So I'm gonna break down and stop waiting for a domestic release of Masada
(unless someone knows about an upcomming release) and I wanted to get some
advice as to which one or two would be the best to have.  In particular I
would like to get an exposure to as wide a range of what this group can do;
i.e. the most representative disk as opposed to the most extreme.

A few things happening in New York. Masada is doing a week at the Knitting
Factory, and their will be a 3 day Tzadik festival, both in April. The first
evening of the Tzadik festival will be Zorn solo, Elliot Sharp and I believe
Shelly Hirsch. Tzadik should have at least 3 new releases in April. I've also
heard rumblings of new Avant titles, but have yet to see a list. Perhaps
others out there can fill in the blanks.

Joey Baron - _Crackshot_ was supposed to come out at the end of February,
but now it's been pushed back with no release date listed in the CDNow
database.

A disc by Z'ev is supposed to come out April 9th.  Does anyone know
anything about this one?

Since Zorn was the person who initially turned me on to the music of Scelsi, I
thought folks on this list might be interested in the following:

Two works by the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi will be performed at
New England Conservatory in Boston on the Enchanted Circle series next
Thursday.  The 35-minute Suite No. 9 "Ttai" for solo piano will open
the program.  "Anahit" for violin and chamber orchestra will be heard
after intermission, along with works by Webern and Tamar Diesendruck.
Scelsi's music is trance-like and hallucinatory, filled with
quasi-ostinati and micro-tonal explorations of the harmonic series.
He was nearly unknown through most of his creative life.  John Cage said
of Scelsi, "He would make a whole piece that would be one sound.
Constantly changing, but still just one sound.  I loved his music....it's
the experience of the same thing being a different thing all the time."

Mine would have to be the original "Naked City" LP on Elektra.  Twas my
first ever Zorn record, and I find it to be a pretty nice sampler of some
of the varied types of music that Zorn has tackled.  Of course, it still
is only the tip of the iceberg...

One of the most crazed record ever made! And for me the sign that Zorn was
getting completely out of the European improvised influence to create a
completely new genre of music.

The record was originally issued on Frith's Rift label in 1983. To my
knowledge, it was the first time that Zorn was using rock music elements
(thanks to Arto Linday) in his music. The pieces are very short and
features four different lineups. Even Zorn agrees that it is weird
stuff (his comment on the Japanese reissue)!

"The Violent Death Of Dutch Schultz" might be one of the most amazing
pieces Zorn ever did.

Even 13 years after, the music is still new and urgent (not the slighest
trace of self-indulgence). If anybody had a doubt that Zorn was pushing
boundaries, listening to LOCUS SOLUS should answer them.

I thought it was an amazing record 13 years ago; I still do.

I don't know how representative it is, but I happen to like the third
one (Gimel) a whole bunch.

Speaking of which, is the CD-3 mail in offer completely null and void?

I'm also a little curious about 5 & 6 sinch my local record store
doesn't stock them.  Anyone care to elaborate?
