is? All I know is the following lineups from the Zornfest. I saw that there
is a "NTIEABB" cd to be released on Avant, I hope this is also the lineup for
it, 'cause it looks great.

film directors from the famous (Godard, Cronenberg, Walter Hill) to the
infamous (Raul Ruiz, Maria Beatty, Hiroki Ryuichi)." What did he do in
relation to David Cronenberg?

Well, i don't know what the relation between zorn and cronenberg
is...perhaps zorn did some some work for the latest cronenberg movie
'crash', based on the infamous j.g.ballard book of the same name.  Rumour
has it that it's the most extreme movie he's ever done, so i'd say zorn
would be a perfect choice for the soundtrack :)

Ed Price put Zorn's comments concerning this project when reviewing the ZornFest
event during September 1993. I remember that they are game pieces for a very
small set of players (duo, trio, etc as opposed to Cobra).

And didn't Ballard prefaced the Research reissue of TORTURE GARDEN (LE JARDIN
DES SUPPLICES) by French writer Octave Mirbeau? Another possible remote
indirect connection :-)

i saw this during the 93 festival and wasn't really into it. it was surely my
least favorite thing in the festival, then again if i remember correctly, it
came the day after four straight nights of naked city (2 sets/night) so
exhaustion may explain my relative lack of zeal.

i've got two of his discs.  "hank roberts & birds of prey" (1990, JMT)
doesn't do much for me--a bit too pop.  "black pastels" (1988, JMT, w/ tim
berne, ray anderson, robin eubanks, dave taylor, mark dresser, frisell &
baron) is about half great.  some of the tracks are fantastic, but others
suffer a lot when roberts starts to sing.  i program my way around the stuff
that annoys me.

i may be way off but i thought i had spotted arto lindsay in the new
budwiser commercial. It's the one where there's a guy in the parking
lot and he's calling for help and demanding people to call 911, etc.
because his beer is locked inside his boiling temperature car.  well,
in a brief second, this maniac grabs this skinny guy that resembles
arto (same hair, glasses, but a wee bit shorter than i imagine arto
to be) and starts yelling and then the arto look alike takes off
running.  It's real breif but i could have sworn it was him.  and
also, doesn't arto already have connections with budweiser through
the ambitious lovers tune that was featured in one of their
commercials---patrice, is that correct?  that connection may be why
i'm jumping to conclusions.  it doesn't seem very likely that arto
would take off time to do a beer commercial, but has anyone else seen
it?

In the latest issue of Down Beat, there's a critic's poll.  Under the
"Electric Jazz Group, Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" category, behind
Medeski, Martin & Wood and the Charlie Hunter Trio, the number three group,
with 36 votes, is "John Zorn's Naked City."

Hmmm, Naked City played their last gig in Sept. 1993.  Think we should alert
the critics or let them continue their slumber?

At first I thought it was simply a case of a data entry error, and that they
meant "John Zorn's Masada," as Masada is pretty well thought of by the
jazzbo critics.

But Masada is an acoustic group.

I knew Down Beat sucked.

Yes, you are correct.

Around 1989-1991, there was on radio a Budweiser ad with The Ambitious
Lovers' music (I verified with Arto Lindsay that it was really the A.L.
(although I never doubted it was them :-)).

I certainly can [provide information on Ruins]...seeing as how their music
is an obsession beyond all bounds with me, more important than food, drink,
or fleshly pleasures...well, I exaggerate.  But the Ruins are about the
only band my love of which would compell me to laboriously type up a
discography of in answer to your question...so I began this a week or two
ago, have been away, and now return to finish it, as follows:

        Ruins 7" (Trans) 1986
        Ruins II 12" (Trans) 1987
        First Gig cassette (Magibutsu) 1987 - never have I seen any of these
        Japan Tour 1988 videotape (Magibutsu) 1988 - the digital special
video effects get annoying (I want to see what the heck they're doing, for
crisssake) but worth it for rare performances of early songs with the first
bassist, Kawamoto.  Two shows, and footage of stone shrines.
        Ruins III lp (Trans) 1988 - or this.
        *Stonehenge lp & cd (Shimmy Disc) 1990 - the original cd version of
this includes a ton of bonus tracks, but when it was recently rereleased on
Shimmy, they simply put the lp onto a disc, elimnating the extra tracks and
using crummier graphics (well, a hideously colored cover - the little
picture of the Ruins on the back is cool).  I'd avoid this version - get
the original issue used if you can, or pick up the even more recent
Magaibutsu reissue.
        Early Works: Live & Unreleased Tracks cd (Bloody Butterfly) 1991 -
would seem to include the First Gig cassette.  John Zorn plays sax on three
songs. The first two Ruins bassists (Hideki Kawamoto and Kazuyoshi Kimoto)
both appear on this compilation.
        *Burning Stone cd (Shimmy Disc) 1992 - Masuda's debut, and probably
my favorite Ruins album to date.  Includes their hit "Grubandgo".
        Ruins 7" (Public Bath) 1992 - Essential Logic, Acid Blue and
another...David Hopkins liner notes are great, with info about things like
how Masuda was in a big reggae band prior to Ruins (which explains the
Greatful Dead shirt he wore at the Chameleon, as documented in the Live In
West Coast video below - and in fact he is a Deadhead of sorts).
        *0'33" 7" (H.G. Fact) 1993 - An incredible ten-song live record,
which comes with the musical notation for all the songs (not just the
lyrics as on Burning Stone).  I think this is the only place you're going
to hear "Orta Makhur" - am I right?
        Live In West Coast videotape (Magaibutsu) 1993 - Live in
California.  Includes some performances by the Tairikuotoko Special Unit
(Sato Hal on guitar, Yoshida on bass and Masuda on drums!  Masuda is/was
not in the regular version of Tairiku Otoko vs. Sanmyaku Onna tho.)
        Ruins II & 19 Numbers cd (SSE) 1993 - Reissue of the Trans 12" plus
rehersal stuff, I think this includes the first selftitled Ruins ep on
Trans as well.
        Infect cd (SSE) 1993 - I think this was once Ruins III.  Most of
these tracks were bonus tracks on the first issue of the Stonehenge disc.
Each song appears on this disc in two different mixes, the first being a
lot fuzzier and distorted than the other.  The four songs you won't find as
bonus tracks on the first Shimmy Stonehenge cd are: "Government",
"Hallelujah", "Grudge", and "Komorebi".
        Graviyaunosch cd (NG) 1993 Great title track, live material ("Acid
Blue", from the PB 7", "Big Head" and a wonderful extended psychededlic
"B.U.G."), and studio versions (poorly recorded by Steve Albini) of some
songs otherwise only available on the 0'33" 7".
        Ruins/Dawson split 7" (H.G. Fact) 1993 - The Ruins side is the
title song from Graviyaunosch.
        Ruins cassette (FMN) 19?? - never seen this one, I'd imagine it's live.
        Ruins + Kazutoki Umezu cassette (FMN) 1994 - this is fantastic, a
Ruins show with saxophonist Umezu improvising along.
        Tien 'A' Ment Live Series 01 cassette (?) 1991? - another one that
I know nothing about, except that it's live on December 23rd, 1990.
        Best of Ruins cassette (Bio-tape Org.) 199? - this one's a
compilation tape, on an Italian tape label.  The only very "rare" song on
it is "Hallelujah", I think.
        Ruins/Schlong split 7" (H.G. Fact) 1994? - Don't have this one,
I've only heard it once, I think there's like three new Ruins tracks on
here unavailable elsewhere (further info, and a dub, appreciated...).
        *Hyderomastgroningem cd (Tzadik) 1995 - their most recent full
album, very "live" sounding, as part of Zorn's label's "New Japan" series.
It includes a new version of the John Cage scribble-scored tribute 0'33"
song.  Hyderomastgroningem also has the distinction of being the first
Ruins album with songs not entirely composed by Yoshida, as Masuda wrote
"Ordinary People In Idaho" I believe, and some other pieces were
collaborations.  Oh, actually, Early Works has a song from Yoshida's days
in YBO2, "Dry Lungs", that was written by him, KK Null and
Kitamura...anyway, whatever.  A fine disc.
        Stonehenge cd (Magaibutsu) 1995?
        Burning Stone cd (Magaibutsu) 1995? - both of these were recently
reissued on Yoshida's label with the graphics the way he wanted them.  I
haven't heard either, so I don't know if the sound is any different.  Each
has bonus tracks taken from either the Public Bath or H.G. Fact 7" records,
but again, I don't know which songs appear - so anyone who's got these,
please let me know.

Selected, significant Ruins-related releases:

        Dead Tech 3 cd (Charnel House) 1992 - compilation of Japanese
bands, put together by KK Null.  Ruins do "Dharskrive."
        Ruins-Hatoba cd (Charnel Music) 1994 - Omoide Hatoba/Ruins
collaboration, including some "adaptations" of ordinary Ruins tunes.
There's also apparently a limited edition specially-packaged version of
this cd released on Yoshida's Magaibutsu label, and also a videotape
released of the live stuff.
        *The Hundred Sights of Koenji cd (God Mountain) 1994 - Yoshida on
drums, Masuda on guitar, plus a bassist and vocalist/keyboard player Aki
(of Bondage Fruit).  This album I highly recommend, it's kind of a Magma
tribute (moreso than regular Ruins) but extremely energetic and powerful,
with great operatic vocals.  There should be a second album coming out
eventually, also on God Mountain, with a new guitarist.
        Derek & the Ruins "Saisoro" cd (Tzadik) 1995 - fairly free-form
collaboration with British improv guitarist Derek Bailey, which has been
discussed on this list a bit recently.
        The Miracle of Levitation cd (Gentle Giant) 1995 - a compilation of
US and Japanese weirdness, including besides Ruins: Ground Zero, US Maple,
James Plotkin, Altered States, etc...  Ruins do "Still Life", which I
recall them playing very entertainingly live - Yoshida mimes playing the
drums as Masuda makes percussive noises with his bass, then they go into a
catchy riff thing.  They said the title is some joke on a Van der Graff
Generator song??

There's some collaborative cd released betwixt Ruins and Jason Willet of
Megaphone, correct?  And I thought they recorded something with the Sun
City Girls, but nothing's been released, right?  furthermore, there's I'm
sure many other compiliation releases I missed - I think a 1986 NG release,
etc.

(some) Yoshida solo & other projects:

        Solo Works cassette (Magaibutsu) 1988
        Solo Works II cassette (Magaibutsu) 1989
        *Magaibutsu cd (Review/Recommended No Man's Land) 1992 - this is an
incredible studio disc.
        Live Performance videotape (Magaibutsu) 1993 - live solo in Japan.
Again, insane is the word to describe this.  It comes with a little diagram
of his set-up: drums, keys, bass pedals, headphone vocal mic and effects,
guitar or bass on lap...
        Come Again II cd (Furnace) 1993 - noise compilation, Yoshida's
track is "Abdrushin".
        Devil From the East cd (Bloody Butterfly) 1994 - collection of
tracks from bands Yoshida has played in, inluding solo and Ruins cuts.
Most of the material is live, and the number and variety of bands is
astounding.  There's a track from the first Zeni Geva cd release, Maximum
Money Monster - Yoshida plays drums and sings on about half of that disc.
        Tatsuya Yoshida & Ron Anderson "First Meeting" cd (Commercial
Failure) 1995 - Yoshida jamming with Ron from the Molecules, not essential.
        *Tairikuotoko vs. Sanmyakuonna "Perfect Hell" cd (SSE) 1994 -
meaning Continental Men Vs. The Mountain Women. This large ensemble
features Yoshida on bass, playing mostly his compositions.  Other members
include Tsuyama Atsushin, bassist of Omoide Hatoba, and Katsui Yuji (now of
Black Stage and Bondage Fruit).  Keiji Haino, Masahi Kitamura (YBO2) and
Tetsuo Furdate are among the guests.  A beautiful, insane album.
        Akaten "Red Heaven" cd ep (Magaibutsu) 1994/95? - Yoshida and
Tsuyama of Omoide Hatoba, more or less improvising in a studio.  Akaten is
a resturant in Koenji, it means Red Heaven.
        Drums, Guitar, Keyboards and Voice cd (Magaibutsu) 1995 - solo live
album, some stuff from the "Magaibutsu" cd and a lot of improvised material
too.
        Musica Transonic I cd (PSF) 1995 - actually both this and the one
below have greek titles, so I'll just call them I and II...this band is a
supergroup composed of Yoshida (drums), Nanjo of High Rise (bass) and
Kawamoto of Toho Sara (guitar) playing "contemporary heavy improvised
psychedelic music."
        Musica Transonic II cd (PSF) 1996 - if anything, better than the first.

OK, I'm going to stop there, but there's lots more I'm sure.  Hope this
helps.  My sources for this are 1) a discography printed in the August 1994
issue of Marquee magazine and 2) my own collection and recollection. (I'd
be interested in hearing from anyone with any corrections - I know I made
some mistakes - or additions!)

I've asterix'd the titles that I, IMO, deem essential Ruins(+) fare (i.e
get these first, get these Now).  For the uninitiated I'd recommend
"Burning Stone" to begin with.  (Heather, you wrote in your posting that
you have an album called "Ruins" - by that I think you mean "Stonehenge"??)

Any fellow Ruins freaks who want to further discuss the merits of any of
this please email me...(also, if you've got any live boots, radio shows,
etc.)  I'd actually like to assemble a truly complete discography,
including track listings (maybe for posting on my upcoming Hoe 'zine web

to lately? There was talk a while ago of a CD
release of the Giant Robot group cassette(not to
be confused with the Giant Robot album on Sony).
He was also supposed to be working on a Disney
album for Avant and possibly another Praxis album
on Submeta. Anyone know the status of these projects?

Sola & Wu Man: _China Collage_.  It's beautiful.  Supposedly, it is radical
interpretations of traditional Chinese music, but not being familiar in any
way with the structure of traditional Chinese music, I can't tell you what
has been changed/altered/modified.  Released at the same time as the Arcana
CD.

As far as I know, the Giant Robot tape has not been released.  He told me
when I saw him a few months ago that he was almost done with the Disney
album, but that seems to have gone into the ether.  SubMeta is gone, for
now at least, so the Praxis album is being left in its unfinished state.
Unfortunately, Caroline did their best to not sell his solo album (_Day of
the Robot_).

Buckethead has been playing live a lot over the last few months, with
Praxis and with the Invisible Scratch Pickles, and as Giant Robot with
Brain.  He is on the Arcana 2 CD which should come out this fall on Axiom
and also has Tony WIlliams, Bayard Lancaster, Wayne Shorter, Pharoah
Sanders, Ornette Coleman (on sax and violin), Granham Haynes and Bill
Laswell.

clarinet was among his arsenal of instruments on most of his recordings up through
the early 80s. Also, there's an (uncharacteristically straight) clarinet solo on
Spillane

Nope, Howard Shore wrote it (Shore made the soundtracks for (almost) all of
Cronebergs films since "The Brood" ('79))
BUT, I just found out that Cronenberg directed five of the Nike Air 180
commercials in 1990. I can understand that "Filmworks 3" has Zorn's music for
commercials, maybe the liner notes (if there are any) explaines if that's
the connection between Zorn and Cronenberg. The only thing that disapointed me
about "Filmworks 2", was that Zorn hadn't written any liner notes. The ones
in the first "Filmworks" are pretty interesting.

live (nor as good a all the other cds i'm yet to buy), but i owuld love
the elucidation contained in whichever one has those notes.

I've seen dave douglas play with feldman and freidlander in his string group
(not the tiny bell trio), and I was really impressed.  Looking to know more
about the douglas string group and involvement with zorn/masada - has

 Page Hamilton is the guy behind Helmet.  I've also heard he plays on some
new Praxis album that is in production....
  The series is pretty good.  Each artist contributes their own tracks,
though, rather than a collaberation, which would have more interesting
I have two releases in the series, 1 being Bill Laswell and Nick Bullen (ex
of Scorn) .  The Laswell segment is exceptional, and anyone who is a fan of
his dub/trance should go out of their way to find it.  The Nick Bullen
piece is a little too 'street beat' for my tastes.  The other album I have
is Justin Broaderick (Godflesh, God, and Techno Animal)/Andy Hawkins (Blind
Idiot God (( whatever happened to them???)))  This is a great album as
well, pretty trippy....
  Anyone heard the disk with Ribot?

Hamilton started to play (some even say learnt to) in Band Of Susans. Like
many NY musicians, he was involved in some of Glenn Branca's projects.
Lately he has been leading the rock band Helmet.

Caspar is of course the son of who you know. He is a guitar player with
a strong bend on the experimental side. I am not too crazy about Massaker
(his band), but I really enjoyed his duo with F.M. Einheit (from E.N.'s fame).

The version on hat art that i've got has some liner notes and a little
diagram showing what all the different hand sings mean, but it's fairly
inscrutible as far as figuring out how everything is employed.  Some of
the names of various manoevres aren't self-explanitory at all.  If you

Caspar also did an awesome duet album with his dad, available on
Pathological.  The CD might be called The Vodka King, I don't have it in

Are people really having trouble finding "Five" by the Dave Douglas String
Band? I ordered it through CDNow in April - it took them 3-4 weeks, but I
had it by early May. It should be fairly accessible by now. For those who
dug "Parallel Worlds", it's probably an even better disc - the band has
had time to mature, and Douglas's writing continues to improve. He is a
long way from being "only" the trumpeter from Masada.

The CD is called "Last Home" (Pathological 4CD) and it is currently out of
print ... The cover has a shot of father & son in front of The Vodka King,
a liquor joint in NYC.

I found the Golden Boat through university co-op. I'm in Virginia and
most of the state schools do a co-op through university libraries.  I found
this film at University of Virginia.  If you can, try going through a
University library co-op because they are the only ones who purchase
independant and experimental films because they have the budget (these
films tend to be too costly for any store or whatever to purchase,
esp. without much of an audience).  I've yet to recieve it so I can't
give a review but I believe, if memory serves me correct, Jim Jarmusch
is also in it (or some New York scenester of that type).  And actually
I think there were one or two more zorn-scorred films at UVa but I'm
not sure.

It is kind of funny to read reviews about the KF Cobra record. You wonder
sometimes if the reviewers are from the same world, or are really listening
to the same record (or even opened it...). I am not talking about reviewers
without interest for music on the edge, but on the contrary people who are
always ready to take a chance with the most extreme music. Concerning COBRA
on the KF label, reviews range from very bad to very good. Some think it is
better than the Hat Hut one; some think that it is really bad, specially
after the Hat Hut.

Everybody knows that music criticism is not an exact science, but when even
respected (and supposedly) knowledgeable critics disagree to such extent,
you start to wonder...

Anyway, I personally have a hard time with the KF record and I am wondering
if the fact that it took more than two years to be released is not related
to Zorn's doubts about its value. I prefer the Hat Hut, but still think
that game pieces should be released on video (too dry on record).

I was just listening to it today. It's a collection of 1 minute pieces by
a mess of different people. One set is from 1996, one from 1992, and one
from 86. There was (in 92?) a single CD version. I think the 2 CD version
has everything from the old one. There's a bunch poets on it as well as
new music. It's fun-it reminds me of a real cool out-there college radio
show, where the DJ is doing a long set fading stuff in and out, playing
bits of spoken word in between tunes...

I think that is a good idea.  I was thinking about that when I saw Cobra on
8/2 at the Knit.  It sounded incredible, but honestly sometimes it's
impossible to tell who is playing what.  I noticed this because I had an
obstructed view, and couldnt see all the musicians.  The sound is all a big
picture, but if I know Zeena Parkins is playing something, I'd like to *see*
her play it, because I may not be able to distinguish it in the mix.  And
thats another thing, it is really hard to get a good balance between the
instruments in a live setting like that, sometimes it requires a good sound
engineer.  12 musicians at once, that's a lot of sound.
And also just to be able to see everyone watching Zorn for the next cue...
and when he points at every musician consecutively and they play one fast
note.. these things would be very interesting to watch on video.

I'm not sure where the archives for the Zorn list are, but there will be
some notes on this one among them.

In short, Subsonic 1 is much more "difficult listening" than #2 or #3.  No
beats or ambient elements in either the Ribot or Frith material.  For me it
numbers among many discs that sound great if I'm just listening to the
music and doing nothing else, but not very pleasant as a soundtrack to your
life's activities.  There's the warning.

The Ribot tracks take off where the most noisy material on Shrek stops.

I haven't heard much by Frith, so I have to compare this to the old "live
in Japan" box set from the early 80's.  It's in the same vein of noise
making.  One of the tracks features these techniques on solo acoustic.

Tzadik cd's, I would NEVER do any kind of trade for cash. (--insert

I would tend to agree that the KF release is a little harder to handle,
and the majority of that is because of sound quality (from my
perspective).  There are some amazing moments on the KF CD, but the
general sheen of "bootleg"-esque sound that exists is really hard to get
behind.  The idea of releasing the stuff on video is exactly right, but
Zorn's reticence to let his image into the world (as if he felt his sould
was being captured) seems to make this unlikely.

I really enjoyed the recent Knit show and felt that live (and with a
primary "electric" line-up) the piece works much better than on CD.  The
idea of a video release is great and would start to achieve that sort of
audience experience, but that the recorded output just doesn't work (not
even the hat hut release).

Nice thing about the Knit show was seeing the Cobra vets (A. Coleman,
David Shea, Chris Cochrane, Zeena) operating in a group with some talented
newbies (Spooky, Wm. Parker, Susie Ibara) and following those dynamics.
Nice to see Zorn conducting too.  Got a real sense of how the conductor's
role was concieved.

Yes, Zeena's sister.  Yes, amazing to hear some out improv techniques on
accordion.  Playing with Briggan Krauss (Pigpen, Myth Science) and Kenny
Wolleson (New Klezmer Trio, Junk Genius).  Sort of tending towards the
Ornette end of things, but they go even farther out at a couple moments.
She's still developing and will go a long way I'm sure.  Supposedly great
live, but I missed her What Is Jazz? set.

Andrea Parkins plays keyboards and sundry digital electronics as well as
accordion, simultaneously. She leads a band that I haven't heard and don't
recall who's in. She plays with Ellery Eskelin's band which is Ellery
(tenor sax), Andrea and Jim Black (drums). I heard them live at In-House,
David Lopato's place on Greenwich St. in NYC, and they were wonderful. And
I have a Songlines CD they did called "jazz trash," which I like a lot.

Uh, the term "bootleg" has nothing to do with whether money changes hands.
It has to do with the legitimacy of the the product under consideration,
being derived from a method of smuggling, ie, bringing something where it
is not allowed.

Think, for example, of bootleg liquor smuggled into the States during
Prohibition. At this time it was not merely illegal to sell liquor, it was
illegal to possess it, even for personal use.

The erroneous use of the term "bootleg" is quite common in situation such
as the one below, in which someone wants to obscure the fact that the major
moral problem with bootleg recordings is NOT economic, but respect for
artistic control of how one's work is presented.

I KNOW that I'm not going to change any minds with this.  Still, all the
usual talk about "I have ALL of the commercial recordings already" & "well,
I just traded for it, I didn't pay for it, so it's okay" is a lot of
quibbling designed to obscure some very real moral issues surrounding
bootlegs.

Peter Brotzmann, one of the fathers of the European free improvisation
scene. One of the founders of the music coop. Free Music Production
(FMP). Initially influenced by people such as Ayler, Coltrane, but soon found
his own way. MACHINE GUN (recorded in May 1968) is *THE* masterpiece of
European improv. Before, people could think that European were following
the US; with MACHINE GUN (and later with Music Improvisation Company),
you have one of the first testimonies of European free players creating a
new style. Even in 1996 this record is still amazing and a must!!!

Brotzmann, besides tenor, plays exotic intruments such as Taragot (a kind of
wooden soprano, from Eastern Europe) and bass saxophone.

He has his name on easily 150 records; has recorded quite a bit solo; known
as a key player of the Globe Unity Orchestra (big band dedicated to free
improv.); famous for his trio with Fred Van Hove (piano/organ) and Han
Bennink (drums), etc.

She is a cousin of Zeena. I saw her at The Cooler and liked her a lot.

I agree with Denman Maroney's comments on Andrea Parkins. "Jazz Trash" is
a disc that I think many on this list would (or already do) enjoy. Ellery
is a great improviser (check his Soul Note date, "Figure of Speech", too
- as well as Mark Helias' "Loopin the Cool"), and the chance to hear both
Parkins and Eskelin with the great Jim Black is not to be missed.
As for my two cents on Bobby Previte, I think he's incredible. I know that
many others on this list (I can at least recall Patrice's favorable
reviews) agree, and I think virtually all of his own records are well
worth checking out - he assembles great bands, he's a really good drummer,
and his writing is at times simply marvellous. If anyone's looking for
first purchases, I would look into the Avant disc ("Slay the Suitors" by
Empty Suits) and "Hue and Cry" by his other band Weather Clear Track Fast.

Previte might be the most "jazz" musician of the NY downtown scene. Although
he has been involved in many improv situations (I even doubt there could exist
one in which he was not involved :-), when he is in total control (bands
under his leadership), his music has very little to do with the sound
associated to the NY downtown scene. Jazz is one of his main influences, but
also contemporary music (he has, I think, a special passion for great
orchestrators).

The craftmanship of Bobby amazes me. I think he is one of the most gifted
composers we can find in jazz, these days. His compositions are so upbeat and
so well crafted, that you really feel that every note is justified and has
been deeply thought about. My top favorite records by him are:

032 - CLAUDE'S LATE MORNING: Bobby Previte (1988 - Gramavision, 18-8811-2)
040 - EMPTY SUITS: Bobby Previte (1990 - Gramavision (USA), R2 79447)
053 - WEATHER CLEAR, TRACK FAST: B. Previte (1991 - Enja Records, R2 79667)

It would be hard for me to choose between any of these three because I
think they are all fantastic.

One great thing also with his compositions, is that they pull the best
out of the musicians he selects. It is my feeling that playing in one of
his bands is a great moment. Surprisingly, for a drummer composer,
there is no room for him to demonstrate as a player. He writes for the
other players, not for him. His job, in his bands, is to support the
others and he does that in such an efficient and unobstrusive way.

As if it was not enough, Bobby is a fantastic drummer and it is always a
pleasure to watch him playing (he seems to have so much fun).

I could also add that when some of his compositions appear on records by
other people (such as Guy Klucevsek, Carol Emanuel, NY Composers Orchestra,
etc), they are often the ones I prefer.

A total artist!

Patrice has a discography on the NWU homepage.  I didnt realize he was
a visual artist also.  I'd like to know more about this aspect.  If
anyone's from virginia, he will be here next year as apart of the
Virginia Museum's Fast/Forward series, which is a series of avant-garde
artist/performers/musicians, with d.j. spooky.  Henry Threadgill will also be
in the series. Can anyone give me some reviews/info on him too?

Plenty of performances get taped for lots of reasons:  work in progress,
new gear, favors for friends, potential release in some format.  This
doesn't mean that it's always right for copies of these tapes to get
around.  Just 'cause something is taped with the knowledge of an artist
doesn't mean they want the tape to be heard by anyone other than the band
or whoever else they made it for.

I was involved in producing a radio series that was on public radio about
five years ago, which included a live performance by the old Frisell trio.
Despite sound checks & preliminary recordings that seemed okay, the final
tape didn't sound right to the band.  The playing was fine, the recording
was clean, but Driscoll's bass sound wasn't quite right.  Another
performance (the live show from Spain that was commerically released last
year) was substituted.  At that performance there were "mics in the air"
but a copy of the tape in circulation would be an unauthorized tape, a
bootleg.

Arguments in favor of bootlegs solely from an economic standpoint like
"I've bought all the commercially available stuff already," only deal with
a part of the story of unauthorized circulation of an artist's work.  & the
other quibbling that goes into all of this: "it's only a bootleg if money
changes hands", "the artist knew that this tape was made, so it's okay",
etc. only obscure the issues more.

I know that lots of folks on this list & elsewhere trade tapes of shows.  &
I know that it's unlikely that I'm going to change any minds about the
issues involved.  I'm not a cop, I'm not your dad, do what you want.

This'd probably be impossible for improvisors, but a few people who "only"
compose come pretty close.

One example that comes to mind is Conlon Nancarrow, an American expatriate
composer living in Mexico City, who primarily writes for player pianos.
All but his last 3 or 4 pieces (a little more than half an hour) are
available on CD.

Bobby's Weather Clear, Track Fast band: Lindsey Horner, bass; Andy Laster,
saxes, flute, clarinet; Andrew d'Angelo, saxes, bass clarinet; Cuong Vu,

since it's been working the Knitting Factory's "Late Night Player's Hang,"

By the way, the name "The Horse" is an abbreviation of the band's full name,
which is itself a reaction to the conservatism rampant in the programming of
New York's jazz clubs.  The notion of a sprawling large ensemble playing
plugged-in music from the late '60s-early '70s (Miles's Bitches Brew, Herbie
Hancock's Mwandishi, etc.) being unappealing to those conservative clubs,
Bobby put his ensemble into the Knit and named it "...and the Horse You Rode
In On."  You can figure out what's missing from the name.

Yup, there's a booklet in the set with personnel from all fifty conductions
and liner notes. It's a pretty consistent box, but the sound quality is
pretty poor throughout which takes away from the set's appeal in my mind.
Still recommended, though, and i would be hard pressed having only heard the
box maybe twice all the way through to pick the best discs although I did
like both the Turkish and the Japanese ensembles.

Speaking of Bobby Previte, just thought I'd mention that he was in town
(Boston @ Sculler's Jazz Club) with Jane Ira Bloom, Mark Dresser, and Julien
Priester last week.  INCREDIBLE!  Period!  He's one of the greatest drummers
I've ever seen live.  And of course the others are certainly no "Slouches"
either.  Interesting enough, He claimed when I was talking to him that his
music is really more "rock" than "Jazz."
Not sure if he meant his recent endeavors more than past projects or what.  I
don't own any of his solo stuff...YET.  His collaborations with E#/Carbon are
certainly more "rock" in my opinion, but I generally don't have big hang-ups
with needing to label and catagorize.  I gave that up around the time Sonic
(Cicconey) Youth covered Madonna.

Any opinions on the "Rock" or "Jazz" question?  Most importantly, which solo
disc do I start with?

Hey now, it's not very nice to call someone helping you out a dope, now is
it? :)  Anyways, yes, I found said CD at my local Borders as well.  Also
picked up the new Anthony Coleman CD _Selfhaters_.

Too early for me to offer up a review of either one yet, seeing as how
it has been a pretty healthy week for improv stuff (Ornette released two
albums as well), but what I've listened to on the Masada CD has been great

Is this different from the Bible Launcher disc that showed up
yesterday at Borders here? (I was tempted to get it, but narrowed
down to the Masada double-disc (was that supposed to be at the
single-disc price at which I got it?) and the Shelley Hirsch "O
Little Town of East New York", both of which were there for the first
time, as was Ikue Mori's new one.)

This is one of Zorn's hardest to find records! Because of CBS/Sony pathetic
job (they released a record that they did not even try to distribute outside
Japan), Zorn tried to get the rights back to him. He wrote them but never
got an answer (he event tried to pay to get the rights back to him!). Net
result: unlikely to see it in the near future :-(.

Both are terrific, but only the first volume actually has Zorn playing on
it, so that gives it the edge for me.  Plus you'll be able to decide from
that one whether you want to acquire more.

although there are remixes, Bailey is Bailey
Techno always seems so flat, contrived, un-human
Derek's guitar work over programmed drums is quite intelligent

Purists will scoff, but i really liked Arcana with Laswell and Williams
and with the DJ, new listeners will get hooked by the beats
and eventually LISTEN to the guitar

I'd buy the first one first, since it's longer, has zorn playing on it,
has more variety, and is more in line with zorn's jump-cut insanity.  The
second one is atmospheric, but more homogeneous all the way through and
so, to me, not as crazy and fun as the first one.

The third one, of which i've only heard tell in song and ledgend, has
Masada on the first twelve tracks, i think.  That sounds very cool.

and is about 70 minutes long and was recorded in 93 or around then.

Are these representative of his better stuff?  Being a huge joey barron
fan, would i like the live thing better than the other album?

i went. i found it to be very up and down. some parts were fantastic, with
patton making stockhausen-esque electronic gurgles and rmbles, etc as
well as some interesting vocal stuff, kind of eye meets minton. other parts
seemed very mundane, with patton playing prerecorded music as a
backdrop for soloing. zorn was in his typical free improv mode, and was
pretty consistently on, if not inspired.

this was childs-play compared to what happened the following night at
Venue Nine, before zorn's cobra show. there was a mostly unannounced
reunion of the group Twins (zorn/ackley/chadbourne/kaiser) who last
played together about 20 years ago. this was the best thing i've seen zorn
do, in years. totally amazing improvisation covering the full dynamic
spectrum from whispering acoustic guitar sounds to full on wailing saxes.
it was a magic moment, seeing zorn & chadbourne reunited, not to mention
zorn and kaiser on the same stage (there's no shortage of hostility between
them!) it's too bad no one recorded this show. perhaps they'll be inspired
to make a recording in the near future.

compilation of a number of soundtracks,
which accounts for the changes and styles.

I just got Kato Hideki's newest, Hope and Despair (Extreme 036). I don't
recall if it's been discussed here.  It's a beautiful, haunting, kind of
quiet recording.  I gather that some of the recordings were done live, some
in the studio. Some of the tracks have an off-mic feel to some of the
instruments, a sound I'm not usually fond of (except for Ayler, of course),
but it seems to add to the theme of the music, especially the despair part.
There are some excellent performance by the contributors including Zeena
Parkins, Dougie Bowne, Zorn (on piano only!!!) and a lot of japanese names
I'm not familiar with.

I highly recommend the "Live" disc.  The trio was some of my favorite
Frisell.

I think the new Bailey record IS a really terrific JUNGLE record. I've
been listening to it a lot, and it puts me in the mood to hear more
jungle/drum n bass, rather than more Bailey/Incus/improv.

If by chance someone gets interested by hearing this album, a couple of
recent recommendations of d'n'b albums that aren't 'flat, contrived,
un-human':

 Plug "Drum N Bass for Papa" (Blue Angel UK)

 Squarepusher "Feed Me Weird Things" (Warp UK) -- if this were Jaco
Pastorius' answer to Bailey's Gtr/drum/bass album it would be the best
album Jaco ever made. If he were alive. Urmmmm..this is much better than
you're thinking...highly recommended even if you hate fusion.

On the other hand -- I definitely will not be listening to the Bailey /

As far as I know, the only live shows in the US that Laswell has done for
several years are Painkiller and Praxis shows.  And there were only two
Praxis shows, one in San Francisco last November and one in NYC in July.
Praxis has toured Europe also.  And the more interesting live concerts have
been in Asia.

There was a tour in Asia by the Flying Mijinko Band, which had a huge
number of people in it, led by Akira Sakata, that was pressed on CD in
Japan.  It's a double CD and it is incredible, but I have not heard of it
being available anywhere.  The publisher was the Japan Foundation rather
than a real label, which may explain its non-availability.

I got it on my recent trip to NYC, either at Downtown Music Gallery or
Other Music. I bought about 25 CD's at these places and Tower and HMV. I
was like a kid at Christmas!  I found Andrea Centazzo's _Environment for
Sextet_, (which I'd been looking for for a while), the two new Ornette CD's,
a fabulous new Frith recording (on RecRec with Cora, Joey Baron & George
Cartwright), the newest John Patton, Minor Swing, (with some of Zorn's best
playing ever), a great Nurse With Wound, a classic by Luc Ferrari (Presque
Rien), a new one by Carol Emanuel (just out on Koch and I believe it's her
first solo recording. It features Bobby Previte, Marty Erlich, Marc Ribot,
Hark Roberts and Guy Klucevsek and a version of Zorn's Tasmanian Devil).  A
bunch of other cool stuff, too.  I've got enough to keep me happy for at
least a week or two. :-)

  It's hard to explain.  The names on the disk are  Haruomi Hosono, G.
Hotoda, B. Laswell, and Y.Terada
Other than that, nothing much is decipherable except that it was released
in 96 by Studio Garage, Inc.
It seems pretty good, though.  "Percussive Ambient" would be a good
discription, I think.

My friend got someone to read the Japanese inside the Masada CD's and it
turns out that to get Daled you have to send the three proofs of purchse
(those gold paper things that cover the spine in japanese) of Masada 1 2
3 to the office in Japan.  It's some kind of EP with just four songs on
it. I don't have it so I don't know for sure.  At least that's how you get it
in Canada, I don't know about the US or UK.  Maybe in the US they don't get
the Japanese versions so they know what to do. Your best bet is getting
someone who reads Japanese to tell you the spiel.

Don't even bother - it's sold out (or more correctly, out-of-stock and
unavailable from Japan at any price). You were able to send in the proofs
of purchase (or copies of the covers) along with some IRCs, but the offer
expired months ago.  It was very limited (but I don't know the final #).

officialy a Hosono release. If you didn't know... you can peel off the

A few weeks ago, at someone's request, I posted the approximate lineup of
Bobby Previte's new band The Horse.  Now, from Bobby's latest flyer, here
is the updated, accurate version:

Mark Feldman, Lindsey Horner, Herb Robertson, Jamie Saft, Jon Dryden,
Adam Kolker, Peter Epstein, Stephan Crump, Pete McCann, John Mettam,
Peter Basil, Bobby Previte.  A lot of these players I don't know myself,
so I can't say what everyone does.  But here's the band's "mission
statement," courtesy of Bobby:

"The Horse is a new band that for now is concentrated on the music of the
early 70's - a forgotten era, a grand exhalation, with the biggest breath
pushed out by Miles Davis and band in the 'Bitches Brew' period.  Not a
'tribute' band nor a recreation, The Horse uses the spirit of that time
as a clarion call to come out of the gate with all ears pinned back."

Absolutely free, every Tuesday night in the Tap Bar of the Knitting
Factory.  I think they start at 11:30.

The front (where you can vaguely read the CD name) is covered by a grey
film. You can peel it from the corner. Underneath is track listings, who
plays, produces, etc...

I managed to track this CD down. does anyone know:

1) Date of show
2)Venue
3)Is it really Kenny Wollesen on drums? It does sound like joey. I think
I even hear zorn say, "Joey!" during the drum solo in track 7(Ravayah),
which he does when joey plays to get him to go faster and harder. I can't
tell. Joey has a very distinct harsh ride cymbal which I think i hear on
this CD. But on the other hand, Joey doesn't put anything in his bass
drum, and has a "hollow" sound. THe bass drum on this cd sounds
"deadened".

Any comments? Patrice? Anyone?-

There is something strange about this record. Stefan Negele has a video
of this concert (he played the record and the video at the same time and
they match perfectly!). The funny thing is that the video is about a
concert recorded at the Fabrik in Hamburg on November 12, 1994 (and not
NY as mentioned on the sleeve). Because the record is more or less a
bootleg...

No info concerning the drummer.

It is in fact a show from Hamburg, 11/12/94 like Patrice stated.  I have an
FM of this show, and I compared them and it is the same.  And it is
definitely Kenny Wollensen.
This particular lineup did play at the Knitting Factory in NY, in January of
'94 I believe.  I think this boot cd company just uses incorrect venues to
try and conceal the source of the show.  I heard Zorn say once (jokingly),
"That boot sounds pretty good, I oughta put that out myself.."

I picked up a tzadik catalog (put out by the Australian distributor)
yesterday which lists a number of upcoming release in the tzadik archival
series.
These included Painkiller's Guts of a Virgin, Buried Secrets and Execution
Ground (3CD). Also listed is The Parachute Years (3CD) which I assume would
include Archery which was released on Parachute.

Does anyone have any information as to when these releases are due out or
the track listing of the Parachute Years set?

DEREK BAILEY/JOHN ZORN/WILLIAM PARKER//Harras
Sure, you know that free improvisation is generally more fun
to read about than to hear.  It too often results in a
cacophonous austerity that tries to banish much of what
makes music so vital.  Not Harras, which is vital,
smart and altogether seductive.  That's not just the result
of these musicians' remarkable talents and vast experience;
God knows, they've each had less than fascinating moments.
But the three lengthy tracks here (recorded live at the
Knitting Factory) don't avoid the music's sensual nature.
Saxist Zorn will blow an extended bluesy melody while Bailey
throws brittle fragments of guitar underneath.  Parker may
respond with a flurry of bass runs.  A couple of minutes
later, the mood will have shifted.  Zorn now worries over a
series of staccato notes that Parker is prodding with his
bass.  Bailey's slurred electric guitar phrases keep the
peace.  On paper, this sounds arbitrary.  On record, it's
lively with an understandable flow that makes Harras
an ideal album for both neophytes and fans.  Be sure to
listen for the "hidden" track:  the last piece abruptly
stops like the recorder had been shut off.  There's five
minutes of silence and then an introspective Bailey solo.

Got _Harras_ a little while ago, and hadn't listened to all of it till
this morning.  Great stuff, especially once the group digs in on the 2nd
and 3rd tracks.  HOWEVER..... as I'm sitting here enjoying it, and Zorn's
squalling blissfully, the CD cuts off into silence.  This is at about the
23-minute mark in the 3rd track.  I'm completely mystified.  Furthermore,
after five minutes' more silence, then finally Bailey enters, playing very
quietly.

So what gives?  Is this a flaw in the CD or something deliberate?
(There's a 1-1/2 minute dead silence on _Saisoro_ which _is_ definitely
deliberate: but here the silence comes in the middle of a climax--the
musicians haven't stopped playing.)  Is this on all the copies of
_Harras_ or just mine?

Steve Smith from Koch (Tzadik distributor) posted a week ago about the record
being postponed. Surprisingly, few people mentioned that they found a copy of
it at various Borders locations. I found my copy yesterday at Tower Records
(Portland, OR). With only Borders having it, it could have been a mistake
(sending the records to them and changing (Tzadik) their minds at the very
last minute), but with Tower Records having it also, I feel that the idea
of postponing the record got... postponed :-). Any precision Steve?

I'd forgotten to respond about this before.

I'm not sure who had said that Zorn would be at B'shoot but he is NOT. The
woman who books music for the festival had vaguely looked into Zorn's
availability early on, but nothing ever came of it.

The most Zorn-related music at Bumbershoot may be the Skerik's Smokestack
Lightnin' Improv a ganza, that Wayne Horvitz is playing in, but don't
forget that Lesli Dalaba plays in Jeff Greinke's group Land. Or maybe the
Bush Tetras, but they're probably playing in Portland too.

On the other hand, it doesn't look like Masada is playing in Portland, so
you may want to make plans to come up to Seattle November 16th.

(That goes for you too, of course, Patrice.)
