
anything special about it.
It seems the 'relax' one is pretty neat too.
Did 808 state ever have anything -cassette only- ?

A couple of the cassette singles were released a few years later as
Japanese-only CD singles. The AON cassingle "Closely, Closely" comes to mind
as one of those. I was so careful with that cassette: I would make copies
off my "master" and listen to those out of fear I'd screw the cassette up
somehow. Finally snagged the CD single (a 3" single, no less) and now just
listen to the MP3s.
Some things never change. :)

Subject: (ztt) Trevor Horn LIVE in Los Angeles June 25th
Attention people of Los Angeles,
Trevor Horn will be performing live with Sir George Martin and the L.A. Bowl
orchestra this Friday the 25th. I was listening to the local (& greatest!)
public radio station, KCRW 89.9 fm (http://www.kcrw.org) and they mentioned
this Hollywood Bowl concert of Beatles music with many special guests. When
they announced Trevor Horn ("former member of Yes") I nearly drove off the
road. Actually, I nearly drove off the road when they announced that one of
the other artists performing would be the reunited Bangles?!?! Huh?! :)
It sounds like a weird show that's for sure but I wanted to post the info in
case someone wants to go. It's obviously a very rare occasion to see Trevor
perform live. I'm assuming that he will be singing a song or two. I might
go if I can get some cheap tickets.

From: James Scott Coward <artisan2@oklahoma.net>
Subject: (ztt) All these AON reviews.
I'm beginning to find it disappointing to see how few people
understand the purpose behind "The Seduction of Claude Debussy". People
are forgetting this is not, really, an Art Of Noise album per se. As The
Art Of Noise, themselves, have roundly stated, on more than one
occasion, this is a tribute to Claude Debussy and his work. This also
happens to be a dream of Trevor Horn's. I, personally, try not to knock,
criticize or ridicule people's dream projects; they tend to be a more
personal view of what someone wants, likes or thinks. Hell one of my
dreams was to see them get back together. And to think I didn't have to
lift a finger to make it happen. ;-> Now, if I can just get them to
produce for Depeche Mode and Bob Dylan....
My point is that when you do any tribute performance you wind up
forfeiting a content of your own style to support the work of whom you
are paying tribute. That is, of course, unless you are paying tribute to
yourself. It is just part of the nature of the act. After all, the album
really is AON does Debussy, not AON does AON. Furthermore, they are
demonstrating the point that Debussy's work has engrained itself
into/triggered the forms, styles and feel of 20th Century music. This
causes them to forfeit even more of their own style, in lieu of
Debussy's, to effectively prove their point. In light of this, all they
have left to show for, of themselves, is their production style and
values. When looking at the album objectively, it is nearly a thesis
work in modern music and it's origin. I think people are, too often,
ignoring the album title (and theme implied therein) and concentrating,
only, on the name Art of Noise and the label ZTT. Quite naturally, if
this is all that one does before reviewing the album, then, they,
likely, will be disappointed and will have missed the point. I, in
fact, did that on the first play. Fortunately, I caught on somewhere
around "approximate mood swing no:2" and played it all over again.
Though, I think that Stravinsky and Mussorgsky also played equal parts
in latter 20th Century music, I happen to agree with AON that Debussy
was the most influential over all.
I, for one, feel that a tribute album was not necessarily the best
way to make a comeback, though. Here, in the US, they tend to be
regarded as glorified cover-albums, merely, with better packaging. But,
this is what Anne and Trevor have been enjoying doing in their spare
time. And this music is what brought The Art Of Noise back together. And
you know that means that so is back, the big time Trevor Horn production
machine. Too bad all the bands that they supported in the past aren't
reuniting as well, under ZTT. I'm sure we'll see some new acts get
launched to the forefront under The Art Of Noise's support, though.
Hopefully, none of the new performers will be inclined to pop Trevor in
the eye when their works of art (which Seal couldn't have produced worth
a shit on his own, anyway!!) aren't put out on a regimented schedule
like a Sony Records assembly line, or something. [see tag below for more
on that.]
Also, this new incarnation of The Art Of Noise is still not going to
sound entirely like the AON of old, simply because they lack the
presence of Gary and JJ. A lot of you people don't seem to think that JJ
amounted to anything, but this new AON album, I think, proves you wrong.
There is barely any of that in-your-face attitude that was felt
throughout "Who's Afraid?" I, personally, can hear a good chunk of that
attitude, however, in a number of tracks from "artosilence.co.uk". Also
they lack that golden EQ touch that Gary is so good at. Trevor is the
master of production and arranging bits and pieces of performances
together and always will be. But, no one has been able to, fully,
replace Gary as production engineer and sound man. The current album is
very full and lush and intricate, but, it gets a little muddy at times.
For me, what has tied it all together, with "Seduction..." was the wise
decision to bring Paul Morley back in. I forgot how much I liked his
style of verse. It's cryptic yet still pretty; and brutally necessary to
complete their image.
Finally, if you're expecting to hear the old Art Of Noise, then, go
to your CD case and get out the old Art Of Noise. Nothing stays the
same, not even them. Or, nothing stays the same, especially them.

Hmm, I have a reaction to this interview, which is as you say, quite good.
Reading between the lines, this new Art of Noise is much more accessible,
in many different ways.. It's often frustrating for an artist to have to
explain the nuances of their art for those like me who just don't get it
on first listen, view, whatever. But the fact that they're really making
an effort can be as encouraging and as thought provoking as the work
itself.
When Paul goes to lengths to speak frankly about what they've created,
suddenly the album is much less a finished product and more of an snapshot
of creative process that was in motion for quite some time. I, personally,
am happy to see the masks half removed, if only for the run of this
promotional period, and even if it's at a price of some of the mystery
that was the image of the Art of Noise.
