  65. I went to check Patrice's discography and was surprised to see it wasn't 
  66. up to date (!).  I think maybe i'm still getting an old version, as i 
  67. find it hard to believe that it would neglect such recent releases as Bar 
  68. Kokhba et al.

  70. Are there going to be more Bar Kokhba's?  The first set is too good to 
  71. deserve a lonely existence on people's CD shelves.

  143. Aussies, I saw one copy in the Basement discs, and 1 in Gaslight.

  181. playing, will be out in the US on November 19, probably around the same
  182. time in Europe and elsewhere.  Filmworks 3 & 4, supposedly already
  183. available in Europe on some label, will be reissued by Tzadik in 1997,
  184. as will Filmworks 1.

  191. Patrice has been on vacation lately.  I think the discography is more up
  192. to date than the latest posted version... he indicated to the Zorn List
  193. recently that it had reached 100 entries.  Hey, let's cut him some
  194. slack, he maintains many, many discographies (Zeena, Ikue, Tim Berne,
  195. Marty Ehrlich, etc.) so he's bound to get behind now and then! :-)

  361. It was back in February that the new studio album was announced.  Because
  362. SubMeta stopped after four releases, it was never finished.  It may be
  363. finished someday.

  365. In the meantime, there is a live CD from a few European performances in the
  366. last six months that will be coming out sometime in the next six months.

  368. Brain, who has always been the drummer for Praxis, is now the drummer for
  369. Primus and I am not sure what role he will play with Praxis in the future.
  370. No-one seems to know, as far as I can tell.

  403. And, by the way, a friend of mine told me who Bar Kokhba was: he was 
  404. regarded by the Jewish people about 2000 years ago or so as the mesiah.  
  405. He led the jews into the mountains to wage guerila warefare on the romans, 
  406. and had some measure of success for a while, but eventualy was defeated, 
  407. since the roman war machine was just too big.  This may not be totally 
  408. correct, but it's the general idea.  Fairly strong set of images which 
  409. John Zorn is applying to his music: "Masada", "Bar Kokhba"...

  424. The video's are available in the states, according to one review I read in
  425. Jazz Times,(and I'll have to take their word for it as I don't think they
  426. are in Australia), and yes, you can play the cd along with the films and
  427. they're supposed to match. I believe he has performed the soundtracks 
  428. live, too.

  430. As a matter of interest, PBS-FM in Melbourne is presenting a two-hour 
  431. special on Frisell tomorrow, which will feature the Keaton albums.

  474. Bobby Previte is one of a growing band of drummer composers, who work 
  475. convincingly in the more advanced areas of jazz, but who also have a 
  476. background in rock,(cf. Joey Barron, Edward Vesala.)
  477.  
  478. Some of his earlier work, such as Music for the Moscow Circus, is less 
  479. than compelling, but since his breakthrough with *Empty Suits* (on 
  480. Gramavision), he's been producing a string of powerful and innovative 
  481. albums. (Although I wouldn't recommend the follw-up *Slay the Suitors*, 
  482. which I thought was boring.)
  483.  
  484. A lot of Previte's best work is on the Enja label.  I'd recommend 
  485. *Weather Clear, Track Fast*, and *Hue and Cry*,  all featuring great 
  486. players like Don Byron, Marty Ehrlich, Anthony Cox, etc.

  488. *Pushing the Envelope* on Gramavision and a new release on Koch are also 
  489. meant to be good, but I haven't heard them.

  528. recorded "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" with Mark Dresser and Dave Douglas,
  529. we made no attempt to sync up with the film. It was a record, so we made a
  530. record. I suspect Frisell & co. did the same unless they made a CD-ROM.

  578. Actually, this is all news to me.  I hadn't heard anything about Bar
  579. Kokhba being deleted and was kinda wondering why everyone was reporting
  580. how few were remaining and in which stores.  I'll try to get an answer

  599. baron?  I borrowed this one a while ago and was, to my utter astonishment,
  600. quite underwhealmed by it.  After hearing his playing on the Masada discs,

  602. stuff would reduce me to a small pile of ash, happily smoking away.

  679. I'd just like to mention that I picked up Bobby Previte's new album "Too 
  680. Close to the Pole" last week and it's great. All that you'd expect from a 
  681. Previte band - dense, driving polyrhythms; punchy horn lines; nice 
  682. compositional development. Most of the players are familiar to me, but I 
  683. hadn't heard of trumpeter Cuong Vu before. On this evidence, he's very 
  684. good (with a Dave Douglas-like sense of formalism and huge harmonic 
  685. chops). Laster and D'Angelo also play great, and you can hear Lindsey 
  686. Horner quoting from old Zappa basslines. What fun. Be sure to hang 
  687. around, too, for the unlisted track 7.

  707. I just got this album, which somehow has the reputation of being
  708. the most unlistenable album of all time--great, great stuff.
  709. Anyway, there are a lot more instruments than people playing, 
  710. which means that  either a) they overdubbed, which seems odd
  711. for a no wave album from about '80, especially as it might seem
  712. to take more technical proficiency than these folks had,
  713. or b) they had more people on the album. The listed personnel
  714. are:
  715. Sumner Crane: vocal, guitar, piano, percussion
  716. Don Burg: Bass clarinet, vocal on one track
  717. Mark Cunningham: Horns
  718. Ikue Mori: Strings, percussion on two tracks
  719. Arlindo & Dantas Lins: percussion on one track (one that Mori
  720. is credited with percussion on)
  721.  
  722. There are often more than one brass instrument (one's always
  723. a trombone, I think), and sometimes strings, percussion, and
  724. piano or guitar at the same time. I think; instrumentation
  725. isn't easiest to decipher. Does anyone know whether this was
  726. overdubbed or had more players, and if so who?
  727.  
  728. (Burg is clearly a woman and no doubt the China Burg who
  729. plays guitar and vocal for Mars. Crane was Mars's other 
  730. guitarist/vocalist; Cunningham, who produced John Gavanti,
  731. the bassist. Any info about the future fate of these 
  732. geniuses whose commercial appeal was sabotaged by inaccurate
  733. press would also be welcome.)

  858. Picture of Light by Peter Mettler features a soundtrack by both of them.

  886. Zorn in it.  There's also an interview with Zorn in William Duckworth's
  887. Talking Music.

  889. Both of these books are useful in their dealings with Zorn 'cause there's
  890. relatively little fannish worship.

  1031. He recorded an album with Alfred Harth called Indianer Fur Morgan which was
  1032. quite excellent and is unavailable, aprt from some tracks on a Japanese import
  1033. (which also includes the great Peking Oper which Otomo has recently
  1034. re-interpreted) Previous to this they had a big band called something like
  1035. Soganantes (something) Orchestra.

  1037. Now he is a composer more than performer with things like Shadow (Landscape
  1038. with Argonauts), Man in an Elevator, Prometheus Unbound (which they performed
  1039. in London recently amongst other pieces). He used to work a lot with German
  1040. playright Heiner Muller (deceased) and has contributed to seminars at the ICA
  1041. on text in music/theater.

  1043. His work seems to be informed by the radical left-wing theatre of Germany
  1044. which spawned Fassbinder and is wonderful theatre in itself.

  1065. Kermit getting fired, according to the Frisell cover story in Down Beat
  1066. some months ago, Joey wanted to leave to spend more time on his own
  1067. projects, and Bill didn't really have any motivation to get a new drummer
  1068. and pretend it was all the same.  It was for that reason that the trio
  1069. sort of 'disbanded' at that point and Bill formed his new quartet.

  1094. visiting NYC a while ago.  His photos could certainly be quite at home on 
  1095. the cover of a Naked City or Painkiller album - they're absolutely 
  1096. amazing.

  1099. that the titles and pictures for a few albums coincide with art books 
  1100. that coame out around the same period (Absinthe was one, i'm told).  It

  1231. years. Goebbels recorded various people on the street in Boston reading
  1232. passages from Edgar Allen Poe and Heiner Muller, mixing them together with
  1233. musical passages.  Definitely worth checking out.

  1235. "Ensemble Modern" is an interesting collection of modern classical compositions.

  1372. regularly.  I think there is a good relationship with Sony for jazz stuff.
  1373. Unfortunately, the small labels that put out so much good experimental stuff
  1374. are not usually well funded and don't have enough personnel to effectively
  1375. manage promotion and distribution.

  1547. solo CD with Anton producing, about a year ago.  It is very quiet and almost
  1548. folky.  She did one a few years before that, but I haven't heard it and I

  1595. traditional, early jazz stuff as well as being on one of the first of
  1596. Chadbourne's Parachute records.

  1764. The music performances have been curated by Boston based independent cura=
  1765. tor Gillian Levine and the Boston Creative Music Alliance, a non-profit o=
  1766. rganization for the presentation for new music. The musicians featured in=
  1767.  this series seek to create new formal contexts for improvisations that s=
  1768. ubvert traditional ethnic, racial, or cultural boundaries. Through their =
  1769. choice of material, they create framework that explore and define new rel=
  1770. ationships between composer and performer and personal and cultural ident=
  1771. ity. The use of improvisation as a performance practise insures that the =
  1772. performers are an integral part of an ongoing dialogue that refines and r=
  1773. edefines these relationships each time a piece is played.

  1776. <B><I>Masada. </B></I>New York City  composer and performer John Zorn has=
  1777.  been described as "A one man musical revolution...all over the stylistic=
  1778.  map". Masada, a quartet featuring Zorn on alto sax, Dave Douglas on trum=
  1779. pet, basist Greg Cohen, and long time collaborator Joey Barron on drums. =
  1780. Often moving in a minor-key world of lament and augmented with the intens=
  1781. ity of Zorn's vision, Masada establishes a common ground between Hebraic =
  1782. music and African American jazz. =

  1806. <B><I>Make a Move Quintet. </B></I>Henry Threadgill refuses to call his w=
  1807. ork jazz. "Jazz is part of my vocabulary...(but) I consider myself an int=
  1808. ernational musician." Coming out of the Chicago Association for the Advan=
  1809. cement of Creative Musicians (AACM) of the '60s, he made waves with his f=
  1810. irst avant jazz trio <I>Air</I>, an interactive group that recorded twelv=
  1811. e albums, toured internationally, and remained together until the mid-80s=
  1812. =2E Switching to a larger unit, the<I> Henry Threadgill Sextett</I>, allo=
  1813. wed the composer to widen his exploration of instrumental roles and range=
  1814. s while blending a variety of musical styels into his repertoire. Since 1=
  1815. 989 Threadgill's main vehicle has been <I>Very Very Circus</I>, a septet =
  1816. he named for its likeness to a multi-ringed circus with "so many things g=
  1817. oing on at once". The latest ensemble with Brandon Ross (guitar), Tony Ce=
  1818. dras (accordion and harmonium), Stomi Takeishi (bass), J.T. Lewis (drums)=
  1819.  and the leader (saxophone and flute) again brings unique instrumental so=

  1828. wing upon musical styles ranging from jazz to gospel, blues to funk. An a=
  1829. ccomplished actress, she has three films to her credit: Spike Lees' <I>Sc=
  1830. hool Daze</I>; a leading role in Julie Dash's <I>Daughters of the Dust</I=
  1831. >, and most recently in Shu Lea Cheang's <I>Fresh Kill</I>, an Eco-Cybern=
  1832. oia film. Alva Rogers has also written for and performed in a great varie=

  1961. Totally shocked to find this one in Other Music in NYC last Saturday
  1962. (shameless plug for a fab store).  I'm only about halfway through but
  1963. it's quite the informative bit of history for those of us who weren't 
  1964. there for the germinative years of Zorn.  Primitive recording quality
  1965. (but quite listenable), strikes me a bit like "Classic Guide to
  1966. Strategy" splattering into "Book of Heads" in a dark room.  Four
  1967. tracks, ranging from 10 minutes to 20.  Nice brief note from Eugene
  1968. reveals that he and Zorn split $30 for one of these gigs.  Recorded 
  1969. in 1980.  If you don't find Incus in stores near you write to 
  1970. 14 Downs Road, London E5 8DS England.  (Also just out is "S&M,"
  1971. a duo disc by highly regarded free guitarist Roger Smith and 
  1972. flutist Neil Metcalfe (haven't listened to this yet).

  2270. My somewhat informed guess on this is that the Avant catalog is currently in
  2271. a type of limbo. Rumor has it they're in negotiations with Koch for
  2272. distribution, which won't affect prices but may help with availability. Until
  2273. this is resolved, I don't think Avant discs are being distributed. This is
  2274. why it's impossible to find the Derek Bailey jungle record, at least here in
  2275. NYC. I'm sure Steve Smith can shed more light on this topic.

  2527. has done...his sound lends itself very much to country music and
  2528. American-folk harmony (a la Copland) in many ways.

  2867. Disc One: Loud, aggressive, almost thrashy stuff, pretty hardcore.  Disc Two
  2868. is labeled ambient and is some of the darkest ambient around.  Good stuff.

  2885. DEEP) on bass, and zorn on sax.  Their older stuff (Guts of a virgin & 
  2886. Buried secrets) are basically spastic fits of chaos and emotion, and I 
  2887. LOVE THEM!  Execution ground is my favorite.  first off, GO BUY IT!
  2888. the first disc starts spastic (one of the best album intros i've ever 
  2889. heard) and moves on into deathy ambient dub (DEEP BASS ala laswell).  
  2890. there's 3 songs, and each are awesome.  Laswell's influence is more clear 
  2891. on this album (especially since the other disc in the set is ambient, and 
  2892. equally as awesome).  I could go on, but you should just get it & love 
  2893. it.  I do.  Also, everyone needs at least on copy of (Pleasanton, CA 
  2894. locals) Smashing Lenny's mellons & a band called WALSHSTONE.  ok. that's all.

  3045. CD's really grow on you with repeated listening. I've grown very
  3046. attached to that innocent-sweet-playful- voice of Lori Carson...to the
  3047. point where I have to get her solo CD's.

  3353. I don't know the Strata recording but feel compelled to add my 2ó worth
  3354. regarding one of the more interesting surprises of last year's
  3355. purchases:
  3356. the Sub Rosa disc "Skinner's Black Box," which is half Andy Hawkins 
  3357. (Azonic) and half Justin Broadrick (Godflesh).  I'm not the biggest fan
  3358. of Blind Idiot God or Godflesh but I picked this up as it's part of the
  3359. swell Subsonic series, which is always at least interesting.  While it's
  3360. the Justin Broadrick stuff that really knocked me for a loop (icy cold
  3361. bleak technoscrape guitar), I remember the Azonic stuff being pleasant
  3362. enough (and distinctly seem to remember tabla drums in the mix...).
  3363.  
  3364. For anyone who hasn't seen this series yet, it's up to its fourth
  3365. release.
  3366. There's a Fred Frith/Mark Ribot split CD in a yellow jewelcase, a Bill

  3398. development.  If you like it you should check out its predecessor,
  3399. "The Ancestors," which adds the always-worthwhile Ray Anderson
  3400. to the mix.  (Also, for those looking for the first two 
  3401. LPs "The Five Year Plan" and "7X," Tim just found several boxes
  3402. of sealed copies in his basement and sold them to Little Brother,
  3403. a label and distributor based in Portland.)

  3405. I don't know how widely this is known, but the long-awaited 
  3406. reissue of the Tim Berne/Bill Frisell duo CD "Theoretically" 
  3407. hit stores on Tuesdaythe 15th, as did a Koch Jazz reissue of 
  3408. the deleted Columbia title "Fulton Street Maul" which featured 
  3409. Berne, Frisell, Hank Roberts and Alex Cline.
  3410.  
  3411. "Fulton Street Maul" is a dense, challenging record, and one
  3412. that I'm particularly pleased to have convinced my company to
  3413. reissue.  "Sanctified Dreams," a truly excellent introduction
  3414. to Tim's work, is due for reissue in March.
  3415.  
  3416. Tim really came into his own during his years on JMT, further 
  3417. refining the raucous, angular, funky style he's known for now.  
  3418. "Fractured Fairy Tales" is a great place to start, but be advised
  3419. that a lot of the JMT stuff is currently out of print and may
  3420. be completely unavailable for a long time.  In particular, if
  3421. you see the two albums by Miniature (Berne plus Roberts and Baron)
  3422. grab 'em before they're gone.
  3423.  
  3424. The Blood Count discs on JMT are still widely available, and 
  3425. feature Tim with a really strong working band of Chris Speed, 
  3426. Mike Formanek and Jim Black, with special guest Marc Ducret on
  3427. electric guitar.  The feature that stands out to many is the
  3428. extraordinary length of the tunes -- from 15 or 20 minutes to
  3429. 40 or even nearly 50! -- but these are suites of sustained 
  3430. invention and multiple moods, and for this admittedly strongly
  3431. biased listener they never get dull.  Start with the track 
  3432. "The Other" for a great intro to this band.
  3433.  
  3434. Tim's got two new projects coming soon.  JMT's successor
  3435. label, Winter and Winter, will be issuing a trio record called
  3436. Big Satan which features Berne with Marc Ducret and Tom Rainey.
  3437. So far Winter and Winter has yet to find an American distributor
  3438. but I'm sure they will get one by the time this record is due
  3439. in February.

  3444. The other project, one I'm personally involved with, is Tim's 
  3445. return to self-released independence.  He's got a new label,
  3446. ScrewGun, which I'm helping him run.  We plan to have the
  3447. first release available by December.  We hope to have it in all 
  3448. the better jazz and alternative stores, we'll do mailorder and
  3449. have a website, and he'll be selling the disc on his Bloodcount
  3450. tour next spring.  It's called "Bloodcount Unwound" and is 
  3451. a three CD set of live Bloodcount recordings from Berlin and
  3452. Ann Arbor, recorded in 1995 without Ducret.  Very little material 
  3453. is repeated from the JMT releases, and there are some seriously 
  3454. stomping new pieces like "Mr. Johnson's Blues."  Three discs in a 
  3455. letter-pressed cardboard box, retailing for $30.  (We gave up
  3456. on the idea of a latex package to keep the costs down...)  The
  3457. mastering was done by David Torn over the last two weeks and is
  3458. said to be extraordinary (I've not heard the finished master yet).
  3459.  
  3460. We have lots of plans for future ScrewGun releases by Tim and
  3461. other artists, and Tim plans to keep the prices as low as possible.

  3478. This depends on how much you like drums 'n' bass, which on this list may be
  3479. an interesting question.  I really like when I'm in the right mood.  You
  3480. wouldn't want to listen to this while waiting for the results of a pregnancy
  3481. test, for example.  In other words, it is frenetic drums 'n' bass with a
  3482. little synth stuff thrown in.  Ninj is certainly one of the best
  3483. practitioners in this genre, and it is far more interesting than a lot of
  3484. other stuff.

  3486. However, for Zorn listers, Tetragramaton: _Submerge_ might be far more
  3487. desirable.  This mixes up the beats a little more, with some drums 'n' bass
  3488. and showcases Bayard Lancaster and Graham Haynes on two long Material
  3489. tracks.  Fairly typical Laswell treatments on the horn tracks, so purists
  3490. (can't imagine there are all that many on this list) beware, amazing
  3491. incorporation of electronic beats tracks with Indian drone with ambient
  3492. synth with horns.  The other three tracks (one from Fullcone, one from DJ
  3493. Spooky, one from David Quinlan and DJ Soul Slinter) fall more-or-less in the
  3494. trip hop genre.

  3589. Yesterday nite, I experienced Zorn's Cobra for the first time.
  3590.  
  3591. Before that, I have no experience with the rules of Cobra nor have I heard
  3592. any of the released Cobra CDs, so I went to the show with no pre-concept of
  3593. what it's all about, but I was very excited about it because I know I'll be
  3594. surprised and surprised I did!!
  3595.  
  3596. The show was held in The Continental in South Yarra in the City of
  3597. Melbourne. The place was packed at around 9:30pm. BTW, no tickets were
  3598. available on the nite, it was completely sold out.
  3599.  
  3600. The musicians involved in this show were members of Mr. Bungle (who's
  3601. currently touring Oz), and others. Sorry I'm not very familiar with Mr.
  3602. Bungle (except Mike Patton who was present) and the other musicians so I
  3603. can't list any names.
  3604.  
  3605. Two performance were made before the start of Cobra. The first, lasting at
  3606. about 30 mins features a double bass-player, a gong player and a prompter
  3607. who also fiddled with a sampler (? - not sure what it was, but it made some
  3608. weird noises) and also rubbing a beer bottle against some stylofone (sp?)
  3609. which made some horrible screeching noise (imagine scratching the blackboard
  3610. with your finger nails and having it amplified a 100 times....YUCK!!!). This
  3611. piece was kinda interesting, the prompter signals to each musicians what to
  3612. play, what intensity to play, and when to stop. Off course, there won't any
  3613. groove happening, each musician basically "improvised" when promted. I
  3614. thought the ending was really cool as the gong player hammers the gong,
  3615. building up a college of sound ending this performance with a bang.
  3616.  
  3617. The second performance involved Mike Patton on "sampler"-thingy and a
  3618. percussionist (same guy who played the gong earlier) who played a variety of
  3619. Asian percussion such as a Korean flower drum, some Chinese ritual cymbals
  3620. etc. In this performance, the duo created an atmosphere similar to a
  3621. Japanese traditional opera. Patton chants and mumble emotionally like an Jap
  3622. opera singer while the percussionist beats the drums. It's hard to explain
  3623. since I'm no expert in Jap trad music, but it's really deep. Some members of
  3624. the audience were laughing away because Patton was basically "singing" in
  3625. gibberish, but both of them were really serious about what they were doing
  3626. and also with the atmosphere they were creating. This made me think about
  3627. how these days the more adventurous western musicians (Derek Bailey,
  3628. Laswell, Zorn etc) are incorporating Eastern influences into their
  3629. experiments/improvisations while the Eastern world are trying to become more
  3630. Westernised.
  3631.  
  3632. The 2nd performance lasted approx 30mins again.
  3633.  
  3634. Then the game started. There were, from left of stage to the right, a
  3635. trombone/saxophone/duck-wistle player, a cellist, a drummer, an electric
  3636. bass player, another drummer, an acoustic guitar player, a double bass
  3637. player, Patton on "sampler"-thingy and voice, a flute/saxphone player and a
  3638. keyboard/sampler player. All these musicians were on the stage and the
  3639. game-master/prompter person is standing off stage. Bare in mind that the
  3640. Continetal is not exactly a huge place, therefore there won't a lot of space
  3641. to move around.
  3642.  
  3643. Again, I'm not familiar with how thing works in Cobra so I spend a whole lot
  3644. of time figuring out what happened or what the hand signals and cards meant.
  3645. (Anyone care to share the rules of the game?). All in all, they played, I
  3646. think, 5 sets of games, and were asked to do another one from the
  3647. enthusiastic audience. The entire set took close to 1:30hrs. 
  3648. The best part of Cobra is to see the musicians enjoying themselves on stage
  3649. as well as the audience. Since all pieces were done on the spot, we didn't
  3650. know what to expect. I think that's the reason why I felt that Cobra is
  3651. exciting.
  3652.  
  3653. In summary, a great nite of truely improvised music. A lot of the people who
  3654. attended the show expected more Mr Bungle material but were truely shocked
  3655. with what's going on. I've been dying to attend a concert similar to all the
  3656. great European imrpovisation festivals such as Comapny and I must say this
  3657. comes close (IMHO).

  3678. My favorite disc by Berne is Fractured Fairytales. It's more controlled
  3679. than his recent stuff, but that is a good thing.  I find his playing with 
  3680. Bloodcount to be a little noodley sometimes. In general I've always
  3681. thought that Tim Berne was a much stronger composer than improviser, and
  3682. he's one of my favorite composers. The first Chaos Totale is great too. It 
  3683. features some strong playing by Marc Ducret and Bobby Previte.
  3684. Bassist,Mark Dresser (one of my all-time faves) plays his buns off on this
  3685. one. By the way, I just got Invocation, Dresser's new solo CD. I like it,

  3890. jumbled up, or I copied the # down wrong.   After some tracking down, I 
  3891. found that the actual office number for the Institute of Contemporary arts 
  3892. in Cambridge Mass (the site of Zorn's Masada on Nov. 13th 8:00 pm, thursday) 
  3893. is (617) 927-6620.  The lady I asked about tickets was quite not with it, so 
  3894. I will persist in calling again soon.

  3896. A few questions: 1)  I am still doing a three hour radio special on the 
  3897. music of Mike Patton, and I need to obtain some of the more obscure albums

  3965. Henry Hill, a filmmaker, came through Pittsburgh a year or so
  3966. ago, showing films that included videos for "Batman" and "Igneous
  3967. Ejaculation" from the first Naked City album, and Zorn's version
  3968. of "Das Kleines Leutnant des Lieben Gottes" off the Hal Willner
  3969. Kurt Weill tribute, "Lost in the Stars." (I believe "Batman" was
  3970. the only one that was intended for use on MTV.) Anyway, the 
  3971. advance publicity advertised "Heretic" starring Karen Finley,
  3972. but it wasn't shown; Hill said his copy was being recut.
  3973.  
  3974. So either it exists, or Hill is in on the joke--to tell the
  3975. truth, he seemed like a sort of serious guy who probably 
  3976. wouldn't initiate the prank at least. Might help you track
  3977. this down. ("Little Lieutenant" was really cool, BTW.)

  4044.     The zorn-list and zorn-list-digest had a mini-crisis
  4045.     last night/this morning. During some hardware upgrades
  4046.     at our host xmission.com, the subscriber list got
  4047.     blown away.  The owner of xmission.com replaced the
  4048.     subscription list from a tape backup made on
  4049.     September 6, 1996.
  4050.  
  4051.     Luckily, I had a list backup from October 16th on
  4052.     my machine. I was able to hack in (and out) the
  4053.     names of people that I know subscribed and unsubscribed
  4054.     in between the 16th and today.
  4055.  
  4056.     However, it is entirely possible that I missed
  4057.     someone. So if someone you know used to be getting
  4058.     zorn-list mail, but isn't anymore (or vice-versa)

  4205. bands from other Masada cds to Disk Union and they would send it to me for

  4207. me saying that there weren't any left. Does anyone know if it is ever going

  4228. Mark Dresser is too one of my favorites of all time.  Invocation is
  4229. very Bert Turetzky influenced and I believe he gives him credit as a
  4230. pivotal influence in his musical career on the liner notes. (Mark
  4231. was also  a student of his).  Bert is my favorite and is the father of 
  4232. contmporary bass music which gaps classical, improv and jazz into one.
  4233. As a bored classically trained, still somewhat frightened to death to
  4234. improvise bassist, music of such composers like turetzky, as well as
  4235. Joelle Leandre, Robert Black and this disc from Dresser is very
  4236. exciting and inspirational to me.  Although I must admit, Invocation
  4237. falls somewhat short for me but the track, Threnody for Charles
  4238. Mingus, makes up for anything I feel this disc lacks.  
  4239. Check out some Joelle Leandre if you like this album because she kicks
  4240. ass.  (Highly recommend th album Urban Bass is you can find it) She
  4241. also has a jazz trio that is pretty wacked out.

  4302. Welcome to the list.  To answer your question, Zorn's people have said 
  4303. pretty defintively that Masada 4 will never be reissued by itself.  
  4304. However, I've heard more than one person suggest that the entire Masada 
  4305. series would be repackaged as a box set for Tzadik, and that 4 would be 
  4306. included in that box.  Again, I can't say that that's definitely the 
  4307. case, and your best bet for getting a copy is to ask someone on the Zorn 
  4308. List to tape it for you.  It's only about 20 minutes long, BTW, so don't 
  4309. pay anybody an extortionist's fee for it.

  4492. I'm not very familiar with really early Zorn stuff, but there are three
  4493. pre-_The Big Gundown_ albums I would unhesitatingly recommend:

  4495. _Locus Solus_: DNA-influenced trio improv, including some improvised songs
  4496. vocalized by Peter Blegvad and Arto Lindsay.  One of my all-time favorite
  4497. Zorn records.  I believe this had been reissued on Tzadik.
  4498.  
  4499. _Yankees_: More traditional baseball-influenced improv with Derek Bailey
  4500. and George Lewis.  I'm not sure if this is currently in print, but the
  4501. Celluloid CD seems to show up a lot.
  4502.  
  4503. _The Classic Guide to Strategy_: Excellent solo improv.  I first heard
  4504. this one with the Tzadik reissue, and I was very pleasantly surprised by
  4505. how well Zorn sustains interest all by himself.  He takes a very different
  4506. approach than one finds on other solo improv recordings.  It's actually
  4507. organized similarly to many of his compositions, in that he jumpcuts from
  4508. one soundblock to another very rapidly at times, and betrays a marked Carl
  4509. Stalling influence.
  4510.  
  4511. Also, while it actually postdates _The Big Gundown_, you should certainly
  4512. check out the version of _Cobra_ on Hat Hut if you haven't already done
  4513. so.  It's certainly the most effective recording of a game piece readily
  4514. available on CD.  I assume that this has recently gone out of print, along
  4515. with most of Hat Hut's back catalogue, but it should be easy to find.
  4516.  
  4517. Finally, the first, self-titled Golden Palominos album on which Zorn plays
  4518. a major role, is a fantastic fusion of downtown improv with _On the
  4519. Corner_-period Miles Davis, and is not to be missed.  I'm not sure if this
  4520. is available on CD.

  4629. I saw a Bobby Previte album in a local record shop (London Canada) by
  4630. Bobby Previte with a title along the lines of Blood..Shriek..Mutilation;
  4631. (I'm pretty sure that that's wrong, but it gets the general feel).  It was
  4632. released on Koch Jazz and apparently was a one-man project by Previte for
  4633. a film.  Does anyone have anything to say about this recording?
