Can anyone fill me in on this?- I had no idea that Kaiser and Zorn are in
opposition.  If anything I'd expect there to be a common ground between
them, both having worked so broadly in the electro-acoustic world, and both
being excellent improvisers.  At least I'm glad to hear that their
animosity doesn't carry over to the stage.

And I just heard it come out of Branford's lips- this Wednesday NPR's "Jazz
Set" will feature an excerpt from a Masada concert!!  This will be aired on
88.3 WBGO in Newark, I dont know if the schedule is the same for other
stations, but check it out!

Well I'm very into Human Feel.  They are: Andrew D'angelo-Alto/b.clarinet;
Chris Speed-tenor/clarinet; Kurt Rosenwinkle-guitar; Jim Black-drums.
As far as I know they all met in Boston while attending Berklee, but moved
to NYC a few years back.  Gunther Schuller produced their first CD
"Scatter" which features a bass player:Joe Fitzgerald.  They have 2 other
CDs out now, and are all enjoyable by me.  Each one seems more focused
than the last.  They seem to be the most bandy of all bands that exist in
NEw York. I think they all lived together until recently.  They all do
other projects but HF seems to be a major thing for all of them.
Shit, I could be their press secretary!

The last, and I think only, time Masada was in Phila was at the Khyber Pass
about three years ago. Marc Ribot on guitar. Great show, why hasn't this
version of the band ever been documented?

Hey.
        Umm, yeah, his name is Yamatsuka (or Yamatanka? or??) Eye. His
band, the Boredoms, are, how to put this, REALLY FUCKIN' GREAT! Seriously,
the Boredoms live are quite amazing. Their "style", "sound" or whatever is
all over the map. Some very silly, some studio-noise, some bad disco, and a
lot of very good music, blended like a trashier-influenced Naked City
through the Japanese culture filter. May I humbly suggest Wow 2, a
live-in-the-studio album. It's an import, but if you can find it used, DO
NOT PASS IT UP!! Soul Discharge, on Shimmy Disc is pretty great, and Pop
Tatari, on Warner(?!?) is good too. A warning, they are firm beleivers in
Eno's studio-as-an-instrument idea.
        There is an Eye/Zorn disc out on Tzadik, which I have heard once at
work, but it didn't exactly knock my socks off. Eye, I've been told, often
makes some extra money selling tapes of whatever he felt like screaming
into the mike that day. One of a kind items, as it were. This thought kept
popping into my head while listening to the Zorn/Eye CD. But maybe that's
just me.
        Once your toes are in the water, good luck, your wallet will need
it. Eye has at least three other side projects besides the Boredoms and
Naked City (may I reccomend UFO Or Die - Cassettetape Superstar), and the
rest of the band likewise. Mostly imports and hard to find.
        And while I'm here, might as well mention Eyvand Kang, DJ Olive and
William Hooker ripped some shit up. Hooker and Olive have been touring and
in Seattle were joined by Eyvand Kang, apparently never before having met
or played with Hooker. Hooker said "..who I've never met, but know in
spirit..." and that kinda summed it up.
        And while I'm still here, I've heard the Sun City Girls (any other
SCG fans out there?) might be doing a gamelan orchestra show with members
of the Boredoms here in Seattle, and I wouldn't be suprised if Eyvand
showed up there as well. Not a show to be taken lightly.
        Sorry if I got carried away, but it's the Boredoms, whaddya expect.

        No surprise when she got off at the next stop.

His name is Yamataka (formerly Yamatsuka, but he changed it) Eye, and he
can be sound on every album by his band the Boredoms... all highly
innovative and recommended.  He's also got two albums in duet with Zorn
on Tzadik.  "Nani Nani" (credited to Dekoboko Hajime and "Yamantaka
Eye") is the most like what you've heard in the Naked City context,
while "Zohar" (credited to the Mystic Fugu Orchestra) sounds like
nothing either of them has ever done before -- actually it sounds like
Jewish cantors recorded in the 1920s, complete with faked surface
noise.  And of course there's the new 100 CD box set by Zorn and Eye on
Sound Factory (no kidding)...  Wish I coulda sprung for that but decided
to make my car payment instead...

Eye can also be found on recordings by his side groups Hanatarash and
UFO or Die, and he's contributed to recordings by Otomo Yoshihide and
his group Ground Zero (particularly the amazing Ground Zero album on God
Mountain records, which also features Zorn).

It's probably tough to find by now, but the last issue of Resonance
Magazine from England had a great Boredoms article with a painfully
complete Eye discography - it also came packaged with an exclusive live
7" by Eye and Otomo.

I think it's completely solo.  It's pretty quiet and refined, kind of
chambery.  The most interesting part (to me) was the wide variety of
"ethnic" instruments Lanier plays (mostly Asian).  The unusual sounds were
interesting, and the music wasn't bad, but it hasn't compelled me to sit
and listen more carefully either.

No. Jim Black is a young (27, I think) drummer from Seattle who's been on
the Boston/New York scene for a couple of years.
Black also plays drums in Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio, in Human Feel and
in the Ben Monder Trio.

Jim Black does play in Boodcount but he's only in his late twenties, so

Zorn's Locus Solus):  playing it on the radio, writing reviews for numerous
publications, doing interviews (Borbetomagus to Joe Morris), publishing a
contact listing of relevant addresses, attending concerts, etc.

The point i was trying to get across--and didn't succeed too well since
others have had a similar reaction to your's--is that like anything most free
improv isn't likely to appeal to people who aren't already interested (which
is, of course, not really a drawback since the same could be said of anything
from string quartets to zydeco).  Such people were exactly who i was trying
to address, assuming that people already interested in Zorn or Bailey don't
much care what i think (the only reason i posted it to the Zorn group was
because somebody had asked what it was like).   Free improvisors can fall
into the same generic ruts as any musicians.  In fact, my biggest complaint
about free improv isn't the music itself but the claims that it is somehow a
superior way of making music, reasoning that no rules is (a) politically more
progressive and (b) more conducive to artistic expression.  The same
arguments have been used for free verse and it's the word "free" that seems
to be part of the problem.  I guess what i'm trying to say is that free
improv often works in spite of itself and that we should try to help
potential listeners into the music.

By the way, Option reviewers have no choice in what they are assigned.  The
editors try to match tastes/background but they don't always succeed.

I must say i agree with Lang Thompson, while I am also a huge fan of the improv scene,
I must add that RECORDINGS never come anything close to the live experiance
I have found this to be true of all music, but especially true for improvisational music
for instance, Seeing Conspiracy (UK) was nothing like all the tapes bandmember Barry
pilcher sent to us, same for Brotzmann, etc.etc....

After a live show, i always have a greater appreciation for the music.....

I once coaxed some Gen-X'rs to go to a Brotzmann show with me
before the date,I lent all kinds of cds for a listen, they hated the discs
But went wild at the concert......so did I
now they are big BIG fans......

and there's was nothing like a Sun Ra show

Damn, I can't believe it! John Zorn is playing next door to where I work,
this is awesome. I have never had the pleasure of seeing any of Zorn's
projects live (I remembered Naked City playing U. Penn 4 or 5 years ago,
but I didn't find out about it until it was too late). I walked over to
see if this info was right (it sounded too good to be true), and it's
advertised on the board outside. Too bad it's not on a week night, or I
could walk over right after work. Well, I hope to see some of you at the
show. Hopefully there will be enough people there to convince Zorn to
come back more often.

In the same way that some people's conversation can become stiff and
wooden as a result of continual re-use of stale topics, phrases,
opinions, etc., or as a result of various primate dominance patterns
and mis-communications, free improvisations can be bad for similar
reasons.  It is the responsibility of the performer to seek out the
proper situations where truly inspired musical conversations can
occur, and to cultivate the necessary mechanical, mental and spiritual
skills in themselves to be able to have "something to say" in a
musical conversation.  Also, a conversation that is exciting to
some people can be annoying, boring, or infuriating to other people.

Objecting to free improvisation on the grounds that some or much of it
is bad is like objecting to human conversations because some or many
of them are bad.

Free improvisation is not music with no rules (rules meaning some
sort of organizing principles or other).  That is a misconception,
not as funny but just as incorrect as the idea some people had that
free jazz was a concert that you didn't have to pay to get into.  The
rules, conscious or not, are essential for there to be coherence to
the music.

It's not that there are no rules as much as the rules are selected
on the fly from the various bags of tools available to the performers.
Free improvisation is in fact the only way to have a real musical
conversation with other players.  Scripted music, like theater, is
for the most part stamped by the personality of the script writer
(the composer or playwright), and the only way for the group
identity to assert itself, and for individual personalities to be
fully explored, is through a conversational process of discovery.

Hi.  I had a question about the "Naked City" cd by John Zorn.
On track 10, the first of the 6 or 7 speed metal cuts, there's a strange
sound in the background as the guitar and bass hammer out the first few
beats before the drums and maniac vocals come in.  After a few seconds of
everything jamming and a short screech of feedback, you can hear this
strange noise again, and it sounds like it's being sped up, maybe with
some vocal sounds layered into it somehow.
My question is, does anyone know what this is and how it was done.  It's
a really cool effect whatever it is.  Thanks for the information.

I think that is Frisell speeding up his delay pedal, or maybe not, but I

Its 42:46. The music is good, not great. I've got the 'radio edit' album
as well as the CD. I havn't listend to the LP in qite some time, but i
seem to remember it being a cut-up. Tracks combined and shortened to
gain some airplay.
