  5. This may help things out a bit:

  7. I saw Zorn with Masada in a small cafe here in San Francisco around the
  8. time that the first Masada CD had been released.  The last night of his
  9. stay at the cafe, someone was sitting up front sneakily trying to make a
  10. DAT of the show.  Zorn somehow (almost telepathically) knew what was going
  11. on and demanded that the DAT be confiscated until the end of the show.  He
  12. was VERY adamant about this.  HOWEVER, right next to the DAT-man was
  13. someone else who was taping the show with a regular, walkman tape
  14. recorder--he, in front of everyone, asked Zorn if it was ok and Zorn said,
  15. "Yeah that's fine, no problem.  But no DATs."
  16. I was there (as I'm sure were some of you others who can testify as well)
  17. so this is the truth.  I know that doesn't clear up anything regarding
  18. specifically video, but I was given the very distinct impression that Zorn
  19. did not mind his shows being recorded so long as the recordings were not
  20. being made for "professional reasons."

  56. Just because someone makes a recording on a DAT, does not mean
  57. it is for "professional reasons".  The problem with the first guy is that he
  58. didn't ask permission.  Actually that was his second mistake, the first
  59. was that he got caught.  I guess his set up wasnt stealthy enough,
  60. he probably had a microphone in his hand or something.  I can't
  61. see why John would care if somebody made a clean sounding recording
  62. on a DAT as opposed to a crappy sounding one on a regular
  63. Walkman, just as long as you don't intend to make any money off
  64. of it.

  66. The bottom line is, just ask his permission before you tape
  67. him, or if you cant before hand, then after the show let him know
  68. that you did tape him.  Let him know what your intentions are,
  69. and every thing will be all right, and you will be able to sleep with
  70. yourself at night and not have to worry about what other people
  71. (like ones on this list) will think of it.  Either that, or just don't get 
  72. caught!

  122. You can make a CD from anything. A good cassette recording can be easily loaded 
  123. up onto a digital work station and mastered to near CD quality. I do it often. 
  124. It's my job. Digital Noise reduction techniques can all but illiminate Cassette 
  125. noise and then a touch of EQ and maybe even a few other mastering tid-bits and 
  126. you have an excellent source to make CD's from. I should add that I use a 
  127. CD-Recorder to make dubious CD's for myself only and do not release these 
  128. recordings to bootleg companies. It's not a moral thing, I just can't be 
  129. bothered. I like to get desk tapes though. Better separation and nice things.

  168. bucks.  I got the catalog, then lost it.  If anyone remembers the

  197. I'm not sure where you come up with this logic. Newsflash: that Jazz Door
  198. cd was not made by someone sittin in the audience with a DAT
  199. recorder, it was made by somebody who worked at the club.

  254. Okay, so there's been several Bungle reviews posted, but hey! not one 
  255. from me who had the extreme pleasure of seeing them last night. From 
  256. the comfort of the sound-desk no less!  The show was a lot more album 
  257. based than i'd been led to expect, 8 tracks off DV, + Travolta ;-), 
  258. with about maybe 5 other very off the wall stuff.  Only Trevor Dunn 
  259. and Trey Spruance were masked, TD in a very scary "tragedy" one.  It 
  260. was a real music show, and you could tell they got pretty pissed 
  261. with the assholes crowdsurfing and shouting. Pattons best line "This 
  262. is something we wrote in 1984, its called the girls of porn"(launches 
  263. into "Carry Stress in the Jaw").   I could hardly beleive how good 
  264. these guys were at reproducing what was on the records, and making it 
  265. better!!  My expression varied between *big* smile and open mouthed 
  266. astonishment.
  267. I will also take time to mention the sound engineers band featuring 
  268. TD, who are releasing soon.  I can't remember the name, but it was 
  269. Czech for Carnival!  
  270. I will also say that tapes exist of the shows, but wil not be made 
  271. commercially or illegally available to buy.  Shitter.

  337. Here is what is going on with new Buckethead CDs -

  339. _Day of the Robot_ on Meta is delayed because of some problems with the
  340. artwork.  It should be out in March, since everything but the paper is
  341. done.  Bill Laswell on bass, Ninj on rhythm tracks.
  342.  
  343. Disney album on Avant did not come out in February as someone had posted it
  344. would be (and I probably repeated.)  The recording is about half done.
  345.  
  346. Duet with Brain on Avant has not been recorded yet.  It is still planned
  347. for recording and release this year.
  348.  
  349. The above information came directly from a conversation I had with
  350. Buckethead last week, so it should be correct (the Meta information I
  351. already had from other sources.)
  352.  
  353. A recording called _Giant Robot_, *not* the Laswell-produced and Sony Japan
  354. only _Giant Robot_, should be on CD in the near future.  This was produced
  355. by Pete Scapula and has Brain on drums.  Unless Buckethead is playing bass
  356. exactly like Bootsy, there are uncredited Bootsy bass tracks.  I forgot to
  357. ask Buckethead about this one.  It was recorded last year.  There is no
  358. label, it will probably be a private release.

  402. SubMeta is distributed by Caroline, so it should be in most Tower stores.
  403. I think the problem with Possession and Second Nature may be that most
  404. Tower stores have no idea where to put them becauyse they use restrictive
  405. category systems.

  407. Every Tower store buys for itself, so there can be problems with
  408. availability at some stores.  Away from urban and college markets, the
  409. selection can be much less diverse.  If it weren't for Pulse pushing some
  410. outside stuff, some of those stores would probably have the same selection
  411. as WalMart.

  413. That is the current release date, and it will probably hold for Divination,
  414. but Buckethead has the artwork for _Day of the Robot_ and release depends
  415. on turnaround on the art.

  493. both more straight ahead but still cool. Also the three "five spot" disc's
  494. with booker little from some amazing live dolphy.

  559. Particular standouts include the already cited Five Spot discs, his work
  560. with Coltrane (Africa Brass, various live gigs), and his work with Mingus.
  561. Check out Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus, Mingus @ Antibes and
  562. anything you can find from Mingus' 1964 European tour (most of the gigs
  563. exist on CD/LP, though not all them are easy to find.)

  888. Factory, and their will be a 3 day Tzadik festival, both in April. The first
  889. evening of the Tzadik festival will be Zorn solo, Elliot Sharp and I believe
  890. Shelly Hirsch. Tzadik should have at least 3 new releases in April. I've also
  891. heard rumblings of new Avant titles, but have yet to see a list. Perhaps

  1029. thought folks on this list might be interested in the following:

  1031. Two works by the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi will be performed at
  1032. New England Conservatory in Boston on the Enchanted Circle series next
  1033. Thursday.  The 35-minute Suite No. 9 "Ttai" for solo piano will open
  1034. the program.  "Anahit" for violin and chamber orchestra will be heard
  1035. after intermission, along with works by Webern and Tamar Diesendruck.
  1036. Scelsi's music is trance-like and hallucinatory, filled with
  1037. quasi-ostinati and micro-tonal explorations of the harmonic series. 
  1038. He was nearly unknown through most of his creative life.  John Cage said
  1039. of Scelsi, "He would make a whole piece that would be one sound. 
  1040. Constantly changing, but still just one sound.  I loved his music....it's

  1187. getting completely out of the European improvised influence to create a
  1188. completely new genre of music.

  1190. The record was originally issued on Frith's Rift label in 1983. To my 
  1191. knowledge, it was the first time that Zorn was using rock music elements
  1192. (thanks to Arto Linday) in his music. The pieces are very short and
  1193. features four different lineups. Even Zorn agrees that it is weird
  1194. stuff (his comment on the Japanese reissue)!

  1197. pieces Zorn ever did.
