Subject: masada 4/5/96
Date: 06 Apr 1996 01:01:43 -0500
Just got back from seeing Masada at the Knitting Factory.
They couldnt have played better; it was outstanding. But they werent
playing on the stage like most bands do- no, they were on the floor.
There were tables and chairs on the stage and on the floor. And
there was one light shining down on them, mostly on Joey. Guess
John wanted a more intimate setting.
Here's GOOD NEWS:
This Wednesday, the 10th, Bill Frisell will be doing a solo performance
between Masada sets AND he will be sitting in during Masada's second
set!! YES!!!!!YES!!!!!!!!! Does it show that I'm happy?

Just a little something for those of you up here in the northeast.
The Loud Music Festival in Northampton, Mass. is happening from April 17-20.
There will be over 200 bands playing at night and panel discussions in the
day.
Of interest here will be the Knitting Factory Stage on the 18th. Zorn will
be playing (possibly duets w/ Mike Patton), other NYC scenesters will be
brought up, and my group, Prelapse, will be playing.
My group will be performing pieces written for Naked City, including world
premiers, reworkings of older material, and possibly some original stuff too.
This is all the info I have, but y'all can call (617) 232-2489 ext.5683 or
1-800-843-8425
for directions and tix.
Hope to see you there!

there. Got to see them here in Olympia a monthe ago, and boy did they

eugene chadbourne was just here in the bay area for about a week playing a
bunch of shows. he stayed at my house for a few nights and i was working on
an article for the bay guardian so i got to interview him at length. one
thing i asked him about was his experience with zorn and how he felt about
the book of heads. i had heard rumors that the two of them had some bad
feelings and that the feeling among the musicians who knew JZ and EC at the
time was that zorn ripped chadbourne off right and left and that EC would
confirm this if i asked him about it. well i asked him and he had only
positive things to say about zorn, and literally laughed at the accusation
that zorn had ripped him off. he commented on how zorn's level of
perfectionism and his interest in super fast musical changes eventually led
them apart musically, but he displayed nothing but respect for zorn and said
that he would consider working together again if the right opportunity arose.
he also gave me a tape of a forthcoming cd (to be released on derek bailey's
label, incus) of zorn and chadbourne duos from 1980. it's really amazing
stuff, all improvised and pretty unlike the parachute records they made
together. chadbourne expressed regret that more of the improvisations they
played together had never seen the light of day.

Hi y'all
I wanted to clear up a possible misconception concerning my last post. The
"Knitting Factory stage" at the Loud Music Festival (where Zorn, Anthony
Coleman, Prelapse, others are playing on april 18) will be somewhere in
Northampton, Massachussettes. NOT in the Knitting Factory in NYC. Call the
Loud Music people for tix/directions: 1(617) 232-2489 ext.5683 or
1-800-843-8425.
Somebody asked about the "new" NC tunes. Technically, there aren't any new
tunes (except the ones I wrote! ;-) These are tunes that Zorn wrote for NC
but for whatever reason never recorded/rehearsed, or got around to them. Most
of them would feel very comfortable on the Grand Guignol or Radio albums. A
lot of the titles have the word "Blood" somewhere in them.
My group "Prelapse" should have a CD featuring this music out in a number of
months. No specifics yet, there are still a lot of details left to work
out.;-)

My posts to this bulletin board have not been reaching their final
destination, and I have no clue as to why. I'll continue to post in spite of
this, though, and hope that things work themselves out. I saw the new Staley
CD the other day, and it appears as if Zorn only performed on one of the
tracks. The listing in Cadence doesn't surprise me (in listing Zorn as a
contributor), as the same thing was done for Staley's reissue of his "Mumbo
Jumbo" recording, which again featured Zorn and listed him first among
contributors when in fact he only played on two or three tracks. I also saw
the second volume of the "Collasal Saxophone Sessions" recording, which
looked as if it had about three performances by Zorn (I think that he showed
up twice on volume one).

You are confusing me. The Evidence 2xCD is the reissue of the two Japanese
volumes on King Records/Paddle Wheel.
Are you really saying that there is a second volume with 2xCD again?

First off, John Zorn was not involved in Mr. Bungle's 2nd album, only the
first. Patton is also on Zorn's "Elegy" album, which was fairly recently
re-released on Tzadik. I haven't listened to it in a while, but from what I
remember, it's not like anything Patton's done before, a lot more mellow.
I'm also having problems with this mailing list. I know I've sent a post a

This is not a Zorn-specific posting, but it does apply
to something many people have been posting about lately.
The Derek Bailey / Pat Metheny dates and recording at
the Knitting Factory did not happen. Derek, as many of
you may have heard, collapsed of sheer exhaustion last
October, right after a concert with Tony Oxley at the
Knitting Factory. He didn't get to go to Chattanooga
for a Company week with Zorn, Frith and the Shaking Ray
Levis.
He was starting to feel better but took another turn for
the worse in winter, just as he was getting ready to
go to Germany for dates with Henry Kaiser. And he didn't
make it to the KnitFac in March, either.
The Knitting Factory has rescheduled the performances
for November (not August, as I inadvertantly e-mailed
a Zorn-list participant yesterday), at Bailey's request.
The recording will be made then, and is to be issued
on the Knitting Factory Works label. Pat (who was
spotted at a Masada gig earlier this week) is still
very eager to do the project.
Word is that Bill Frisell will be sitting in with
Masada tonight...

i caught wednesday's late set with frisell at the knitting factory. as an
aside, i'm really tired of the kf treating the fans like shit. three shows
in one evening made it impossible to get up and down the stairs, only one
bartender on duty and packed into the performance like sardines - but the
knitting factory's always been like that and probably always will be.
anyway, what everyone's really concerned with - the performance. i felt
that frisell really took a lot away from the vibe the band was trying to
give off. face it, the band practices as a quartet and they've been playing
as a quartet live recently and frisell's electric guitar just didn't fit
in. i used to be a big fan of frisell's but it seems that his style just
refuses to change and it's gotten a bit old to me by now. zorn seemed happy
to let him solo throughout the night but, except for the last song of the
set, his solos really led nowhere. finally during the last song (sorry,
it's too tough to match masada titles to the songs) he let go with a really
funky solo which was great. also, during the same song (and the encore)
anthony coleman played piano and that added a lot to both songs - i'd like
to see a full show with coleman on piano.
i guess frisell just didn't seem to fit in with the accoustic masada
format. eveyone on stage joked around and laughed a lot but some friends i
brought to the show, who are totally unfamiliar with zorn/frisell and their
ongoing musical relationship thought the band was actually making fun of
him during the set. while i'm sure that wasn't what was going on, they were
right when they pointed out that frisell looks a lot like steve forbes.

has zorn ever spoken in public about what his feelings on judaism are? i
know he's the unofficial leader of the radical jewish culture scene, but,
for example, during the september '93 zorn month at the knitting factory i
believe he played on both of the high holy days. also, he seem to alway be
wearing tsetsin (sp?), the fringe orthodox jews wear around their waist,
but he doesn't wear a yarmulke, which is supposed to be worn with tsitsin.
i'm not trying to set him up or anything. as an atheist who was raised
jewish i certainly consider myself to belong to a jewish culture and don't
reject the religion, but was wondering if zorn has spoken on this topic.

I caught the Frisell set and the Masada set on Wednesday.
I was a great evening. For anyone who is a Frisell fan,
trust me--it was incredible! He fit in and really added to the sound of the
band.
I've seen Masada 8 or 9 times and they always sound great, that night they
sounded like Masada, but with an amazing guitarist who can sit
in with anybody. This wasnt the first time Frisell has played with
them.
Zorn was definitely psyched to have Bill there (as was everyone
else in the band). He also let out some great comments throughout the
night. "Come on Bill give it to me! Play that motherfucker!!" After the
first tune someone told Bill to turn up, then someone said to Bill,
"show us your nasty side" then Zorn says "You can suck his nasty side!"
They did some tunes that arent usually played by Masada, I've got
a setlist, I'm not sure if all the spellings are right, but here it is:
1) Midbar
2) Halom
3) Miktav
4) Baciarach (sp?)
5) Idalah - abal
6) Hafla'ah
7) Kilayum

8) Vehuel
9) Gewrah (encore)

Frisell is always great, but Anthony Coleman I had never checked out. He

inspiring, and has definitely made me consider buying more Masada CDs.

No the Knitting Factory only has 1,2,3,5,6. They do not have 4 (Dalet).
I did not see the Frisell show, but I did catch 6 Masada shows last
week. They have plenty of material, plus I heard a few tunes that are "new".
Zorn mentioned one being a "world premiere", plus last monday's show featured
new tunes that they seemed to be working out as they went along. I would
assume there will be a Masada 7 in the future..
Also worthy of mention, Zorn will be performing at the Knitting Factory
Wednesday of this week with Mike Patton at Midnight. In a few weeks he will
also be there performing with his collection of duck calls.

Hi Y'all,
I just got a DAT machine (well, two to be able to trade) and am eager to
begin trading soon. Unfortunately, I've only seen people lurking around the
net groveling for and trading Dead, Phish, God St. Wine, and all that stuff,
or Medeski, Martin & Wood at best. My interest in this (other than MMW) is
zero.
I'm wondering if anyone out there is taping Knit shows and such "downtown"
type music. I'm far more interested in creative improvised music such as
will be featured in the Knit's "What is Jazz?" festival (see the schedule at
the Knit's web site -- unbelievable!) than the rock-based aesthetic.
I'll have some choice DATs (masters) to trade soon. However, I could accept
HQ analogs, too.
Post to list or email me with any responses.
Thanks,
David in Taipei

Why don't you buy some CD's instead? You'll get better quality audio and
you'll be supporting the artists instead of ripping them off.

I know the owner of Take Notes here in Dallas, and I'll give him a call this

often times he puts things on his catalog that he may not keep in stock, and
I think he just overlooked Dalet (IV) assuming he could get all Masada CD's.

Why do you assume that he doesnt own all of Zorn's cd's? For all you know
this guy has 2000 cd's in his collection. How do you know that he is not
friends with Zorn? How do you know if he tapes shows with artists permission
or not?

Maybe we might inform the kids on the list that many grown up musicians
frequent it and that words such as bootleg and taping mean more to
them than just fucking up the system and showing their rebelious side to
the face of society.
I have personally nothing against taping shows. But let's try to avoid

What I find interesting about this discussion is that during the recent one
on Naked City video tapes, someone suggested finding out what the musicians
themselves thought. Now, when the topic of trading tapes of downtown
musicians comes up, and one of them (Denman Maroney) speaks out against it
he is accused of being puritanical for defending his right to have controp

This is a good topic. Knit. Taping. Here's the argument:
1)The Knit is the coolest place to hear music in NYC. It's smoke free, almost
every "seat" is good. the alcohol is affordable. The employees are friendly.
The shows are inexpensive(if you don't think so, go to the Blue Note
sometime). There is ample parking usually, not to mention a six dollar
parking garage nearby. They sell reasonably priced CD's. They take credit
cards. The give out free post cards. But most of all, they present the most
unique music available in today's market.
They also announce before the shows that there is to be no taping.
2)Since they are so cool, as stated in #1, why not honor their request??
Now that's a good argument against taping at the Knitting Factory. With
regards to taping say, Judas Priest at the Madison Square Garden. Who cares,
right?
3)Now here's the contradiction to really complicate #2.
There is a guy I see at EVERY (that's every, really) Zorn show in the
front row with a microphone and a microphone stand taping the show with what
appears to be a cheap beat up tape deck. He hides this from no one, and it is
clearly visible to the KNit staff, as well as Zorn.
SO WHAT'S THE DEAL????????????????????
I say, if you cannot live without some primitive, non-professional, noisey,
unmixed, audience recording(you know, the one's with the guy you can hear in
the next seat going "wow" look at that!!" "that was Awesome" "I'm out of
beer") Then go ahead and tape the show. Until I see the Knit. stop the above
mentioned guy in #3 from blatantly taping, go ahead. Smuggle your DAT
recorders in to record Zorn. But really, you should only be taping Zorn
illegally if you've aquired every entry from PAtrice's complete discography.

playing it. In fact, "Wherein Lies the Good" is making me itch to get my

quite a bit of work.)
I know acquiring scores to new pieces takes quite a sum of money, but I
think I'm willing and/or crazy enough to make the investment. How can I
get in touch with Holcomb's publishers about getting a score to some of
these pieces? Fave tracks include both vocal pieces -- "The Graveyard

Any other opinions?

*NOBODY* has every entry from Patrice's discography! Not one person on this
planet.
There are to many obscure things out there.
Lets say somebody has every Masada cd, would it be ok for that person to tape
a Masada show? Or, take for example the Zorn/ Patton duo gig. There is no
cd
of these two musicians playing in a duo format. So then would anybody have
the right to
tape that show? Or lets say the Masada show which had Frisell sitting in,
and Anthony Coleman
on two tunes. I guess one would have to have all the Masada cd's and every
Frisell recording
to be able to tape that one. And since Anthony Coleman was only guesting on
two tunes, you would
only need to own a couple of his recordings...
The only reason we are having this discussion is because nobody knows exactly
how
Zorn feels about people taping his shows from the audience. (With some other
artists it is
clearly known, but we are talking about Zorn.) I think it is cool that people
out
there are so into his music that they would love to have an audience
recording of him.
And its harmless. I would guess that Zorn feels the same way.

I believe this thread should die a horrible death but I cannot
leave it alone. With this said explain the following privatly to me off list
so we do not bore the others.
From a strictly historical perspective these "Bootlegs" tapes meet
a rather large requirment. I would like to know every song that was played
every day for any concert. I would also like know about every note
practiced along w/ transcriptions.
If I may make an analogy , think of rembrandt making paintings and
he dies just before releasing his final works. Do we not release these to the
public or do we release them. The same would be true of John Coltrane , Miles
Davis or any artist. We learn and are inwardly pushed to learn more and more
about these masters.
Selling a Bootleg is wrong , immoral and illegal but the discographic
purist is forced to acquire any sound he or she can from a Master in any way.

I think bootlegs can serve history and still meet my requirements. If the
artist does not want to be taped, he does not wish to serve history in that
way. Brahms burned a lot of his scores. (Incidentally the person whose
post prompted my remark, which started this thread, wrote back to me,
privately, it seems, and said he did meet all the requirements.)

i have no desire whatsoever to discuss bootlegging as a general
practice. in fact, i've already discussed it too much in the past.
but denman said that there were a lot of tapes of charlie parker
which we could do without, which is a hefty and unqualified statement.
parker is a figure unique in jazz: virtually every time he played,
he played something worth hearing. even the lowest quality tapes
of parker are of historical significance to parker scholars because
he was such a rare musical talent. the most colossal bootlegging
ever undertaken, and subsequently released for mass consumption, is
the dean benedetti series (available on Mosaic). these are not
unvaluable in any way: they catch parker in the studio, at gigs,
and just playing for no reason, and they illuminate what his life
was really like, and how he played solo after solo with such high
invention. i suspect that many bird disciples would be highly
dissatisfied with only the "official" master takes of his studio
tunes, plus a handful of club dates.... there was so much more to
him than that.

I asked him the question last September (having followed Zorn for a while, it
was a surprise to discover his fairly late interest about the jewish culture).
"It started in 1990. Many of my friend musicians (Jewish) were coming back
from touring in Germany with sad stories about a regain of antisemistism.
At that time I (Zorn) realized that I was not a *white* person."
As you can see, it did not start with a mystical experience or a deep
curiosity about his roots, but more as a political/social reaction (which
seems more in line with Zorn's character). He was definitely talking about
the early '90s. I didn't ask him about his religious beliefs. Could what
started on the political/social level became more on the religious one?
I don't know.
Patrice.

Sure. Zorn does not profit from this venture. He may not want you to
own this music. However, I understand the need and desire for these
shows. I'd love to have some Naked City live stuff, or Material live
from the Memory Serves era (hint hint).
So the answer (from me, at least) is: Yes it's unethical, but sometimes
ethics must be ignored!)

Ironic, isn't it? The guitar riff that they've used for years when you see
their logo is by the Butthole Surfers, a group that has probably never been
played on MTV. Has Naked City ever appeared on MTV?

For Zorn to wear tzit tzit, the garment with a strand of fringe at each of
its four corners, while not wearing a yarmulke, the small circular head
covering, actually makes perfect sense. The act of wearing tzit tzit is an
actual commandment from G-d to the Jewish people, whereas wearing a yarmulke
has no basis in any divine commandments, and exists only as a man made
tradition carried through the generations.
Has anybody picked up the colored vinyl ep "Live at the Pecci Museum?" I
could have the exact title mistaken, but it is something to that effect, and
it is a live recording from 1995, and is issued as a limited edition. I'm
wondering if it is a recording of him performing solo, with a band (which
band?), or what not. It is quite affordable ($9 or so), but I would like to
know what it contains before ordering one.
When is the new batch of Tzadik releases scheduled to arrive? I am anxious
to hear the vocal trio with Tatsuya Yoshida, the solo voice recording by Mike
Patton, and whatever Zorn resissues are on the way. Isn't there an Eyvind
Kang CD on the horizon as well? I just heard his work on the new Bill
Frisell Quartet CD on Nonesuch, and enjoyed it immensely. Kang played as
part of the Cobra performance that came through Chicago a couple of years
ago, and I have been waiting for some recordings of his work ever since.

These are:
1. Zorn: Classic Guide to Strategy (excellent)
2. Zorn: Filmworks II (ditto)
3. Elliott Sharp: Xenocodex (noisy!)
4. Eyvind Kang: 7 NADEs (absolutely AMAZING)
5. Li Chin Sung: Past (also noisy, need more time to
evaluate)
6. Wadada Leo Smith: Tao-Nija (beautiful, chamber music)
7. Zubi Zuva: Jehovah (haven't heard)
8. Mike Patton: Adult Themes for Voice (haven't heard)
Filmworks II, curiously enough, says "Released by
Special Permission from MCA." Could this have been
meant for Trespass originally? Patrice? You mention
that Zorn played on the (quite excellent) Trespass
soundtrack, yet I only remember Ry Cooder, Mark
Isham and Jim Keltner (making some very atypical
improv racket that The Wire even likened to AMM!).
Likely for July release:
TZ 7307 The Parachute Years (3 CDs)
Finally, I'm a newcomer to the list, so forgive me if
this one's already been played out: I heard a rumor
last year about a 100(!) CD set by Zorn and Eye, to
be issued to Sound Factory. The discs were to be
packaged on a spool, the way they come from the factory,
and were to be anywhere from a few seconds to 70 minutes
in duration. Sold by pre-payment only, the story
went. Anyone know anything about this?

That's my guess as well... Bruce and some of his friends have been taping
Knitting Factory shows for as long as I've known them, and they have a long
standing order that tape *trading* is alright as long as no one is selling
any of the tapes. Of course there's no way to enforce this once a tape has
traded, but I've never heard of anyone interested in this music actually
selling taped material. Really we're talking about an ethic based on the
love of this amazing music, and the sharing of that love.
In fact I had a long discussion one night with Bruce's friend Len, another
Knit taper, who was very worried about trading with someone he didn't know
because he was afraid that this guy would sell the tapes after trading with
him. In the end he didn't trade with him, even though he had some music
that Len wanted to hear, because of that concern.

Yes, it was Batman, and yes it was way back when that album was NEW. They
played it late night on their "alternative" show 120 Minutes. The video was
compromised almost solely of black and white film of gangster scenes,
including footage of the dead man on the cover of the Naked City album from

it's safe to say they only played it once. Music history, as the world

godhead. it apparently was recorded in different hotel rooms around the

lot of fun, if that's ok to say on this list--you might need to already
have an affinity for patton- if you're not already into him, you may hate
it. for instance, i mentioned the album to my roommate, who thinks "faith

There is not too much by them. One CD on a US label (Touch and Go?). They
play on CHIPFARM, a Hoppy Kamiyama project. They are (like any Japanese
band) on numerious compilations. Their US CD is fairly faithful to their
live performance.
> ruins- their new one, i can't spell the title from memory!
Get SAISORO, their "duo" with Derek Bailey (on Tzadik). It is not rock, it
is not improv, it is something between. One of my favorite records of last
year (one from which I did not expect anything). This collaboration is
just incredible. Who could have imagine that Ruins and Bailey could have
anything to say to each others? Zorn thought so; he was right beyond our
wildest expections.

A must! The equivalent of KIND OF BLUE for the modern jazz adventurer :-).
An incredible record!!! One of my all time favorites. I used to play it a lot;
I still do. And the CD reissue has alternate takes! You imagine that, alternate
takes of Machine Gun!!! Could you belive the producer saying: "Hum... I think it
was a little bit wimpy; could you play it again with more energy?".

Hello,
Is somebody intrested in getting Wayne Horvitz&pigpen 'Live in Poland' cd? I wo
uld volountery trade it for some masada (except the second) or Dr.Nerve, or bar
rondown (I've seen a GREAT show by them in Bydgoszcz, Poland), or something equ
ally interesting. It's an semi - official release - it was sold with a jazz mag
azine from here. It's long- about 70 minutes. Personnaly, i prefer the studio
versions the tunes (not all of them- 'miss ann' is much better live). There' s
also a number of good polish bands- if anybody is interested, i could tape a co
mpilation( for exaple a great live cd of a band called 'Milosc' with Lester Bow
ie)
As the list in a kind of 'morals-ethics' discussion, i'd like to mention that m
y offer is not ethicaly correct. I pay only few $ for the cd. But i think that
compared to the sums of money we earn, it's Ok- remeber that we use to get
300$ a month here and a Zorn CD costs nearly 20$ here(if you can find it).
And please, remember that not everybody on the list is from New York. You know,
when i read stuff like 'masada with frisell was nothing special', when i can
see each of these guys every two years, it's not a good joke. ;-)

I just got a copy of the magazine CARBON 14 (issue #7, with an
interview of Elliott Sharp and a 7" with Wayne Horvitz, Zeena Parkins,
William Hooker, etc). Two questions:
1/ when was this issue released?
2/ who else has appeared in the previous issues/7" (I also
have the issue #4)?
Thanks,

Hello,
There is one thing i cannot understand. Why is there no connection (at least,
i don't know of any) between Robert Fripp and Zorn, Frisell etc.? what is more
strange (for me)is that there is practically no talk about RF&kc here, and not
a single word on Zorn etc. on Elephant talk, the crimso list.
Don't you find it strange? Does everybody here leaves a party when he hears, fo
r example , 'discipline'(which is, btw my favourite record)? I can't beleive it
!
Imagine a Fripp-Frisell Band!!!

The Pigpen "Live In Poland" CD has been reissued here in the States... before
its reissue, I had been searching quite extensively for it, so it is too bad
that we did not cross paths earlier. I actually prefer the live versions
over the studio versions of their compositions...
Brotzmann's "Machine Gun" is absolutely essential, as it documents possibly
the finest hour in the birth of the current European avant garde jazz mind
set (which has since made its presence felt in any quality avant garde
music)... likening it to "Kind Of Blue" makes sense, as would likening it to
"Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," or something else to that effect.
One of the finest recordings of all time, in terms of its every aspect...
the compositions, the musicians, the emotion, the artistry... don't pass on
"Machine Gun" the next time that you have the chance to pick it up.
Ruins, to my ears at least, have shown themselves capable of sheer brilliance
as well... I regard their "Burning Stone" Shimmy Disc recording to be
essential listening as well. Their Tzadik sessions with Bailey on "Saisoro"
are amazing, as were the sessions with a Ruins side project (Yoshida and
Masuda plus keys, guitar, and female vocals) called Hundred Sights Of Koenji
(which were released last year on God Mountain). I pick up anything that
Yoshida is involved with (a steadily growing and already expansive
collection), and can honestly say that all of his discs are of high quality,
and can only be judged in reference to one another. The one caveat would be
for the recently released Tzadik CD "Jehova" by a Yoshida vocal trio called
Zubi Zuva, which is truthfuly the first project of his that is less than
sterling, and is something that I will probably not be spinning in the CD
player again anytime soon. It doesn't matter though, as I'm still not
through ingesting the other most recent additions to the Yoshida collection,
which come in the form of his recorded output (three CD's worth) with the
band YBO2.
Painkiller are a pretty amazing bunch, in all of their various guises. Their
first three, "Guts Of A Virgin," "Buried Secrets," and "Rituals" are all
hefty doses of extreme terror jazz, with pounding bass, super heavy drums,
and shrieking sax. Their most recent triple disc endeavor "Burial Ground"
reveals a different side in that they employ many aspects of ambient and dub
into their style, tone down on the harshness, and really just jam. The third
disc of the set, a live recording, takes the new turn one step further by
adding some rumble and nastiness to the ambient realms. Excellent stuff, all
of it. Start with the live "Rituals" or the triplr disc "Burial Ground" (and
be sure not to cheat yourself out of disc three by purchasing the American
version).

i'll second this recommendation, this combo works extremely well, and i was (like

i'll second this sentiment, brotzmann's "machine gun" is certainly one of the all
time classics. go get it, and turn the stereo up very loud. (if your neighbors
are at all sane they'll probably call the police).

I'm looking for an Ikue Mori discography (with DNA stuff too, if
possible). At the very least could someone mail me the title of her
Tzadik release from last year?
Thanks.

This is the first version of the discography of Ikue Mori.
Again, I would really appreciate any comments, corrections and extra infor-
mation which could improve the quality of this discography. Specifically, if
people could send me information and/or corrections on:
* missing records and tapes,
* incorrect references (on dates, musicians, etc),
* additional references (for vinyl, CD, or different pressings);
for example, I am still looking for information on the following records:
* I GUESS I JUST WASN'T MADE FOR THESE TIMES: David Garland (1993 - Music-
Scene (Japon), ??? (CD)
* LES FLEURS DE LEO: M.F. Cote/Bruire (???? - Ambiances Magnetiques, ???)

Has anybody heard "Film Works III" (yes, 3)? It's out on Toy's Factory
Records. It features the "Thieves Quartet" stuff, some music for japanese
cartoons (any info greatly appreciated!) and some stuff from commercials.
Maybe Patrice could post the info?
Jonas
BTW Is the liner notes on the Toy's Factory releases in japanese?

does anyone know anything about a japanese label called (i think) PSF?
all i know is that their records are in the same rack as the "nani nani"
cd, and have quite strange covers. they are prohibitively expensive as
are all japanese cds here, so i thought i'd ask before i buy.
thanks,
alan

TZ 7207 Death Ambient
Ikue Mori, Kato Hideki, Fred Frith

I picked up "Filmworks II" on Toys Factory quite some time ago, and am hoping
that the same store will carry the "Filmworks III" that was mentioned. I
will of course let you know if I find it...
PSF records is a pretty cool japanese label, the music presented by it runs
the gamut from stoned out hippy psych rock to free jazz and all points in
between. I wouldn't recommend just grabbing whatever PSF title is within
reach and buying it, as I doubt that many of us here have tastes as broad as
the types of music that they present. Tatsuya Yoshida's Musica Transonic
trio (which falls into the stoned out hippy psych rock category) has a CD on
PSF, and High Rise (one member of which is also in Musica Transonic) have a
few. Other notable PSF releases are those by Mikami Kan and Toho Sara...
other than that, I have little exposure to the label's other works.

I have found some groups of improvisors who don't do it the way we're used to
seeing it done. Most of the free improvisors I've heard, seen and played
with are descended from the Baily/Parker and then Frith/Zorn school. I've
also been exposed to improvisors who have no idea what has come before them.
Somehow they figured it was o.k. to bang on pots and pans, play a guitar
with a tape measure, play sax mouthpieces, etc. There is a group here in
Colorado called The Miracle who are a bunch of hippies and jazz musicians who
are very theatrical and very noisy. A complete lack of sophistication and
"savoir faire". And yet, they're a gas! I've seen other people, too, from
different parts of the US who are just wailing and fun.
Now, these people are very un-pretentious and I get the impression that you
feel Jon Rose is pretentious. No arguement from me, as I've never seen him
perform. Just my two cents worth. :-)

"Burning Stone" is the ultimate Ruins recording... nothing else that they
have attempted before or since has captured the spark which existed through
out the "Burning Stone" sessions. Keep in mind, though, that every Ruins
recording is worth three times its weight in gold (and then some)... "Burning
Stone" just happens to be their finest hour (as of yet).

Since i have not seen any reference to any of his works(although he has
worked with Zorn and has a Tzadik release) i thought i'd give my opinion
on I, his solo sampler work.
For one thing, it is difficult to believe that everything on the CD comes
from his sampler, in real time as he states in the notes. Although
musically it does not sound at all like Zorn, the themes of the tracks are
quite similar:Screwy Squirrel and Tex(Avery) with their Warner Bros
samplesand Alpha(probably the best track), inspired from Godaurd's
Alphaville. Inspired is the key word here, since Shea does not rework
the soundtrack of the film or make an alternative soundtrack(as in Bill
Frisell's Buster Keaton works), but creates music inspired from it, that
can stand alone by itself, as Shea himself states on almost all of his
works. Altogether an excellent release.
On different note, has anyone listened to volume 1 in the Sub
Rosa/Subsonic series(Fred Frith/Marc Ribot)?I am really interested to know
if it is any good.
