i caught wednesday's late set with frisell at the knitting factory. as an
aside, i'm really tired of the kf treating the fans like shit. three shows
in one evening made it impossible to get up and down the stairs, only one
bartender on duty and packed into the performance like sardines - but the
knitting factory's always been like that and probably always will be.

anyway, what everyone's really concerned with - the performance. i felt
that frisell really took a lot away from the vibe the band was trying to
give off. face it, the band practices as a quartet and they've been playing
as a quartet live recently and frisell's electric guitar just didn't fit
in. i used to be a big fan of frisell's but it seems that his style just
refuses to change and it's gotten a bit old to me by now. zorn seemed happy
to let him solo throughout the night but, except for the last song of the
set, his solos really led nowhere. finally during the last song (sorry,
it's too tough to match masada titles to the songs) he let go with a really
funky solo which was great. also, during the same song (and the encore)
anthony coleman played piano and that added a lot to both songs - i'd like
to see a full show with coleman on piano.

i guess frisell just didn't seem to fit in with the accoustic masada
format. eveyone on stage joked around and laughed a lot but some friends i
brought to the show, who are totally unfamiliar with zorn/frisell and their
ongoing musical relationship thought the band was actually making fun of
him during the set. while i'm sure that wasn't what was going on, they were
right when they pointed out that frisell looks a lot like steve forbes.

has zorn ever spoken in public about what his feelings on judaism are? i
know he's the unofficial leader of the radical jewish culture scene, but,
for example, during the september '93 zorn month at the knitting factory i
believe he played on both of the high holy days. also, he seem to alway be
wearing tsetsin (sp?), the fringe orthodox jews wear around their waist,
but he doesn't wear a yarmulke, which is supposed to be worn with tsitsin.

i'm not trying to set him up or anything. as an atheist who was raised
jewish i certainly consider myself to belong to a jewish culture and don't
reject the religion, but was wondering if zorn has spoken on this topic.

I caught the Frisell set and the Masada set on Wednesday.
I was a great evening.   For anyone who is a Frisell fan,
trust me--it was incredible!  He fit in and really added to the sound of the
band.
I've seen Masada 8 or 9 times and they always sound great, that night they
sounded like Masada, but with an amazing guitarist who can sit
in with anybody.  This wasnt the first time Frisell has played with
them.

Zorn was definitely psyched to have Bill there (as was everyone
else in the band).  He also let out some great comments throughout the
night. "Come on Bill give it to me! Play that motherfucker!!"  After the
first tune someone told Bill to turn up, then someone said to Bill,
"show us your nasty side" then Zorn says "You can suck his nasty side!"

They did some tunes that arent usually played by Masada, I've got
a setlist, I'm not sure if all the spellings are right, but here it is:

4) Baciarach (sp?)
5) Idalah - abal
6) Hafla'ah
7) Kilayum

Zorn was thanked in the closing credits to Trespass; does anybody know why?
 I remembered this when seeing the upcoming release of soundtrack music for
an "untitled film."

Has anyone heard Makigami Koichi's new solo project on Tzadik?  Is it
worth listening too, if you like Shelley Hirsch, David Moss, Phil Minton
or other vocally experimental musicians?  Are the pieces all by Koichi
or are there pieces by other composers?

2)
At a mail-order site, Take Notes (www.computek.net/tknotes), I saw a listing
for Masada IV (along with 1-3,5,6).  I assume, if he's listing it, he can get
it.  I just thought I'd pass this info along for anyone who is lamenting that
they missed the freebie send-in opportunity and needs their Masada fix.  If
anyone has any more info, please post.

Wow, what a great show.  Zorn really knows how to put a band together.
Frisell is always great, but Anthony Coleman I had never checked out.  He
sounded swell. I had always seen Zorn as more of a conceptualist or an
arranger than a composer, but the dude can write.  Those tunes were
inspiring, and has definitely made me consider buying more Masada CDs.
The KF has all six advertised for $18 a pop (If I remember right).

I find this very hard to believe, unless Masada IV has been reissued or
bootlegged. My copy says "not for sale"  on the back in the lower right.
 Patrice would probably know if its been reissued, and he would have
mentioned it already since I think he's pychic-ly  linked to all Zorn's
releases!

No the Knitting Factory only has 1,2,3,5,6. They do not have 4 (Dalet).

      I did not see the Frisell show, but I did catch 6 Masada shows last
week. They have plenty of material, plus I heard a few tunes that are "new".
Zorn mentioned one being a "world premiere", plus last monday's show featured
new tunes that they seemed to be working out as they went along. I would
assume there will be a Masada 7 in the future..

     Also worthy of mention, Zorn will be performing at the Knitting Factory
Wednesday of this week with Mike Patton at Midnight. In a few weeks he will
also be there performing with his collection of duck calls.

Wow, just the thought of Anthony Coleman playing with Masada makes my
mouth water...don't suppose anyone has a tape of the show (here's
hoping).  Sounds like another reason why I wish I lived near the Knit

Hi Y'all,

I just got a DAT machine (well, two to be able to trade) and am eager to
begin trading soon.  Unfortunately, I've only seen people lurking around the
net groveling for and trading Dead, Phish, God St. Wine, and all that stuff,
or Medeski, Martin & Wood at best.  My interest in this (other than MMW) is
zero.

I'm wondering if anyone out there is taping Knit shows and such "downtown"
type music.  I'm far more interested in creative improvised music such as
will be featured in the Knit's "What is Jazz?" festival (see the schedule at
the Knit's web site -- unbelievable!) than the rock-based aesthetic.

I'll have some choice DATs (masters) to trade soon.  However, I could accept
HQ analogs, too.
