Subject: Article on JZ
There's an essay on a JZ piano piece (with score excerpts) in the most
recent Perspectives of New Music. Check it out!

Subject: Dave Douglas
Douglas' other works available on CD are all fabulous, showcasing an
incredible talent at the early stages of what will hopefuly become an even
more impressive career. He has three discs under his own name... "Parallel
Worlds" from 93 on Soul Note, "The Tiny Bell Trio" from 94 on Songlines, and
"In Our Lifetime" from 95 on New Worlds. He is also a key member of two
ensembles outside of Masada, each with one disc to their credit... with New
And Used he released "Souvenir" on Knitting Factory in 92, and with the
Mosaic Sextet he released "Today, This Moment" on Konnex in 93. Playing in
other people's outfits he has appeared with Vincent Herring on "American
Experience," with Don Byron on "The Music Of Mickey Katz," with Michael
Formanek on "Low Profile," with Mark Dresser on "The Cabinet Of Dr.
Caligari," with Myra Melford on "Even The Sounds Shine," and with Orange Than
Blue on the double disc live set "While You Were Out." Of all of those
titles, the only one which I would not suggest that you rush out and pick up
is the session with Herring, unless of course you are a fan of the style in
which Herring plays (something that is not completely in tune with my
tastes). Other than that, I know that he has some recordings available with
an outfit called Dr. Nerve, but I have yet to hear them myself. -Egg 1000

Subject: new Masada material
I was in NYC on the weekend and stopped into the Downtown Music
Gallery. The owner of the store (who incidentally helped with the
writing of the Zorn discography and seems to have seen an incredible
number of Zorn shows) informed me that Zorn et al would be back in the
studio in a couple of months to record Masada discs hey (5) and vuv
(6). Also, 4 live discs are expected to be released from the recent
Masada tour, including one which was recorded live in Jerusalem. I am
not sure about the former 2 discs but the live material is supposed to
be released through an American company (meaning cheaper prices!).
I hope this guy wasn't just pulling my tail because I sure thought
that this was great news.

Subject: Giant Robot
My copy of Buckethead's Giant Robot CD arrived from CD Now today.
So, you can get it there.
I like it a lot better than Bucketheadland, but not quite as much as the
Praxis albums. Lots of wacky vocal snippets, but much more playing from
Bucket and Bootsy than on Bucketheadland.
I'm not sure if it's worth the $30+ they charge, but it's pretty neat.
Also, for Buckethead fanataics, he appears on one tune of MCM and the
Monster's CD Collective Emotional Problems. Brain drums on the whole CD.
Bucket has a pretty long solo, but in general, the CD is just late 80s Bay
Area Chili Pepper wanna-be-ness.
