Just got back from seeing Masada at the Knitting Factory.
They couldnt have played better; it was outstanding. But they werent
playing on the stage like most bands do- no, they were on the floor.
There were tables and chairs on the stage and on the floor. And
there was one light shining down on them, mostly on Joey. Guess
John wanted a more intimate setting.
Here's GOOD NEWS:
This Wednesday, the 10th, Bill Frisell will be doing a solo performance
between Masada sets AND he will be sitting in during Masada's second
set!! YES!!!!!YES!!!!!!!!! Does it show that I'm happy?

Just a little something for those of you up here in the northeast.
The Loud Music Festival in Northampton, Mass. is happening from April 17-20.
There will be over 200 bands playing at night and panel discussions in the
day.
Of interest here will be the Knitting Factory Stage on the 18th. Zorn will
be playing (possibly duets w/ Mike Patton), other NYC scenesters will be
brought up, and my group, Prelapse, will be playing.
My group will be performing pieces written for Naked City, including world
premiers, reworkings of older material, and possibly some original stuff too.
This is all the info I have, but y'all can call (617) 232-2489 ext.5683 or
1-800-843-8425
for directions and tix.
Hope to see you there!

You can also try Forced Exposure...they for sure distribute God
Mountain. While yer at it, pick up Kirihito's _Da Vi De Bo_ on God
Mountain. Thouroughly wonderful, one of the most original bands out
there. Got to see them here in Olympia a monthe ago, and boy did they
deliver!

2) Phone: (617) 629-4773
3) Mail: Forced Exposure

Yup, they've got catalogs, email updates etc ...
I know they carry both God Mountain & Trigram. I picked up Ground Zero's

I caught two Masada shows this weekend- Truely wonderful performances. I had
front row last night in front of Joey Baron. the highlight of the show for me
was "Beer Sheba" from Masada 6. Is it just me, or does Joey steal the show?
He's incredible. A couple questions:
1) Who is the guy I see at every Zorn show in the front row that tapes the
concert? He's very noticable with a microphone stand right in front of him.
2)Why is Greg Cohen's right hand purple? It looks like he has no
circulation...

Where's the controvery and dialogue with "what's Zorn's best album?" That's
dull. How about, what the most intollerable Zorn thing to listen too? I would
have to say, hands down for me would be ABSINTHE. I purchased Absinthe &
Radio together, and refused to play Absinthe until I completely digested
Radio. Well after about a month, I put Absinthe on, sat back in a chair with
a set of headphones cranked up. I remember thinking, ok, like the music is
gonna start any minute, and then like an hour later the CD was over. Now of
course somebody is making some type of false conclusion that i don't think
Absinthe is music, which would be wrong, since I percieve all of reality to
be music, except of course Neil Diamond. Later Zorn-ites - Jim

HEy I heard a Bailey/Zorn/William Parker cut on the radio(wow!) the other
day, but I don't recall the name, but it's a new release. Improv stuff,
reminiscent of the show I saw them do at the Knitting factory last year,
except the show included Dougie bowne on drums, what I heard on the radio is
drumless.
As to Zorn being on the radio, I live in the New York City area. If you
do to, here are some shows/stations to check out:
1. Afternoon Music on 89.9 fm Monday, tuesday, and Wednesday(I think) the
show is some time between 2 and 6 pm. They play lots of Downtown,
improvisational, eclectic stuff.
2. New Sounds: 93.9 Fm every night, 11:00 PM. Truely a great show that
includes a lot of World Music, electonic music, Jazz, post-classical, music
for computers, New age and more. I've heard Zorn cuts on the show, as well
as Frith, Baron, Braxton, Cage, Frisell, Horvitz.
3. Hearts of Space: Ambient music FRiday nights, MIdnight, 93.9 FM...Laswell
sometimes.
4. Jazz Alternatives MOnday thru FRiday WXCR FM 89.9 FM 6-10 pm. Lots of
traditional Jazz, but they do play some cool stuff sometimes. I just heard a
whole evening with David S Ware on this show a few days ago.
5. Profiles in Jazz Sunday afternoon WXCR FM 89.9 2-6 PM . They profile one
artist for the whole show. They do some Avant Garde people sometimes (Derek
Bailey etc.) and also I heard a great show featuring Ronald Shannon Jackson
last year (some great Last Exit stuff).
Also I have two recorded interviews with Zorn, Masada 4, and a live
show or two. Any tape traders out there? e-mail me: Stikmanjim@aol.com

eugene chadbourne was just here in the bay area for about a week playing a
bunch of shows. he stayed at my house for a few nights and i was working on
an article for the bay guardian so i got to interview him at length. one
thing i asked him about was his experience with zorn and how he felt about
the book of heads. i had heard rumors that the two of them had some bad
feelings and that the feeling among the musicians who knew JZ and EC at the
time was that zorn ripped chadbourne off right and left and that EC would
confirm this if i asked him about it. well i asked him and he had only
positive things to say about zorn, and literally laughed at the accusation
that zorn had ripped him off. he commented on how zorn's level of
perfectionism and his interest in super fast musical changes eventually led
them apart musically, but he displayed nothing but respect for zorn and said
that he would consider working together again if the right opportunity arose.
he also gave me a tape of a forthcoming cd (to be released on derek bailey's
label, incus) of zorn and chadbourne duos from 1980. it's really amazing
stuff, all improvised and pretty unlike the parachute records they made
together. chadbourne expressed regret that more of the improvisations they
played together had never seen the light of day.

Hi y'all
I wanted to clear up a possible misconception concerning my last post. The
"Knitting Factory stage" at the Loud Music Festival (where Zorn, Anthony
Coleman, Prelapse, others are playing on april 18) will be somewhere in
Northampton, Massachussettes. NOT in the Knitting Factory in NYC. Call the
Loud Music people for tix/directions: 1(617) 232-2489 ext.5683 or
1-800-843-8425.
Somebody asked about the "new" NC tunes. Technically, there aren't any new
tunes (except the ones I wrote! ;-) These are tunes that Zorn wrote for NC
but for whatever reason never recorded/rehearsed, or got around to them. Most
of them would feel very comfortable on the Grand Guignol or Radio albums. A
lot of the titles have the word "Blood" somewhere in them.
My group "Prelapse" should have a CD featuring this music out in a number of
months. No specifics yet, there are still a lot of details left to work
out.;-)

My posts to this bulletin board have not been reaching their final
destination, and I have no clue as to why. I'll continue to post in spite of
this, though, and hope that things work themselves out. I saw the new Staley
CD the other day, and it appears as if Zorn only performed on one of the
tracks. The listing in Cadence doesn't surprise me (in listing Zorn as a
contributor), as the same thing was done for Staley's reissue of his "Mumbo
Jumbo" recording, which again featured Zorn and listed him first among
contributors when in fact he only played on two or three tracks. I also saw
the second volume of the "Collasal Saxophone Sessions" recording, which
looked as if it had about three performances by Zorn (I think that he showed
up twice on volume one).

You are confusing me. The Evidence 2xCD is the reissue of the two Japanese
volumes on King Records/Paddle Wheel.
Are you really saying that there is a second volume with 2xCD again?
